Is pelargonium grown from seeds?

Of course, it is more common to propagate geranium, which is also called pelargonium, by cuttings. But when planting a large number of plants for landscaping, it is still more profitable to use seeds. Pelargonium grown from seeds has a very attractive appearance, the plants are compact, bloom very abundantly. Moreover, the seeds, which are relatively expensive, have excellent germination capacity.

Pelargonium has large, densely coated seeds, from the moment of sowing to the beginning of flowering it takes no more than six months. sowing seeds can be done throughout the year, in winter, however, additional lighting will have to be applied. Experienced gardeners prefer to sow pelargonium in late February - early March, in which case the plants emerge with a sufficiently long daylight hours.

The soil for seedlings is prepared loose, light, moisture-permeable. You can cook it yourself using turf, peat and sand (2: 1: 1). The earth needs to be disinfected, pelargonium is susceptible to "black leg" disease. To speed up the germination of seeds, it is recommended to break their covering shell with sandpaper. Treated seeds will sprout in 7-10 days, otherwise the wait can take up to 3 months. You can also buy processed seeds in the store, they germinate a couple of weeks after sowing.

Pelargonium from seeds is not grown if this plant is hybrid - only vegetative reproduction can preserve the qualities of the plant. The seeds of such plants in subsequent generations will give plants similar to those of the mother.
