With barbecue
The vast majority of recreation areas are not complete without a barbecue and a barbecue complex. There can be two options for the location of the barbecue:
Project with barbecue inside
- Cooking meat inside the gazebo - then a full-fledged furnace complex of the capital structure is equipped.
- Frying meat outside - in this case, an ordinary barbecue made of steel several millimeters thick standing next to it is enough.
In the case of an ordinary barbecue, it is necessary to additionally allocate a place for cooking the barbecue.
It may even be necessary to enclose the site with corrugated board and pour sand for safety. All this will create additional difficulties for owners of small plots.
If you are aiming at an indoor furnace complex, then get ready for the fact that the cost of construction will increase by 2-3 times. In addition to the furnace itself, it will be necessary to lay out the chimney and prepare a massive foundation from a monolithic slab with reinforcement.
If you are not afraid of the difficulties with the design of the gazebo and its cost, then this option is very interesting - it is elite, comfortable and looks simply amazing.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any structure, living gazebos have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, such structures will not protect against heavy rain or high winds, but they are best for relaxing in hot summer weather.
Among the advantages it is worth noting:
- A living gazebo is an environmentally friendly structure that will always have enough fresh air. Here you can hide from the burning sun, plunging into the world of pleasure - communication with wildlife and friends together with a delicious meal or tea.
- If you are not skilled in the installation of heavy metal or wood structures, then this is not a big deal. When building a living gazebo, you will need to plant plants and, as they develop, combine them into a single whole according to a simple scheme. The main thing is that your gazebo is in harmony with the natural component of your personal plot.
- Arranging a live gazebo is not an expensive undertaking. A simple frame for a gazebo is the only thing that you will have to spend material resources on. Plants can be used those that are available on the site. If you want to be more original, you can purchase inexpensive plants on the market.
Varieties and designs
All summer cottages can be divided according to the criteria of shape and material from which they are made.
According to the type of material used, there are 5 types of arbors.
Wooden
The most common option for self-production. Such structures do not require a solid foundation and are quite easy to install, environmentally friendly and multifunctional. If desired, even a large arbor made of wood can be made collapsible and moved, if necessary.
Brick
This is a much stronger and more durable building when compared to a wooden one. But for its construction, you just need a solid foundation. A brick gazebo can serve as both a summer kitchen and a place for receiving guests and organizing a barbecue. If there is a holiday with children in the gazebo, you can hang a swing or a hammock inside.
Polycarbonate
The main advantage of this material is its low cost. But the presence of mobility and resistance to temperature extremes are also encouraging. Outside, such gazebos are often covered with paint.
Suitable for any foundation, but it is rather difficult to make it yourself.
Wrought iron
An option close to metal, but more beautiful and, accordingly, more expensive. In addition, a wrought-iron gazebo is only suitable for use in the summer. They are not made glazed either. Ideal for summer residents who care more about appearance than functionality.
There are arbors in shape.
Rectangular (square)
A universal solution that can be made from any material. Will fit into every area, regardless of whether to place it in the middle or along the perimeter.
Multifaceted
This is often a hex or octagonal gazebo, but theoretically you can improvise with the shape. It also requires a foundation and is difficult for independent design, but it looks much more original than a standard-shaped gazebo.
Gazebo-canopy
It looks like a kind of tent, which can be easily disassembled if necessary. Will fit well in a small area, because it does not take up much space. The structure of the canopy itself is very simple, but again you need a foundation for installation. The roof is usually made of tarpaulin or special canvas.
Round
This form will appeal to lovers of romance. A round table, benches or a flower arrangement around the perimeter will perfectly fit into the gazebo. In terms of versatility, such a gazebo is comparable to a square one and will suit any landscape.
Corner
This shape is very practical and allows you to install a gazebo even in a small area.
Also, all gazebos by type of design are divided into open and closed. Everything is clear here: the former lack walls (or some of them), and the latter are designed like a real country house: with a roof and walls.
With a pitched roof
An interesting option for saving extra money might be a 3 × 5 gazebo with a pitched roof. If you do not drive too much with a rafter system and a roof, then you can make a very high-quality roof at a minimal price. For this, corrugated board or monolithic polycarbonate will be enough.
If you do not plan to produce glazing and capital insulation of the gazebo in the future, then you can completely do with an ordinary roof without any frills.
It is absolutely not necessary to put a soft roof or ondulin on the roof, if you do not pursue any specific goals - reducing noise from rain, aesthetics, and the like.
Projects
Any construction work begins with drawing up drawings. You can find a suitable ready-made project or make your own, taking into account all the features of a particular site and your preferences. If a sufficiently skilled craftsman starts construction, then he can use a freehand drawing, that is, a simple diagram. In other cases, it is necessary to take into account all sizes and proportions in the sketch on paper. Naturally, at the design stage, you need to decide on the location of the gazebo.
By the type of construction, open gazebos (beams with a roof), half-open (the presence of one or two walls) and closed (all walls with windows are present) can be distinguished.
When choosing the shape and dimensions of the gazebo, you need to take into account the size of the surrounding area, the number of people who will rest inside, the size of the furniture and the intended placement of the barbecue / oven.
If the summer cottage is quite large, a small gazebo can get lost on it. In this case, it is better to build a whole set of a gazebo, a swimming pool, a veranda with panoramic windows - in a word, everything that has enough imagination.
When calculating the size of the future gazebo, you need to take into account that each person needs about 2 square meters. So, in a gazebo with a size of 6x4 m, up to 10 people can comfortably accommodate. If the gazebo is built exclusively for the recreation of a small family, then you can get by with the standard dimensions of such buildings - 4x4 or 3x3 square meters.
The type of gazebo directly depends on whether it will be used in the winter. If so, you need a warm glazed house with all the amenities. An all-season polycarbonate gazebo with sliding windows can also be adjacent to a blank wall on the back of the house.
Decorating
The interior of the gazebo depends on your personal preferences and understanding of beauty. A table with benches or a standard set of country furniture can be located here. The main requirement is convenience for the user and a harmonious combination of furniture with the nature of the gazebo.
You can also experiment with design styles. For example, to decorate a living gazebo, you can use a country style that allows you to use different gardening tools and old household items. You can make a bench or table from an old cart. If you fix the old rake, then you get an original set for storing cups and towels. A cracked clay pot is suitable for creating an original candlestick. There are a lot of ideas for rework, and everything here depends on your imagination.
The main part of the decor is the selection, planting and formation of plants. This process may seem difficult at first, but when the plants have already been planted, and their features have been studied and accepted by you, then everything will become much easier. Some owners of the backyard arrange gazebos from living trees. This idea looks very original.
If you have chosen climbing plants, then you will need to form the basis of a living arbor from them. In this case, the branches must be fixed on the frame and laid on the roof carefully, so as not to injure them. As the plants mature, you will need to shape the crown, prune it, remove interfering parts and dry branches.
Installing the gazebo will take you 1-2 days. Growing plants, of course, will take more time and effort. If you are well versed in ornamental plants used for such structures, then after 1.5 months you will be able to see a noticeable result.
Features of the design of a live gazebo
In addition to building the gazebo itself, to complete the picture, it needs to be supplemented with decor details and, corresponding to the general concept, plants.
After you install the posts, build the harness. We can assume that you have coped with the formation of the frame, and your structure will stand firmly and confidently. The walls, more precisely the lower part of the space between the pillars, is best done in the same way as the entire structure.
Learn how to use logs in landscaping.
Place shelves of rough-cut building boards between the posts, at a height of about 1 m parallel to the ground
Such supports can be made from logs of the same height as the railings - 1 meter. They should be fastened with corners and self-tapping screws.
Under the railing, you can make a kind of lattice from curved branches, and then let climbing plants along them, which will be described below.
Did you know? The word "kiosk" is usually used to refer to a small retail outlet where they sell jewelry, newspapers and magazines. This word came to Russia from France in the 18th century, and meant “a gazebo, a small pavilion with flowers».
Decor
In such a gazebo, furniture made of wood will look appropriate: tables and chairs, the base of which are stumps of the right size.
In the same vein, you can decorate a ceiling lamp. Although the old vintage "kerosene stove", deer antlers or a driftwood similar to them will look no worse.
Such a roof can also be considered a decorative element: lay a layer of waterproofing on the OSB board, and on top - building boards covered with stain and oil impregnation. Another roof design option is straw or reed.
The same goes for the floor. It can be sewn up with boards, but the following solution will look more beautiful and in accordance with the general concept: fill the space between the logs with sand mixed with fine gravel, tamp and put paving slabs. On the same logs, nail the circles cut from the tree trunks so that they are flush with the tiles. Fill up the space between the tiles and wooden rings with fine gravel.
It will look appropriate next to the gazebo a wheel from a cart and a small wattle fence, with inverted jugs sticking out on racks.
Small details, such as a horseshoe above the entrance, geraniums in a pot, will complement the overall picture of the structure, adding the final touch. In addition, all kinds of metal forged parts are perfectly combined with a building in a similar style. For example, install a wrought-iron lattice in the corner of the gazebo, such as a balcony, as a fragment of the fence.

Selecting and planting trees
Naturally, the first thing that comes to mind regarding the design of such a gazebo is to plant purely Russian trees nearby: spruce, birch, mountain ash. This is a good option, especially a weeping birch crown.
But the spruce gives darkness, so do not plant a large number of these trees, 2-3 trees will be enough. But other conifers will look great: thuja, cypress, juniper.
It is worth paying attention to the Chinese poplar. It grows fast, has good immunity and looks great
Shrubs that are easy to care for, for example, boxwood, barberry, spirea, Fortchun's euonymus, will perfectly complement the picture.
Along the pillars and walls, you can put girlish grapes or other types of vines: clematis, hops, woodworm, ivy, honeysuckle, akebia, etc.
And of course, species with a weeping crown, first of all, willow and birch. In addition, you can plant Japanese larch, dangling birch, rough elm Pendula, willow pear Pendula, weeping sakura, etc.
Naturally, fruit trees will also be appropriate - apple, pear, cherry, plum. The choice of fruit species is also good because in a small garden, where every inch of free space counts, plants that carry a purely aesthetic function are an excessive luxury. But the tree, which is part of the landscape composition, which also yields a harvest, is exactly what is needed for a small plot.
A gazebo made of tree trunks, made in the style of a "hut on chicken legs", can become your favorite resting place. It is suitable for both an afternoon siesta and a barbecue picnic in the company of friends. In addition, children will simply be delighted with such a structure.
Frame
The frame can be made of timber, metal or natural stone. In any case, it must be stable and withstand not only the weight of the roof, but also precipitation that can accumulate on it.
The most popular materials are wood and metal. Less commonly, plastic and brick are used.
Metal advantages:
- high strength;
- ease of installation on any foundation;
- mobility (if necessary, such a frame can be disassembled into beams and moved);
- fire resistance (in such a gazebo you can install a brazier and not be afraid of fires).
The disadvantage of a metal frame is the likelihood of rust. But with proper care, this can be easily prevented.
Wood is used more often than metal. One of its main advantages is environmental friendliness.
Step-by-step construction of a gazebo from tree trunks and branches
Further, it is described in detail about the main stages of the construction of the gazebo. Separately, it should be said about the tree trunks necessary for the construction of the structure. You will need 4 pieces of approximately the same length - 2.5–2.7 m. The birch posts of the gazebo will look great.
Naturally, beautifully curved trunks look picturesque, but don't look for heavily deformed trees.
When choosing the material for the racks, mentally draw a vertical line up from the center of the bottom of the barrel. It is desirable that a large part of the upper cut is located on this line. Otherwise, the center of gravity will be shifted at the rack and it will need support itself, instead of carrying the roof on itself.

Foundation
The foundation for the gazebo will be of a columnar type.
They do it like this:
- At the prepared place, you need to dig 9 holes 40-50 cm deep, about 30-35 cm wide. The holes are located in 3 rows of 3 at equal distances, forming a square in projection.
- At the bottom of each corner hole and in the central one, pour a layer of sand (15 cm) and crushed stone of the same height, all this is good to tamp and lay the tiles.
- On the tiles, in each of the five holes, lay out the pillars of brick in such a way that they are 2 pieces higher than the ground level. Lay each row crosswise with the previous one. Cover the top of the pillars with roofing material.
Installation of pillars
This operation is performed as follows:
- The bottom of each of the remaining four holes, located in the middle, pour a layer of sand 10 cm and the same amount of rubble, tamp well.
- On the bottom cut of each pillar, nail 2-3 small boards so that together they form a 30 × 30 cm square.
- Place tree trunks at the bottom of each hole covered with sand. Using a board and a level placed on two pillars, check the height of the supports. If the height of a pillar is lower, it doesn't matter, add sand and tamp it.
- Pour the racks with concrete. M 250 is suitable (cement, sand, crushed stone and water - 2: 4: 7: 1).
- While the concrete is drying, depending on the weather for 2-3 days, the trunks must be kept upright. To do this, you can use inclined supports, barely nailed to the posts.
Frame formation
While the posts are drying, you can tackle the lower strapping. It needs to be made from a 10 × 15 cm bar installed on the edge. The elements are fastened in the corners, on the pillars of bricks, using the method "in the floor of the tree".
Install logs between opposite sides of the strapping using self-tapping screws and metal corners.
Important! If the top harness does not lie flat on the cuts of the trunks, do not despair, this is easy to fix. To achieve a clear horizontal position of the structural elements, place wedges under the boards, where necessary. Make the upper strapping from a 5 × 15 cm board
The boards should be connected by the same method as the lower strapping, "in the floor of the tree", laid on the upper cuts of the trunks and secured with self-tapping screws, having previously set the level in all planes. As a result, you should have a lower harness with lags, lying on brick pillars, and 4 trunks connected by an upper harness

Roof installation
The roof will be traditional gable. Since it is only a visor (without waterproofing and insulation), its design will be lightweight. You need to collect the roof on the ground.
This is a traditional rafter structure, the base and frame of which are made of 5 × 15 planks, rafters of 2.5 × 15 planks. The rafters need to be sheathed with an OSB plate, on which to lay ondulin or bituminous shingles. Install the finished roof on the upper strapping and fix it on self-tapping screws and metal corners.
Seat selection
When choosing a site for a gazebo, you must take into account its appearance. It will look like a fairytale hut, so you need to choose the appropriate place. For example, in the far corner of the garden, near the old trees.
The goals for which you are building the structure should also be taken into account: if you are planning gatherings with friends and a barbecue, a corner remote from your home is quite suitable. In the event that the room is intended for daily meals, it is better to place it closer to the home.
If your dacha has a reservoir, you should consider placing the structure next to it. However, this neighborhood has its own nuances: firstly, there are many midges near the ponds, which can darken the rest. Secondly, in late summer - early autumn it is already cool near the water.
The place you have chosen for the construction must be freed from excess vegetation, leveled and marked with pegs and twine.
Did you know? One of the first mentions of gazebos in Russia, which can be found in written sources, is dated 1680. Then Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich installed in the garden «carved wooden loft» - that is what a similar structure was called then.
Floor construction for a wooden gazebo
The next step after installing the supports is the lower strapping of the vertical posts. For this, a bar with a section of 50x150 mm is used. The floor frame is carried out by mounting lags, which are located at a distance of no more than 45 cm from each other. This will allow the frame structure to support the weight of the wooden platform. The lags are attached to the horizontal strapping bars using angle brackets, after having drilled the mounting holes for self-tapping screws.
Scheme of arranging the floor of a closed gazebo with insulation.
Next, proceed to the installation of intermediate racks. They will subsequently take on the weight of the wooden roof structure and will be used to fix the upper horizontal rail. The racks are attached to the logs with nails. The same rule applies here as for corner supports - all posts must be installed strictly vertically.
As soon as the floor frame is assembled and intermediate supports are installed, they proceed to the installation of the flooring from the board. For the floor, a board is used that is suitable for outdoor use, which withstands well the effects of natural factors. Then you will not have to find out after a short period of time that the boards have rotted in some places.
The floor of the gazebo is made of wood treated with moisture-repellent compounds.
Nails or self-tapping screws are used to attach the board to the crate. Fix the board using two nails or self-tapping screws from each end.
On a note! If nails are used to fasten the boards, it is necessary to make holes for them in advance. This will help prevent cracking of the wood.
After laying the plank floor, proceed to the upper horizontal connection of the arbor supports, using a beam of 100x100 mm. Do-it-yourself strapping of the pillars of a gazebo made of wood (photo examples give visual information) is carried out by sawing out locks from the ends of the timber, which are connected to each other and fixed with two nails.

Roof
The gazebo can have a roof of absolutely any shape. The main requirement is that it should not be too heavy. If there is a desire to make a massive roof, then even at the design stage it is worth considering a suitable foundation.
The shape of the roof should be well combined with the style and material of the gazebo, as well as with the weather conditions of the area. For example, on snowy areas it is illogical to build shallow structures: snow will collect on the roof, which can lead to the complete collapse of the building. Also, do not erect roofs with a steep slope in places with strong winds.
But, in addition to functionality, it is also worth taking into account the aesthetic features of this or that form of the roof.
Single slope
The simplest form for self-production is the construction. Shed roofs are often built for structures of four walls. Shapes are appropriate: rectangular, square, diamond-shaped or trapezoidal.
Gable
Ideal for rectangular buildings. The rafter system (sloped or hanging) depends on the project and the material of the roof.
Four-slope
It is this form that is used to cover most summer cottages. There are two types: in the form of four triangles connected at the vertices, and in the form of two trapezoids and two triangles (hip).
If the soul does not lie in the most common forms, you can show imagination and make a roof with a complex geometric shape. For example, a Chinese-style multi-tiered roof will look very colorful and unusual.
There are also hipped roofs. They have the same principle as the four-slope one, but it looks much more original and is perfect for round and polygonal buildings.
Particularly inventive summer residents erect gazebos with domed, spherical, tower, combined roofs.
A reed roof will be an excellent design solution. Since ancient times, reeds have been used as a roof. And it is no coincidence: the material has a water-repellent and heat-insulating property.
Diy gazebo with a hipped roof
Building a square gazebo with your own hands is not an easy task, you need to take into account the skills that you must master, as well as the tools and materials needed to complete the work. However, if you make the right plan that suits your tastes and needs, and of course your budget, and use the right woodworking techniques, you can build a pretty decent gazebo. Buying a ready-made kit or hiring a professional is also an option, but if the budget is limited, perhaps making a gazebo with your own hands will be the best solution. Choosing the right plans and designs is a real challenge, as there are so many alternatives. Therefore, you should write down the required features and budget on paper from the very beginning. Then you need to develop a plan, taking into account the necessary materials and tools. Buy the right materials for outdoor structures so that the gazebo does not fall apart in a month. In general, there are step-by-step diagrams in the gallery, you can read a description of each step on the website.
Another example of how to make a square gazebo with a hipped roof. In principle, this is the same as the previous one, only it is shown in more detail how to make a roof for a gazebo and a railing. You need to properly design an open gazebo. You need to decide what the dimensions will be and if, for example, you want to add a barbecue or barbecue, this must be taken into account when planning. The options are almost limitless, but you must remember that each additional feature comes with additional costs, so a balance must be struck between benefits and costs. Choosing the right gazebo design is a tough decision as there are many potential alternatives: on the one hand, you can build an octagonal gazebo, a rectangular structure, or just a square one. This article shows you how to build a square gazebo in a couple of weekends, while saving a lot. All this is not so difficult, provided that you know how to hold a hammer in your hands and use a hand saw.
