1 Key features of quick release bolts

Externally, hinged fasteners have very little resemblance to standard bolts. They are made in the form of a key with a ring (hole) crowning the end of the threaded rod. The ring, characterized by a small inner and a large outer section, replaces the hex head. The hole makes it possible to make cotter pins and fasten different types of carabiners during rigging.

Much less often, swing bolts are made with fork or sphere heads. A fastener with a fork head, when viewed from the front, is indistinguishable from a bolt with a hole. But when looking at this folding hardware in profile, it is noticeable that there is a slot in it, directed vertically. Fasteners of this type are intended for the hinge connection of individual components that make up industrial machinery and equipment.

Products with a spherical pommel are indispensable in situations where there is a need to press down any part of the structure by screwing in the hardware. In such cases, special rods are fed through the head, which has a hole. With their help, the fasteners are rotated (in fact, these rods function as levers that facilitate the process of screwing the bolt).

In everyday life, the considered folding fasteners are used when hanging ropes for drying clothes, hammocks, visors over entrance doors. They are used to install temporary partitions and walls during construction and repair work. In industry, eye bolts play an important role in lifting applications.

Folding hardware is manufactured in accordance with two GOSTs. The first (14724–69) describes fasteners that are used for machine tools. The second (3033–79) applies to hinged fasteners used for any other purpose. The international analogue of these State standards are considered the German DIN system 444.

2 GOST 14724-69 - basic requirements of the document

In accordance with the provisions of the State Standard, hardware is produced with a diameter of M5 – M20 (marking - from 7002-0551 to 7002-0604) with the following geometric parameters:

  • length - 25–250 mm (deviation - from ± 0.8 to ± 3 mm);
  • ring section - 12–65 mm;
  • weight - 0.009-2.883 kg.

GOST 14724–69 was developed for folding fasteners made of stainless steels and carbon steel alloys (40X, 09G2S, St.35 and St.20). If the hardware is planned to be used in an aggressive working atmosphere, a protective zinc layer is additionally applied to the bolts (galvanized galvanizing is performed).

Products in accordance with Gosstandart 14724–69 are used at machine-building plants and industrial enterprises, where the technological process is carried out using all kinds of machine tools and complex technical machines. Folding elements allow you to fix and mount various elements of such equipment in a short time, and then quickly dismantle them. Hardware in accordance with GOST 14724-69, in addition, are used to secure autoclaves and carry out rigging activities.

The described standard 14724-69 refers to other normative documents that establish:

  • parameters of chamfers and runaways for threads (Gosstandart 10549);
  • permissible deviations from the perpendicularity of the axis of the rod of the fastener and the hole in its ring (GOST 24643);
  • technical requirements for the production process (standard 1759.0);
  • the dimensions of the metric thread and the field of its tolerance (Gosstandart 24705 and 16093, respectively).

An anti-corrosion layer is applied to the surface of the bolts in accordance with the requirements of Gosstandart 9.306. It is possible to use other types of coatings if the customer approves them. Ready-made hardware of one standard size is packed in a special container, on which the trademark of the manufacturing plant, the number of the State standard and the designation of bolts are applied.

Swing bolts or DIN 444 with an eyelet are available in a wide range of standard sizes. The most popular options are M5, M6, M8, M10, M12. Products made in accordance with GOST 3033-79 are also in demand in a large-format version, they can reach the size M36. The main difference between the standards is the use of recommended materials.

According to DIN 444, it is allowed to manufacture metal products from carbon steel with or without galvanized coating. For bolts operated in an alkaline environment, stainless A4 Steel is used, suitable for use in the food and chemical industries. Austenitic steel hardware is suitable for use in sea or salt water environments. Brass can also be used.

According to the standards, the following types of eye bolts are allowed.

  • With round / ball head. A rare option that allows you to provide a clamp-type connection. When fully screwed in, a reliable lock is obtained, which can be easily dismantled if necessary.
  • With a hole for a cotter pin. The most common option. This swing lock set bolt is suitable for making cotter pin connections. They can also attach carabiners to the structure if rigging is required.
  • With fork head. It is similar to conventional ones, but has an additional slot that allows the use of hinged mountings.

Depending on the type of design, the swing bolts can be screwed in using the corresponding lever elements. In a rounded eyelet, this role is usually played by a metal rod of the corresponding diameter. In addition, flat levers can be used for products with an elongated profile.

Application

Swing bolts are an indispensable fixing element for rigging. They are used when loading, lifting bulky cargo, acting as an element for fixing carabiners on the surface of a platform, container, box or other type of container. In the bridge building area, strings of cable-stayed structures are installed and held with the help of such fasteners.

This type of hardware is also in demand in industry. Special heat-resistant options are used in furnaces where firing is performed at high temperatures and pressures. In milling and drilling machines, they often act as quick release fasteners, ensuring a secure hold during use. Mostly you can see the hinge bolts on the pulley covers that block access to the replacement spindle. For industrial purposes, metal products manufactured in accordance with GOST 14724-69 are used.

In the furniture industry, hinged fasteners are used to generate the downforce. When transporting hazardous substances, it is installed to press the cover in order to exclude contact of the transported substances with the external environment.

In everyday life, this type of fastener also finds its application. First of all, it is used for tensioning various rope and rope structures. Do-it-yourself laundry drying devices are fixed precisely with a swing bolt or screw of the same type. The metal product adheres well to concrete and wood, suitable for use in bathrooms, if a galvanized version is chosen.

In addition, the eye bolts are well suited for use in various designs in the garden and in the courtyard of a private house. With their help, you can hang a tent roof on stretch marks, make a temporary canopy from the sun, and strengthen a garden swing. There is no need to pre-prepare the fasteners, to combine them: the structure is already ready for use, it is enough to simply install it in the chosen place. This is useful for seasonal use of the hammock. At the end of the time of use, it can be removed and then hung up again.
