There are special hybrid varieties that grow and bear fruit perfectly even on a windowsill without planting in open ground. But at home you cannot get a rich harvest.
Red pepper has many varieties. Pure varieties can be propagated independently by seeds, and hybrid varieties are famous for their resistance to adverse environmental conditions and the best taste. Red sweet pepper varieties can differ in shade, shape, sweetness:
- Agapovsky. It is a red pepper variety that ripens approximately 3 months after planting. The bushes are low, the fruits are red, angular, square, sweet, with rather thick walls. The variety is very resistant to various diseasesbut grows better in greenhouses than outdoors.
- Atlant. This variety matures within 70 days of planting. Its name indicates large, fleshy fruits. Peppers can reach a diameter of 14 cm. The fruits are very tasty, sweet, juicy. The variety grows well both in the greenhouse and in the open field.
- Bogatyr. This variety of red sweet pepper is renowned for its high yields. The fruits are rather large, elongated, tapering downwards. Fruits weighing up to 180 g, have a pleasant aroma, sweet taste and juicy pulp.
- California miracle. Very nice sweet fruits. The peppers have a flattened square shape, not elongated downward. Ripen within about 2-2.5 months from the moment of planting seedlings... Fruits can be very large, weighing up to 250 g.
- Fat Baron. It is an early variety that ripens quickly. The fruits resemble a cube, bright red, smooth, shiny, can weigh up to 300 g. The taste is very sweet, the walls are thick.
Benefits of Red Sweet Pepper
Red bell peppers are undoubtedly a healthy vegetable. Its most widespread use is in the culinary field. Sweet peppers are eaten fresh, stewed, salted and pickled, sauces are made from it.
The composition of red peppers makes them incredibly healthy. For this reason, red bell peppers are an essential part of a healthy diet:
- Vitamin C. Red bell peppers are very rich in ascorbic acid. More than pepper, vitamin C only in rose hips... You cannot find a more useful vegetable in this regard.For an adult, in order to provide his body with the necessary daily dose of ascorbic acid, it is enough to eat only 1 large sweet pepper. The most rich in vitamin C is the part of the pepper that is located near the stalk, so it must be removed carefully so as not to cut off all the most useful.
- Capsaicin. This substance is found in all peppers, even hot ones. It gives this vegetable a slight characteristic bitterness. There is little of it in sweet pepper, but it is present. This substance improves the functioning of the digestive system, improves appetite, and promotes the production of gastric juice.
- B vitamins. These are vitamins important for the body. They improve the conduction of nerve impulses, strengthen blood vessels, improve the condition of the skin, hair and nails, normalize sleep, improve mood and strengthen the nervous system, and increase stress resistance.
- Vitamin R. This is a rather rare vitamin that is not found in all vegetables. It helps ascorbic acid to be better absorbed in the body, and also strengthens the walls of blood vessels, improves the work of the cardiovascular system.
- Antioxidants Red pepper contains substances that can prevent the growth of malignant tumors, so it is advisable to eat at least 1 bell pepper daily.
- Vitamin A. This vitamin helps to maintain visual acuity, strengthen hair and skin. One pepper contains the daily dose of vitamin A. Red pepper also contains zinc, which helps the absorption of vitamin A.
Harm and contraindications
Red bell peppers are very popular in Russia. It is deservedly considered useful and has few contraindications. Of course, it is not poisonous, but it is advisable for some categories of people to be wary of using this vegetable:
- Gastritis. Gastritis with high acidity of gastric juice excludes the use of sweet red pepper. With inflammation of the gastric mucosa, not only hot peppers are harmful because of their irritating properties, but sweet peppers too. Its juice also contains irritants, albeit in small quantities. They increase the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, so people with high acidity of gastric juice will have to refuse to consume fresh sweet pepper.
- Coronary artery disease. In severe coronary artery disease, red bell peppers will also have to be excluded.
- Kidney disease. With kidney disease, the elimination of toxins from the body is impaired. In this case, the food is especially gentle, and red bell peppers should be excluded from the diet.
- Hemorrhoids, colitis. For internal hemorrhoids and worsening colitis, red bell peppers can be harmful due to the large amount of coarse fiber, which is good for a healthy intestine but can harm irritated intestinal mucosa.
- With the pathology of pregnancy. During pregnancy, fresh bell peppers are very useful, except in cases where there are complications in the kidneys or liver, as well as with high blood pressure. Red bell peppers are rich in essential oils that can provoke an allergic reaction in a child.
You should be careful when purchasing red bell peppers. This vegetable is on the list of foods containing pesticides. If the pepper is not grown on your site, you need to consider this possibility. This pepper does more harm to the body than good.
The maximum amount of vitamins is found in summer peppers. In winter, it can also be grown and bought, but its beneficial properties will be much lower.
How to properly grow red bell peppers
There is nothing difficult in growing red bell peppers. Hybrid varieties are well adapted for growing in the middle lane and are resistant to pests.
If you follow the basic rules of planting and care, you can get a rich harvest of tasty and ripe fruits.
Tips for growing peppers:
- Peppers are grown only in seedlings.This thermophilic plant will not grow outdoors. In addition, from the moment of planting to obtaining fruits, at least 3 months are necessary.
- Pepper has a long growing season. A lot of time will pass from planting to fruiting. You need to start preparing seeds already in February, and plant them in March-April.
- In order for the pepper to sprout well, it is better to buy a special soil in a specialized store. In soil intended for peppers, seeds germinate within 2 weeks.
- The soil can be watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate to avoid infection and destroy spores of fungi and larvae of parasites, but this is rare for store-bought soil.
- Seedlings need to be provided with plenty of light and heat. Pepper loves light and temperatures up to 28 degrees. Best to grow seedlings on the windowsills... If there is not enough light or the weather is cloudy, additional lighting... For these purposes, not ordinary, but LED or fluorescent lamps are used, as well as special phytolamps.
- As soon as 2-3 leaves appear at the seedlings, it is time to plant the seedlings in separate pots. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the delicate roots.
- It is possible to plant seedlings in open ground only after the onset of heat, when frosts no longer appear. If you are planting peppers in a greenhouse, then you can do it in early May, outdoors - in late May or early June.
Pepper needs standard care: feeding, regular watering, weeding. Pepper bushes need to be tied up so that they do not bend to the ground under the weight of the fruit.
