Crocuses - varieties and cultivation

Crocuses are gentle harbingers of spring, they bloom touchingly on the soil, still bare after winter, amaze us with their endurance and unassuming beauty.

Crocuses, varieties and species of which reach a huge number, are not deservedly deprived of our attention, perhaps due to the fact that many summer residents do not even have time to see their flowering in their garden, since the summer cottage season is often opened at the end of the flowering of these simple ones, but very lovely colors. However, this is a far from erroneous opinion, if you choose the right varieties of crocuses, then their flowering will delight for about six weeks, and crocuses bloom from mid-March.

Bright spots of crocus or blue or yellow carpets will bring spring mood to your site much earlier than your neighbors, where there are no crocuses.

Crocuses: varieties, the most common, and cultivation

Crocus is an easy-to-grow bulbous plant, having planted several bulbs once, they will constantly delight you with their flowering and will increase their population.

Crocuses will favorably emphasize the paths or create bright pillows on the site, since they often do not exceed ten centimeters in height.

Crocuses are unpretentious and do not require care, they grow everywhere, and even with their love of light, they bloom beautifully in the shade. Crocus bulbs should be planted to a depth of five centimeters or three heights of the bulb itself. Between the plants, you need to keep at least three centimeters of free soil, you can periodically feed it with mineral fertilizers, applying them to the snow that has not yet melted and just before flowering.

The most common type of crocus in our country is spring. It blooms with white or purple flowers, surrounded by thin long leaves. It is on the basis of this species that many varieties of crocuses have been bred, which are gaining popularity among summer residents and gardeners.

And the first place is occupied by Dutch hybrids. They are completely unpretentious, reproduce well, bloom for about two weeks, and have in their arsenal crocuses blooming with white flowers, striped and netted flowers, flowers with lilac, lilac and purple colors.

Among them:

  • Baron von Braun, blooming with dark lilac flowers, with white stripes outside and inside;
  • Vanguard, blooming with light, delicate lilac or bluish flowers, with a soft silvery sheen;
  • Joan of Arc, blooming with white flowers with a lilac base;
  • Queen of the blue, blooming gently with doves flowers.

Also very popular are crocuses that bloom with cream and yellow flowers, which have a slightly smaller flower size than that of Dutch hybrids, but each plant gives many flowers, and the flowers have an original shape, they open almost completely.
