Colchicum magnificent or colchicum
This herb is perennial and belongs to the lily family. Colchicum magnificent or colchicum is a bulbous plant. The length of its bulb is from 3 to 5 cm. Colchicum has a fibrous root system, and the stem is formed by accrete leaves and reaches a length of about 20-30 cm. This plant has beautiful white-lilac, sometimes purple flowers. The plant is by no means tasted, since it has a high degree of toxicity. The flowering period of the plant is summer and autumn. But the fruits of this plant appear only in the spring of next year.
Kolhikum is distributed throughout the Main Caucasian Range, in the Transcaucasus and in Eastern Georgia. It grows on bows, clearings, park woodlands.
Colchicum splendid is a medicinal plant. It is the onion that is used as a raw material for medicines. The colchicum bulb is odorless, but when cut open, there is an unpleasant, sugary smell. It is harvested at the time of flowering of this plant. The plant is mainly used to obtain the alkaloid colchamine and colchicine. These alkaloids are heterocyclic.
Although colchicum contains various alkaloids, only colchamine is used in modern medical practice. Kolhamin (colhamin ointment) is used in the treatment of stage I and II skin cancer (endophytic and exophytic forms). It is also used to treat cancer of the esophagus and stomach, in cases where surgery is not possible. In such cases, colhamin is used in conjunction with sarcolysin.
