Peony features, flower varieties
Pion refers to perennial plants that can grow in one place for ten to twenty years. The underground part of the flower is a root in the form of a thickened, fleshy tuber. From its buds, stems grow, reaching a height of half a meter to a meter. Openwork foliage is abundantly green on them. At the end of the shoots, after forty days of growth, buds appear, which open into luxurious inflorescences. Over the years, the tuber thickens, adventitious rhizomes grow to it.
Ornamental plants are divided into two types: tree peonies and herbaceous peonies.
Chinese flower growers prefer to grow tree varieties of peonies. The peculiarities of the European-Chinese flower group are the large sizes of inflorescences with white, lilac and crimson petals. At the base of the flower there is a bright spot of pink tone. Yellow inflorescences of peonies are hybrids, therefore they are unpretentious, resistant to drought. The side shoots are decorated with the same lush buds as the main ones. The Japanese group of tree peonies, although not happy with large flowers, but semi-double petals are interesting in color. There are dark red, wine shades with purple tips, with a chaotic alternation of white and red. There is a variety with flowers as bright as an orange, even a scent reminiscent of citrus fruits.
Herbaceous varieties of peonies are especially common in our gardens. And this variety has more varieties. New hybrids are obtained by mixing the white-flowered peony with other species. There are plants with double and semi-double flowers: Nance variety, Alexander Dumas, Solange, Cytheria, Miss America. In anemic peonies, the middle is occupied by stamens, and the petals are located around. Peonies differ in addition to the shape of the flower and the timing of flowering. From the variety of varieties and hybrids, they choose those that are suitable for the design of the site, the style of the territory.
When do peonies bloom?
Peonies do not begin to bloom as soon as they were planted. It takes more than one year for a plant to fully develop:
- First, the flower takes root, adapts to the conditions of life. Therefore, in the first year, the buds on the stems will not appear. And there will be two or three shoots that have not yet reached normal growth.
- In the second year of the plant's life, the tuber continues to thicken, and the number of stems doubles. Small buds may appear at the end of the shoots. But it is better to cut them off, otherwise the plant will expend energy on their growth and will be left without nutrients.
- In the third year, the flowering of peonies will be full, although not abundant.
Depending on the variety, the flowering time of the decorative culture will be different. But there is only one month of flowering - June. Early varieties begin to bloom at the end of May and continue to bloom until June 10. With an average flowering period - up to the 20th, late ones - finish in the last days of June.
The flowering period of peonies is ten to fifteen days. It depends on air temperature, humidity. In hot weather, as well as in cold summer, flowers fade faster. Every gardener can prolong the flowering of peonies.
Reasons for the lack of flowering
In the third year of growth, peonies bloom. In rare cases, varieties of red flowers begin to bud in the fourth year of life. If the plants develop correctly, and the buds are not formed on them, then a situation arises due to:
- Improper planting of ornamental culture.
- Soil depletion next to other trees and shrubs.
- Shading the area where the flowers are planted.
- A poorly matched seedling.
Peony planting is carried out in sunny places, away from trees, housing buildings. The flower does not tolerate shading even for two hours a day. The place for peonies is chosen open, with a deep bed of groundwater.
If the plant does not bloom, you can dig up a bush in mid-August and plant it in accordance with the rules of agricultural technology.
The rhizome is located at a distance of 5-7 centimeters from the surface of the earth. Do not add peony tubers deeper and close to the surface. The distance between the bushes of the plant should not be closer than half a meter, because every year the perennial gives new shoots. When purchasing planting material, pay attention to the number of buds and the mass of the rhizome. An adult plant will take root worse and will not allow a young one to develop root system.
Why do peonies bloom poorly?
During the periods of growth of peonies, there come such moments when there are few buds and they are unsightly. Plants bloom poorly due to improper care of them. The soil is depleted over time, which leads to a stop of the peonies in development. You can feed the plantings of flowers with mineral fertilizers. It is advised to make three to four wells around the bushes, stuffing them with branches or inserting pipes there. And through the holes to bring in liquid mineral and organic complexes.
Fungal diseases are characteristic of the plant, and do not allow it to fully develop.
Roots are often exposed on old bushes, which leads to a deterioration in flowering. It is worth covering the plants with earth, as the buds will begin to appear abundantly. A lot of inflorescences on a plant will not allow the peony to be decorative. Twenty flowers are enough for one bush. It is better to cut the rest.
Peonies do not bloom well when summers are dry or rainy with low temperatures. In such cases, it is difficult to correct the poor flowering of the plant. It remains to wait for a favorable period. Adult plants up to ten years old can stay in one place and bloom luxuriantly with proper care.
Garden plant care for good flowering
The peony will bloom every year if you take care of it correctly:
- For ornamental shrubs, soil moisture is important throughout the summer. Water two to three buckets per plant every two weeks during drought, monthly during wet season.
- Peonies need intensive nutrition with nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. The plants are fed along with watering and loosening. Fertilizers are applied in autumn and early spring. From organic fertilizers, suitable for peonies wood ash, mullein, diluted in a ratio of 1: 6, bird droppings – 1:12.
- Before the onset of winter, when the stems fall, they are mowed, leaving the buds of renewal at the bottom of the shoots.
During flowering, side small buds are removed, which favors the appearance of large peonies, which will decorate the site for a long time.
How to care for a peony before and after flowering?
Peonies must be looked after not only during the growth of buds and the appearance of buds, but also after flowering:
- The bushes are watered more actively in early summer and, when the buds of renewal are formed, in July to August 10. Spray with copper oxychloride until the buds appear to prevent fungal infections. The treatment is carried out with a solution prepared from ten liters of water and forty grams of copper oxychloride.
- During cutting for bouquets, do not forget to leave two lower leaves on the stems, and after the heads dry, the inflorescences are cut off. Do not leave cut and fallen leaves on the site, they can become a source of fungal infection.
- In order for flower buds to start on time, it is necessary to fertilize with potassium and phosphorus in early spring and in August. The bushes are also watered and loosened constantly, even after flowering in July. Moisturizing should be deep, not superficial. This is especially true for mature plants. Be sure to water abundantly two weeks before flowering and before wintering.
- For successful wintering, decorative bushes are cut off and covered with a layer of humus or peat. If reproduction and transplantation of peonies is planned, then the procedure is carried out in August, from the middle of the month.
Taking proper care of the bushes peonies, you can achieve the decorativeness of the plant, the duration of flowering.
