This flower is found in the wild in the south and center of Europe, in the Mediterranean, Transcaucasia and Asia Minor. Recently, the plant has been used by designers to create landscape compositions.

Verbaskum is a bright representative of the Norichnikov family, lives from two years or more.

On a straight stem, covered with oblong leaves, there are flowers collected in an ear, blooming from the bottom up. From the beginning to the end of summer, this plant pleases with fluffy, yellow and brown inflorescences, which are then formed into a fruit in the form of an oval box with small seeds.

Many species of mullein are accustomed to living in dry and hot climates, so they do not tolerate a humid environment. In open sunny places, the flower is more comfortable, but sometimes it is content with a light shade, then the flowers do not fall off for a long time. Having finished blooming, the plant completely discards the stem located above the ground.

Reproduction methods

Reproduction methods

Verbascum, like many garden plants, propagates by seed and cuttings. Seeds sown in the soil on warm May or June days, the sowing depth is no more than one centimeter. In the first year, rosettes of leaves appear from them.

If they are located very close to each other, then it is better to plant them at a distance of about half a meter. But transfer for this plant is always painful, so you should try to plant the seeds at once at some distance from each other.

I would like to note that this flower reproduces beautifully by itself, scattering seeds around itself.

features of cuttings:

  • Cuttings are made in late autumn, carefully digging out either all or part of the mother plant.
  • Seating branches are prepared up to seven centimeters long.
  • When planting them in the ground, you must not confuse the top and bottom. stalk, therefore, their cuts must be made different: the top is straight, the bottom is oblique, or vice versa. Kidney formation occurs only at the top of the root part.
  • When planting cooked branches in a container, try to keep the direction of their growth vertical.
  • Until spring, pots with verbascum shoots planted there are in a cool room.

Rare and valuable varieties of this flower are great for reproduction.

Plant care

Plant care

The verbascum plant is quite unpretentious, as they say, and the lazy one will grow it. When choosing a place for a flower, you need to know that he is a lover of the sun, a deep shadow is not for him: flowers will not delight with brightness and long flowering... Mullein blooms profusely when the ambient temperature reaches twenty degrees Celsius. Drafts are his primary enemy. But it is not afraid of frost either, it is not required to cover it for the winter.

Too wet soil is not for verbascum.

Moderate watering comfortable for him, and even if the ground becomes too dry, the long roots of the plant will extract life-giving moisture from the ground. But waterlogging will lead to rotting of the roots of the mullein. Top dressing the plant does not need it, it is used for these purposes itself, since it contains the nutrients necessary for green neighbors in the garden. Probably, hence the name - mullein.

Doesn't like verbascum transplants, since usually the root is damaged in this case due to its long length. Mullein prefers low acid soils, which should contain more sand and a little peat. It is advisable to loosen and weed for a plant as needed. Verbascum is a plant that even an inexperienced florist can grow.
