When to plant dahlias

Dahlias are unpretentious flowers and it is very easy to care for them. Probably, only novice gardeners or amateur gardeners do not know when to plant dahlias. These flowers are sensitive to frost, so for the winter, the tubers are dug up and stored in the basement until spring. You can buy tubers in early March and store them at home until planting. You can plant dahlias at a time when frosts are no longer expected, so there is no definite answer to the question of when to plant dahlias. Usually this is the end of May, beginning of June, although they can be planted at any time.

Dahlia are planted in two ways: tubers and seedlings. It is much easier and safer to plant these flowers in tubers.

Planting dahlia tubers

For planting, you need to select good, strong tubers that are not spoiled by rot and have not dried out. If there are affected areas, they must be cut off, and the cut must be disinfected with charcoal. Two weeks before planting, the tubers must be removed from the storage and horizontally placed in bags, which must be tied so that air is available to the tubers. The packages prepared in this way are removed in a bright and warm place. There is no need to moisturize them. Literally after a week, the bags need to be opened and the tubers should be sprinkled with water, and after another week they can be planted in the ground. The soil must be at least 10 ° C. When planting, care must be taken not to cover the formed buds with a thick layer of earth. If the tubers were previously divided into sections, then the bud is hidden under the ground by 5 cm.

Planting dahlia seedlings

Seedlings are planted a little later than the tubers and covered with a film so that the young sprouts do not freeze. Even if there are frosts and the tops of the seedlings freeze, it's okay. This is a kind of pinching, after which the dahlias will bloom better and more magnificently. In order to prepare the seedlings, in mid-March you need to get the root tubers and put them in bags. The same manipulations are carried out as when planting tubers. When the dahlias form powerful, at least 5-10 cm long shoots, they must be carefully broken off and planted in a sand-peat mixture. The soil with a sprout must be regularly moistened. Planting seedlings in May-June, depending on weather conditions.

A little advice for those who do not know how and when to plant dahlias. Before planting the tubers, they need to be lowered for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate. Seedlings or seeds are planted when the threat of recurrent cold weather has passed completely.
