How to sow onions
Onions are usually grown in two stages. The first year you sow seeds and get planting material - sets, small onions, which will need to be harvested in the fall and, after drying, stored until next year. From the seed, you are already growing full-fledged large bulbs. There are, however, varieties that are grown immediately, without an intermediate "sevkovy" stage.
If you don't know how to sow onions yet, let's try to figure it out. Let's start with the basics, which are far from always known to beginners of the onion business.
Sowing times can vary depending on climatic conditions. The main thing is that the night frosts have already finally passed. If sowing under a film, then it is possible even a little earlier, when the top layer of the soil warms up. Can also be pre-seeded in a box. Cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, peas are the best precursors for onions. If you are afraid of fungal diseases, treat the soil with copper sulfate two days before planting. Lime acidic soil.
Before sowing, we make rows at a distance of about 30 cm from each other and about 2 cm deep. You can sow in two ways: with a solid ribbon or three to four seeds every 15 cm.In the first case, you will have to thin out more often, but you will have more and a bow on a feather. This crop needs sufficient lighting, and only the first months of watering. When the bulb is already ripe, moist soil can only do harm.
For onions to grow better, they need not only space, but also top dressing. It's a good idea to use bird droppings or diluted mullein for this.
We never grow sevok, but always buy it in the spring at the bazaar. We try to take not small, but also not very large, otherwise it will definitely go to the arrow and such a bulb will already be of poor quality.
