Types of BOPP films
Often on sale you can find 5 types of these products. Films are produced with different parameters of thickness (20-40 microns) and width (10-1500 mm). Its sale is usually carried out within a predetermined length.
- BOPP transparent film consists of 3 layers: 2 of them are heat-sealable, and the central one, polypropylene, carries the main load. It is often found in bulk food packaging, as it has excellent transparency and is also complemented by anti-reflective components. The material does not accumulate static charge and glides perfectly. In addition, it is officially approved for food packaging - from ice cream to hot products.
- The mother-of-pearl BOPP film differs from the previous type by the presence of an OOP layer with a microporous structure, which gives the film a “pearl” tint. It is used where protection from direct sunlight is needed, and also, due to its resistance to low temperatures, in the packaging of frozen foods. Like the previous one, it is protected from static charge, glare, glides well and is excellent for printing.
- Metallized BOPP film - the main difference of this material is the increased barrier properties, which are provided by sputtering from aluminum. This coating will be in close contact with the crowned layer, due to the initially high adhesion, and will perfectly tolerate not only printing, but also heat sealing, without losing its reflective properties. Excellent protection against odors, suitable for packaging fish and meat.
- Shrink biaxially oriented has a high ability to shrink at relatively low temperatures. Due to this feature, it is often used for packaging cigarettes, therefore it is sometimes called "tobacco". The properties are closest to the first type.
- General purpose BOPP film is the basis for making adhesive tape, as well as packaging products, labels, tapes, etc. Unlike previous types, it cannot be used for heat sealing, since it is made without appropriate layers.
There are other types, for example, BOPP film with polyethylene lamination (packaging of large weight or packaging of products with high fat content), or perforated.
Methods for the production of polymer films
In the industrial production of film polymer material, two main methods of plastics processing are used, the choice of which depends on the areas of application of the product obtained and on the polymers used:
- Extrusion. It is used in most cases.
- Calendering. Also includes polymer pre-extrusion.
Extrusion is one of the most common technologies for the production of plastic products. The extrusion process in its simplest form is the extrusion of a molten polymer mass through a special forming tool (extrusion head). From the point of view of the production of films, the forming head must be slotted or annular, that is, suitable for shaping a thin polymer strip of a finite width or a film sleeve. The extrusion method is indispensable for the production of multilayer polymer films. In this case, several extruders, loaded with different types of raw materials, work in one die of complex design, which usually forms an odd (from 3 to 11) number of layers with different properties.
The main types of extruders are:
- single-screw (single-screw);
- multi-worm (multi-screw);
- disk;
- piston.
In modern industrial production, in the overwhelming majority of cases, single-screw extruders are used.Twin screw machines, due to their special powder processing properties, are often only used for PVC production.
Fig. 1. Extruder with co-extrusion
The calendering method is used much less frequently than extrusion. It is less productive, but is able to give a polymer film with more accurate dimensional characteristics, as well as apply the desired texture. The main type of equipment used is a calender consisting of 3-6 thermostatically controlled rolls. The film web is formed in the gaps between the rotating rolls of the calender.
The calendering technology is used mainly for the manufacture of film products from polyvinyl chloride compositions. The PVC composition is prepared in special mixers for powdered materials and fed to preliminary homogenization on rollers or in an extruder. Then the resulting melt of the polymer composition enters the gap between the first and second calender rolls and moves further, assuming the desired shape and texture.

Storing BOPP films
BOPP film must be stored in a suitable environment. The first requirement is dryness and lack of constant contact with direct sunlight (even those species that are least affected by the sun are negatively affected, especially if the light falls over a long time). The required storage temperature is not more than 30 degrees Celsius (a large one will accelerate the decrease in the level of corona treatment), in addition, it is necessary to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 meters from the heaters. Storage without heating is allowed, but to return to performance, the film must be kept for two days at room temperature. As you can see, even such a successful invention of the chemical industry as BOPP film has many varieties that allow you to achieve the desired characteristics at a minimum price. In addition, the largest manufacturers still recognize this material as promising, so new modifications may appear on the market soon.
Polypropylene film
Distinguish between polypropylene film by manufacturing methods, with and without heat-sealable layers, by color scale and structure, white-pearl (pearl), white matte polypropylene film, metallized, etc.
Metallized polypropylene film
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS:
- Excellent metallic luster
- The outer surface of the film is metallized, the inner one has a pearlescent white color.
APPLICATION:
Metallized polypropylene film
used for wrapping large sweets and chocolate bars, muffins, waffles, snack products (chips, crackers, salted nuts). Thanks to the aluminum metallization, these films have an increased barrier to oxygen and water vapor, as well as more efficiently trap light. In such packaging, the number of harmful microorganisms decreases, and, consequently, the shelf life of products increases.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene film (abbreviated as BOPP or, in Latin, BOPP) is ideal for flexible packaging. The same type of material can also be called biaxially oriented polypropylene. Stretching in two axes guarantees not only lightness, but also excellent strength of the product. The oriented material is called OPP for short. The variant without orientation is usually called CPP, it is also called "caste".
Simple type PP is significantly superior to other polymers used for packaging. It is stronger than polyvinyl chloride or HDPE grade polyethylene. Also, this transparent material looks quite aesthetically pleasing. On top of it, you can print texts and images. Lamination and application of a metal layer is quite allowed; relatively inexpensive product is suitable for:
- storage of various types of food;
- packaging of printed publications and stationery;
- use as a container for textiles, flowers, medical packaging.
And yet, the biaxially stretched propylene film has undeniably much better characteristics. Among the commercially available films, only PET has comparable stiffness and strength. Therefore, such a product is acceptable for use on high-speed packaging lines. The characteristic feature is the gloss of the surface.
Polypropylene will be able to withstand cooling down to -50 and heating up to +100 degrees. Therefore, you can safely use it for packaging products that are subject to powerful freezing. The barrier properties of the film are quite high. It effectively inhibits oxygen and carbon dioxide. The material is immune to UV radiation and contact with water. Comparison of BOPP with other materials shows that this film transmits:
- 3 times less than the usual polyethylene;
- 5 times less than polyethylene terephthalate;
- 6 times less than polyvinyl chloride.
She completely lacks her own smell. It is widely used for flexo printing. Cutting and welding the material is technically extremely simple. BOPP also has a clearly adjustable shrinkage. You can set the exact level of adherence to the packaged items.
The thickness can vary from 12 to 40 microns. The permissible width is from 1 to 150 cm. For printing purposes, self-adhesive film is widely used. The frost resistance of this option is at least not worse than that of other solutions. Adhesion allows the coating to be used with confidence on both smooth and rough substrates. The material is quite suitable for automatic labeling lines; there are solutions with white and metallic base colors.
This product is subject to strict GOST R 58061 - 2018. The standard establishes the following types of film winding:
- canvas;
- half sleeve;
- regular sleeve;
- folded or double-folded sleeve type.
Basic standardized parameters:
- elongation at break;
- strength of welded seams;
- turbidity of the transparent part (in percentage with respect to the luminous flux);
- static and dynamic coefficients of friction force;
- activation of the surface on the treated sides;
- oxygen permeability;
- permeability to water vapor;
- thermal shrinkage level;
- density.

BOPP types
BOPP is produced with a thickness of 12-40 microns (microns), the width ranges from 10 to 1500 mm.
Products packed in BOPP film
According to its intended purpose, bopp polypropylene film is:
- Transparent single-layer (monofilm) - without a heat-sealable layer, it is also called floral. It is used as packaging for flowers, gift wrapping, for lamination, for photo albums, packaging of manufactured goods. It is also used as a base for tapes and scotch tapes. There is no heat-sealable layer in the monofilm, so it cannot be welded;
- Transparent three-layer BOPP (co-extrusion) - consists of one central polypropylene layer that carries the main load, and two heat-sealable ones. The material glides and welds well, has high transparency, and is suitable for manufacturers who want to show the appearance of their products and stand out from competitors. It is used for packing bakery products, stationery, bulk, confectionery, textiles, perfumes and cosmetics, label bases.
- BOPP pearl film (pearlescent, white) - consists of three layers, one of which has a microporous structure, which gives it a "pearl" color. The mother-of-pearl layer provides protection from the sun's rays. Pearl BOPP is used to pack ice cream, curd cheeses, confectionery (chocolate, crackers, waffles), for labels on plastic bottles, etc.
- Metallized BOPP film - combines the same layers as transparent three-layer. One of them is covered with aluminum spraying. Thanks to this, metallized polypropylene creates a good barrier to oxygen, water vapor, light, and also to microorganisms. Metallized packaging extends the shelf life of products, does not allow fats to penetrate outside. The material is used to pack products that quickly oxidize: coffee, tea, snacks, ice cream, sweets, etc.
- Shrink bopp (tobacco) - mainly used for packaging cigarettes (usually 15 microns are used), which is why it has that name. The film has three layers - one main and two heat-sealable. When exposed to temperature, the tobacco bopp film shrinks over the product. It is also used for packaging CDs, tea boxes;
- Perforated BOPP - films with holes of minimum diameter (0.3-1.2 mm) by means of “hot perforation”. This method allows you to maintain the strength and aesthetic appeal of the material. Perforated material allows air to pass through and the product "breathes". The packaging is relevant for fruits, vegetables, herbs, meat and fish products.
With the development of the market, new types of bopps appear that adapt to the needs of consumers. There are trends to create thinner materials while maintaining the original strength, as well as to expand their range.
Material production
Manufacturing methods for each type of material have their own characteristics. So, BOOP film (biaxially oriented) is produced by the method of flat-slit extrusion. The technology involves the distribution of hot melt evenly over the surface of a rotating drum, which is placed in a bath of cold water for cooling. The film is formed in the casting device. At the initial stage, it turns out to be quite thick, but then it is stretched horizontally due to rolling with hot rollers, and in the transverse direction - due to the capture of the edges with special klups.After that, the film web is cooled, the edge is cut, the thickness and other parameters are checked for compliance with the requirements. For this, the film is X-rayed, a corona discharge is applied to the edge, which affects the surface of the film.
In order for the polypropylene film to acquire the required properties, special additives are added to the melt. With their help, it is possible to reduce the coefficient of friction of the material, increase its transparency, and achieve an antistatic effect.
Films used for vapor barrier are made using membrane technology. To create such a material, the film is first irradiated with heavy charged particles, then treated with organic solvents, dried and heat treated. As a result, the production rate of semi-permeable membranes is significantly increased.
Various technologies and methods for the manufacture of polymeric materials make it possible to impart various properties to them. Depending on the purpose of using the polypropylene film, you can select the required variety.
What it is?
The most important features of the polypropylene film are its excellent tightness and impermeability to water. Also, with its help, the safety of food products, other goods and materials is ensured. The polypropylene casing is used in the construction and repair industry. It reliably suppresses extraneous noise. The production methods depend on the specific type of material.
Along with varying processing methods and basic components, the required properties are imparted with the help of special additives. Most often, the material is obtained by the so-called extrusion method. Special processing and sophisticated technology ensure excellent packaging properties. The composition of polypropylene contains only carbon and hydrogen, which ensures maximum safety of this material.
Types of shrink films
Today, shrink wrap can be made from three materials:
- high pressure polyethylene (LDPE);
- polyvinyl chloride (PVC);
- polyolefin (POF).
LDPE has a thickness of one layer, but has the largest choice of density. This provides an opportunity to choose the right film for certain conditions with specific indicators. Such a film has an economical price and well protects products from any negative factors. Large-sized items packed in LDPE film are perfectly transported and reach the place in complete safety.
PVC shrink film provides a bright appearance to the product. Such a film has increased shrinkage, which makes it easy to pack at low temperatures. This type is the most economical, as it has the lowest cost among all the alternatives.
POF is considered the most modern material for heat shrinkage today. The POF film is made of a multilayer material - it contains a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene. This gives the film increased resistance to temperature conditions. The range of permissible temperatures is from + 300 to - 300 C.
All shrink wrap has a transparent appearance, but different degrees of transparency are possible. This is directly related to the density of the material. Each type of film is used both manually and on special equipment with an automatic or semi-automatic mode.
Types of films and their properties
Once BOPP was used, it was single-layer, but that was progress. Nowadays, multilayer is becoming more and more popular. Its characteristics are much better than single-layer, because thanks to interlayers made of different materials, it has become much more practical and protects products in many ways.
The polypropylene film must be waterproof, transparent, airtight, temperature resistant and durable. To achieve these characteristics, foil and adhesives are placed between the layers of material. Usually, when in contact, the material sticks together, this property facilitates the packaging process. But there are a huge number of types of multilayer polypropylene film and each has its own characteristics that are convenient for packaging different products.
- Skin film - excellent protection against moisture and dust, used for packaging cardboard and paper
- Co-extruded polyethylene is a three-layer film, resistant to tearing due to puncture or impact, very transparent.
- Biaxially oriented polypropylene film is transparent, elastic, durable. It can be transparent, white, pearlescent, with a metallic sheen.
- Cast film (CPP film) is durable and transparent. Not sensitive to high temperatures.
Each type of material has its own characteristics and unique properties. The scope of their application depends on this. Stronger materials are often used in construction and industry. For example, semi-permeable films are excellent for performing roof vapor barrier in the construction of buildings for various purposes. A special property of such materials is the ability to pass steam and moisture in one direction and not to pass it in the other. Thanks to this, vapors from the room leave the house outside, and moisture from the street does not penetrate into the house, does not spoil the insulation and other building materials.
Polypropylene films provide sound insulation, which allows them to be used in various residential and industrial premises.
Pearl polypropylene film
APPLICATION:
- Recommended for food packaging where high light protection is required
- High quality rotogravure and flexographic printing
- Independent use in decorative packaging (thick films)
- Cold bonding
- Packaging for ice cream, chocolate products
Pearl Polypropylene BOPP (BOPP) Film
obtained by using special additives in the production. The resulting foamed polypropylene microstructure perfectly reflects light. Also, pearl oriented polypropylene has a lower specific gravity, which makes it very economical to use. This polymeric pearl polypropylene film perfectly withstands low temperatures, which is why it is successfully used for packaging ice cream, glazed curds and other products that require storage at low temperatures.
Appointment
BOPP film can be transparent, made in one layer. This monofilm does not have a thermally welded part. It is sometimes called flower packaging. Besides indoor flowers, this solution is great for gift wrapping and lamination. It is convenient to pack various manufactured goods in BOPP monofilm; it is also used for photo albums. This product can also be a good "base" for tape and scotch tape. However, the lack of welding is definitely a major drawback. A more attractive solution in this respect is the co-extrusion modification with two thermally welded layers.
Therefore, such a modification is recommended for manufacturers seeking to demonstrate the appearance of their product and show it favorably among the mass of competitors. This solution will do:
- for confectionery;
- bulk products;
- stationery;
- textile products;
- perfumery products;
- cosmetics.
The pearl type of film has a pearlescent or white color. It is a three-layer conglomerate, one of the layers of which has microscopic pores. It is this layer that forms the "pearl" color. The film of this category is placed:
- ice cream;
- curd snacks;
- confectionery products;
- labels.
Roll film can be used for printing a variety of texts and images. Pictures are formed using the flexography technique. This solution ensures the colorfulness and uniqueness of the created plot. Easy to get crisp, high-quality prints. Separately, it is worth mentioning the metallized film; it differs from a transparent three-layer sample by the use of aluminum spraying. "Winged metal" guarantees a decent barrier properties in relation to oxygen, water vapor. It perfectly restrains light and is not susceptible to the formation of bacterial colonies.
The metallized type of packaging will extend the shelf life of food and slow down the spread of fat. Shrink wrap is sometimes called "tobacco", because it is most often used to place cigarettes. Also this type of material is used for CDs and tea. Perforated BOPP films have relatively small openings (0.3-1.2 mm). These holes are made using "hot perforation". It guarantees the strength and aesthetic appeal of the product.

The concept of film and how to use it
Polymer film - flexible and elastic thin-walled material from one or more polymers. Almost all basic polymers have the ability to form film, but the most popular materials are based on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and some other polymers. A wide variety of types of polymer films are used, not only by the type of raw material, but also by the number of layers, thickness, gas permeability or barrier properties, mechanical characteristics and areas of application.
Films are popular primarily because of their low raw material capacity with high characteristics, which makes the use of films highly economically attractive in various fields. Greenhouse agriculture is a classic example of the use of this material. Another major area of use is the huge and ever-growing plastic packaging sector. In addition, polymer films are used in construction, households, as components of various products, such as furniture or electronics, for laminating cardboard and other materials, in composites and in many other fields.
