Varieties
The first hanging chair appeared in Denmark in the middle of the 20th century. This designer furniture is most often used for arranging a garden plot and less often for apartments in megacities. An unusual design combined with a variety of materials makes this piece of furniture in demand among many buyers.
A hanging chair is a comfortable seating area that is usually made from natural or man-made materials such as vines or rattan. The product itself is either suspended from the ceiling, or installed on a special stand so that you can swing in the lounger. It is also called a rocking chair or swing chair, since their main purpose is to rock a person.
Hanging chairs can be divided into wicker, fabric, hard and soft, and they differ in shape and material. These products are designed to swing in different directions. There is only one kind of hanging chair that does not move diagonally and back and forth. It is attached to the floor and ceiling, and therefore can only rotate in a circle.
The frame of the product can be made of various materials. Rigid ones are made of rattan, vine, metal, acrylic or transparent plastic. And to soften the product, they cover it with a soft blanket or put a padding mattress inside. Sometimes the base is covered with a dense fabric, and small pillows are placed on top.
The hammock chair has a soft frame, because it is made of a fabric base, which is suspended from the ceiling.
Swing chair
The difference between this design is that it cannot rotate and only moves in one direction. This is achieved by the fastening method. The chair is fixed from above not at one point, but at several.
A convenient and simple fixture is obtained from fabric. This will require dense material, a wooden stick and ropes.
Operating procedure:
- 1The canvas rectangle is folded in half and cut from the top corner to the opposite corner. A triangle is formed.
- 2The edges of the fabric are processed.
- 3To make pockets for pulling in ropes, draw 2 parallel lines on 2 sides, retreating from the edge of 16 cm.
- 4 The material is folded and hemmed.
- 5 In a wooden stick 5 and 10 cm recede from the edges, and 4 holes are drilled.
- 6 The rope is pulled through the hole in the stick and is fixed with a knot from above.
- 7 The second end of it is passed through the pocket of the fabric and is also tied.
- 8 An extension of the rope is pulled into the second hole in the stick and tied to a metal ring.
- 9 The same manipulations are carried out with the second rope on the other side.
This hammock can be used in an apartment or under a shady tree.
Rocking hammock
The hammock chair is very comfortable to use. It is used both in the house and in the country. It is not difficult to make it with your own hands. To do this, you must have a certain set of tools and required materials. There are many types of designs and you can choose any that best suits these conditions and will be the least expensive.
Step-by-step instruction number 2: linen hammock chair
Hanging hammock chair made of natural linen is a great option for a nursery or a veranda
Such a product is very practical to use, because it is simple to make and easy to wash. This advantage allows you to use a hammock chair in the children's room, as well as in the backyard.
For manufacturing, we need the following:
- oak stick - 1 pc.;
- light fabric (linen, canvas) - 2 m.;
- sewing machine;
- acrylic paint for fabric;
- brush;
- mountaineering rope;
- carabiners for fastening;
- drill;
- drill 3/8 inch;
- marker;
- scissors;
- iron;
- ruler.
Manufacturing technique:
- The prepared canvas should be folded in half and measured from the upper right edge 18 cm.At this point, make a mark and draw a line to the bottom of the canvas.
- Carefully cut off the resulting triangular fragment and unfold the canvas.
- Then we bend the top edge about 1.5 cm and hold it with a hot iron to fix it.
- Then we repeat the operation with the same fragment, stitching the fold along the lower edge of the strip.
- Draw the bottom edge of the canvas in the same way.
- Then you need to make pockets for the rope, which should be threaded on each side. To do this, we rotate the canvas so that its long edge is on the right hand. We bend the corners 4 cm and also iron it.
- We make 2 lines along the rolled edge of the strip. We repeat the operation for the other side of the canvas.
- Then we take a stick and measure two segments from its sides - 5 cm and 10 cm. In the marked places we make holes with a drill.
- Next, we lay out the canvas on a cardboard backing and apply the desired pattern. After the acrylic paint has dried, repeat the operation for the back of the canvas.
- We make a knot on one side of the stretched rope so that the end is 7 cm long. We pass the free "tail" through the outer hole and pass it through the seat pocket.
- We tie it, making an indent from the first knot by 8 cm, and pass the rope into the second hole. Then we pass it down through the opposite edge.
- We carry out the operation with another pocket, making the last knot with a "tail" of 7 cm.
- Then, in the center of the rope above the stick, we tie it so that a loop of about 20 cm comes out.
- We fix the hook on the ceiling, we hook two carbines, to which the hammock chair will be attached.
- This completes the process.
Stages of connecting parts
On the basis of the frame part, we wrap the foam rubber and glue it. On top of this layer we wrap a tape or rope of fasteners. The frame parts do not have to be the same size; the parts range from the largest to the smallest in the shape of the chair.
To attach the chair to the ceiling, it is worth making sure that the strength meets the requirements. A hook is mounted in the ceiling, on which the swing is suspended.
In the absence of the possibilities and desire for installation in the ceiling, you can use special racks that are easy to move and do not bring unnecessary trouble.
The use of various designs of hanging chairs in the country or in the house creates a special individual interior. They can be used indoors, on terraces and in open areas.
But you should be aware that in open areas it is necessary to use non-wet materials. Hanging chairs will create comfortable conditions for both adults and young children.
How to make a cocoon chair with your own hands
The classic option is a wicker chair made of flexible twigs of willow, rattan, bakery or bast. For those living in central Russia, the following materials are recommended: broom or willow, densely growing along the banks of rivers.
To complete the work, prepare the following:
1. Long rods of willow, with a diameter of 10 to 15 mm, quantity - 400 - 450 pieces. A more flexible and easy-to-use material is rattan, recommended for those who are weaving for the first time.
2. The frame of the outer part of the furniture will be a hoop made of metal, pipes made of metal-plastic or twigs braided with a scythe.
3. Prepare sturdy twine and glue to tie the frame.
4. To measure and cut the material, we use a pruner, an awl, a knife and a ruler.
5. We will weave the back with a nylon cord with a cross section of 4 mm. A vine is recommended for the back, but this is an option for those familiar with the weaving technique.
6. We will hang the chair on ropes, cords or chains. The length depends on the height of the room.
The type of weaving may vary, it all depends on the skill.
How to make a chair:
1.First, we prepare the vine: we steam it and peel it from the bark, and then we beat it off. These manipulations will make her more malleable.
2. We start by forming the wireframe. If a hoop is chosen as the front part, and the shape itself should be oval, it will have to be flattened. And yet, it is recommended at this stage to use a metal-plastic pipe, which bends easily, and its ends are connected by an insert.
3. The frame elements are attached to the pipe. The thickness of the rods in the section should be from 6 to 8 mm, and the length - from 250 to 400 mm above the chair (with vertical fastening). If there is no material of this length, the elements are fixed horizontally.
4. When installing the rods vertically, they must be fixed in the upper part of the frame so that at the level of the middle of the back there is a distance of 20 - 25 mm between them.
5. To give the desired shape, the rods are bent, and then assembled to the middle.
6. To secure the frame vine to the base, it is bent through the tube from the inside of the chair to the outside. This end is intercepted with a vine with twine.
7. The next step is the transverse weaving of the frame rods with a thinner vine. You need to start from the bottom. At the end of the pipe, the rod is bent, then twisted around the main vine.
8. This method is used to braid the entire frame of the furniture. The finishing rod must be bent, tucked in, and then fixed.
When the frame is ready, all that remains is to pick up a thick enough foam cushion that will serve as a seat.

There are other ways to make your own cocoon chair. The only condition is that you need to be a diligent, diligent person. There are many options, select for a specific interior and get to work.
How to hang a chair from the ceiling
The main requirement here is reliability. In second place is the aesthetic component, because the furniture should decorate the room.
Mounting methods
Several options are possible, the choice between which depends on the type of overlap. A hole is drilled in the concrete ceiling with a perforator and an anchor with a hook is screwed in until it stops. A ring is suspended from below, on which a carbine with a chain or cable is put on.
In ordinary city apartments, slabs have voids, so a hole must be drilled between them. For reliability, a chemical anchor is additionally used. This is a polymer-based solution that is filled in the hole before the hook is screwed in. It then solidifies and fixes the anchor firmly in the ceiling. Therefore, even if it enters the void compartment, the fastening will be reliable. Sold in hardware stores.
The next method is suitable for private houses with wooden beams. If they are strong enough, you can screw in a self-tapping screw with a ring and hang the chair on it.
When none of these options are suitable, a supporting screen or busbar is suitable. Usually a metal profile is used, which is fixed to the ceiling. The result does not look very aesthetically pleasing, so it is masked, for example, decorated with a false beam.
You can also use special punching bag ceiling mounts. They are designed for heavy loads. Structurally, they are a plate with a hook, which is fastened with 4 bolts.
Installation instructions
Consider the method that works best for a standard apartment - with a chemical anchor. For work, you will need a puncher, fasteners and a construction syringe.
First, it is determined where the air cavity is in the ceiling. For this, the surface is tapped. A hole is drilled between the voids and cleaned with a small brush or a directed air jet. The cavity is filled from a syringe with a polymer composition.
Then the anchor is screwed in and wait for the product to harden. It takes from two hours to a couple of days (information is indicated on the packaging and in the instructions).
Varieties
There are several types of hanging chairs. By design, they are divided into frame and frameless. The frame serves as the basis for the materials that the furniture will be braided with. The frameless version is a piece of fabric folded in half, fixed at the ends to a base post or a hook on the ceiling.
Depending on the shape and design, such models can have different purposes:
- swing chairs - for entertainment;
- nest chair - for comfortable rest;
- a cocoon armchair that creates an atmosphere of seclusion in nature.
Hanging chairs in the interior of a balcony or terrace always look original. Products in the form of a cocoon or a drop suspended from a steel stand will be appropriate on the lawn in the shade of a spreading tree. Solid dense sidewalls will shelter the rest from wind and drafts. Or, together with your child, you can make a hanging chair for a children's room. It is convenient to play, relax, read books in it, and the child will certainly be proud that he also took part in the process.
An interesting option is a do-it-yourself wicker chair suspended from a thick horizontal branch of a large tree in the garden or directly from the ceiling in the living room. This design does not require a rack. This is convenient because the furniture will not interfere when mowing the grass or when cleaning the room.
Models and designs differ. Furniture can be covered or braided with different materials:
- cloth;
- artificial or natural rattan;
- colored plastic cord.
The choice of the type of chair and material depends on the purpose of the hanging furniture and the design of the room.

Style and design
In terms of style and design, the choice of hanging chairs is now enormous. Of course, the egg shape hasn't lost its popularity for decades in a row. It is this type that is most often chosen for garden plots. It is attractive because it is very convenient to hide from everything and be alone with yourself.
Forms
Egg-shaped models only distantly resemble an egg in shape. Today they have undergone a lot of changes, in some places they have become more elegant. In some chairs, we can see narrowing on the sides, and in some, some additional elements such as a footrest or additional armrests. The oval view is more closed and secluded, so it is chosen mainly by those who like to spend time in solitude.
The round shape is also very popular. The sphere-shaped armchairs look rather massive. To smooth this out, designers began to make them in the form of openwork lace or made of transparent materials. An excellent option that will look light and graceful is a round base woven from multi-colored threads. Drop-shaped forms also occupy one of the leading positions. Often, these models are easy to install, since they do not have to be fixed to the frame. They will look great anywhere in the garden and are suitable even for an afternoon nap. These chairs are especially popular with children, as they are easy to hide in.
Colors
Swing cocoons can be of a variety of colors, ranging from white to fancy rainbow patterns. For a garden, brown in all its natural shades or green is best suited. Such models will be perfectly camouflaged among the lush greenery. If the chair is chosen for a child or for the purpose of raising the mood, then it is better to opt for bright monochromatic models, for example, yellow or lilac. For lovers of the marine theme, a combination of white, blue and yellow colors is ideal.
For balconies, cocoon chairs in light or, conversely, dark colors are best suited. This will give them elegance and sophistication. If you want to diversify and cheer yourself up a little, then you can use multi-colored bright pillows.
Sizing and drawing
Before you start making a chair, you need to determine what size it will be. In a large one, if you surround yourself with a large number of pillows, of course, it will be more comfortable, but a small one can sometimes seem more comfortable. In addition, if you have to use a chair indoors, then its size will depend on the area of the room. A large object in a small room will look cumbersome and ridiculous, no feeling of comfort will come out.
A child's hanging chair can have a seat size from 50 to 90 cm, and an adult - from 80 to 120 cm. The height of the finished structure will depend on the installation method. In order for self-made hanging chairs to be safe, you need to calculate their bearing capacity with a margin. A child should support the weight of a seated person about 90-100 kg, and an adult - 130-150 kg.
Having determined the size and purpose, you can draw up a small drawing in which the model will be depicted to scale. This makes it easier to calculate the dimensions of the parts used in the assembly. All elements of the frame can be drawn separately on paper, and then transferred to the blanks, increasing the size.
When drawing up a drawing, you can take as a basis any ready-made version or draw your own. It is imperative to draw out the environment in which the chair will be subsequently installed or suspended, since its size must be determined, including taking into account the dimensions of the rest of the furniture. But the material for arranging the seat will have to be adjusted during work, when the frame is already ready. It is unlikely that it will be possible to calculate the amount of fabric or rattan using the drawings.
