What is granite

What exactly is granite? This material is a mineral, a rock of magmatic origin. Granite slabs lie deep in the earth, not far from its surface.

The composition of this rock includes such well-known minerals as:

  • feldspar;
  • quartz;
  • mica.

Granite is incredibly hard and durable, which is why it is often used as a facing material and for the production of stair treads.

Material use options

Granite steps for stairs are often installed at the entrance to various offices and shops, and are also used as cladding of an extension to a residential building. In this case, the building takes on a rich and complete appearance.

Modern projects of private houses often involve the presence of such structures in them. Moreover, there are thousands of design options for such a staircase.

Different elements are used as materials for its decor:

  • Metallic;
  • Wooden;
  • Marble stairs.

Note!
The combination of a granite product with a patterned metal fence, which is installed between the steps and railings, also looks quite good.

From a financial point of view, this combination is very profitable, and besides, it looks just amazing.

Balusters from granite

Granite stairs are often designed with granite railings and railings. Visually, such a staircase structure looks monolithic.

And then such splendor does not need any additional decor. The only exceptions can be a luxurious carpet laid on the steps of the structure, as well as exquisite copper or brass carpet holders... (see also article Staircase rugs: walkway or overlay)

At the same time, granite balusters will only complete the design of the stone staircase. Thanks to the chiseled shapes of these elements of the product, the framing of the flight of the stairs looks even more solemn and ceremonial.

Granite overhead modules

Granite marches and balusters are made monolithic, that is, made of a whole array of stone slabs. Another option is granite linings. The price of full-weight granite steps is quite high, at the same time, lining-modules, carved from a granite layer, are distinguished by a completely affordable price level.

What are the finished overhead granite slabs-steps:

  • Installation of such step linings is carried out using thin sheets of material;
  • They are used for facing of rough concrete or brick treads of stairs;

Note!
A person who is not versed in this topic will think that in front of him is a monolithic flight of stairs.
But the construction of such a staircase will cost you much less.

  • Solid steps from granite with their own hands are cut in the form of a march of the structure and are endowed with the necessary parameters;
  • A variety of colors allows you to choose exactly the color scheme that will be more in harmony with the interior of the home.

Processing of steps from granite

Heat treatment can adversely affect the appearance of a natural stone porch. The surface of the product may lose its luster and tarnish.

Therefore, such treatment is used rather in the case of stairs located in a public building and on the street. The steps of the stairs in a private house need to be processed in a completely different way. For example, a granite staircase is covered with a carpet.

Anti-slip porch treatment
Anti-slip porch treatment

In the case of the porch, its granite steps are subject to anti-slip treatment.

Thus, the instructions for the processing of such a product provide:

  • heat treatment;
  • bush hammering or applying rough stripes to the surface of a granite slab using a special tool;
  • the use of plastic inserts that are mounted in specially made slots in the step monolith;
  • the use of anti-slip stickers on the polished stone surface.
  • applying to the place of the product where the human leg steps, a strip milled in the form of a flat cut;
  • making cuts with a 10 mm depth;
  • the use of patina that imitates aged stone.

Unique parameters of natural stone

Natural granite is distinguished by its excellent qualities:

  • high resistance to any atmospheric phenomenon... Therefore, an external staircase made of such material will not require special care or frequent repairs;
  • absolute moisture resistance... Therefore, he is not afraid of fungal organisms, even though he will regularly be washed by rains.

It is worth noting that monolithic granite tiles are used not only in the case of staircase construction.

It is often used to do:

  • kitchen work surface;
  • washbasins;
  • window sills;
  • and countertops.

At the same time, such material is much ahead of ceramic tiles, which are widely used in the design of kitchens. Frequent use of granite in kitchens once again confirms its moisture resistance, as well as resistance to external influences. Moreover, modern technologies have made it possible to create ideal figures with a variety of shape colors.

    If the top of the granite staircase is covered with a carpet, it would not go anywhere. Granite is slippery and cold. I also heard that he has a high level of radiation. So such a staircase is only suitable for public places.

    I wouldn't even advise putting granite stairs! They put it on the street: in winter it is always slippery, in summer after rain you can also fall, and they overpaid extra money !!! The material itself is good, but we didn't think about the consequences. I'm thinking about replacing it with a wooden one ..
