Silotherm ep-71, flame retardant neutral silicone sealant, cartridge 0.4 kg

Advantages and disadvantages

Fireproof sealants have a number of advantages that distinguish them favorably from materials with a similar purpose:

  • resistance to high-temperature action, no burnouts (for a range of media);
  • high degree of adhesion to most building and finishing materials;
  • the absence of hazardous substances in the composition, the release of toxins when heated;
  • dielectric properties;
  • no deformation, cracking due to elasticity;
  • the ability to withstand vibration, UV radiation, radiation exposure, the influence of moisture, detergents, microbial activity;
  • long period of operation (up to 40 years);
  • availability of convenient forms and various volumes for sale.

The disadvantages include the increased cost of such products compared to conventional sealants, but this pays off with a lot of advantages.

Organosilicon sealants

The basis of polyorganosiloxane (organosilicon) sealants is liquid organosilicon rubbers (molecular weight 20,000-100,000) of linear structure, containing side alkyl or aryl and terminal hydroxyl groups.

Mostly polydimethylsiloxanes and polymethylphenylsiloxanes have been used industrially.

Composition of organosilicon sealants:

  • silicone rubber,
  • mineral fillers (highly dispersed SiO₂, TiO₂, ZnO, etc.),
  • curing agents - monomeric or polymeric polyfunctional organosilicon compounds (for example, orthosilicic acid esters, alkyltriacetoxysilanes).

A typical silicone sealant contains (in parts by weight):

  • rubber - 100,
  • SiO₂ (grades U-333-30,
  • methyltriacetoxysilane - 6.

Vulcanization of organosilicon sealants

Vulcanization proceeds vigorously at room temperature. The reaction mechanism consists in the interaction of the terminal hydroxyl groups of polyorganosiloxanes with the functional groups of curing agents. As a result of vulcanization, compositions having the consistency of pastes or viscous liquids turn into a rubbery material. Depending on the nature of the vulcanizing agent, this reaction takes place in the presence of catalysts or under the influence of moisture in the air. Catalysts (organotin compounds, some amines) are usually used in combination with orthosilicic acid esters.

The sealing paste and the catalyst are stored separately (the latter is in a sealed container) and mixed before use (two-component silicone sealants). The pot life of such organosilicon sealants is 1-6 hours, the duration of their vulcanization at room temperature is 12-48 hours. In the presence of alkyltriacetoxysilanes, the sealants cure when exposed to moisture in the air. Such sealants, containing all the necessary ingredients (one-component silicon-edge sealants), are stored in sealed tubes. The duration of vulcanization after extrusion of the sealant from the tube depends on the thickness of the applied layer (for example, with a layer thickness of 3 mm, it is 24 hours).

Characteristics of vulcanized silicone sealants:

  • satisfactory physical and mechanical properties,
  • high weather resistance,
  • moisture resistance,
  • low corrosiveness towards metals,
  • unstable to the action of fuel oil,
  • designed for operation in air at temperatures from -70 to 300 ° C.
  • for their attachment to metal and other surfaces, special subcoats are used (for example, P-11, P-12E, primers SS-4004, SS-4056).

A special group of sealants based on liquid polyorganosiloxanes are compositions containing foaming agents. At room temperature, as a result of the simultaneous foaming and vulcanization processes, a rubber-like porous material (density 0.4-0.7 g / cm 3) is formed from such sealing compounds, mainly with closed pores.

Characteristics of foam sealants based on liquid polyorganosiloxanes:

  • good dielectric properties,
  • water absorption within 0.8-1.3% (30 days at room temperature),
  • brittleness temperature is about -76 ° С,
  • dielectric properties:
    1. Dielectric loss tangent - 0.0 01 - 0.0 4
    2. Specific volumetric electrical resistance Hom m (ohm cm) - 20-45000 (2 * 10 12 -4, 5 * 10 15)
    3. Specific surface electrical resistance, Volume (ohm) - 40 - 1500 (4 * 10 13 -1, 5 * 10 15)

Features of choice

In order to accurately choose a product, it is necessary to understand exactly where this material will be used, as well as what properties, basic or additional, it should have.

The main factors for the correct determination of the characteristics that form the final result - a successful purchase:

you need to determine the color scheme - for sealing joints in the flooring, you can use dark colors, for example, gray;
special attention should be paid to the fact that it is better to use a fire-resistant sealant ("Silotherm") for seams of surfaces with an increased risk of fire;
if renovation is planned in the bathroom, the white color of the seal is ideal for this. In such rooms, due to humidity, fungus often multiplies, which causes mold to appear in the joints of the shower stall or other seams - use a sanitary type of product.

Mode of application

For high-quality adhesion of the glue to the material, the surface should be prepared for work. It is necessary to remove dust and various contaminants, degrease the joints, cracks and other places intended for grouting with a special compound. The sealant is produced in tubes of 300 or 600 ml. For work, you need a plunger construction gun, into which a tube with a cut off top and a dispenser is inserted.

The prepared, dried joints or seams are filled with silicone, the excess should be removed with a damp cloth. If the glue mass is still frozen in the wrong place, it can be removed with a solvent. The appearance of the film occurs quite quickly, but the full drying of the working surface occurs in a day. Drying time depends on the thickness of the applied silicone layer.

What is it?

The composition of the silicone resembles a viscous, soft and elastic structure, which, when solidified, seals cracks, cracks and seams. Solid components such as sand, quartz and silicon are involved in the creation of a sealant, this gives strength and reliability to the treated surface.

One-part silicone sealants are available in alkaline, acidic and neutral types. Amines dominate in alkaline formulations. Acetic acid forms the basis of acidic products.In neutral sealants, the content of alcohol or ketoxime allows you to work with any surfaces, which cannot be said about alkaline and acidic products, the components of which are incompatible with marble, cement, plaster, non-ferrous metals and some types of plastics.

Requirements for fire retardant sealing of seams

Any fireproof sealant is manufactured in accordance with existing state standards, specifications, norms and other documents regulating production. Each product must receive a certificate of conformity, which is awarded after passing tests for resistance to heat, fire, etc.

The list of requirements for fire-resistant sealants is specified in the PPB JV "Fire protection", and additions to them are reflected in Art. 87, 88 FZ No. 123. The main requirement for water and gas tight fire retardant sealants is considered to be the ability to localize the flame, limit the spread of fire, and preserve the integrity of firewalls. As stated in the regulatory documents, fireproof sealants are used for fire protection purposes. Here are the main ones:

Views

Neutral silicone sealants are marketed by a variety of manufacturers. They are classified by composition, purpose, color palette. The choice depends on the place and purpose of the application. The purpose of the composition is indicated on the package. In most cases, sealants are divided into construction, automotive and special. They are produced for indoor, outdoor, wet or dry rooms.

There are several types of silicone sealants for their intended purpose.

Plumbing and sanitary. This type of product is equipped with antifungal additives, they repel water well, therefore they are used in rooms with high humidity: bathroom, swimming pool, kitchen, bathroom. The joints of pipes and sanitary equipment are treated with sanitary silicone. It has a high degree of adhesion, tolerates aggressive detergents well, and withstands high temperature conditions.

  • Automotive. Used to replace car gaskets. Silicone repels water, engine oil, but contact with gasoline is not recommended. The sealant can withstand temperatures up to +300 degrees, is strong and durable.
  • Roofing. This type of sealant has enhanced adhesion to bricks, wood, bitumen, metals, plastics, ceramics and concrete. It is irreplaceable in the processing of tile joints, for sealing chimneys, roof windows and other roofing works. It tolerates any climatic conditions well.
  • Construction. Neutral silicone sealant is used for all kinds of construction and repair work indoors and outdoors. It has good adhesion to plaster, metals, plastics and so on. UV resistant, will not age or discolor.
  • For work with bricks and stones. These products are designed for outdoor use, are well resistant to weather conditions, tolerate temperature fluctuations, and include fungicides that stop the development of fungal formations. Has good adhesion to porous surfaces, used for grouting, joining stone, plastic, glass.
  • Aquariums. The glue-sealant for glass does not contain harmful impurities and is non-toxic. Has good adhesion to glass and other smooth surfaces. Used for gluing the walls of florariums, aquariums, terrariums, vases and glossy showcases.

These are not all types of work where silicone sealant is used. In everyday life, there is always a use of a miracle glue that can "bind" any surface.

Application area of fire resistant sealants

Initially, fire-fighting compounds were made on the basis of clay and cement and were used for various construction work. Nowadays, modern refractory sealants are produced with the addition of various synthetic substances, polymers, and the scope of their use has expanded significantly. They are suitable for:
