Spitz is a type of white cabbage
Cabbage is a popular vegetable for growing and preparing a variety of dishes. White cabbage has quite a few types, for example, there is Spitz cabbage, which is much looser and softer than plain white cabbage, it is suitable for any dishes, but the main disadvantage of such cabbage is the price, and we grow it very rarely. You should not be led by fashion and the opinion that what is more expensive is better, in fact, Spitz cabbage does not surpass simple white cabbage in useful properties, but the latter is easy to grow in your garden.
In order to grow a good harvest of cabbage, it is better to prepare the soil for it in the fall: dig it up, so that there are many irregularities left, which will help the soil to better absorb melt water in the spring. In the spring, when the soil is not yet completely dry, it must be leveled with a rake and left to warm up, removing germinating weeds. It is better to grow cabbage through seedlings, which must be thrown into prepared holes, which can easily accommodate the roots of the seedlings. In parallel with the spring tillage, fertilizers should be applied, preferably organic ones.
Seeds for seedlings begin to be sown in March, depending on the rate of ripening of the variety, the seeds are placed in moist soil in a cup to a depth of at least one centimeter and covered with a film so that the soil remains moist, after the emergence of seedlings, the film is removed. Plants need to be ventilated, watered and monitored so that they are not limited by the receipt of light, and they do not stretch.
For planting, the seedlings are ready that:
- in early varieties, it has five to seven leaves, 20 cm high;
- in middle and late varieties, it has four to six leaves, about 20 cm high.
It is necessary to plant seedlings in cloudy weather or when the sun loses its power, that is, in the second half of the day, until the first true leaves, but you cannot cover the sprout point of the leaves themselves with earth, water thoroughly.
Cabbage should grow on moist soil, it should not be allowed to dry out, and that too wet soil leads to diseases, feeding is done twice, along with watering.
