Garden sculptures: rules for a beautiful garden design
If the site owner wants to turn his garden into a real work of art, he can seek help from a landscape designer. This will require a lot of money, but it guarantees an excellent result. However, you can try to realize your creative potential with the help of various garden sculptures. It is inexpensive and, with some effort, is no less beautiful than the purchased figurines.
For the manufacture of garden sculpture, you can use any available means: cardboard, old dishes and furniture, tires, plastic and glass bottles, foam, paint residues, ribbons, corks, pieces of wood, stones, etc.
DIY garden sculptures will be a great decoration for your site.
However, in order for the result to please, you need to adhere to several rules for decorating a garden plot:
- Even very cute shapes can ruin the look of a garden if they don't fit in there. It is desirable that they be combined with the house, and with the plants in the garden, and with each other.
- The choice of location must be thought out in advance. If in doubt, it is better to use the model of the sculpture to find a new place. If you rearrange the sculpture itself, you can damage flower beds or lawn.
- Sculptures are a complement to a garden, not a foundation. Therefore, you do not need to put many figures, filling every free space of the garden plot. In this case, the garden will look overwhelmed, and the abundance of sculptures will distract attention from the plants that were grown with difficulty and care.
- Sculptures do not have to be large and bright. There is nothing wrong with the fact that first the eye falls on the flower bed itself, and only then on the figures.
- The background is important for the sculpture. Just a stand-alone figure will look catchy, but will not fit into the overall picture. For this purpose, the sculptures are placed against the background of arches, gazebos, in the center of the flower bed.
- If you are planning a global garden improvement, you need to draw up a detailed plan on which you indicate where and what will be located. You cannot arrange the sculptures randomly, you need to adhere to the given style.
- When choosing a garden style for yourself, try to take into account its size, position and your capabilities. You won't be able to make Japanese gardens out of a small plot, but you can always decorate it in such a way as to arouse the admiration of your neighbors.
Wood sculpture
Wood is a favorite material for gardeners. It is affordable, environmentally friendly and easy to use.It may seem that only craftsmen can sculpt from wood, but there are also fairly simple sculptures that can decorate any area.
What can be done with the material:
- If it is difficult to cut and do something global, you can create beautiful figures from ordinary birch twigs and wire. Fresh rods bend easily. They can be shaped like any animal and placed next to a flower bed or bushes.
- You can try wood carving. This requires a fairly large piece of wood. Choose soft woods for easier handling. Of course, you will need a special set of tools for woodworking, as well as a lot of time and patience. For wood carving, you need a sketch. You don't have to be an artist to draw a fairly simple shape. Already according to the finished drawing, you need to repeat the contours on a piece of wood. To make it easier, you can sculpt a model from plasticine. So it will become voluminous, it will be easier to cut from it.
- If you find it difficult to carve figuratively on wood, you can come up with a simpler option. For example, find or cut out 2 flat planks from a tree. At the bottom, make two holes and tie shoes to them or cut out the feet as well. The same should be done for the hands. Eyes and noses can be drawn or made from anything, and you can wear a hat on top or come up with a hairstyle from fabric and thread. Such cute figurines will be an excellent flower bed decoration. By the way, hair can be replaced with flowers or shrubs.
- The easiest option is to paint on ordinary stumps. Old hemp will become much more attractive if you just paint them or put on small colored basins on top to make mushrooms.
- You can make an excellent brownie from ordinary hemp. To do this, you need to find a dense fabric and cut it in such a way that you get a beard and hair. All this is attached to the stump. You can draw eyes, you can glue cardboard blanks. We put on a hat on top, and instead of legs, you can use any old shoes. In the rain, such decorations will have to be brought into the house.
Of course, if you have the ability and certain experience, you can make real masterpieces from wood. For example, a carved bench, a sculpture in the shape of an owl or a bear, carved from a stump of a real goblin.
Decorating the garden with stones
Stones, like wood, are natural materials. They can also be used in their raw form. From stones he can make ponds, sculptures, lay out paths.
You can just paint whatever you want on large stones and it will be beautiful.
The Japanese are especially fond of decorating their gardens with stones. If you are planning a Japanese-style garden, these sculptures will be just right. Possible options for do-it-yourself stone sculptures:
- It is easy to work with a stone, you just need to find the most aesthetic material. Even just a small stone slide next to a blooming flower bed, pond or waterfall will look beautiful.
- Large and smooth stones can be painted to resemble animals or birds. If you have the talent of an artist, in any case, you will get a bright and beautiful decoration for the garden. Beginners can buy special stencils to make drawing easier.
- Small pebbles can be painted with berries and pots with these bright stones can be placed around the perimeter of the garden.
- You can make sculptures out of stones, but you need good glue and an artist's eye. The easiest way is to make a large basket of small stones in which you can place flower pots. If the stones are multi-colored, it will turn out very beautifully.
- Unusual stones can be simply laid out in groups in the garden, or you can make compositions out of them, for example, iron them in the form of a flower.
- If there are 4 oval stones of different sizes, you can make a cat. The largest stone will be the body, the smaller one will be the head, and next to it, put 2 smaller stones - these are the paws of a lying cat. Ears and tail can be made from wire. The nose will be the smallest stones that can be found anywhere, and paint the eyes and mouth with paints.
- A family of ladybugs in the garden will look very nice. This requires large stones of different sizes, red, black and white paints. It is very simple to paint stones for ladybirds, and the result will invariably please.
- You can make a small castle out of stones and place it next to a waterfall or flower bed... This will require a large number of medium-sized stones, glue and patience. It is advisable to make a layout in advance and think over the size of the castle. Instead of tower roofs, you can use tin caps or simply make them from the same stones and then paint them red. The complexity of the construction will depend on the amount of material and time. You cannot take such a decoration into the house, so do not use paper and woven parts.
Sculptures from bottles and plaster
Sculptures made from plastic bottles are perhaps the most popular. This is the cheapest and most accessible material, and everyone can learn how to make such sculptures. For any craft, you only need bottles, scissors, glue, wire and paints.
Ideas for plastic bottles:
- It is very easy to make a palm tree from plastic bottles. To do this, you just need to thread the wire through the brown bottles and secure them in this form. The green part of the palm is cut from bottles of the corresponding color. They are cut in strips and attached to the "trunk" in such a way that as they accumulate, they tilt downward.
- Any shape can be folded from bottles if there is a sufficient amount of material of different diameters. For example, from 4 small bottles, 2 large and one 5-liter bottle, you can make a donkey, paint it and draw eyes.
- To make a swan out of plastic bottles, you will need wire, the bottles themselves, scissors, a stationery knife and pliers, as well as an awl and paints. The long neck of the swan is made from the bottoms of the bottles, there should be about 18. They are attached with wire, and the front of the bottle will be the muzzle. The body is made of whole bottles, which are attached in three rows to each other. The wings are also a series of bottles held in an arc. The finished structure is painted with spray paint; a flower pot can be placed between the wings.
Working with plaster requires certain skills, but after training, beautiful sculptures will be obtained. The easiest way is to make a fungus. This requires sculptural plaster, paints, glue, varnish, wood cutters, cling film, a plastic bottle. From the bottle you need to cut off the part that will serve as a leg.
So that the gypsum does not dry out to the bottle, its walls are lubricated with soapy water, and then diluted gypsum is poured.
A bottle of a smaller diameter must be inserted into the still uncured gypsum. You need to cut off the bottle from the frozen form. The hat is made in the same way, from plaster, which is poured into a cup of a suitable diameter, lined with cling film. In the still not dried solution, you need to insert the finished mushroom leg. The mushroom can be left and simply painted, or you can make another stand for it, cut patterns on it.
In addition, it is good to make turtles, swans, houses, cups for flowers, hedgehogs and other animals, owls from plaster, and everything that is enough for your imagination.
Tire sculptures
Amazing garden sculptures can be made from old tires. You can cut out of them or paint on top with paints. Usually a man's hand is required for such sculptures, since it is not so easy to cut a thick splint.
Not all gardeners like to decorate their plot with tire sculptures because of their non-ecological compatibility and not the most expensive appearance. However, with the right approach, such a sculpture can decorate even an exquisite garden.
Tire sculptures are not only original, but also practical.
Ideas for tires:
- You can choose a bear from simple crafts. Nice and uncomplicated sculpture. To do this, you need to fasten 2 tires of different sizes. Planks can be used to cover the middle. All this is painted with brown paint in two or three shades. The same tires will serve as legs, and pieces of tires will serve as hands.
- Tire swans are classics of the genre. To make such a swan in a simple version, you need to cut one half of the tire into 3 parts. The two side parts need to be unbent like the wings, and the central part should be cut off from one end and straightened. The tip should be smeared with red paint, and the rest should be painted white. In the middle of such a swan, you can make a small flower bed.
- If desired, you can even make upholstered furniture, a sandbox for children, a pool or pondif the tire diameter allows.
- A tire turtle can serve as a flower bed or just a decoration. The simplest version of such a craft is a regular tire, painted brown or green. The legs are made from pieces of another tire and painted the same color. For the head, you can come up with a blank made of cardboard. You can put a basin of the corresponding diameter on top, it will replace the shell.
Such sculptures can be useful, serve as flower beds, sandboxes and do not lose their appearance for a long time, you just need to renew the paint. Old tires are a versatile material from which you can make anything, with a sufficient level of skill and a lot of free time.

I love DIY garden decorations. We use all sorts of improvised means for this, for example, we made goblin from old buckets, we knocked down a bull from logs, and a ladybug in a basin))
There are a lot of ready-made garden sculptures on sale. But it is much more interesting to do something like this yourself if you have a creative streak and improvised material. I would not heavily litter my site with such decorations, but there are 3 homemade decorations. Placed in the children's area of the site.
It is not uncommon for things that we want to throw away, we can come up with something beautiful, interesting and very original, and everyone can make sculptures from plastic bottles.
Of course, you can do something from plaster, provided that the hands grow from where they are needed, but I do not advise using tires in the country. During their operation, they have absorbed a lot of rubbish into themselves, and even in the heat they somehow smell completely different from the dacha.
