Necessary materials
To make the right roll curtains, consider some of the nuances. For example, initially you need to sew two canvases on the wrong side if the fabric is one-sided.
Users often search for:
When calculating the amount of fabric, do not forget about the additional 2-4 cm that will go to the seams. Consider the location of the curtains in the window opening: will the canvas cover the frame or only the glass.
When choosing the color of the fabric, do not lose sight of the geographical location of the room. For the sunny side, bright, cheerful shades are suitable, and transparent roller blinds can be hung on the shaded northern windows.
A few useful tips will greatly facilitate the choice of material for curtains:
- so that the windows do not merge with the walls, the color of the fabric should be different from the tone of the wallpaper;
- designers recommend choosing a palette for curtains in accordance with the upholstery;
- if you want to visually enlarge the inner space of gazebos or verandas, you can use translucent canvases;
- transverse stripes on the curtains visually expand the walls, and the vertical pattern can increase the height of the ceiling.

After purchasing a fabric suitable for the interior, take care of the rest of the components necessary for making roller curtains on your own:
- rod-shaft for winding the canvas - is attached above the window opening and acts as a cornice;
- decorative cords and tapes - used as garters to securely fix the fabric, placed in the upper area of the system, near the shaft mechanism;
- a special weighting agent - fixed at the bottom of the curtain panel, prevents the fabric from puffing up.
Cassette roller blinds - fastening mechanism
The manufacturing process of roller blinds consists of several stages:
- the fabric is cut to size and sewn on three sides in the form of a bag. The resulting workpiece is turned onto the face;
- for the weighting agent, a special pocket is formed at the bottom of the product, or the weighting agent is placed between the canvases and the fabric is sewn with a small indent. After that, the workpiece is finally sewn up;
- having made a margin of 5 cm, the upper part of the canvas is installed either on a bar-shaft or on a wooden bar-cornice. The fabric is secured with a stapler or a zipper is used, which makes it easy to remove the curtains for washing;
- two decorative garters are made of a ribbon, the length of which is 30 cm longer than twice the length of the curtain, and the width is 8 cm.The garters are thrown over the cornice and fixed with a furniture stapler (as an option, they are fastened with hooks, snakes, which will further facilitate the care of roller blinds );
- at the final stage, the bar-shaft is fixed on the frame or in the window opening.

How to make roller blinds with your own hands
Today, choosing the right curtains for your home is no problem. You can buy any model, color; the variety of types of fabric also gives space for imagination. But why not take the opportunity to sew such a product yourself? Roller blinds are very easy to make, and you can use them to add a special chic and style to any room - from the kitchen to the living room.
Features of curtains and suitable fabrics
Designers argue that blinds are not the best option for living spaces, they are more suitable for an office. These devices are being replaced by roller blinds, which are just as easy to use, but at the same time cozy and home-like. It is very easy to sew them, and even easier to install.
Many people confuse roller blinds with Roman ones, and even consider them the same. Yes, these products have a lot in common both in appearance and in the principle of attachment to the surface and the manufacturing process. However, there is a significant difference between Roman and roller blinds.It consists in the following: for the first product, folding is ensured due to the sewn-in strips, according to the accordion principle; the second type of curtains is twisted into a roll; there are no slats along the length of the curtain, providing rigidity.
The installation of such a curtain can be done in three ways:
- on the wall;
- above the window;
- onto the frame.
It is especially easy to attach such a curtain to a plastic window. The cassettes installed on the frame do not interfere with the operation of the window sash, and the U-shaped guide holds the fabric tightly, keeping it taut.
Almost all materials can be used for roller blinds, but it is better to purchase a special fabric impregnated with an antistatic or antibacterial composition. This is especially true for products that will be used in the kitchen or bathroom. By the degree of transparency, these fabrics can be:
- transparent;
- translucent;
- blackout.
The range of patterns and colors is unlimited.
The most popular fabric for sewing roller blinds is polyester. Antistatic impregnation prevents adhesion of polyester to the canvas. You can choose a material with a metallic finish or a soft pearlescent sheen.
Teflon coated cloths are very easy to clean due to their dirt and water repellency. There are also fabrics with fire protection.
Note! Real, high-quality impregnations, which form a protective layer on the fabric, are completely harmless to the body. In order not to buy a fake, ask the seller for the appropriate hygiene certificates.
Sewing products
In our master class, we will tell you how to sew a simple roller blind. This option will not require large expenses and special skills in tailoring from you.
Necessary materials
- Cuts of fabric of different types or colors for the face and wrong side - 2 pcs.
- Wooden bars equal to the width of the window frame - 2 pcs. (for attaching the curtain and making it heavier).
- Scissors.
- A centimeter or ruler.
- Cord.
- Ring screws - 5 pcs.
- Hook screws - 3 pcs.
- Threads, needles, sewing machine.
Step-by-step instruction
- Measure your window frame. According to the calculations obtained, cut out two segments with the required dimensions from the prepared fabric. Leave stocks for seam allowances: 10 cm in length and 3 cm in width.
- Sew two pieces of fabric inside out. Leave one end unsewn, turn the product through it. Tie off the section, iron the curtain with an iron.
- Choose which side of the future curtain will be directed to the wall. This will be the front part.
- Place the product face down on a flat surface. Sew the "pockets" for the planks: bend the edges of the curtain from the bottom by 1.5 cm, from the top by 3 cm, sew, insert the planks inside.
- The top bar will serve to secure the product to the wall. Carefully screw two ring screws into it through the fabric from above, and two more screws from the front side. Step 5 cm from one edge of the plank and screw another ring into it.
- To roll up the roller blind, you need to attach a cord. Unwind and cut the two cords. The length of one should be equal to three lengths of the curtain, the other should be the same plus 1/2 the length of the curtain.
- Thread the cords into the rings on the fastening bar. Remember: the longer cord must be tied to a ring farther from the common side ring.
- Pass the cords along the seamy side of the curtain, pass through the ring screws. Pull out through a common side loop, tie the cords together.
- If you want to hang the roller blind on a plastic window, first screw in two screws-hooks into the frame. They should be located strictly opposite the upper rings located on the curtain. Hang the product. Screw another hook screw into the frame on the side: you will wind the cord of the curtain rolled up on it.
Blinds-pleated paper wallpaper
This is the most elementary way to quickly get to the desired goal - to get a saving structure. For work you will need:
- wallpaper;
- bead (for end stop);
- rope (for example, laundry) or cord;
- hole punch (awl);
- ruler;
- a knife (preferably a clerical one);
- centimeter;
- scotch tape, double-sided (or glue);
- retainer.
The ease of operation can be seen by simply reading the procedure.
- Armed with a measuring tape, measure the window. Since an accordion is to be made from a piece of wallpaper, then from 30 to 40 cm are added to the height.If the width of the window does not allow one strip of paper to be dispensed with, then the second is glued with tape or glue.
- The material is folded like an accordion so that the width of one "lamella" is 3-6 cm. Next, the semi-finished product is tried on to the window, the excess is cut off. The accordion is folded. Holes are made in the center of the folded strips with a hole punch.
- A rope is threaded into the resulting holes, the section is fixed on top with the same tape. The surplus is cut off. Double-sided tape is glued to the top of the accordion. Scotch tape is glued to the bottom edge so that half of its width remains free.
- The bottom is folded in a fan and glued, getting a "peacock's tail". Blinds in a straightened form are attached to the window, the excess rope is cut off, leaving a small margin. Then they put on the retainer, pull the rope into the end bead, tie a knot on it.
Such blinds look elegant, but they will last for a relatively long time in one case: if high-quality wallpaper is chosen. On the other hand, such curtains can appeal to those who love change, because at any time there is an opportunity with minimal effort to change the color of boring decorations.
Tips: how to update your curtains with your own hands
Roller blinds are good because they can be updated at any time. Roller blinds can be improved by using a dense fabric texture. The updated curtains will not only be practical, but will also revive the interior, make it original and effective. Before proceeding with the update, it is necessary to re-measure the window opening.
When gluing the fabric, you need to be very careful. It needs to be smoothed so that it does not lie in ugly folds. The fabric must be glued gradually, step by step, starting from the bottom and ending with the top.
Sequencing:
- Measure the opening;
- Cut out curtain and fabric;
- Glue the fabric to the curtain with glue.
The fabric must be wrapped to the wrong side for the fabric to look beautiful. For the folds to adhere well, you can put something heavy on them, such as books. With updated curtains, window openings will look stylish and fashionable.
Varieties of roller blinds
As the name implies, the peculiarity of such products is the folding of the fabric into a compact roll when opening and unrolling the roll, if necessary, to close the window opening. Due to the fact that the fabric (or other material) can be collected not only in a roll, but also in folds, they are distinguished:
- classic roller blinds of the open (with a roller for winding the fabric installed directly in the opening) and closed (the roller is hidden in a special case) type;
- pleated - the fabric or non-woven material is smoothed into small parallel folds (pleated), located horizontally. When closing, the folds are tightly pressed against each other, when opened, they sag freely, the fabric straightens out almost to its entire length;
- Roman ones are analogous to pleats, but the folds in this model are much larger. For assembly, rigid strips or rods are sewn (inserted) into the places of separation of the folds.
Also, roller blinds are sometimes called curtains with transverse transparent and opaque stripes. Such curtains are a closed (sewn) strip of fabric sliding along the top and bottom roller. At the same time, due to the special arrangement of the stripes, the canvas becomes transparent or opaque - the "day-night" mode.
In fact, all varieties are united by a roller shutter design, where there is an upper supporting part, a panel and a mechanism for its compact assembly. In this case, the "mechanism" is sometimes understood as the simplest tissue grips, fixing the tissue collected or rolled into a roller.
Introduction to curtains
In order not to get into a mess in the manufacture, not for a moment to regret the decision made, it is better to get acquainted in detail with the new design, the principle of operation, the varieties of these curtains.
How the roll mechanism works
The main element of roll-up devices is a bar with a circular cross-section, its task is to raise or lower the curtains: partial or complete. This is achieved by using a cord that drives the shaft. To fix the straightened fabric, a weighting agent is provided in the design. Cords, ribbons or other similar elements act as garters. The position of the boom can be different. In some models, it is at the bottom, at the same time performing the duties of the load, in other designs, the shaft is attached to the frame or cornice.
Despite the same principle of operation, roller blinds differ somewhat structurally. Some models are equipped with additional elements that are supposed to improve the appearance, make the operation more comfortable. To protect the fabric from dust, some models are equipped with closed roller boxes. Practical roller shutters are no less popular, in which magnetic tapes or guides are provided to prevent distortions of fabric rolls.
What will outweigh: the pros or cons
Before planning the design of a mechanism for roller blinds with your own hands, it is necessary to comprehensively assess the feasibility of such a solution. Therefore, it will be useful to show the advantages of roller blinds, but at the same time point your finger at their disadvantages. Advantages that many will agree with:
- reliable protection from prying eyes due to a snug fit to the opening;
- ease of installation on the cornice, frame of any window: both plastic and wooden;
- maximum free space that traditional curtains cannot boast of;
- two roles at once performed by roller blinds, because in addition to curtains, they are used as fabric blinds;
- the possibility of combination with other similar products - lambrequins, curtains, tulle.
This can also include savings if the independent production of roller blinds is conceived, since very little materials, including textiles, will be required.
Disadvantages, alas, are present in everyone and everything, roller shutters are no exception. Among the "fly in the ointment":
- insufficient variability of light intensity control, which distinguishes blinds from blinds;
- Potential malfunctions if a simple model without guides is selected.
These disadvantages are unlikely to outweigh the many advantages, this difference is the secret of the success of these designs. Roller shutters can be found at every step: in apartments, private houses, shopping centers, businesses and offices.
Types of structures
When planning to build a mechanism for roller blinds with your own hands, you need to get acquainted with the design features of the roller blind in advance. There are several types of lifting devices, each of which has both advantages and disadvantages. Their types are:
- Spring loaded. These mechanisms can be installed at the bottom or at the top of the curtains. The advantage is that there is no need to manipulate the holders, since all work is done automatically - with the help of a spring. However, the minus lies precisely in these parts, this is their rapid wear, so they will need to be replaced frequently.
- Chain - the simplest, almost trouble-free designs. The curtains in them are adjusted manually - by means of a rope, plastic chain or cord. These elements, thrown over the bar, are fixed at the bottom of the structure canvas. As the rope is pulled, the roller starts to rotate, lowering or raising the fabric. In this case, holders (garters, clips) are needed to fix the canvas in a certain position.Here, it is the simplicity of the design that is the guarantor of its durability. Another plus is the low cost.
- Electric drive systems. It is rather difficult to make such a mechanism for roller blinds with your own hands, since the structure is supplied with an electric motor that opens and closes the curtains. Manipulations require a remote control or a switch. Advantage - ease of use, disadvantage (except labor intensity) - high cost. Such lifting mechanisms are the only option for large openings - on panoramic or dormer windows.
This, roll, category mistakenly includes another type of curtains - Roman. However, despite all the external similarity, the difference is still great: roller shutters have a shaft on which the canvas is wound, and the "Romans" are simply gathered in folds.
Types of structures, device of the lifting mechanism
Roller blinds are classified according to the type of structure control:
- With chain mechanism. They are distinguished by the absence of guides, the ability not to limit the maximum length of the web. At the same time, the blinds hang freely; when lowering or raising, the canvas is pulled onto a special roller, to which a chain with a mechanism is attached.
- With spring mechanism. In addition to the spring structure, they have guides along the edges, a special mechanism for fixing the material. It is convenient to place them in the window opening, on its sash or in the doorway.
The classification by construction type looks like this:
- Classic. Blinds can hang freely or fit inside the cassette, they can be attached to walls or ceilings.
- Blinds. The size is easily matched to the dimensions of the sash. Cassette design, equipped with guides.
- Compact. These are mini curtains attached to a shaft with a chain that allows you to vary the amount of light entering the room.
Suitable materials for the production of roller blinds
The most demanded materials for the production of roller blinds are fabrics: linen, polyester, nylon and cotton. No less popular are combined canvases - polyester with the addition of viscose, cotton or satin, fiberglass and polyvinyl chloride with fiberglass.
All of the fabrics listed above are distinguished by a high degree of practicality, ease of maintenance and durability. A large selection of colors and ornaments allows you to choose a canvas that suits any interior
Particular attention, however, should be paid to the degree of transparency - while thin fabrics are preferable for the kitchen, living room and study, thick curtains are more suitable for bedrooms.
According to the degree of shading, fabric roller shutters can be divided into several groups:
-
translucent and transparent - satin, silk, cotton, which perfectly diffuse the sun's rays, but poorly darken the space - are good for protection from prying eyes on a sunny day;
-
blackout - an opaque canvas with a complete blackout effect - ideal for bedrooms, home theaters, ceiling and dormer windows, since the material is able to provide good conditions for relaxation even in bright sunlight;
-
dimout - textiles with a medium darkening effect - retains 70% of the light, therefore, it is a universal solution for the living room, nursery and bedroom;
-
zebra (day / night) - a material with alternating transparent and matte stripes - allows you to control the degree of lighting in a room on the principle of blinds.
You can also make roller blinds out of paper. Often, ordinary wallpaper is used, however, a significant drawback of such material is fragility - paper curtains, as a rule, do not differ in durability.
Another unusual option for the material for roller blinds is wooden planks or thin bamboo slats.They not only do not fade in the sun, but also reliably protect the room from bright rays and are highly durable.
However, in a draft, the moving canvas will create a rather noticeable noise, and its impressive weight requires a particularly reliable fixation of the structure. At the same time, wood cannot boast of the same variety of shades and ornaments as the same textiles.
This style of roller blinds is perfect for an apartment or a private house, decorated in the style of a bungalow.
Master class number 1: Blinds-pleated wallpaper
You can make such paper blinds in just a couple of hours, and if you still have wallpaper after renovation, then you don't even have to go to the store. The pleated blinds will last for about a year, and then you can simply make new ones, because that way is so simple, beautiful and economical. And paper blinds are great for decorating the windows of country houses and joint creativity with children.
To make blinds from wallpaper as in the photo above, you will need:
- A roll of paper wallpaper (only paper wallpapers are suitable, since vinyl and non-woven ones cannot gather in an accordion);
- Auxiliary materials: scissors or stationery cutter, ruler, pencil;
- Awl or hole punch (an awl is better);
- Rope longer than the height of the window and 5-7 mm thick or a thin satin ribbon;
- Retainer with end piece of a suitable color;
- If desired, two more tapes of any width and length 2.5 times the height of the window. These ribbons are only needed for decoration;
- Double-sided tape (or glue) and Velcro to match the wallpaper, if you want to make curtains with a "swag" around the edge.
Instructions:
- First, you need to cut off a piece of wallpaper of the required length at the rate: window height + 30 cm. Then you need to assemble the canvas in an accordion. You can do this by eye, but pleating will turn out more neat if you pre-lined the wallpaper from the back side into strips 2.5-3 cm wide.A ruler will help you to bend the wallpaper exactly, and a pencil or pen will help you iron and fix the folds.
- Now the resulting accordion from the wallpaper needs to be assembled, measured and marked in the middle on the first "lamella" and a through hole made in this place using an awl. You can also use a hole punch, but then the holes will have to be made in parts and the holes will turn out not in the middle of the "lamellas", but a little closer to the edge, but they will be more accurate and wide. Next, we take the rope and lead it through the entire accordion. If the rope is synthetic, then its tip can be burned a little to make it sharp, then it will be easier to thread the rope through the holes.
- The end of the rope on the first top "lamella" must be tied into a knot so that it does not slip out of the hole, and the end itself can either be left to tie the curtains to the cornice, or cut if you want to glue and attach the curtains directly to the window frame.
- At this stage, you can also glue a solid base to the first lamella, for example, cardboard, plastic corner or a thin strip, in order to use it to hang the blinds on the windows.
- On the lower end of the rope (at the bottom of the curtains) we put on a retainer and assemble our curtains to the desired level. Now we glue the Velcro on the right and left ends of the wallpaper using glue or double-sided tape, then glue these Velcro and ... woo-ala! We get pleated blinds with a "swag".
- Finally, we attach our curtains to the window.
Advice:
If you want to make horizontal blinds without a swag, then you need to make through holes in two places, as shown in the picture on the right. And, of course, in this case you will need either two ropes or one long one. And to make the horizontal blinds more interesting, you can decorate them with ribbons, which, moreover, will hide the ropes and fix the curtains at the desired level. An example of such a decor, see the photo below.
Instead of a retainer, you can use a button of a suitable size with two or three holes as shown in the photo below.
Of course, each accordion blank can be cut to width. But, as a rule, wallpaper of a standard width of 53-55 cm is quite suitable for a standard window. But if you need more blinds, then you can choose a wallpaper with a width of 1 m.
And here is a selection of photos of different ideas for your inspiration.
Do-it-yourself pleated blinds
They are suitable for a living room located on the sunny side. Such blinds look gentle and airy. Made of white sheet of Whatman paper, they will perfectly fit into any interior. Moreover, they can be made in any color scheme due to the possibility of their coloring. The big advantage of such blinds is their low price (you can use suitable pieces of old wallpaper).
For paper blinds you need to prepare:
- Awl or hole punch.
- Wallpaper or sheet of whatman paper.
- A centimeter tape.
- A bead or lanyard clip.
- A ruler 55-120 cm wide.
- Double-sided tape or other means of attachment.
- Scissors.
- Stationery knife.
- Cord or braid.
- A simple pencil.
Making blinds from wallpaper with your own hands begins with the preparation of paper elements. Cut a piece from the roll of wallpaper, 30-40 centimeters longer than the height of the window. Line it from the seamy side into sections of 2-3 centimeters. Next, you need to attach a ruler and bend the strips, as for a fan. You can additionally tighten the fold with a pencil. It is allowed to make light cuts on vinyl wallpaper with a clerical knife.
Fold the accordion and make holes for the lace in the center of the strips using an awl or hole punch. You can make one hole in the center, which will allow you to get a rounded bottom later. If you use two laces, the blinds will be rectangular. It is better to use the braid of the same diameter as the awl. Its length should not be less than the height of the window frame.
With your own hands, you can step by step create the most unusual details. Curtains of this size will be able to drop completely in the future. To get a rounded bottom, you need to glue the squares of the Velcro tape to the corners. This procedure can be done using Moment glue or double-sided tape. An additional square for better fixation is located in the middle of the distance from the edge to the center.
At the end of the lace, a bead or a garment retainer is fixed so that it does not slip out when closed. The upper edge of the element must be attached either to the window with double-sided tape, or to an already installed cornice.
This design can be complemented with butterflies, sequins and other decorative elements. The main thing in the manufacture and use of such blinds is accuracy.
Description
- For roller blinds, dustproof fabrics with antistatic impregnation are used, which makes cleaning easier, such curtains do not require washing.
- Fabric roller blinds are in perfect harmony with curtains and drapes, if required by the design idea.
- They perform a protective function against burnout of fabric interior items, from overheating and scorching sunlight, from the glances of passers-by.
- Easy replacement of fabric with roller blinds will allow numerous variations of the interior change according to the season or mood.
- Fabric roller blinds can be fixed at different levels, so that the degree of illumination of the premises can be adjusted. And thanks to the special BlackOut fabrics, you can create complete opacity and blackout.
- An air gap is created between the curtain and the glass unit, which does not let cold air inside in winter, and keeps it cool in summer.
Master Class
- Dimity.
- Cloth, ribbons or decorative cords for garters.
- Wooden bar for fasteners.
- Wooden plank for weighting.
- Screws and screwdriver.
- Sewing accessories.
Step 1
It is necessary to decide how the roller blinds will be attached and how they are located. They can be installed directly on a frame, above a window on a wall or in a window opening.
Also decide on the curtain rolling mechanism.
Either it will be just a hand-wound roll on decorative tapes, or with the use of rings and lacing, or special fastening kits.The complete set is equipped with a roller with a side lifting mechanism.
Designer advice: for plastic windows for installing blinds on the frame, special removable square fasteners are sold that cling to the frame from above.
A variety of roller blinds are the so-called Roman blinds, the principle of which is borrowed from the sailors, who thus collected the sails. Roman blinds gather in horizontal folds.
Perhaps an article on how to make blinds with your own hands will be useful to you.
You can find out how to make a stained-glass window from a film on a window here.
And this article will tell you how to clean windows.
For Roman blinds, blinds can be used as a lifting mechanism. Fix the selected curtains instead of the blinds.
Step 2
Considering the location of the curtains, cut two pieces of fabric to the appropriate size.
The fabric used for the front and back sides of the curtains can be with different prints. Or maybe the same, then you can decorate the curtain with applique or braid and lace.
If you install the blinds on the frame, the length and width of the curtains will be equal to the length and width of the window. If - on the wall above the window, then increase the length and width of the curtain by 10-15 cm from the length and width of the window opening.
Take a note: before cutting the fabric, the fabric must be "shrunk" so that this does not happen when everything has already been cut out. For this, the fabric is washed, dried and ironed.
Also provide indents around the perimeter of 2 cm for the seams.
Step 3
Sew the resulting sections from the seamy side along the perimeter, leaving one side unstitched in width. Turn the sewn bag out of the way and iron all the seams.
Step 4
Now you need to fix the weighting agent, which can be used as a wooden plank or metal rod.
The weighting agent acts as a guy, thanks to which the curtain looks perfectly smooth and does not bristle to the sides.
The length of the plank should not exceed the width of the curtain. The weighting agent must be placed on the bottom of the resulting "bag" -curtain and sewn from above so that it does not roll off when the roller blinds are lifted.
Step 5
Attach the other end of the curtain to a pre-prepared wooden block using a stapler. The bar is completely covered with fabric so that it cannot be seen.
You can refuse the stapler and make a curtain with a fastener (hooks, zippers, rivets, Velcro), then the curtain can be easily changed to a new one or removed for washing.
Step 6
Preparing the garters. This is where your imagination works. They can be made from the same fabric as the curtains, or you can take a completely different fabric.
It can be chiffon or guipure ribbons with bows or lace braid, strips of fabric with stripes and patterns. The color can also vary: be in tone or, conversely, radically different, creating a spectacular contrast.
The length of the garter is equal to two lengths of the curtain. There will be two such garters: for the balanced retention of the fabric roller blind.
The garters must be thrown over the bar and fixed with a stapler or thread.
Step 7
Install the timber in the window opening or above the window.
As you can see from the master class, the creation of roller blinds does not require special abilities and skills. This activity will be enjoyable and beneficial.
