There are no particular difficulties in such a procedure as growing celery root. Root celery is a two-year-old plant. It has a number of characteristics associated with the variety.

What is the cultivation of celery root is

This plant can grow up to 40 centimeters across with proper care, and up to 30 centimeters in height. This is a very healthy vegetable crop. There are some requirements to follow, they are simple, but mandatory.

Growing celery root according to the rules

The climate must be specific. Temperate climates are best suited. But this culture tolerates a very strong drop in temperature.
If you create a shelter from straw, the seedlings will endure frosts down to -10. When the soil has sufficient moisture, plants can grow even with a little shade. Soil requirements are no different when compared to stalked celery.
The soil. You need a mixture with a low amount of nitrogen.

How is the planting and cultivation of root celery

Root celery takes 6 months to develop the original "bulbs". The seeds germinate rather irregularly. Sowing seeds during early spring is carried out within the walls of the premises. Seedlings grown in special trays are subjected to picking at intervals of about 6-7 centimeters. You can also transplant them into individual modules or pots. First, young plants are planted in open soil, with a height of 7 centimeters, because they need to be hardened. When planting between plants, the interval is maintained about 35-40 centimeters. The indentations of the rosettes of the leaves should certainly be slightly higher than the ground level.
Before planting, you need to process the seeds. This process has features:
  • The seeds of the plant contain a large percentage of essential oils, which greatly slows down their shoots, sometimes it takes about a month for this;
  • With proper processing, germination can be accelerated by about 18 days;
  • First, you need a bubbling procedure in water, which must be saturated with oxygen, for at least a day, and then - etch an hour in a solution of potassium permanganate;
  • The preparation is completed by washing with running warm water, and then the seeds are planted in the ground.
Celery grows better in soil, which contains a lot of organic matter. Peat can be considered the best option if it is mixed with humus and sod-type soil. The planted is sprinkled with moist coarse sand. This is how the air supply is organized to the seeds, and they grow much faster.
Now is the time to take care of the seedlings. She needs watering with warm water, and she will also have to carry out several dressings with nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. Celery seedlings will get stronger if you make a pick at the right time. More precisely, when the plant is in the 5-6 leaf phase. A week before the planned planting in open ground, celery seedlings undergo a hardening procedure. For this, the prepared seedling boxes are placed outside for periods of several hours per day. At the onset of the second decade of May, ready-made seedlings can be planted in open ground. The optimal time for planting seedlings is a cloudy rainy day. Celery has an obvious sensitivity to soil composition, so you need to take care of regular feeding. Drying out of the soil is unacceptable, celery is very moisture-loving. Lack of moisture will be fatal.

How to grow celery seedlings

It is supposed to transplant seedlings when its height reaches 9-10 centimeters, and also 6-7 leaves are formed. The seating spacing is about 35-40 centimeters. There comes a time when, towards the end of summer, thickened bases of growing shoots are formed, then several outer leaves will have to be removed so that the rosette is exposed. A layer of straw should be laid out in the direction around the base of the stems and until the beginning of frost. The thickness is 15-20 centimeters. Then the sockets will be protected.
After planting, the soil will have to be mulched. Watering is plentiful. Especially in dry weather. During the growing season, top dressing can be carried out.
Diseases and pests. They are similar to those found in stalked celery. But this type of greenery is rarely affected by them.
Harvesting of grown root celery is usually carried out from early fall to spring. "Onion" is used when its diameter becomes 8-14 centimeters in size. Further care will consist in the correct storage conditions. Celery can be left rooted in the ground for the winter. If the climate is cold, at the beginning of winter, the bulbs are dug up and transplanted into boxes in a cool place. This is how the cultivation of celery root is carried out.
