Between applying layers of paint, it is necessary to maintain a pause for the layer to dry completely, otherwise the coating will not be resistant to moisture, wrinkle or bubble.
Wrought iron garden bench
Forged garden benches are made by craftsmen with appropriate training and conditions. Products made in this technique are distinguished by special beauty, style, and create a special look for a garden plot. It is pointless to take on the creation of such structures without skills, but you can order the production of individual parts or elements and assemble them with your own hands on the site.

Corner garden bench
This tutorial will show you how to make a corner garden bench.
The idea was developed to create several seating solutions. The structure should be easy to manufacture with minimal costs, ordinary tools and from old boards. In general, to make it cheap and cheerful. Here's what happened. The boards are taken from disassembled pallets. The connected two benches in the L shape help to give the structure more strength, since one bench itself can be unstable and tend to tilt. If you like the idea, see the step-by-step photos below.
Original garden bench
Based on the principle that there are never too many benches, then this is a good idea for your garden. Don't be intimidated by the quirky shape of this quirky bench, it's as easy to make as a regular bench. Well, maybe it will take a little longer. It took the author of this project about three hours, and that includes the excavation work. And if you have step-by-step instructions, it may take less time. Yes, if you want the design to be flat, find a protractor. In general, you can read all the details on the site, the instructions are small, but specific.

The difference between benches for a summer residence
By material
Purchased benches cost a decent amount, so the owners of summer cottages can make wonderful places to relax in their backyards with their own hands. To do this, first of all, you should decide on the material:
- wooden boards are often used in popular benches and benches, since, due to their standard shape, they can be easily processed, they can be used to make any desired shapes simply and without much difficulty;
- wooden bars and logs are used in the manufacture of benches for a summer residence, which look appropriate in the natural expanses of the country landscape, working with them requires certain skills and the help of a partner due to the impressive weight;
- metal welded and forged elements are used ready-made, purchased in a store or workshop, but very often craftsmen make them on their own according to their own sketch and project;
- combined, having one material at the base, most often, metal, and the seat and back are made of a warmer material - plastic, wood, stone, etc.
By operational purpose
Garden benches for summer cottages are classified according to different characteristics. For example, according to the method of installation, they are stationary and portable. In the first version of the construction, they are massive, stable, often their legs are buried in the base on which the bench stands. The second option speaks of a lightweight design that allows one or two people to move the bench to another location.
By the way the benches are used, they can be divided into types:
- front benches are made of expensive materials, forged elements, natural expensive wood, stone, located not far from the entrance to the house, intended not only for relaxation, but also for creating a characteristic style of a summer cottage;
- lunch benches are made in a general style with a table, a simpler version, usually made of wood and placed under awnings, next to a fireplace or barbecue;
- survey water benches for summer cottages, located in areas near water, a lake, in high areas, steep slopes, are made of wood treated with special compounds for use in humid climates and difficult conditions;
- seasonal and temporary type, which are used only in the warm season and put away for storage after the onset of the cold season.
- romantic and relaxation benches are placed in the most picturesque natural areas, secluded corners, made of wood in the appropriate carved style or with the addition of metallic refined additions.
By form
Garden benches can be of various shapes that suit their purpose:
- open benches - benches that are made without backs, are intended for short-term rest during the period of work in the garden in the country, they are usually placed in the garden, can be used as a dining option under a canopy;
- the space of a large courtyard can be decorated with comfortable benches with a pergola, which protect the sitting person from wind and precipitation;
- a resting place near the barbecue can be equipped with a bench made of a log, which is laid on supports made of brick or metal;
- secluded spots of the garden can be arranged for relaxation by installing a bench in the form of a seat with a back, which rest on flower beds made of durable material, thus, a combination of a resting place and a relaxation corner occurs.
A bench with a pergola has a back, sometimes protective original sides, and a canopy made of light material is attached at the top. By design, they let various climbing plants, grapes, liana or a climbing rose.
Wood and concrete benches
This is another very interesting combination of materials. The concrete looks massive and is very durable. And wood makes the finished product more graceful and beautiful.
There are many options for how to make a dacha bench with your own hands from concrete and wood. On our site you will find only the best ideas and simple solutions.
For example, timber and concrete can be used to make an original shop. We make the base of the bench from concrete. And we are already laying the prepared timber on it. Everything seems to be simple, but it looks very cool.
True, you have to tinker a little with the manufacture of the formwork. Details about all stages of work can be found on the website.
But there is also an easier option. You just need to make the legs out of concrete (you can make them of any shape). And then on top of the base of the bench we lay the sawn-off wooden blocks.
The fixing of the bars is quite simple: when pouring the legs, it is necessary to install the fixing bolts in the concrete solution. We drill holes in the bars, and then put them on the bolts and fix them with nuts. Read more in the article on the website.
DIY making
To make a do-it-yourself bench from metal, you do not need to have practical skills in construction, furniture assembly. Adequate knowledge of the use of hand and power tools. There are several ways to manufacture metal structures.
Material and tools
Before starting production, you need to prepare:
- metal corners, shaped pipes, forged elements;
- welding machine;
- grinder with discs for metal;
- metal brush;
- brushes, roller, primer, special paint.
If the seat will be sheathed with wood, you will need planks, a hacksaw or miter saw, a drill, bolts or screws.

Preparation and drawing up of the drawing
Before assembling the structure, you need to draw up a diagram. It should indicate the dimensions, the view of the finished structure from different sides. When calculating the dimensions, it is necessary to take into account:
- the minimum backrest height is 30 cm;
- the minimum width of the bench is 30 cm;
- length of the structure - 60 cm must be allocated for one person;
- bench height - about 45 cm.
Wrought iron benches
To make a forged bench, you can buy ready-made parts or make them yourself. If the second option is chosen, there are two types of forging that can be used:
- Cold forging. Implies the performance of work on manual machines. In order not to spend money on buying equipment, you can assemble it yourself.
- Hot forging. It needs a forge, an anvil. The workpieces are heated to the maximum temperature and processed with hand tools.
After preparing the parts, you can start assembling:
- Weld the sidewalls through the longitudinal guides.
- Weld up the backrest frame.
- Weld individual forged parts to the finished structure.
When the rough work is completed, you need to clean the welds, cover them with an anti-corrosion compound.

Bench from a profiled tube
This material is easy to work with. You need to prepare the required number of tubes. It is better to choose structures of a square or rectangular section with a wall thickness of 3 mm. Assembly steps:
- Cut the tubes with a grinder.
- Deburr the ends.
- Weld parts.
- After making the frame, cut the lumber to size for the seat.
- Grind the boards with a sander.
- Bolt the boards over the frame.
It remains to cover the wood with two layers of varnish or special paint.
Bench from the corners
The easiest way to make a garden bench. Assembly:
- Mark the corners, cut with a grinder.
- Clean the ends with a file.
- Lay out the parts on the table in the form of a finished structure.
- Cook the corners.
- Cut the planks for the seat with a hacksaw or miter saw.
- Sand wood surfaces.
- Bolt the boards to the metal frame.
Protect wood from moisture, temperature extremes with varnish or special paint.

Scrap metal shop
To make your fantasies come true, you do not need to buy sheet metal, corners, profiles, pipes. It is enough to sort out the contents of the garage, basement, shed and select scrap metal. Any designs can be made from it.
Assembling a bench without a back
This is the simplest design option. From corners or profiled pipes, you need to assemble a U-shaped metal structure and sheathe it with boards in the sitting area.
How to make a bench with a back
It is more comfortable to sit on a bench with a backrest. You can assemble it from shaped pipes, corners, forged elements:
- Prepare a template according to which the sidewalls will be assembled.
- Assemble the sidewalls from corners or shaped pipes. Check the angle on the details.
- Connect the sidewalls with horizontal guides in the area of the backrest, seat.
- Fasten the boards on top of the guides.
- Treat joints, paint wooden surfaces.

Bench for giving out of broken chairs
If there are two old chairs and there was not enough imagination to adapt them somewhere, then you can make a bench out of them. Only the same and strong enough will go. If they are loosened, they will have to be repaired. The chairs are disassembled so that the backs and legs remain. After that, two chairs, or rather what is left of them, are installed side by side and connect their backs using slats of appropriate thickness.
Bench made of old chairs
To make the structure rigid, at a height of 20 cm from the floor, the structure is connected with the same slats along the entire perimeter. Subsequently, these slats will serve as a footrest, and if the bottom is sewn up, for example, with plywood, then you can store some things here.
We paint the made structure
After the structure has been reinforced and sanded, it can be painted over. In this case, ordinary paint is suitable, which can hide some flaws in the entire structure, and especially in old chairs. It remains only to cut out a sheet of plywood, lay foam rubber on it and cover it with some kind of fabric. At the same time, one should take into account the fact that the bench will mainly stand on the street until the very cold weather. Therefore, it is better to opt for, for example, leatherette. In any case, the material must be moisture resistant.

Useful Tips
To make a do-it-yourself bench from wood, drawings, as well as materials and tools should be prepared in advance. If a plywood or board structure is planned, the surface is carefully inspected for flaws. The percentage of losses when cutting elements is necessarily taken into account.
Specialists always start cutting out parts from the longest boards.All corners are rounded to reduce the risk of injury. The back of a wooden bench should not be made of a solid canvas, since it will dry for a very long time after rains. Separate planks nailed parallel to each other are optimal.
The standard bench height is from 40 to 50 cm. To make the frame more stable, a profile tube is used instead of wood. Prepare the site before installation. The surface must be leveled and dense. Cobblestone or coarse gravel is ideal.
Wooden benches are covered with coloring compounds. When choosing, it is worth considering not only color, but also properties. Resistance to external factors is of great importance.
People who like to go to the dacha, take care of the garden, should not forget that it is not worth installing a bench under the fruit trees. Falling apples and pears will ruin the appearance of the product. All wooden elements are treated with varnish or drying oil to protect against the vagaries of the weather.
Before making a bench from scrap materials, you should get acquainted with the features of such products, design options, and useful recommendations. Garden furniture can be not only comfortable, but also practical, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Useful Tips
Experienced craftsmen use some techniques to speed up the assembly or finishing of finished products. Let's consider some of them:
- The assembly of metal benches on bolts allows, if necessary, to disassemble the structure and reuse the resulting material. At the same time, the nuts must be reliably protected from rust so that they do not have to be cut off.
- For ease of finishing, it is recommended to paint the parts prior to assembly. This applies to wooden backs and seats that are attached to a metal frame or other components that do not need to be welded. At a minimum, the first coat is applied, although a full finish can be done.
- When manufacturing heavy parts (concrete castings, massive welded supports for long structures), it is recommended to work as close as possible to the installation site so that you do not have to carry the finished product over a long distance.
A bench for a personal plot on brick supports
Material calculation and tools
To make a bench, we need:
- Building bricks;
- Wooden boards (thickness about 40 mm);
- A pack of self-tapping screws and screws;
- Several bags of cement, fine sieved sand (6 bags or more) and gravel.
Step by step actions
On cobblestone and concrete terrain, the bench must be placed on a cement foundation. On soft ground, it will be necessary to make a columnar foundation.
- We carry out the marking of the territory for the installation of brick racks and remove the top layer of soil (turf). We dig holes with a diameter of 20x20 cm and a depth of about 50-60 cm for the foundation. At the very bottom of the well, we fill in sand 10 cm thick and on top of crushed stone 20 cm thick. We compact all this well, pour a little water and leave it for a day.
- On top we put several pieces of roofing material and place a bunch of five reinforcing rods in the hole. We fill all this with concrete and let it harden for about three or four days. For mixing concrete, we take cement, sand and fine gravel (1: 3: 5).
- We put a small layer of liquid concrete (1–2 centimeters) on the prepared foundation. This will be the basis for the future brick decorative base. Next, we begin to lay the brick with the bandaging. The masonry is made of the width necessary for the construction, that is, such as the bench itself will be or a little narrower.The height of the brickwork should be about 50 cm. Inside the masonry on the top row, we leave space for the formation of a shelf for the subsequent installation of the bench seat.
-
We fasten the seat boards together with the help of a board and self-tapping screws. Then we install the finished bench on the prepared brick supports. We saturate the wood with a fire retardant, let it dry and cover it with a special water-repellent varnish or colored paint.
-
Also, depending on how long the bench will be, it will be necessary to make several brick supports. Corner or curly (semicircular, round, oval) structures are best installed on a solid brick base, which will be located on a tape-type foundation.
Shop decoration
All wooden planks are treated with antifungal agents and fire retardant, and then primed and coated with waterproof varnish or ordinary oil paint. Brickwork does not need additional finishing, as it itself looks quite beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. If you still want to make it a different color, you can also paint it with oil paint.

If you make a bench made of wood and metal with your own hands, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor for many years and relax on it in the shade of fruit trees. With proper and timely care of such a wooden bench with metal or brick supports, it will serve for many years. But so that in winter or autumn it does not suffer from heavy rains or snow, it is best to clean it indoors, if possible. Regular maintenance can significantly extend the life of your backyard shop.
