MS polymer sealants
A newly emerged type of sealant that is rapidly gaining popularity due to its excellent properties. They combine the qualities of silicones and polyurethanes, reliably protecting against leakage, forming elastic and reliable joints.
VS polymers - excellent qualities for bathrooms and other wet areas
Properties and scope
Main advantage sealants based on MS polymers - in addition to the properties of the sealant, they still have a high adhesive ability, therefore their polymers are also called adhesive sealant. They have the following properties:
- Excellent adhesion to all building materials without the need for primers.
- Solvent free, safe and virtually odorless.
- They dry quickly and harden even at sub-zero temperatures (only slower).
- When dry they do not harden, they remain elastic (elasticity range 25%).
- After drying, you can paint.
- They do not crack or change color under the influence of the sun.
- Waterproof, can be used in fresh and salt water.
-
When applied, they do not spread, a neat seam is easily formed on vertical and horizontal, inclined surfaces.
Excellent properties. There are also disadvantages. The first is a high price, but it is justified, since the seam does not crack and does not leak for a long time. The second - after a while, the surface of the white sealant may turn yellow. This does not affect the quality of the seam, but it looks ugly. You can remove yellowness by wiping the seam with refined gasoline. The third minus - after hardening, the composition is removed only mechanically. No solvents act on it.
Manufacturers and prices
Almost every major manufacturer has MS sealants, and they also have various additives that give special characteristics, so that you can choose exactly according to the situation and for a specific type of work.

Despite the fact that this type of sealant has appeared recently, the range is solid, since the combination of high adhesive ability and sealant properties is very convenient and the product is in demand.
The main advantage of MC sealants is elasticity after drying, tolerance of prolonged direct contact with water, and resistance to the growth of fungi and bacteria. Therefore, this type of sealant is used to seal the junction of the bathroom or shower stall with the wall. In the case of a shower cabin, it is also good because it does not slip when applied vertically.
Another positive point - most of the formulations have a pasty consistency, which lays down evenly, does not bubble.After application to the initial curing (skin formation), the applied sealant can be easily leveled to the desired shape.
Peculiarities
Previously, when there was no such product, it was possible to finish the seams only as a result of long and painstaking work. But the composition, giving a neutral reaction, turned out to be a real salvation. In addition to its practical value, the material is also useful with a zero hazard level for people, animals and plants.
This mixture has a dense structure and copes effectively with various tasks, such as:
- filling a crack or seam;
- repair and sealing of aquariums;
- increasing the tightness of individual sections of structures;
- prevention of external destructive influences, especially water.
High temperature sealants: purpose
In Russia, the operation of heating equipment is particularly active due to the often harsh climate and the long winter season. In the course of active use of the fireplace, stove and chimney, cracks and cracks may form through which smoke can enter the room. Also, cracks and cracks significantly reduce the tightness of the heater, increase fuel consumption and, in general, reduce the heating performance of fireplaces and stoves.
Cracks and cracks can appear both in the chimney and on the hearths themselves, as well as at the junctions of functional elements. At the same time, damage to the chimney itself can not only reduce the operating characteristics of the heating system, but also create fire hazardous situations. Therefore, if such defects are detected in both the heater and the smoke channel, it is necessary to urgently repair and seal cracks, holes and cracks. It is for this kind of repair work that high-temperature sealants are used. Also, sealants are used when carrying out installation work on the installation of heating and smoke extraction equipment.
How to choose a high quality composition
The quality criterion is the part of the fillers in the base. The more silicone filler, the more durable the adhesive.
The highest quality is considered to be 100% silicone sealant. It has low shrinkage, long service life and high mechanical properties. The cost is higher than other types. But there are others, of less quality. During the production process, additives are introduced into the composition that reduce the hermetic properties.
A composition with a small part of additives is also convenient to use, and its quality is slightly reduced. These include black 101 sealant, as well as Ceresit CS 25, which is used with increased moisture to prevent mold.
Ceresit CS 25 black
Definition of quality:
- If you weigh a standard tube of pure silicone sealant (310 ml), its weight will not exceed 340 g. If this figure is exceeded, then fillers have been added.
- If the cartridge is not labeled with the cure type, turn it upside down and squeeze. Acidic mixtures smell like vinegar.
- If a solvent is added to the composition, then when it is applied to polyethylene, the area under it will puff up and wrinkle. Having weighed the tube, the solvent cannot be determined, because it is not inferior in density to silicone.

Types of silicone-based sealants
Hermetic mixtures are divided into two types - two-component and one-component mixtures. Two-component are used in industry, including food. The second subgroup relates to construction and repair work.
One-component ones are divided by composition:
Acidic - basically contain acetic acid. They have an unpleasant characteristic odor, are versatile in use and are financially beneficial. Marked on the cartridge with the letter A.
- Neutral - based on alcohol or ketoxime. Suitable for use with a variety of surfaces. An example is Ceresit CS.
- Alkaline - amines are used for the manufacture. Designed for non-ferrous metals, marble and cementitious materials.
Silicone sealants are also divided by purpose. Ceresit CS 25 is an excellent sanitary sealant. Designed for sealing water pipe connections, sealing plumbing fixtures in the bathroom.
A separate subtype is considered to be an adhesive sealant such as Kim Tec 101. It is used for working with glass substrates (aquariums, window panes, etc.). This silicone is resistant to external factors and can withstand a lot of weight.
Applying sealant to the surface
One-component silicone sealants have a variety of color variations. Ceresit 25 and Kim Tec 101 are usually clear or white, but grout is available in a variety of colors, including black.
Features of choice
In order to accurately choose a product, it is necessary to understand exactly where this material will be used, as well as what properties, basic or additional, it should have.
The main factors for the correct determination of the characteristics that form the final result - a successful purchase:
you need to determine the color scheme - for sealing joints in the flooring, you can use dark colors, for example, gray;
special attention should be paid to the fact that it is better to use a fire-resistant sealant ("Silotherm") for seams of surfaces with an increased risk of fire;
if renovation is planned in the bathroom, the white color of the seal is ideal for this. In such rooms, due to humidity, fungus often multiplies, which causes mold to appear in the joints of the shower stall or other seams - use a sanitary type of product.
Saturated Compound Sealants
Henkel produces another silicone sealant, which differs in its characteristics and component components. It is called the Moment Herment and includes series for both domestic and professional use. Differs in the addition to the composition of fungicides - substances with anti-mold properties. The volume of the tube is 85, 280, 310 and 600 ml. Divided into universal (with vinegar) and neutral (without it). In addition, it includes the series:
- white Premium - consists of silicone (acetoxy), has a higher resistance to moisture;
- high-temperature - made on the basis of acetoxy and sodium silicate, it is oil- and petrol-resistant, high temperature resistance (withstands heating up to +315 ° C), after hardening it retains elasticity. Color - red-brown;
- sanitary - used for glazing shower rooms, as glue for repairing sinks, bathtubs. The color is white and transparent, hardens “to low tide” in 20 minutes, contains acid. Not used for structures made of natural stone and rusty surfaces;
- for an aquarium - ideal for sealing painted plastic and glass structures, subject to constant vibration, moisture resistant, neutral. Considering the specificity of the scope of application, the color sealant transparent only.
Also, the Moment Herment series includes gray polyurethane-based sealants (PL-20 and PH-40) with a volume of 310 ml. These types are used for grouting highly mobile joints, act as glue for tiles. Remains resistant to acids and salt solutions, cleaning agents and water. Disadvantage: they fade under the influence of direct sunlight, lose their elasticity over time.
Sealing process
The video below contains summarizing information about silicone and acrylic adhesive sealants, which will make it possible to make a comparative characteristic of these compounds, to clarify for which surfaces to use them. and what to avoid interacting with.
Despite the listed variety of models and their minor disadvantages, we highlight the advantages that are common for one-component silicone sealants, including those from the Moment series:
- high adhesion to any materials;
- water resistance and elasticity;
- resistance to aggressive environments, mold, mildew, UV rays and sudden temperature changes (operating range from -60 to +350 ° C);
- used as glue or for sealing joints, increasing their aesthetic appeal, eliminating drafts;
- strength, abrasion resistance, which allows them to be used on moving parts.
Thanks to these features and the constant improvement of Henkel products, the Moment brand has become recognizable all over the world, and when the phrase silicone sealant is used, a chain of associations immediately arises: quality, reliability, durability. If you add to this the affordable price, then the benefits of Henkel products become even more pronounced.
However, do not forget about your health and do not try to save money. Choose a neutral, acid-free sealant, although it is more expensive
Follow the instructions for ventilating the premises and do not forget about other precautions
Construction is an area where there are many special tools and materials that are used in a limited range of tasks. But there is such a universal tool that can be used in a huge number of operations - and this is a silicone sealant.
The assortment of silicone is large
How to choose
Sealant is a simple and affordable grout that is used to fill cracks, increasing tightness. Used independently at home, by professionals and in industry.
The scope is very wide
To choose a composition, you need to know where it will be applied, what it is compatible with, take into account the duration of the functions, resistance to external factors and the color of the processed parts.
Sealants are divided into acrylic, polyurethane and silicone. A different grout is used for each surface, depending on temperature differences in the room and other factors.
Kim Tec sealant is used as an insulator for windows, doors, aquariums, etc. Its task is to prevent moisture, dust and foreign odors from getting inside. The main advantage is the ability to use it indoors and outdoors for household work.
Black finish
Compatible with glass, wood, metals, enamel and ceramics. The clear glue will aid in the bonding of the aquarium and food surfaces. Silicone rubber is heat resistant and does not change when exposed to weather conditions.
Choosing quality
Package
This composition is sold in tubes, with a capacity of 280 to 310 ml, made for a pistol. Less common are aluminum tubes and file packs. The tube has a convenient “nozzle-syringe” for application, from which the solution comes out in a thin strip.
Before purchasing the composition, look at the packaging. It indicates how and under what conditions the substance is used. As for the color palette, the silicone sealant can be transparent, white, or colored (pink, yellow, brown, and so on). The color is selected based on the tone of the surface on which the substance is applied. The most popular is the transparent composition.
Tips for determining quality
To distinguish high quality material, take advantage of professional advice.
When weighing a 310 millimeter tube of sealant, the approximate weight should be about 340 grams. If the value is higher than the stated norm, there are many fillers in the composition.
Manufacturers use the letter "A" to denote acidic products. In the absence of marking, this composition can be distinguished by the pungent smell of vinegar.
If, when using sealant on a polyethylene surface, the product begins to lose its shape and inflates, this indicates the presence of a solvent. Unfortunately, it will not work to check this by weighing.
Types of sealants and their scope
Silicone sealant is a necessary, more precisely, an irreplaceable material when performing repair work.There are several types of such adhesives that are currently on the market for the construction industry. In appearance, one can distinguish:
Colorless sealant. It is used for the repair and installation of plumbing fixtures, at the junction of the shower cabin panels, at the junction between the bathroom and the wall. Due to the fact that the material is sufficiently waterproof, it is possible to avoid water leaks and mold. Also, a transparent sealant is used in the assembly of kitchen furniture.
Colored sealant. The surface treated with silicone does not paint well. To avoid imperfections, purchase a colored pigmented adhesive. In hardware stores, such products are presented in the following shades: white, red, black, yellow, beige, brown, etc.
Depending on the area of application, the following types of products are distinguished:
Bituminous sealant. Designed to eliminate cracks in the basement and foundation, in case of damage to the roof from tiles and slate. The area of application of the material is different. Surfaces and parts can be plastic, metal, wood. The main characteristics of the material: moisture resistant, resistant to temperature changes, creates high strength adhesion.
Universal sealant. Allows you to effortlessly fit glass tightly into wooden window frames. Due to the increased adhesion, it is possible to achieve a complete absence of drafts. The material for outdoor use should be chosen colorless so that it is not noticeable on the wood.
Aquarium silicone sealant. The composition should not be toxic. It has flexibility and elasticity, high adhesion, waterproof, does not spread, dries quickly. Can be applied for processing the joints of shower cabins, ceramic and glass products. This is the best option for an aquarium.
Sanitary Silicone Sealant... It is an indispensable universal assistant for the treatment of rooms with high humidity. Its main difference from other materials is that it contains antifungal and antibacterial substances.
Heat resistant sealant. It is used for industrial work, assembly of pumps, motors, furnaces, for sealing heating pipes, chimneys. Due to its composition, the material is used at temperatures from +300 to –50 ° С. At the same time, its elasticity and resilience are fully preserved. High-temperature sealant is indispensable for electrical work.
Among the most popular products are Moment and Soudal sealants. Both manufacturers have in their assortment different types of silicone-based adhesives for different purposes. So, for example, Moment Herment is intended for indoor and outdoor use. It is a quick-setting polyurethane foam.
For minor repairs, it is better to use Soudal silicone sealant. It is used for sealing double-glazed windows. Its main characteristics are: heat-resistant, resilient, UV-resistant.

Types of silicone sealants by component composition
The component composition of silicone sealants is quite complex. During manufacture, the following substances are added to it:
- silicone plasticizer - makes the material elastic;
- a vulcanizer that imparts viscosity to the material;
- silicone rubber (base);
- adhesion primer - ensures the adhesion of the material to the surface;
- amplifier - provides strength;
- filler that imparts color.
All silicone sealants are divided into 2 main groups:
- one-component - often used in construction and repair;
- two-component - used in the industrial field.
In turn, one-component silicone sealants, depending on the main component, are:
- Alkaline. Such sealants are included in the group of special purposes, and the main component is amines.
- Acidic. They are marked with the symbol "A" and belong to the group of silicone universal sealants with low cost. In the manufacture, acetic acid is taken as a basis, the smell of which can be felt when the mass hardens. The disadvantage of acidic silicone sealant is incompatibility with most non-ferrous metals, since it causes an accelerated corrosion process. It is also not recommended to use them with marble elements and with cement material containing alkaline particles.
-
Neutral. Ideally neutral silicone sealant is combined with surfaces made of any material due to the component composition, which is based on ketoxime or alcohol.
When choosing one or another type of sealant, pay attention to the special additives used in the manufacture. There are 4 main types of additives:
- Dyes. Colored pigments are added to the composition during manufacture, therefore, after drying, the material does not stain.
- Mechanical fillers. Provide excellent adhesion of the silicone compound to the treated surface.
- Natural extenders - reduce the viscosity of silicone.
- Fungicides - help kill mold and mildew.
Types of silicone sealants by appointment
The range of silicone sealants is quite extensive. The place and nature of the application of the material depends on what kind of choice you make.
According to their purpose, silicone sealants are:
