Planting raspberries in spring
For the cultivation of raspberries, both spring and autumn planting are traditionally practiced. The timing depends on several factors: if your area has predominantly cold winters, with little snow and strong winds, then it is better to plant raspberries in the spring.
Planting raspberries in the spring provides for preliminary soil preparation from the fall. The soil needs to be enriched with useful substances, since raspberries grow in one place for a long time (about 10 years) and depletes it. The area for the berries is cleared of perennial weeds, dug up, then organic fertilizers are applied in October.
Immediately before planting, planting trenches are prepared for raspberries, 50 by 50 cm wide and deep. The distance between the rows should be at least 1 m.Mineral fertilizers (superphosphate, potassium salt) are also added to the top layer of the soil near the trenches, as well as peat.
Planting raspberries in spring should be carried out in very short lines, as the plant releases buds very quickly. Raspberry shoots are planted to the depth of the root collar and the aerial part is cut off.
Care of young seedlings
After planting, you need to make sure that the soil does not dry out. If there is little rainfall in the spring, additional watering will be needed. Periodically, the soil is loosened and the site is cleared of weeds.
Raspberries respond positively to soil mulching. A layer of mulch 4-6 cm from humus, peat, straw prevents overdrying of the soil, the growth of weeds, improves the growth and fruiting of raspberries. In the fall, mulch becomes an excellent plant fertilizer.
Fertilizers are applied in the third year after planting, previously there is no need to do this.
We plant raspberries a little thicker and moisten the roots before planting. We did not fertilize the soil, but applied liquid fertilizers already at the time the raspberries began. Of course, from the timely pruning and fertilization of raspberries, the yield also increases significantly.
