Cherries are not cherries for you

Well, yes, in central Russia there grows an amazingly tasty aromatic cherry, similar to sweet cherry. But a cherry is not a cherry, although it looks like it, it is a completely different berry, or rather, a stone fruit. Without delving into external differences and without tasting either one or the other berry, it is unlikely that an ignorant person in botany will distinguish between images of cherries and cherries. But they are. These berry-fruits differ somewhat in appearance from each other. Cherries are often smaller than sweet cherries. Although there are also quite large varieties of cherries. Then, the cherry itself is more rounded, and the cherry is somewhat "flattened". The rest of the differences between these fruits relate to their botany, growth and taste. So, both cherries and sweet cherries are trees, although there are also shrub cherries, for example, felt cherry. Cherry leaves are medium-sized, have a delicate peculiar aroma, which is used in cooking, in particular in canning. The leaves of the cherry are large, pointed. These relatives taste just as different. Cherries are more aromatic, their sweet taste is diluted with a slight sourness, which makes them surprisingly pleasant. All dishes containing cherries, as well as compote jams, are aromatic, pleasant, tasty. Cherry, on the other hand, has no gustatory characteristics - just sweet pulp, without any special frills. Therefore, it is worth eating it fresh, enjoying summer vitamins. Blanks from one cherry will be tasteless. It is best used as an addition to other berries and fruits in canning. And there is also a big difference between cherries and cherries in the color of the berries. Sweet cherries can be bright yellow to bright red in color. Cherry, on the other hand, most often has a dark red color - cherry.

Heat-loving fussy

Compared to cherries, which are widespread throughout our country, sweet cherries are southerners. She does not tolerate frost. Although breeders are constantly working on breeding winter-hardy varieties of sweet cherries. And there are already such varieties. So now cherries can be grown in colder climatic zones than Crimea, for example. But if the decision to plant cherries in the garden area is still made and a suitable zoned variety is chosen, then the place should be warm enough early - sunny and sheltered from cold winds. In addition, cherries love the sun, and the south side of the building, by the way, in this case, it turns out to be windy, or a gentle slope would be ideal for planting this tree. Sweet cherries are demanding on the soil. It will not take root or develop well enough on heavy, clayey, waterlogged soils. She needs a nutritious, light, airy earth. Sweet cherry also loves water, but not standing. Therefore, the tree will have to be watered regularly, making sure that the planting site is well drained before planting. When planting cherry seedlings, several conditions must be observed.

It is necessary, it is possible and it is impossible

  • cherries are planted in early spring, even before the buds wake up
  • a pit for planting is prepared in the fall, introducing humus into it.In the spring, they complete the preparation by adding a little (!) Fertilizer and sand to the planting pit. Cherry does not need a huge amount of fertilizer, otherwise it will actively start up lateral shoots that will not have time to get stronger and will simply freeze at the first frost, taking away the strength from the tree
  • when planting a cherry tree sapling, in no case should you bury the root collar - the tree will simply die from such disrespect
  • you cannot feed the tree for the winter!
  • in winter, only phosphate fertilizers can be applied to the soil, which will help him prepare for an unloved winter
  • the distance between several cherries must be at least 3 meters
  • it is absolutely impossible to cut off the branches of the cherry after the buds have swollen!
  • for the winter, the trunk of the sweet cherry must be protected from rodents and frost. To do this, use the autumn whitewashing of the trunk and strapping with spruce branches.

Caution - Birds!

But not only we, people, love sweet cherries. Remember the second name of sweet cherry - bird cherry - everything becomes clear. The most important sweet cherry sweets are birds. Therefore, for every gardener, the problem is not only how to get a sweet cherry crop, but also how to preserve it. What people did not invent to drive away the feathered sweet tooth from juicy cherries, but in vain. Birds are not afraid of scarecrows, colorful flags and toy cats hanging near the trees. Today, the best way to preserve the cherry crop is to stretch a thin but strong net over the trees. No other solution has yet been invented.

Good luck!

I love cherries! I cannot express in words how sorry I am that it is not growing with us. You have to be content with a purchased berry, and, unfortunately, you cannot compare it with the cherry that is plucked from the branches in your garden.

Well, yes, I agree. For some reason, everything grown on a private plot is much tastier than bought from a large manufacturer.

Cherry grows in my yard. The tree is unpretentious, but it really loves a warm place and water. Many branches dry up during the winter, and in general bears fruit for 12 years. The whole family is very fond of sweet cherries, we close the fragrant compote for the winter.

Indeed, blanks from one sweet cherry turn out to be poor in taste, but the compote mix of strawberries and cherries is very tasty. This is what I preserve. It is healthier than purchased juices.
