Installation rules
In order to completely close the opening with roller shutters, it is important to correctly measure the finished window or door structure. You can find out the parameters of the openings, armed with a construction tape
If the width is up to 2 meters, you cannot do without additional amplifiers. And with the width of the window opening over 5 meters, you will already have to take care of the reinforcing aluminum profiles.
Installation of transparent polycarbonate roller shutters is possible in several ways, each of which has its own advantages and features.
Overhead. Installation of shutters is carried out on the outside, on the upper part of the working niche.
Built in
Such installation of the box creates the effect of a solid structure, without attracting undue attention to itself. The mechanisms located inside do not come into contact with moisture and are not subject to unfavorable factors from the outside.
Combined inside
Embedding the box in the niche of a door or window. The structure is difficult to see and is compact, which enhances the aesthetics of the interior.
Combined outside. The device of the frame in the opening from the street. Creates the illusion of integrity and does not spoil the aesthetics of the opening. The most suitable option for public and residential buildings, allowing full use of the window opening. The base of the roller shutters does not remain visible, therefore, when they are closed, they look like a continuous canvas. This is a very effective and stylish design option that makes the modern interior even more attractive.

Advantages and disadvantages of transparent roller shutters
Today, roller shutters made of transparent materials are considered the latest model. Both glass and polycarbonate look equally good and do their basic functions. However, like all things, they are not perfect. Before making a final decision, you should familiarize yourself in more detail with the advantages and disadvantages of designs.
- The main advantages of transparent roller shutters:
- reliability;
- long service life;
- ease of installation;
- ease of care and maintenance;
- in the event of a breakdown, parts are easily changed;
- high decorativeness and fire safety;
- providing additional noise insulation;
- low susceptibility to corrosion.
- Among the shortcomings, the following aspects can be distinguished:
- high cost of structures;
- in terms of resistance to burglary, they are inferior to metal gratings;
- in case of icing, the blocking sensor will work, which will lead to the need to debug the drive by the master;
- the need for an annual inspection in order to eliminate malfunctions and adjustments together with a specialist.
Did you know? Roller blinds let only 10% of the sunlight into the room, and, accordingly, much less heat is supplied. In hot weather, this device can be an excellent substitute for an air conditioner.
Any veranda, terrace or gazebo equipped with transparent roller shutters will look interesting and unusual. A similar structure can be mounted even in an open room. Its installation takes no more time and effort than a standard plastic one, and the roller shutters look much better.
Transparent roller shutters
Verandas, terraces, gazebos, loggias sometimes need to be protected from wind, precipitation, insects and other adverse effects. Transparent polycarbonate roller shutters can help in this. They perform a protective function without obstructing the view. To order transparent shutters for a terrace or gazebo with installation is offered by the company "Grandelux".
Design features
Transparent roller shutters for a terrace are assembled from polycarbonate sheets reinforced with an aluminum profile. They are no different in design from conventional metal roller shutters. The canvas assembled from transparent lamellas moves along metal guides, when it is lifted it is wound onto a shaft hidden in a protective box. The only difference is in the material for making the canvas.
What are transparent roller shutters made of?
Polycarbonate is a durable and tough material that holds its shape well, does not sag or deform. For the manufacture of roller shutters, monolithic polycarbonate with a thickness of 4 mm is used. It can be colorless or tinted, for example, bronze. The stiffness of the roller shutter curtain is given by an aluminum profile that connects the lamellas to each other. It is usually gray, white, black, or brown. But if desired, it can be painted in any RAL shade.
Polycarbonate has good transparency, the view through it is not distorted. During normal use, the surface is not scratched, does not become cloudy, and does not change color. You can use these blinds at any time of the year. They can withstand strong winds, snow load, bright sun and temperature changes.
The advantages of transparent roller shutters are obvious:
- protection from wind, precipitation, dust, insects, as well as from unauthorized access;
- aesthetic appearance;
- additional noise insulation;
- preservation of the overview without distortion;
- year-round use;
- simple control, the possibility of automation.
Transparent roller shutters do not spoil the view and increase the comfort of open spaces.
Installation and management
Transparent roller shutters for gazebos are made in different sizes. They cover openings of any height and width.
Installation is possible:
- in the opening - it is better to provide for it even at the design stage of the structure, in this case, you can hide the shaft and the box in the opening or inside the room;
- on the opening - the so-called surface-mounted installation, or overlapping installation.
It is easy to operate transparent roller shutters. They are lightweight, which is also compensated by a spring-inertial mechanism. Even with a large area of the canvas, it can be raised and lowered without effort. For convenience, it is possible to install transparent roller shutters with an electric motor. This way you can control the roller shutters from anywhere or, for example, raise and lower all the curtains at the same time.
You can buy transparent roller shutters with turnkey installation in the Grandelux company. Our specialists will take measurements, make, deliver and install roller shutters to make your gazebo, veranda, terrace even more comfortable and beautiful.
Choice: Cellular or Monolithic
Many brands of polycarbonate are produced, which have their own characteristics.
The assortment of each manufacturer includes material of different thickness, color, transparency.
But the most significant is the difference between the two varieties of polycarbonate, monolithic and honeycomb.
Monolithic polycarbonate:
has a continuous homogeneous structure without cells;
almost indistinguishable from glass in appearance;
anti-vandal material superior to cellular strength characteristics;
traumatic, when struck, a dent is formed in it, but the fragments do not fly away;
requires careful handling during transportation and installation due to susceptibility to scratching (more expensive varieties of monolithic polycarbonate are produced with additional protection against scratches);
costs more than a cell phone.
Cellular polycarbonate:
- it is created from 2 or more sheets connected by internal partitions that play the role of stiffening ribs, has a cellular structure;
- due to the presence of air channels, it has higher heat and sound insulating characteristics;
- more flexible;
- lighter than monolithic;
- a wider color gamut is usually available;
- cheaper because less raw materials are used to make it.
Cellular polycarbonate can have cells of different shapes, a different number of layers.
It is necessary to take into account aesthetic preferences - cellular and monolithic polycarbonate look different. For outdoor work, which includes the glazing of the veranda, it is imperative to choose a material with UV protection.
Polycarbonate sheets have different thicknesses; for glazing a veranda, a material with a thickness of 8-10 mm is optimal, if polycarbonate is honeycomb, two-layer is preferable. Cellular polycarbonate is produced in sheets 2.1 m wide, 6 or 12 m long, monolithic - 2.05 m wide, 3.05 or 6 m long.
The following brands of polycarbonate are presented on the domestic market:
- BEROLUX (Yug-Oil-Plast) - two- and three-layer cellular polycarbonate, transparent, colored and with the effect of blinds (transparent walls and colored internal partitions) 3.5-10 mm thick, warranty period of 10 years.
- NOVATTRO (SafPlast) - cellular polycarbonate with a different number of layers (1, 2 and 4), different channel shapes - triangular, rectangular, trapezoidal, 4-32 mm thick, 12 colors; monolithic with a smooth and corrugated surface, 1-12 mm thick, a warranty period of 14 years.
- POLYGAL (Polygal Vostok under license from Israel) - honeycomb, 4-40 mm thick, 8 colors; monolithic 2-10 mm thick, 3 colors. The best solution for glazing a veranda would be Polygal comfort, a material with a pigment that absorbs thermal radiation;
- CARBOGLASS (Karboglass) - cellular polycarbonate with a different structure and shape of channels, has 1-4 layers, thickness 4-25 mm, 14 colors; monolithic with a thickness of 1.5-14 mm, 3 basic colors plus 12 on request.
- Kronos (Kronos-trade) - cellular polycarbonate with 1-4 layers, triangular, rectangular and hexagonal channels, 3.3-25 mm thick, 8 colors.
Tips & Tricks
In order to preserve a beautiful veranda or terrace area, you just need to follow a few simple rules:
- Regularly inspect the glazing of the terrace with polycarbonate, if deep scratches or even cracks are found, it is necessary to wipe the surface with a special care product for transparent plastic. If the damage is significant, then it is best to replace the material, cover or seal with a thin transparent RET film;
- When preserving for the winter, the polycarbonate glazing of the summer cottage veranda is best covered with a thick plastic wrap. If one is not at hand, then an old bag or even paper glued to a soapy solution may work.
A polycarbonate sheet, no matter whether it is honeycomb or cast, should stand in the frame with a fairly large gap, 2-3 mm for each meter of canvas. If there is no heating on the veranda in winter, then the joints and cracks must be closed with soft silicone
You can take any plumbing composition, for example, Ceresit 15CS.
Therefore, with the first days of spring, it will be right to once again visit the dacha to close the veranda and check the condition of the glazing.

We build a polycarbonate veranda on our own
The statement that assembling the frame and sheathing it with polycarbonate is a simple job cannot be called an exaggeration. The terrace does not need a strong foundation. A 10 cm thick concrete screed for the floor and 40-50 cm deep pits for metal roof pillars will be enough to create a solid foundation.
The main task is to maintain the mounting dimensions of the frame so that the sheets of material fit exactly on the purlins. Metal does not forgive mistakes, therefore, the error in the installation of the frame elements should be 3-5 mm in length.
A standard sheet of material has a width of 205 cm and a length of 305 cm. Consider this when drawing up a roof plan, placing purlins and battens.
In order to make a veranda to the house from polycarbonate with your own hands with a minimum amount of waste, proceed as follows. Take the length of the slope equal to or a multiple of the length of the sheet (3.05 or 6.10 m). If the size of the building allows, then choose the width of the roof equal to the width of the sheet (2.05 - 4.10 - 6.20 meters, etc.) to avoid cutting. When joining sheets along the length and width, leave a compensation thermal gap of 4-6 mm between them.
The roof slope should not be less than 25 degrees. In this case, snow will not accumulate on the surface, increasing the load on the frame.
The optimal thickness of the sheet material for the roof and walls of the veranda is from 4 to 6 mm.
The installation sequence for a polycarbonate summer terrace looks like this:
- The site under the future structure is freed from the ground and leveled. In place of the removed soil, a layer of crushed stone with sand 10 cm thick is poured and rammed.
- Using a tape measure, the points of installation of the support pillars of the roof and digging holes for them (depth 40-50 cm) are marked.
- Reinforcement meshes are laid on the compacted preparation of sand-crushed stone mixture (to create a protective layer of concrete under the mesh, it is placed on pieces of brick or gravel). The main task of the mesh is to prevent the formation of shrinkage cracks in the screed. Therefore, it is not necessary to cook it from thick reinforcement. You can use rods with a diameter of 8-10 mm (step 15-20 cm).
- For roof pillars, you can take a profile pipe with a size of 60x60x3 mm. The same profile is purchased for the manufacture of purlins. Having cut the racks to the size of the drawing, they are installed in the pits, leveling them up, fixed with temporary ties and poured with concrete. At the same time, the floor screed is concreted.
- Having given a weekly exposure for the concrete mixture to set, proceed to the installation of the roof girders. They are fixed to the racks by electric welding.
- Having installed all the purlins and fixing the support profile with anchors on the wall of the building, proceed to the installation of the battens. A small pipe measuring 20x40x2 mm is suitable for it. The fastening of the lathing is also done using electric welding. To increase the accuracy of the installation, the installation points of the battens on the purlins must be marked in advance with chalk.
- The edges of the plastic are released beyond the contour of the roof frame so that the water flowing from them falls into the gutters (5-10 cm).
- After completing the installation and painting of the frame, it remains to close the veranda with polycarbonate. To perform this work well, you will need a special docking profile. It is equipped with a cover that protects the joints of the sheets from moisture penetration. The edges of the polycarbonate sheets are fixed to the crate using special thermal washers and self-tapping screws with a drill.
Thermal washers and self-tapping screws for mounting monolithic polycarbonate
It should be noted that the UP end profile is only used for mounting cellular polycarbonate. All other types of profiles are also suitable for monolithic.
Profile assortment for joining sheets
To install thermal washers, holes are drilled in plastic, the diameter of which is 3 mm larger than the diameter of the self-tapping screws (drill with a diameter of 8 mm, self-tapping screw 5 mm). This creates a gap to compensate for the thermal expansion of the sheet.
As we said, a closed veranda needs open windows.In the places of their installation, it is necessary to provide vertical racks of pipes, to which ready-made double-glazed windows are attached. If desired, simple windows for the veranda frame can be made independently. To do this, you need to weld the frame of their profile pipes, fix polycarbonate on it, weld the loops and hang it on the rack.
Verandas and their variety
Suburban and personal plots, as a rule, have the following types of verandas:
- built-in;
- attached.
The former are often built together with the house itself and have a common foundation with it. In this case, the roof is also common. But there are cases of building a veranda on a wide porch.
An attached veranda is a structure that is being completed to a previously erected cottage. At the same time, the veranda has its own foundation.
Such buildings have different types and forms of structures. For example, standard square or rectangular verandas turn into beveled or rounded corner objects. There are structures with one wall. You can also see verandas with six and eight corners.
Very often you can find a veranda - a "belt" for the house. They copy the shape of the whole balcony or smoothly transition into it on the second and third floors.
It's important to know
Polycarbonate parts are cleaned with methyl or isopropyl alcohol, mild soap solutions, heptane or hexane. Cleaning should not be carried out with partially hydrogenated hydrocarbons, ketones such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, strong acids or alkalis. To remove paint (graffiti) from polycarbonate sheet, use aromatic-free white spirit solvent, isopropanol. It is not recommended to rub the surface of the sheet with brushes, metallized cloth or other abrasive materials, to use polycarbonate at high temperature loads and in rooms with an aggressive chemical environment.
Forms of buildings
- Arched construction. The transparent roof of such a veranda in the form of a semicircle fills it with a lot of warmth and light. In winter, you can make a greenhouse or greenhouse from it. Building a round structure is no more difficult than a rectangular one. However, the outer wall will bulge out, but this will give additional interior space.
- Designs in the form of a square or rectangle. They turn out to be compact. Due to the absence of bulges, their installation is very simple.
- Building with a sloping roof. Its appearance can be compared to an iron. She always adjoins the wall of the house, which plays the role of a rigid support. Such an extension usually has two entrances: from the street and from the house.
- The veranda is semicircular. It is very good in terms of location. Its foundation is made of concrete blocks, the frame can be made of wood. The roof is made of two halves - a corrugated sheet with insulation material on top and cellular polycarbonate on the bottom.
- Open veranda. In this case, the roof area should be larger than the floor area. To protect the interior from debris and slanting rain.
Glazing with aluminum structures is our choice
Glazing of the veranda and terrace with an aluminum profile can be cold and warm. For cold glazing, aluminum facade systems and frameless glazing are used.
The option of warm glazing for verandas and terraces involves the use of wooden and plastic windows with profiles from various manufacturers, as well as facade glazing equipped with thermal breaks, due to which the rate of heat retention in the room is increased.
One of the most popular is the aluminum frame glazing method. What are the advantages of glazing a veranda with an aluminum profile?
- Aluminum profile veranda saves budget. Alu profile is much cheaper than other types of terrace and veranda glazing. The minimal and easy maintenance make this material the most popular among builders.
- Various aluminum structures allow you to cover any area with glass. It will perfectly cope with floor-to-ceiling panoramic glazing.
- The aluminum glazing of the veranda has a high flow rate. And thanks to the sliding structure, on warm days, you can transform the veranda into an open terrace and enjoy nature and fresh air.
- The light weight of the structures allows for aluminum glazing of terraces and verandas, even in those places where structures made of plastic or wood are contraindicated. An aluminum veranda is practical. the material does not rot, does not rust and retains its original appearance for a long time.

Installation of roller shutters
All manipulations at the initial stage are carried out as for standard roller shutters, that is, the box is mounted. The first step is to check the system and prepare the guides.
Did you know? The word "blinds" in translation from French means "envy, jealousy". The device received this name due to the fact that it allows you to observe any object, while remaining invisible.
Step-by-step execution of actions:
- Place the box on a flat surface and make markings on it. To mark the first point, you need to step back from the edge of 10 cm, all subsequent ones are set in increments of 40-50 cm.
- Convert the marked places into holes using an 8 mm drill.
- Attach the roller shutter cover to the wall of the structure and make 2 holes 4 mm in size at the edges for mounting rivets.
- Mark the fixing points to the wall on the side and drill them with an 8 mm drill.
- Assemble the structure by connecting the box with the guides.
- Carry out the marking of the opening for the installation of the canvas: attach the assembled system to the wall, transfer all points from it to the partition, not forgetting to check first the coincidence of the diagonals. Make holes at the specified points. Place dowels in them. If necessary, make openings in the lower part of the wall to fix the locking parts.
- After all of the above, proceed to the direct installation of the frame. To do this, remove the film from the canvas. Check the location of the holes on the box. They fasten all the parts together with self-tapping screws.
- Next, you need to fix the control system. To do this, markings are made on the wall, then holes are drilled and the tape layer with guides is fixed.
- Spacer rings are fixed in the holes of the box from above. After that, they proceed to the installation of the crossbars on both sides of the panel, which at this moment is wrapped around the shaft and led into the guides. Now you can fix the traction springs, which are mounted inside the shaft holes.
- After finishing the work, the box is closed, the remnants of the protective film are removed. After that, the plugs are mounted and everything is sealed with silicone.
- The final step will be to connect the mechanism with which the canvas will roll up and unfold.
