Growing peonies: flowering depends on planting
Some fans of peonies sometimes wonder if they can be grown at home. This question may be caused by the deprivation of a personal plot, health problems, when working in the country becomes a burden. Or just a person loves this flower so much that he wants to see it every day in his home.
The answer to this question, unfortunately for many, is negative. Growing peonies is possible only outdoors, as this flower has a very powerful root system. If it begins to grow at home, it will quickly wither away. Therefore, it is better to immediately come to terms with the fact that your peonies will grow on the street.
Gardeners fell in love with peonies for their large, beautiful flowers. They delight with flowering for about a week each. The bush as a whole blooms for about two weeks.
How to grow peonies?
- They are considered unpretentious in terms of soil, prefer cultivated loamy soil. Excess moisture will have a detrimental effect on the root system. In damp places, they are planted on an artificial hill, with good drainage.
- Peonies love light, grow well in the shade, but bloom poorly. Penumbra is easily tolerated no more than 3 hours a day. Do not place this flower closer than 1.5 from the building, next to trees and shrubs.
- For planting, pits are made about 60 by 60 cm in size, and from 70 to 100 cm are left between the bushes. The pits are prepared in the middle of summer so that the soil with fertilizers settles.
- Planting is carried out from mid-August until the end of September. You can do this in early spring, but such bushes noticeably lag behind in development and bloom poorly. If you do not divide the bush during transplantation and do it together with a lump of earth, you can avoid peony disease.
- After lowering the bush into the hole and sprinkling it, the soil should be pressed tightly with your hands and spilled abundantly with water so that the earth settles as much as possible. Add soil if necessary.
In order for the cultivation of peonies to be successful, it is important to correctly determine the planting depth in relation to the renewal buds.
- If they are deeper than 5 cm from the soil, the bushes will grow well, but bloom poorly.
- If they are above ground level, the bush will hurt and develop poorly.
