Types of lining
Initially, this material was used to decorate the walls of carriages (hence the name). However, for quite a long time, lining has been used to decorate walls inside houses. Its advantages are widely known - environmental friendliness, aesthetics, affordability, ease of installation.
Manufacturers offer the following types of lining:
- In the "quarter". This type does not have a tongue-and-groove fastening system, but has protrusions in the side parts. It allows you to overlap the boards, which creates a rather interesting effect.
- With tongue and groove. Such lining is usually used for finishing a vertically located surface. It resembles an ordinary grooved board, but smaller. Office premises, reception areas - the scope of this type of lining.
- "Calm", "Peasant", "Russian", "Prostaya" are the most popular types of lining. Equipped with a tongue-and-groove locking system, an expansion groove and a flat, perfectly smooth surface.
- The double-sided type has a classic connection system presented on both sides.
- Euro lining. It resembles an edged board. A characteristic feature of this type is a high quality finish on each side. The elements are interconnected according to the groove-thorn principle. Eurolining is made most often from coniferous trees. The increased junction of this type (up to 8 millimeters) allows you to create a coating without visible seams. In addition, on the rear side of the profile there is a special recess that serves as an air outlet. This prevents condensation, mold and mildew from appearing on the panels.
- "American". It has the shape of an irregular rectangle. A groove is laid along the widest part of it, which makes it possible to create an interesting decorative effect - the boards seem to be overlapped.
- Block house. This type creates a covering that imitates a building from a rounded log. During installation, a crate is used. Creates a heat and sound insulating surface that is not prone to splitting or cracking.
- Finca. This species has an oval or rounded shape.
Each of these types of lining is good in its own way, each is popular. But even the most beautiful coating can get bored and cause a desire, if not to change it, then at least to renew it. For this, various coloring compositions, varnishes, impregnations and so on are used. Wooden lining is often coated with such substances to prolong its service life, to emphasize or, on the contrary, to hide the structure of natural wood.
Which varnish to choose
As noted earlier, before installation, the entire surface of the new lining must be treated with a primer, antiseptic and dried for at least 2 days. After that, the boards are mounted and varnished or painted. Since the lining has a beautiful appearance, it is better not to radically change the color of the finishing material. You can simply varnish the wood and it will shine, creating an atmosphere of warmth and lightness.
It should be noted that painting the lining inside the house is carried out using the following types of varnish:
- alkyd;
- acrylate;
- water based;
- polyurethane.
With the help of varnishes, you can get a glossy or silky surface without shine. In addition, varnishes may contain coloring pigments. The varnishes are diluted with appropriate solvents (water, white spirit, xylene, ether, alcohol, etc.).
Alkyd varnishes and varnishes based on polyurethane are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as they have good protective properties.
Acrylate varnishes are used for interior work. They retain the natural color of the wood and protect it from the sun's rays. Alkyd varnishes are moisture resistant. They make the wood resistant to chips and cracks. The main disadvantage of alkyd varnishes is a pungent odor and a long drying time.
When applying polyurethane varnishes, a coating is created that is resistant to moisture, ultraviolet rays, and chemicals. A significant drawback is the high price.
Painting new wooden lining
On what basis is it best to choose varnishes for lining? For painting the lining water-based varnishes work best. Such materials are environmentally friendly, odorless and dry quickly. However, water-based varnishes are best used only for interior work. Their main advantage is ease of use, harmlessness and reasonable cost.
To varnish a new lining inside the house, after applying a primer, antiseptic composition, drying and installation, paint the lining with the selected varnish using a sprayer or brush in 3-4 layers. The next layer of varnish should be applied correctly only after the previous one has completely dried.
In addition to varnishes, for painting lining indoors, you can use the following types of paints for woodwork:
- water-based;
- pentaphthalic enamels;
- enamels on chlorosulfonated polyethylene;
- urethane-alkyd enamels.
Water-based lining paint (water-based) can create matte and semi-matte coatings. These paints are used for interior work and are not washed off with water. However, they should not be used in rooms with high humidity. For rooms with high humidity, it is better to treat the lining with organosilicate materials that create a shiny smooth surface.
As for various kinds of enamels, they, as a rule, contain coloring pigments, change the natural color of the wood and are suitable for repainting the lining. Enamel paint for lining is resistant to water and detergents.
In addition to traditional varnishes and paints, you can also paint wood with natural dyes - stains, stains, and wax-based paints.
Which varnish or paint to choose for coloring? The choice depends on the operating conditions of the material and the requirements for the paintwork. Correctly chosen paint material is a guarantee of durability and aesthetic appearance of wood paneling.
Stylish solutions
In order for the interior with the use of painted lining to look interesting not only in color, but also in style, it is worth showing a little imagination and not being afraid of experiments. In the event that you decide to use panels of different thicknesses, this will create an unusual wall texture. Wide panels are mounted on the wall in such a way that there is room between them for narrower ones. At the same time, you can alternate the panels as you like. It can be two wide panels, and then one narrow. It is best to cover such a wall with paint of the same color, but in different shades. This contrast between the panels will help create an unusual effect.

In addition, sheathing the walls with clapboard of the same style, you can give them an accent using different colors. For example, if we are talking about a bedroom, then the area near the lamps and sconces, which, as a rule, are located at the head of the bed, can be painted with lighter paint.
Such a non-standard solution will visually not only expand the space, but also focus on other items, accessories, distracting it from the sleeping place
If the ceiling in the room is lined with clapboard, then you can use massive beams as an addition. It is recommended to paint the ceiling in lighter colors, and beams in darker ones. This color contrast will allow any room to look original and very modern.As for the color combination, it can be white and brown, creamy beige and black.
Try to choose not too bright and not too dark colors for the nursery. Ideally, these are soft green, blue, light yellow or beige. The original painting on such a background will look great. By the way, the finishing stage in the completion of such work should be the coating of the lining with colorless varnish or oil. This will help the drawing last longer.
In order to create not just an interesting interior, but also an unusual texture of the walls, you can use non-classic lining. Prefer uneven planks and panels that have grooves, depressions, or even waves. As a rule, they are inherent in eurolining. Thanks to this material, it will be possible to create an unusual design.
And the relief of the walls can be emphasized by painting using two colors. This option is perfect for a living room. In general, a wide variety of styles can be used for the living room. For example, you can paint the panels in a classic white color, and then age them a little, which will give the room an unusual and cozy look. In the event that the lining is covered with light-colored paint, then be sure to choose dark-colored furniture.
This solution will allow you to achieve a visual expansion of the space. For the kitchen and dining room, you need to choose light shades. For example, it can be blue, pistachio, light green or beige. By the way, walls of blue or pistachio color are in perfect harmony with white kitchen furniture.
The advantage of the dyed version
Many people prefer the lining, painted in an industrial environment. What is its advantage:
- No streaks and streaks;
- High quality painting;
- High degree of protection against the harmful effects of external factors;
- Saving time on preparatory work;
- Quick installation;
- Better drying of wood before installation than at home.
In an industrial setting, this action takes 1 to 3 months. For grinding, specialized machines and devices are used.
At home, it is simply impossible to perfectly prepare the surface. Sometimes this occurs due to lack of space or time constraints.
Primer, impregnation and, directly, paint and varnish products are applied to the wall under high pressure. Thanks to this technology, there are no streaks and streaks on the industrial lining.
Special impregnation compounds are used, which make the wood less susceptible to harmful outdoor factors such as direct sunlight and ultraviolet radiation.
The material used for the exterior is covered with a layer of water-repellent coating. You can be sure that the finish will last a long time without losing its original color and without starting to rot or become covered with mold and mildew.
Another important point is the speed of installation. Sometimes work is carried out in the autumn. It is not possible to dry out and not expose the wall to external influences.
Then the already painted panel comes to the rescue. This product is ready for installation. There is no need to carry out additional measures for its preparation and coloring. Thanks to this, we save not only time, but also money.
Advantages and disadvantages of painting lining
Painting the lining with enamel, colorless varnish can extend the life of the material. If the board is used for wall cladding, work surfaces in the utility room, you can do with the usual impregnation. In a house or apartment, it is better to paint the wood paneling with high-quality paint for practical and decorative purposes. After all, replacing a damaged top layer of wood is much more expensive than a few cans of enamel. You can buy a ready-made painted board or paint it yourself. Do-it-yourself coating of panels has many advantages:
- The ability to color elements with different colors, apply your own pattern, texture;
- Cost savings. Processed lining is much more expensive;
- The ability to choose the most incredible shade;
- Increased resistance to negative external factors;
- Fast drying.
There are practically no drawbacks to painting the lining. The main negative point is the loss of the natural pattern and type of wood. You can avoid some negative consequences if you take into account the purpose of the room when choosing a paint and varnish material. Oil impregnation and drying oil are not suitable for baths and saunas. It is better to use solid mixtures with added wax. In closed, unventilated rooms, it is not recommended to use flammable, toxic enamels for painting wooden boards. Painting the floors from the lining should be carried out taking into account the abrasion of the material. In order not to have to repaint often, you should choose a mixture with high wear resistance.
Why do you need painting?
Despite its advantages, wood has disadvantages that can spoil the attractiveness of the cladding, lead to damage to the material. The most dangerous property is flammability. If untreated boards come into contact with an ignition source, highly heated fireplaces or other direct effects of fire, they will quickly catch fire. They will be difficult to extinguish, so treatment with fire retardants is necessary.
Another factor of vulnerability is susceptibility to infection by fungi and other pathogenic microorganisms that lead to rotting and discoloration. To prevent this in rooms with high humidity or in direct contact with water, you need to cover the material with a protective waterproof agent or antiseptic.
The porous structure of the fibers easily absorbs dirt, which is clearly visible if they differ in color from wood by several colors or tones (how to clean the dirt on the lining?). It is impossible to remove stains without destroying the decorative coating, therefore it is required to make the outer layer impervious to liquids and other pollutants.
The wood is relatively soft, which, as a result of mechanical shock or damage, will lead to the appearance of dents. Especially well such places will be noticeable under lighting: they will be with a shadow from the previous even layer, and on the surface of the lamellas they will create the impression of dirt. Paints and varnishes create an extra durable layer that will protect against such problems.
Important
Even though painting the lining is the final stage of finishing, you need to take the process seriously. The decorative effect depends on the choice of paint, the thoroughness of the preparation of the wood surface and the method of applying the protective composition, which is easy to spoil by violating any, even minor rules. resins and oils will ooze for another ten years
Appearance due to this phenomenon can significantly deteriorate.
If coniferous wood canvases are chosen for decoration, then they need to be covered with a special composition, since the resins and oils contained in the fibers will ooze for another ten years. Due to this phenomenon, the appearance can deteriorate significantly.
Why is it necessary to paint the lining and what protective functions it has, says the specialist in this video:
Color palette
The choice of color when painting the lining is determined by the style of the interior, its color scheme, as well as the taste of the owners of the house.
Not everyone likes the light and even surface. Someone will want to bring brightness to the interior, someone, on the contrary, will shade it with dark blotches. Someone will emphasize the structure of natural wood, someone will decide to completely hide it. All this is a matter of taste.
Often white is used when painting the lining. Bleached wood, especially oak, creates a special atmosphere in the house.Light shades visually expand the space, "lift" it, add air and space. Therefore, rooms with a small area are most often decorated in light colors.
In combination with the structure of the wood, the effect is really great. Such a surface will fit into any style, it will blend in with almost any environment and color. A translucent paint that does not hide, but emphasizes the wood texture and gives a white tint to the material itself is a good option to slightly refresh, update the interior without fundamental changes.
You can use acrylic or oil paints to create a bold accent color. They offer a fairly wide selection of shades - from subdued subdued to flashy bright.
Another option for giving color to the lining is the use of colors. They can be added to water-based paint, glaze, and get a variety of shades of any degree of saturation. With proper mixing of several tones, you can get a rather interesting complex shade that fits perfectly into this interior. But in order not to spoil the entire base paint (to which colors will be added), it is better to pour a little into a separate container and try there.
In general, painted lining itself creates an interesting effect in the interior, especially when the structure of the tree remains clearly visible. It is not for nothing that such a solution is more and more often found in very different designs, in different colors and in different styles.
Painting technology
It is recommended to paint each board separately. Only then should the ceiling be installed. Ignoring this approach, it is difficult to achieve the same color, since unpainted places will remain in the grooves, the finished surface will look bad. Technological subtleties must be followed, without which it will not be possible to achieve an excellent result:
The paintwork material is thoroughly mixed with a spatula
When working with varnish, it is important that bubbles do not form, as they persist for a long time and can ruin the surface.
Two brushes are used. Large - for the main area, small - for hard-to-reach areas.
LMB is taken a little, the brush is dipped lightly
Painting is done along the lining, all movements are performed in one direction. To get an even coloring, the brush should not touch the already treated areas, otherwise drips can damage what has been done.
Usually a three-coat application is sufficient. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried, it takes from 4 to 6 hours.
After the first coating, re-grinding is performed, since paintwork materials raise the villi, making the boards rough.
Water-based varnishes are mixed during use every 20 minutes.
The finishing layer is the thinnest, it is better to apply it with a roller.
Designers offer many color options that can transform the interior. Let's consider the most popular techniques.
Into an opaque color
If the texture of the material is poor, it is wiser to use opaque compounds. For this, paints are taken with a good covering effect, hiding minor flaws. A primer is pre-applied, it will allow the paintwork to lie better on the surface, reliably hold the layers together. In addition, priming will save on finishing paint. The color scheme is chosen light, all shades of white look great.
If you want to preserve the veins of the tree and paint the ceiling white, then a composition with the effect of bleached or bleached oak is chosen. Manufacturers offer a large selection of tinting, primers with "talking" names. You can purchase wax, pigmented polyurethane or acrylic primer, or oil. All of them have the words "white", "bleached" in their names.The choice depends on the properties of individual types of wood; the product is selected based on the recommendations indicated on the package.
The work is carried out without haste, the composition is taken a little, otherwise the paint will peel off in the future. 2-3 thin layers are applied, each needs to dry thoroughly for at least 4-6 hours, the exact time depends on the chosen product and is indicated on the package. The result will please - the white lining on the ceiling will perfectly fit into the interior of a wooden house.
With preservation of wood texture
If it is necessary to preserve and emphasize the beautiful pattern of the boards, brushing (texturing) with wax, glaze or pigmented oils is applied. The work is done with a brush or roller. Strokes are made at approximately equal distances, then shaded evenly. Leave to absorb for 10 minutes. Then excess oil is removed with a soft, lint-free cloth. The drawing becomes vivid. To consolidate the effect, the product is covered with two more layers of wax or azure.
You can preserve the wood texture by using varnish. The surface is prepared especially carefully:
processed with sandpaper;
additionally sanded with a grinding (abrasive) sponge;
the smallest specks of dust are removed with a brush - this is important!
The first layer is covered with water-based parquet or furniture varnish, which is diluted with white spirit by 50%. The liquid substance spreads without leaving brush marks. Drying lasts a day. Again, an abrasive sponge is taken, grinding is carried out with the lightest pressure. For the next layer, add 25% white spirit. It dries for two days. The result is evaluated, if not satisfied, a third layer is applied, already undiluted. It takes 3 days to dry.
Decorative staining techniques
For lovers of something unusual, designers offer original ways to decorate. The product is painted in two different colors, one of which repeats the wood pattern. The process is simple, in fact it is the same brushing, but already in many colors. The first coat is created by applying a dark color using a pigmented primer or stain. A brighter and lighter shade is taken as the second.
Another option is possible. The notches are darkened and the front is slightly tinted. The effect of slats is created. Initially, an experiment is carried out on pruning until the desired result is obtained.
How to paint a house lined with clapboard from the inside
The choice of a tool ultimately depends on the expected result. If it is necessary to prevent damage to the finish, protective preparations are chosen. If it is supposed to change its color, paint is needed. Let's take a closer look at both groups of funds.
Fire retardants
Retard the spread of the flame. The impregnation does not prevent ignition, but makes combustion as difficult as possible. Due to this, you can gain time for extinguishing or evacuation. Highly recommended for wood-trimmed rooms. Fire retardants are safe for people, do not change the color of the wood.
Antiseptics
They contain bactericidal substances that prevent the development of microorganisms and insects. Thanks to this, antiseptics prevent the appearance of mold, mildew, etc. Moreover, they are successfully used even after signs of infection have appeared. The disadvantage of all preparations is gradual weathering, so the surface has to be treated regularly.
Available as standalone or complex products. The former are colorless, the latter are colored. They change the natural color of the wood to the owner's chosen tone. In addition, they form a film that protects the wooden base from moisture.
Linseed oil
Natural water-repellent impregnation. Penetrates deep into the wood structure, tightly seals natural pores. Due to this, moisture loses the ability to absorb into the material and destroy it.Microorganisms do not survive in such conditions, therefore flax oil has a double effect at once. It also gives the wood a subtle hue, giving it a vibrant texture.
How to paint the lining correctly?
There is a misconception that the most relevant option is the use of oil paint. In fact, this is not true. If you use it to renew the shalyovka, then the surface of the wood will acquire an unnatural shine and will dry for a very long time. Among other things, after a very short period of time, the shale will again lose its attractiveness and will require renewal or even replacement.
It is much better to use acrylate paints and varnishes. They will not only provide an attractive appearance, but also give the base material high protective properties against moisture, temperature extremes, and, at the same time, will allow the shalyovka to "breathe". It should be noted that the approximate service life of such a coating is 8-10 years. Then the whole process will have to start over, or replace the panels with new ones.
There are often cases when, after applying a paint and varnish coating, the color of the surface becomes non-uniform. This is because the paint was not completely mixed. For the correct choice of tone, a small stroke is made on the surface of the shalyovka. It is advisable to do it in the most hidden place. When the color is chosen, the lining is covered with an antiseptic that protects the wood from rotting, mold or mildew.
A few tips from experts
If the installation of the lining was carried out a long time ago, and it was decided to update the appearance of the wood, this can be done both with your own hands and you can turn to qualified specialists for help. Of course, the first option does not require additional costs for paying for the services of masters, and that is why it is the most widespread and popular. In order for the result to turn out exactly as the owner wants, you should consult with experts in advance, look for the appropriate videos, and also clearly decide for yourself which recovery method will be most relevant in this case.
