How to prune grapes in spring and fall
It has become quite common that some plants that come from countries with a warm climate and mild non-frosty winters can be grown in central Russia and even in the Northwest. For example, grapes. There are varieties that are grown not only in closed greenhouses with artificial lighting and constant maintenance of a certain temperature, but also those that can be grown simply on the street, taking care of them the same way as in the homeland of grapes. The question of how to prune grapes in spring or autumn concerns all gardeners who grow or are still dreaming of growing grapes on their site.
There are no particular differences in how to prune grapes according to growing areas. As in the south, and much to the north, grapes are best pruned after fruiting, i.e. in the fall. Although in warm countries where grapes are grown on plantations, the timing of pruning is set depending on the needs for updating the vineyard. But in the northern regions of grape growing, pruning should be carried out before wintering, in order for it to better endure the cold, not freezing under a shelter, which must be arranged according to all the rules.
So, the grapes are pruned in the fall, but not immediately after the harvest is taken. It is necessary to wait for the onset of the coldest days before frost, but before their onset. It is in this case that the plant will save strength for spring growth. In autumn, the grapes are cut, leaving only the strongest shoots above the ground - 2-3 per bush, they are bent to the ground and covered for the winter. In the spring, shoots are cut, leaving only 3-4 buds above the ground. This method of pruning grapes is called the Guyot method.
Good luck!
