Restoration of old wooden windows, of which we have a lot in village houses, and not only, is a fairly simple task. Although it requires some skills and knowledge. I rate the difficulty of such work on a C on a five-point scale.
So what we need:
- knife;
- sandpaper;
- impregnation or stain;
- dye;
- brush.
Additionally, the following things may come in handy and speed up the repair:
- putty on wood (if there are irregularities and chips);
- putty knife;
- sander, preferably vibration;
- construction hair dryer;
- primer;
- varnish;
- colored acrylic paints.
Now you can start!
- First of all, we take out the old frame from the box, and then the glass from the frame.
- The second step is to remove the old paint. It is most convenient to do this with a metal spatula, but you can also use a regular knife. Also, to simplify this stage, a building hair dryer will come in handy, it will soften the old paint and varnish layer, and they will come off more easily.
- If necessary, all irregularities and chips must be putty.
- Next, we apply a special impregnation to the window, it will prevent wood from rotting. You can also use wood stain if you want to give the wood a specific shade.
- The next step is grinding. Usually, a grain size of 150 to 300 is enough, a sander, if you have one, will greatly simplify the matter.
- Next comes the primer. But it cannot be called obligatory. This is an additional protective layer that will help the paint to adhere more evenly to the surface, and is likely to extend the durability of the work done.
- Now, painting. If you want to paint the window frame, and not leave it natural or stained, then it's time to remember the drawing lessons at school and show your creativity. After that, it is recommended to grind the surface again with fine sandpaper so that there are no smudges and other irregularities. Some paints already contain varnish, so if you use them, you can skip the following steps.
- Next comes varnishing. I will not insist on the choice of a specific varnish, very often they use a yacht one, but my personal experience has led me to automobile ones, which can be bought even in an ordinary spray can. After we have varnished the surface, it is better to use fine sandpaper again, the goals are the same.
- And finally, we need to insert the glass into the frame, and install the latter in its rightful place. We treat all joints and cracks with a sealant.
