Clapboard decoration inside the house
Lining is the leader among finishing materials. It is used both inside and outside the house, only with different treatments (impregnations and paints are taken for external or internal work). There are different types of it. It's not just about different types of wood or different board widths. There are also different profiles: smooth, wavy, imitating a timber or log house. There are several options in the photo below.
The most popular types of lining for interior decoration of a wooden house inside
Finishing of a wooden house inside can also be made from lining with a non-standard profile
For finishing inside the house, the lining is taken not thick: 1.5-2 cm is enough. It costs less, and will fulfill its functions. The slats can be placed horizontally, vertically, at an angle. From the combinations of all these directions, you can get the amazing beauty of the panel, but this is a laborious task.
When nailing the crate or planks, you need to be aware of the shrinkage of the log house and the ability of the wood to swell and shrink. Do not nail the trim and battens close to the floor and ceiling, leave 2-4 cm each to compensate for these extensions.
Clapboards are used to decorate both the walls and the ceiling. And here and there it looks more than decent, and such a finish is relatively inexpensive. It is cheaper (and easier to perform) only to cover it with plywood and paste the wallpaper. This, by the way, is a popular option for decorating a country house inside an economy class. With a sufficient level of performance, this method can also be used to decorate premises not only in the suburban version. The only objection is the glue that is used in the manufacture of plywood. But if you take it to the I class of emission (allowed for use in childcare facilities), then, probably, nothing terrible will happen.
Mounting methods
Previously, they did not particularly worry and nailed the lining into the face (into the front surface) through and through. In the best case, they used nails without caps or finishing nails (they have very small caps). Sometimes the hats were covered with putty on wood and sanded, sometimes the holes from the screws were closed with pins. This is for the most fastidious and demanding finishes.
Methods for fixing the lining
Today, even this method is considered not the most aesthetic: the traces can still be seen. To not see anything, they use secret methods:
- nails or screws are driven into a thorn or groove at an angle;
- using cleats (cleats).
Both of these methods require patience and accuracy: thin, small nails are used, they need to be nailed so as not to damage the front surface. To make it easier, you can hit not with nails, but with staples from a construction stapler. Staples are taken with a narrow back and long legs, made of stainless steel with sharpening. Although there are models of staplers that "shoot" nails with a very small head. For fixing the lining - the very thing. They also use self-tapping screws. A comparison of the two methods is made in the video.
There is one caveat. If you bought non-chamber drying lining (its moisture content is 7-8%), it will gradually dry out. There will be gaps between the planks and you will either have to put up with them, or nail all the planks again. Sometimes two or three times. There is no way to avoid this. You can only choose a profile in which the gaps will be invisible (profiles "Softline" and "Standard" in the figure in the previous section). In this regard, you need to think carefully about the better to fix the lining for the first time: it will have to be removed. Therefore, it is advisable to make it easy and not to collapse. Here everyone decides for himself: it is more convenient for someone to work with self-tapping screws, someone with nails.Both methods are not ideal (it is difficult to pull out the nails, and you need to drill a hole under the screw head), but both are acceptable.
Sometimes it becomes necessary to dock the lining with a wall of logs. Difficulty can arise due to the fact that the wall has a non-linear shape. You can outline it using a small piece of lining, to which a simple pencil is attached. Putting the plank and leading along the wall with a piece of lining with a pencil, transfer the shape of the log to the plank. By carefully sawing along the marked line, an almost perfect match can be achieved.

How to sew correctly
In the articles on bath insulation, we describe in detail the layers of the "pie" from which it is composed. Go through the materials in this section, there everything is painted by groups - ceilings, walls, the latter, in turn, by material: brick, wood, block.
Here we will recall the main thing and give more specifics on the question of "how to properly sheathe a steam room in a bath with clapboard".
The steam room is often insulated using specialized heat insulators, for example, special mineral wool for baths and saunas, which contains few binders that can evaporate when heated and harm human health.
In addition to heat insulators, foil is also popular. The pie scheme is as follows:
- first of all, a steam and waterproofing membrane is attached to the walls;
- then a crate is erected along it;
- then a heat insulator is inserted into its gaps;
- everything is closed with steam and waterproofing, which can be used as foil or foil material - paper or foamed polyethylene;
- a new layer of lathing is stuffed to form a ventilation gap;
- a lining is attached to the last crate.
Now we will not give arguments for and against foil; enough has been written about this, too. Let's just say that instead of it, you can cover the heat insulator with a membrane film.
And now the details of working with the clapboard.
There are two common ways of attaching its slats - vertically or horizontally. In the first case, the crate on the insulation is made in the form of horizontal strips, in the second - vertical.
The step of such a crate is 50-60 cm vertically (it depends on the width of the insulation minus a couple of cm so that it holds itself and does not fall out), horizontally - as desired, but in general the range for both is 40-80 cm.
The lining is fastened directly to the lathing bars, and since no one wants to see nails on the front side of the lining for both aesthetic and practical reasons (they will rust), it is fastened through the groove in any of the following ways:
- on small finishing studs or screws;
- for kleimers;
- for staples up to 40 mm long.
Here is a video for you right away, which demonstrates the fixation of the lining with the help of staples and a pneumatic gun. Very fast and very high quality work:
The advantages and disadvantages of vertical mounting are as follows: if you have a Russian bath with high humidity, each of the lamellas is heated and moistened unevenly along its entire length, this is not good for the tree and leads to its deterioration. In addition, the joints are unprotected if water spills directly onto the walls - it flows into the grooves.
But there is no high humidity in the sauna (there is no more than 15%), so a vertical set of lining is quite acceptable. It is usually done for aesthetic reasons - to make the steam room look more "slender" - it is illusoryly stretched in height.
The horizontal set of lining can be called more traditional in every sense - and the original railroad lining was fastened in this way, and it looks like laying a log or a bar, in general, it is more familiar this way. But there are also advantages: each lamella is in its own temperature "zone" and heats up evenly.
IMPORTANT! To properly sheathe the steam room in the bath, turn the lining on the walls with the groove down, with the thorn up.This will save you from problems with water flowing into the grooves .. Horizontally, you can sheathe the steam room and saunas, and the Russian bath
Horizontally, you can sheathe the steam room and saunas, and the Russian bath.
ADVICE! When you mount the lining, do not forget to use the level, especially grade B, but grade A can also have problems. Check the evenness every 5 lamellas, if there is a misalignment - compensate for it by pressing or loosening the tongue-groove connection.
Views
The classic version of the lining is considered to be a wooden board, but thanks to modern production technologies, recently you can also find products made from other materials on sale. They may differ in design, but they are all united by a single installation principle and shape. Depending on the type of raw material that is used in the creation, the lining is of several types.
Wooden
Such material is characterized by high environmental friendliness, creates a breathable coating on the surface of the walls and can be painted or varnished.
Since wood is of different classes, then wooden lining is divided into 4 types.
- Extraklass - the board is of excellent quality, has no defects, is reliable in operation, but is expensive. As a rule, it is used not only for internal, but also external wall cladding. The thickness of such a lining allows you to use the material for frame construction, its design is characterized by a beautiful performance.
- "A" class - small knots may be present on such boards, but they are in no way inferior in their qualities to top-class products.
- "B" class is a fairly durable finishing material, but various defects are noticeable on it. Since the product is highly durable, it is used for wall cladding in baths or on balconies.
- "C" class - is considered the cheapest board, it is often chosen for finishing non-residential premises and inside outbuildings.
A wooden board may differ in its shape, therefore, they distinguish: eurolining and ordinary lining. The lining is as close to natural wood as possible. Such a board under a log looks original in the interior, which can be used for decoration inside a wooden house. No less popular are the options for decorating rooms with a material shaped like a bar. As for the usual lining, it has standard sizes and shapes.
Plastic
Such decorative panels are best suited for cladding ceilings, since the material is too fragile and on the walls it will not be able to withstand heavy mechanical loads. The dies are produced in different colors and textures, so they harmoniously fit into any style of the room, filling the space with a touch of modernity.
It is undesirable to use this type of material for wall cladding in the kitchen or bathroom, as high humidity in these rooms will reduce the performance of the finish.
Lining made of plastic has numerous varieties and differs not only in design, but also in color and installation method. Boards with imitation of marble, granite and natural wood are very popular. The thickness of the plastic lining is significant, the strength is high, therefore, it is installed outside the premises.
MDF
Externally, the material is very similar to natural wood, is quickly assembled and presented with a chic choice of colors. Ideal for decorative ceilings and walls. The only drawback of such a board is considered to be instability to moisture: when it gets wet, it begins to deform and delaminate.
The lining can be produced not only in different shapes and sizes, but also differ in the presence or absence of chamfers.
Depending on this, the material is divided into the following types.
- Plain - is characterized by a flat surface. On the front side of the board there is an additional chamfer, due to which, at the end of the installation work, seams are created on the surface.As a rule, the chamfer is angular and rounded.
- "Calm" - in such a lining there is no chamfer, therefore, when sheathing, the joints are invisible. The material ideally imitates timber walls and is produced with a thickness of no more than 25 mm.
- "Landhouse" - is one of the most expensive types of lining, since special processing technologies are used for its manufacture, and the front side of the board is milled. As a result, wood patterns in the form of knots and carvings are formed on the outside of the board.
- "Blockhouse" - is a profile, thanks to which it is possible to simulate a planking from a bar. Since the board has a rounded front part, after assembling it, the wall will look as if the house was built from a real log.
Which fixing option should you choose?
It is important to decide on the method of fixing the board materials. You can sheathe a wall in several ways: Through view of fasteners
This is the simplest solution and requires little effort. The point is that the screws are screwed directly through the front side. This method involves the application of markings so that the points of the fasteners are located on the same line. In addition, holes are drilled on the wagon board in advance, which will not allow the tree to deteriorate and crack. When screwing in the screws, make sure that their caps are completely sunk into the wood. This is easy to achieve if you drill out the place under the cap in advance with a large-caliber drill. The holes formed are masked with special eraser plugs or rubbed with putty. Among the disadvantages, this method significantly violates the external aesthetic appeal of the coating.

Fastening the lining to the wall can be done with decorative studs. Their hats were originally decorated to match the color of the material.
- Hidden studs without caps would be a great option. A special feature is that such nails can only be hammered at an angle of 80 degrees. This will make it possible to hide those areas that have been violated.
- If you have a professional stapler on your farm, you can use staples for fastening.
The method of how to fix the lining to the wall is selected individually, based on the specific situation. But we note that recently it is the kleimers that have been most popular.
Installation
The process of installing wooden panels does not require any skills, therefore, finishing is not a difficult task for a beginner. However, there are still a number of specific requirements that must be met. See also the article finishing the veranda with clapboard.
For example, it is worth using lining with the required humidity level, it is desirable that the products pass through an autoclave. In principle, raw products can be purchased at the end of spring, after drying them in the summer, installation can begin in August.
Wall cladding tools
- The lining itself, which can be made of various types of wood. Most often, aspen is used for wall cladding. Provided that a sharp jump in temperature is not planned in the room;
- Special bars that are necessary for the installation of the lathing. Their fastening is necessary in increments of 40 or 50 centimeters;
- To fix the structure, self-tapping screws or dowels are needed, it all depends directly on the material of which the walls are made;
- Clips are required to attach the planks to the base. From the video, you can see that more studs and staples are required;
- Stapler, small hammer, it is more convenient for the final stage;
- The last step of installing the lining is to apply a finishing layer on an already finished structure; for this purpose, you will need any paint and varnish, or a simple varnish. The choice of coverage should be depending on what conditions are planned in this room;
- A special high-quality primer is required for wood.
Installation of lathing
Often, wood panels can be attached directly to the old wall surface, provided that the surface is flat and at the same time strong and durable.
Nevertheless, if you are wondering how to sheathe a log house with clapboard, it is better to do the preliminary installation of the lathing.
It is not difficult to create a crate, the most important thing is to observe some points and nuances.
- The supporting element of the lathing has unified dimensions, they should not exceed 20x40mm. In the event that the installation of thermal insulation is necessary, its thickness should be taken into account when installing the battens. As for the length of the racks, it depends directly on the dimensions of the room;
- The lathing should be fastened depending on the material from which the walls are made. For a wooden base, you will need to use self-tapping screws, while for stone or brick, only dowels are suitable. A step of more than 50 centimeters is not rational and dangerous;
- The racks are located perpendicular to the panels, and the elements of the future coating themselves can be installed, if desired, vertically, horizontally, or even obliquely;
- It is worth noting that all the components of the frame must lie in the same plane; to get an even result, you must use a level. Pre-prepared wooden wedges can help in alignment.
Panel mounting
If you are going to think about the question of how to sheathe walls with clapboard, you should decide on the choice of installation method. In addition, the required number of boards should be cut, for which it is required to measure all the original surfaces. This will allow you to use the material rationally.
Fixing the panels to the crate can be done in the following three ways:
- The use of clamps. This is the most optimal option, since you don't have to drive any elements into the wooden lining. As a result, the cladding is very neat and quite reliable;
- Using a stapler and staples. This fixation is called buried because the fasteners are mounted at an angle of 45 degrees. The location of the brackets is the spike of each panel. Each next board will fit into the previous one without any problems;
- Using nails. This mount is also considered a secret, and the principle is similar to the use of staples. The difference in the use of fasteners, in addition, it is important to use a finishing hammer, which allows you to drown the head.
The photo shows how to sheathe a window opening with clapboard.
Further processing
To complete the laying of the lining, a finishing layer should be applied, it can be varnish, paint, special impregnation or glaze. It is common to use paints that usually strip the wood of all of its natural properties.
In principle, on the market you can find such coatings that let air through, but their color scheme covers the natural pattern. If you are going to solve the problem of how to properly sheathe the walls with clapboard, you must study in advance all the properties of paint and varnish coatings.
The cost of installing the lining
Installing a wooden lining is a laborious process, consisting of many operations: preparing the walls, installing the battens, attaching the material to the walls and final impregnation.
If you find it difficult to do it yourself, it is recommended to contact a specialist. The approximate cost of one square meter varies from 800 rubles.
The detailed cost of the work looks like this:
- Assembly and preparation of the lathing 180 rubles.
- Wind protection device 150 rubles.
- Covering structural elements with an antiseptic 30 rubles.
- Installation of 400 rubles.
- Impregnation with varnish or paint 70 rubles.
For a more accurate answer to the question about the cost of work, you should contact the representatives of the construction company.
What wood material to take for interior decoration
There are two options for lining:
- Standard. A distinctive feature of the material is the presence of a groove, which is formed when installing adjacent strips. Such a groove is necessary to hide the place where the elements meet. In its absence, the joint will look like an ordinary gap, which does not look beautiful enough. A standard lining is used for interior wall decoration, except for the front door trim. When assembling all types of material with your own hands, the comb of one part is inserted into the groove of the adjacent one, which forms a smooth, solid surface.
- Lining "Block House". Used for cladding external surfaces. Has improved characteristics achieved by processing wood with special compounds. Visually, this material can be distinguished from a standard lining by its shape, which imitates a rounded log or bar.
Wooden lining is classified as:
- Class "A". Such material on the surface may have captive knots, no more than one by one and a half linear meters, up to two resin spots on the rail and no more than two small cracks. Of a fairly high quality, such brick lining can be used for wall cladding in any room.
- Class "B". For this quality, no more than four knots are allowed per one and a half meter of lath, up to two resin pockets and the same number of blind cracks. This material should not be used in residential areas.
- Class "C". Such lining is of the lowest quality, it is used for sheathing sheds, but not for living quarters. In this class, you can find a lot of defective rails.
Extra class. This is a lining without knots and other defects. This is the ideal lining option, which is best suited for finishing wall cladding of residential premises.
When choosing a type of material, the type of wood is also taken into account. Its performance depends on this indicator.
For example:
- Linden is distinguished by good medicinal qualities, which makes it possible to use it for decoration of such premises as a bathhouse (see Lining for a bathhouse made of linden with aromatherapy effect) or a sauna.
- Oak is the best option for exterior cladding of a building; it has a wide range of colors: from light yellow to red-brown. However, its main feature is high strength and dimensional stability.
- Larch has a fairly high resistance to decay, has a very pronounced texture. However, due to the complexity of processing, its cost increases greatly.
- Cedar, which has noble tones, is also not afraid of decay.
- Merbau is a variant with an exotic texture. Material advantages:
- moisture resistance;
- fluctuations in temperature;
- ultraviolet radiation.
When purchasing lining for interior work, it should be borne in mind that the surfaces are not exposed to the negative effects of precipitation or ultraviolet rays, which makes it possible to use rocks of lesser strength and with a better appearance.
- Maple has a wide range of colors, a fairly noble texture. It has high strength and excellent sanding properties. The material is almost flawless.
- Ash is used for interior decoration.Small vessels contained on its surface form a unique ornament on the cut.
- The walnut is quite hard, but easy to work with. The color scale of the material and the structure depend on the region of growth. Does not deform during operation.
- Cherry has an easily recognizable noble shade. Its wood darkens over time.
How to sew with your own hands?
In order to properly start attaching natural types of panels, they first need to acclimatize indoors. To do this, the lining is brought inside and left alone for at least two days. You cannot start installation immediately, as there is a high probability of warpage of the cladding elements. Deformation of the structure will occur if the walls are finished at sub-zero temperatures and high humidity.
The installation of the lining should be done only after the lathing is fully installed. If the lining is planned to be installed horizontally, the first element must be mounted at the bottom, with a spike up. With the vertical arrangement of the slats, installation begins from the corner farthest from the entrance to the room.
The first board must be absolutely exactly level. It is correct to take into account both the horizontal and vertical arrangement of the level. Even with a slight deviation of the first panel, subsequent deviations will be quite noticeable. Subsequent lining strips must first be installed in the groove of the previous ones, and then fixed with available means.
Despite the seeming difficulties, it is possible to sheathe the walls with clapboard together with insulation and with the installation of the frame in a fairly short time. The fastening of decorative parts will require special care. Corners and skirting boards must be installed with special fasteners or staples for a construction stapler. Wooden lining is additionally impregnated with stain and varnished. Other types of lining do not require additional processing.
Works look a little differently when using aluminum panels. Conventional technology involves the installation of aluminum profiles from a set of simplest modules. Installation is possible using small keys, which are usually used to assemble modern pieces of furniture upholstered with plywood.
Despite the elementary nature, the developers strive for maximum variety and original design. The modules can be installed in conjunction with brickwork. In this case, the installation of modules is possible both horizontal and vertical. The cladding is performed with discharged panels, they can also be nailed in continuous rows. Aluminum panels can be fixed to any height. Sheathing with such a ready-made designer is very convenient. This technology is available even for beginners.
Facade
In order to finish the facade in a horizontal direction, it is recommended to carry out work from the bottom up. The first plank is mounted with the spike down and attached to the crate. The second panel is installed so that its spike goes into the groove of the first, after which it should also be fixed to the crate. All subsequent panels are mounted in the same way.
Fixing the lining to the lathing can be done by means of self-tapping screws, nails, construction stapler staples, as well as specialized fasteners. It would not hurt for the fasteners to pass through the groove strip when mounting the board, then it will be invisible. When installing each panel, it is necessary to strictly control the accuracy of its location - it should be parallel to other boards. Skews and misalignments are unacceptable
It is also important that the boards are located strictly in the same plane, that is, they should not be higher or lower relative to each other.
For door and window openings, wall joints, specialized skirting boards, profile angles and strips are used. The second option is the installation of lining strips perpendicular to the base of the facade. The boards are installed and fixed in an upright position. For wall joints, two strips are used, which are set at the desired angle.The openings of doors and windows are made in a similar way (ode the plank covers the slope, the second one bases the platband).
In some cases, it is required to use a double frame for eurolining. For him, the bars are nailed in two layers, the upper one is made perpendicular to the lower one. Strengthening of the frame is required on large facades, where the own weight of the cladding is large, and the load on the supporting structure is increased.
It is better to varnish and paint the lining after installation is completed, and treatment with protective agents both inside and outside should be carried out before installation.
When cladding the facade, the lining can be used in conjunction with other materials. This will give the exterior of the house a more expressive look. You can also use lining of various colors.
What can be finished with clapboard?
There is no classic only way to finish. Due to the versatility of wooden boards, they are used both for wall or ceiling decoration and for decorative purposes.
Ceiling
If the usual painted or stretch ceiling seems boring to you, try the panels! Natural red tones will make a lining room more comfortable, dark ones will create an accent and "ground" the ceiling a little, light ones will add air.
Such a ceiling is used in the living room, kitchen, corridor. And in the bathroom it is better to refuse this solution - high humidity will significantly reduce the service life of wooden panels.
Lining on the walls
Some believe that wood wall decoration is suitable exclusively for private houses and summer cottages. On the one hand, the closer you are to nature, the more natural wooden lining will look. Moreover, in the design of summer cottages and country houses, natural styles are often used - country, chalet, Provence. The tree looks harmonious in them.
On the other hand, no one forbids giving the dacha charm to the apartment. For urban conditions, painted lining is best suited. With its help, you will create a unique, cozy interior.
In the photo there is a yellow lining in the bedroom behind the headboard
Window slopes
Plastic slopes reduce the cost of finishing and are not suitable for all interiors, therefore, inside apartments and houses, they often resort to finishing windows with lamellas.
The panels are fixed in two ways: on the crate (the same option is used for walls and ceilings), or foam.
Lining cabinet
In apartments, the interior with clapboard on the walls can most often be seen on the balcony.
For many, this room is a pantry, so it is important to organize storage places here. In order not to destroy the overall look, the cabinet is also made of slats.
It is a simple, inexpensive and functional solution.
Another place for a similar design is the attic. You don't have to order special furniture for sloped ceilings - create a frame from wood and use it as a built-in wardrobe.
In the photo, a wardrobe made of lining with louvered doors
Doors
Does your front door do not fit into the interior or is it already out of date? Do not rush to order a new one: paint it on the outside, and cover it with clapboard from the inside. Thanks to the wood, the entrance lobby will become more comfortable, and by painting it in the color of the walls, you can achieve the effect of dissolution. Wood also acts as a sound insulating material, so the apartment will become much quieter.
Boards are laid not only horizontally or vertically - there are many ways to lay out. The original panel on the door can play the role of decor.
As an independent decor
The cladding board can act not only as a finishing material, but also as a decorative element.
- One way to use it is to create a dramatic accent wall. You can lay out fancy patterns, paint the panels in vibrant colors, or both.
- The second way is to create a panel. Save money on art objects for your home: make them yourself. All you need is to think over the layout of the boards and connect them together.
- Method number 3 - false beams. Such decor is used if it is necessary to make the interior more rough, rustic.
