Understanding how to grow walnuts in cold climates

Frost-resistant walnut

For a long time, frost-resistant trees have been planted and raised by gardeners in Moscow. Also, the fruits were achieved on the Lenin Hills.

The enthusiastic people of the Moscow region have selected the most winter-hardy, and therefore early-growing forms of the nut. The Ideal variety is very famous. There are a lot of hybrids of a walnut variety with Manchu or no less common gray. What is known about these varieties?

• If there are lowlands with a minimum of groundwater, the nut will grow there too;
• Yields require fertilizer, lighting, and a suitable moisture level;
• No tree is planted near the house;
• Some other crops will take root near the tree, for example, currants and even plums;
• It is most easily propagated by seeds, although seedlings grow for a long time;
• If the tree grows in late spring, then it is less likely to be damaged by winter frosts;
• It is always better to give preference to local varieties, preferably even more northern ones;
• The fat content of the fruit does not give any guarantees, it should not be overly paid attention to;
• Shells that are too hard are not suitable for seed nuts;
• If the tree develops little, it must be pruned;
• Watering may vary, but one bucket is not enough anyway.

Here are the most modest recommendations. There are a lot of subtleties in growing a nut. It is not recommended to immediately cut off frozen branches. The Manchu variety withstands frosts best of all. When figuring out how to grow a walnut, one must remember that a number of frost-resistant varieties are sprinkled with snow for the winter.
