Summer kitchen project: a cheat sheet of important sizes
Important dimensions for the convenience of a summer kitchen:
- Height of tables 85-90 cm
- Worktop width 60 cm
- The distance to the sides of the grill / pizza oven is 30 cm on one side and 60 cm on the other.
- The distance to the sides of the sink is 45 cm on each side.
- The minimum size of the working surface is 90x60 cm
- Minimum length of storage shelves 50 cm
Most often forgotten: the minimum distance on both sides of the sink.
How much space do you need at the table
The most common mistake when choosing a summer kitchen project is to underestimate the size of the minimum dining area. In fact, based on our plans, we can calculate the required space quite accurately.
Family holidays. A 2.5 m long table can easily accommodate 6-8 people. Ideally, about a meter of space should remain between the table, walls and other furniture in the kitchen, so that it is convenient to both leave the table and walk around the table.
Family dinner. A small dining table measuring one meter by one meter provides comfortable seating for 4 people.
Crowded parties. Your guests can be accommodated both in the house and near the summer kitchen. Provide them with a place to sit - it should be separate from the food preparation area, and is a separate table with chairs. For a built-in summer kitchen, also add a canopy bar above the work surface that extends 40 cm from the base of the table to comfortably accommodate your knees.
Construction of a kitchen with a gazebo
Before starting construction work, you should decide on the location of the future structure. First of all, you should think about the possibility of lengthening communications so that there is light in the gazebo, if necessary, a sink and a stove. When installing a brazier or stove, fire safety rules should be observed. According to the regulations, such a structure should be located no closer than 7 meters from other buildings. It is advisable to choose a shady corner among the trees, away from the roadway, toilet and compost pit. If the site has a pool, lake or pond, a gazebo with a summer kitchen can be placed there and equipped with a full-fledged lounge area. If the family has small children, the play area should be within sight so that parents can look after the kids from the gazebo.
Erection of the foundation
Depending on the type of gazebo chosen and the materials used in the construction, the foundation can be flooded, columnar or strip. The first option is most often used. Before starting work, you should clear the ground of debris and remove the topsoil along with the plants. Around the perimeter, it is necessary to dig a depression of 30–40 cm, cover it with rubble or sand, and tamp it well. Then the surface is poured with a 10 cm concrete solution or a ready-made concrete base is installed.
The logs placed on the foundation must be treated with an antiseptic
Installation of the frame and walls
4 supports are installed along the perimeter, to which horizontal beams are attached. Beacons will help prevent skewing of the structure. During construction, foam blocks can be used in combination with wooden floors.
Vertical posts are mounted on wooden pins
Support posts are aligned strictly vertically and temporarily fixed with boards
Roof installation
After tightening the beams, it is necessary to install the rafter system. For ease of installation, experts recommend using polycarbonate. It is desirable that the roof is pitched, that is, it is made with a slope. This will prevent the accumulation of water on the surface.To do this, beams of different heights should be fixed on opposite sides.
Preparation of the base for the roofing
Soft shingles are best suited for gazebos - they look attractive and do not heat up in the sun
Finishing work
When cladding the facade, clapboard, siding or natural stone are most often used. The latter option is impractical for the complete construction of the gazebo: it is better to choose it when finishing the basement, where it will be beautifully combined with green bushes. Wooden lining fits perfectly to the foam block, but requires special care and installation skills. Siding panels are considered the best option, the service life of which significantly exceeds other materials. They are lightweight, resistant to moisture and temperature extremes, and are also inexpensive.
The most affordable finish is wood paneling or vinyl siding
The workplace can be a self-made frame structure with a purchased countertop laid on top
To equip a gazebo with a barbecue, you will need certain skills, so experts do not recommend installing the structure yourself. An experienced craftsman will help you determine the size of the furnace and make a high-quality installation. It should be borne in mind that such a kitchen will be much larger, in addition, you will need to lengthen the communications in order to install the sink. Refractory bricks will help to extend the service life of the barbecue. When finishing the floor, it is strongly recommended to use tiles that are resistant to high temperatures.
Advantages of a brick barbecue oven
Brick barbecue ovens made of bricks are versatile and give the opportunity to cook a range of delicious dishes. The sheltered recreation areas with the barbecue ovens located in them are convenient for use in any weather, regardless of the season.
The stoves look beautiful and are a great addition to the interior of any area.
Furnaces can be equipped to use any type of fuel, which is also their undoubted advantage.
The disadvantage of brick-built barbecue ovens is their large size. In addition, fire safety measures force us to take a very serious approach to their placement on the site.
Erection of walls and roofs
Usually, by erecting open summer kitchen, initially a wooden frame is erected, which is constructed from a bar (with a section of about 15x15). If, as such, the foundation was not laid, wooden pillars are buried in the corners of the future kitchen to a depth of about 50 cm, which are poured with concrete. Further, beam elements are installed, connected by metal corners. After that, the structure (outside and inside) is sheathed with finishing materials, the choice of which depends on the chosen style. These can be boards or plywood treated with special compounds that prevent rotting. Often siding or plastic lining is used for these purposes, primarily due to their water resistance and the absence of the need to periodically re-paint them.
Wall boards must be treated with special compounds that prevent the decay process
As a rule, the construction of a summer kitchen is carried out in accordance with the general style of the house.
If there is a foundation, a wooden frame from a bar is laid in the base, which is fixed with metal corners at the points of attachment to the foundation. In the future, the construction of the frame repeats the process described above.
When building a closed kitchen, brick, foam blocks or stone are used to build walls.In this case, a wall thickness of half a brick will be quite enough. Inside, the walls can be sheathed with plasterboard, plastic, clapboard or plastered - only the frost resistance of the selected material can act as a limitation, because the room will not be regularly heated in winter.

Octagonal closed summer kitchen project
For a summer kitchen, the arrangement of a pitched roof will be justified, for which it will be enough to erect one wall of the beam structure slightly higher than the opposite
When choosing a roofing material, it is important to consider the strength of the frame. If there are practically no restrictions for a closed kitchen (slate, metal tiles, composite tiles, bituminous tiles, corrugated board, seam roofing, polycarbonate), then for an open kitchen you need to choose a lighter material, for example, polycarbonate or bituminous tiles

Construction of a brick summer kitchen
Based on the size of the prepared site and financial capabilities, we are preparing a project for a summer kitchen made of bricks and an estimate of costs.
There are two ways to accomplish this preparatory step:
- draw sketches and make calculations on paper, the main difficulty will be the lack of experience and the need to master new knowledge and skills on the go;
- use special software, you can download it from the network or carry out design using online services.
For a beginner "architect" the second option is preferable. Ready-made drawings with explanations and tables with calculations can be printed or downloaded to a mobile device - tablet.
Laying the foundation
Practice shows that the simplest and most reliable base is a strip base, reinforced with steel rolled or fiberglass
Marking the trench and carrying out earthworks is not particularly difficult, and you should not focus on this (see also the article Brick foundation for a house: properties and manufacturing)
Reinforcement of the strip foundation
The reinforcing belt is made of four rods laid along the entire perimeter, two in two rows. The correct spatial position is ensured by short rods that tie the rolled metal together.
Laying the foundation of the summer kitchen
The foundation is filled with self-made concrete, which is a mixture of cement grade 500, river or quarry sand, crushed stone of the middle fraction and water. The work is quite hard and monotonous; it is better to use a concrete mixer to speed it up.
However, in the absence of the latter, you can get by with a suitable container or even a sheet of metal for mixing the components.
Erection of the basement and walls
After the base has dried, we proceed directly to the construction work. Silicate or red building bricks are excellent base / plinth material.
It is important to achieve a strict horizontal plane of the masonry. Control is carried out by the building and hydraulic level
The upper edge of the plinth must be isolated from moisture penetration from the ground into the wall. To do this, roofing material or an analogue is laid on it.
Basement waterproofing
The walls are laid in the following order:
- double silicate brick M 150 is laid out evenly along the place of work so that the bricklayer does not have to make unnecessary movements;
- at the extreme points, we lay several bricks on the mortar, forming corners, and check their mutual position with a hydraulic level;
- pull the cord along the row, which will serve as a guide for the outer edge of the stone;
Wall masonry with tension cord control
- the horizontality of the brick in the direction transverse to the plane of the wall is controlled by instrumental methods;
- when performing masonry, we leave window and door openings, in their upper part jumpers are installed from a steel corner.
A stove is needed at the place where food is prepared, it can be both a gas and an electric device. However, a classic wood-burning stove will come in very handy here, and not only for its direct use.
In cold periods, it serves to heat the room. Good brick kitchen stoves are quite difficult to build, and it is better to hire specialists to build them.

Roofing
Ceilings and rafter systems are made of timber.
Installation of roof truss system
The overlap consists of beams and a flooring of boards, which fits into the gap between them on the support rails. The void is filled with a sandwich made of a vapor barrier and thermal insulation.
Mineral wool is mainly used as a heater. The brick wall in the kitchen is load-bearing and serves as a support for the rafter system (see also the article Insulation for brick walls: choosing, evaluating, installing).
The simplest roof is single-pitched, with a slope of at least 10%. This option is also the most inexpensive. However, a structure with such a roof looks squat and unpresentable.
Gable roofs with symmetrical slopes or sides of different lengths look better.
As a roofing material you can use:
- shingles;
- ondulin;
- metallic profile;
- slate.
The choice determines the cost and capabilities of the homeowner.

Planning and arrangement
A summer kitchen design is being designed in a private courtyard, which aesthetically matches the main residential building. At the same time, in the country, they do not use a strict style binding of one structure to another.
Having built a summer kitchen, they begin to arrange the premises. For this, interior decoration is performed. For example, you can sheathe the walls with plastic, drywall, clapboard. Next, furniture is installed, electricity is connected, i.e. make the structure functional. So, to turn a kitchen space into a livable space, you need:
Equipment
For a building to become a kitchen, appropriate equipment must be installed in it. The main kitchen equipment is:
- Cooking surface, oven, stove;
- Dish sink;
- Refrigerator for storing food;
- Hood;
- Auxiliary devices: meat grinder, microwave oven, mixer, double boiler, other items.
Furniture selection and zoning
The choice of furniture will depend on the type of building in question. For open structures, items without soft finishes that absorb moisture are suitable. They use chairs, benches, a table made of wood or plastic. There are no restrictions for enclosed spaces. A soft dining set, a sofa for relaxation will look great here.
If the kitchen and dining room are not separated by a partition, zoning of the room is often performed.To do this, you can make a floor from different building materials, paint the walls with two colors, equip a podium. You can also use a screen, furniture. Often they use a bar counter, like those installed in a cafe. She perfectly divides the room into a workspace and a recreation area.
Lighting
It is very important to light the space correctly. If the room is small, attached to a house or cottage, then a few lamps and street lighting of the residential building itself will be enough
For large buildings, whether it be frame kitchens or closed-type buildings, one lamp or a central chandelier is not enough. The presence of:
- General lighting. Placed in the center of the room or above the dining table. Standard, flat chandeliers are used;
- Illumination of the working area. The place where the dough is kneaded, meat products are cut, potatoes are peeled, it is necessary to additionally equip it with rather bright lamps. They are placed at the bottom of wall cabinets, in the form of LED strips, or floor lamps are installed;
- Illuminated dining area. First of all, the location of the table relative to the window is taken into account. It doesn't require too much light. Enough wall sconces, lamps with adjustable suspension.
Landscaping - selection and planting of plants
The object will look more impressive if it is landscaped. It is best to use climbing plants for this purpose. It is necessary that they have an attractive appearance, exude a good aroma, trail along the walls, creating additional comfort, protection from the sun's rays. Consider the options for the most suitable plants for a summer kitchen:
- Wild grapes;
- Wisteria (wisteria);
- Ampel varieties of strawberries;
- Clematis (clematis);
- Hop;
- Schizandra.
Perennial flowers, shrubs, dwarf trees can be planted around. A characteristic set of vegetation is selected for each style.
