Stainless steel stairs: types of stairs

Shiny, stylish, powerful and slightly defiant, metal is arguably one of the best materials for personality.

This is probably why today a do-it-yourself stainless steel staircase is a popular attribute in almost every home.

Metal stairs - types of structures and the reasons for their popularity

Railings, handrails, stair railings, and even the stainless steel marches themselves are able to change any, even the simplest interior beyond recognition, adding special grace and style to it. In addition, strong welded metal structures do not rot like their wooden counterparts, and do not lose their attractiveness under the influence of sunlight, as plastic does quite quickly.

You can create anything from stainless steel (and even more). Now you will see for yourself!

Varieties of stainless steel staircases

The complexity of the manufacture and installation of a metal staircase, as well as its price are determined primarily by the structure of the march itself. What can it be?

Typically, stainless steel products are divided into three main types by design:

  • Marching. Typical staircase designs, the most common today. Most often they are mounted in spacious rooms with a standard layout.

Note!
The stainless steel staircase is characterized by maximum throughput (i.e. several people can climb it at once).
This nuance plays an important role when choosing a staircase for the hall or lobby.

If you need to combine the transition between levels by turning, then the structure of the stairs becomes more complicated. Such a turn can be carried out by recombining the marching directions or bending the span.

In the first case, the staircase changes its direction abruptly on a special platform. In the second, on the contrary, it happens smoothly due to the curved structure of the march.

The latter option will be more expensive, since the manufacturer will have to do additional operations with the metal. Fortunately, stainless steel allows you to create stringers and fences of any shape.

  • Spiral staircases made of stainless steel or, as they are also called, spiral-type marches. It is rational to use such structures in rooms with a small area.
However, they are also installed as a decorative delight, since they look very extraordinary and spectacular in their own way.

The manufacture of ladders from stainless steel of this type is most often carried out on special bending equipment with CNC (numerical control). As a result, the radius and pitch of the helix are precisely tailored to the pre-calculated design.

For information!
A staircase design can be ordered from any company that manufactures them.
Experts will develop all the drawings, but you will only need to provide the plans of the rooms between which the transition will be performed.

Such stairs do not have integral stringers or bearing parts, but are assembled from separate parts. The integrity and strength of the march is achieved by separate stainless steel segments and components connected to each other. Thanks to the sequential joining of parts, any turns are possible, and the ladder can wrap around a wall of any shape. (see also article Single-flight ladder: a simple solution)

The originality and fashionableness of such a staircase is really surprising! The view of the steps, smoothly bending around all the turns of the wall, makes an unforgettable impression. And it is even more interesting to walk along the steps, which seem to "soar" in space without visible supports - this effect is obtained with small differences in the level of the ridge structure. This proves once again that everything can be made of metal!

Attention!
In most cases, a staircase is created from a combination of several materials.
For example, the steps are made of glass, marble, granite or wood, and the supporting elements are made of stainless steel.

Why are metal ladders good?

Staircases made of stainless steel are an excellent style solution that allows you to emphasize the individuality of the property and the impeccable taste of its owner! The secret of success lies in the combination of external data and technical characteristics of this material, as well as in a competent combination of components. Let's name the main reasons why stainless steel stairs are so in demand today:

  1. Stainless steel is an alloy steel containing chromium... This is why it has excellent resistance to corrosion, weathering and chemical attack. Stairs made of such steel are not afraid of moisture, ultraviolet rays, temperatures, or high pressure.

Interesting to know!
Stainless steel recently celebrated its 100th anniversary! It was discovered by Harry Brearley in 1913 when he was experimenting with the properties of various types of alloys.
It was then that it was discovered that steel with a high chromium content gives excellent corrosion resistance.

  1. Any alloy steel products retain their physical characteristics and, importantly, their original appearance is at least 50 years old.! And this is without any protective coating. For products made from other materials, this is simply impossible. Plus, the instructions for use and care speaks of the undemandingness of stainless steel.
  2. Good value for money, quality and aesthetics... This is probably why more and more metal stairs are being replaced by structures made of other materials. Their efficiency is also expressed in the fact that they do not need additional finishing (application of anti-corrosion coating, paint, etc.).
  3. Of course, stainless steel is somewhat more expensive than simple mild steel, but you can create truly incredible creations from it.! Stairs can be either standard or exclusive - it all depends on the designer's imagination and the materials used for finishing.

  1. Continuing the previous point: stainless steel can be successfully combined with wood, glass, stone or with any other finishing materials and accessories... This will not spoil the overall style of the design idea in any way. Whether it is modern, hi-tech or even classic - a stainless steel staircase will fit into any interior and emphasize the aesthetics of the design idea.

Advice!
Such stairs look especially impressive in interiors made in a futuristic style.

Output

Agree, alloy steel is a great invention that formed the basis of many industries! That is, summing up everything that has been said above, this material makes it possible to realize a huge number of fantasies, in particular, to create reliable stairs of the most unusual shapes.
