Bean pods - healthy legumes

A large number of berries, vegetables and legumes, including green beans, came to Russia from South and Central America. In our country, the cultivation of this legume began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Beans are tasty, nutritious, healthy, their protein composition is close to meat, thanks to which they can become a good substitute, which is appreciated by vegetarians. In addition, bean pods contain iron, phosphorus, calcium, B vitamins, provitamin A.

In Russia, bush and weaving types of green beans are cultivated. The culture is quite unpretentious, however, in order to get a good harvest, it is necessary to adhere to some planting and growing rules.

Beans are not too demanding on the soil, they prefer medium and light loams with moderate moisture. Beans do not like the neighborhood of weeds, they do not tolerate windy places. The culture is thermophilic, seed germination occurs at a temperature not lower than 20 ° C, at the same temperature regime it grows well. Regular watering promotes the formation of fleshy pods and a bountiful harvest.

Sowing beans is preferable in June, when the weather is warm. Dark beans are less demanding on heat, so they can be sown in May, after the end of the spring frost.

The seeds are soaked before planting. Sowing is carried out to a depth of no more than 5 cm, at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other and 30-40 cm between rows. Lay 2-3 beans in each hole, so that later you can choose the best sprout. Under favorable conditions, the first shoots will appear in two weeks, upon reaching 10 cm in height, the beans are spud.

Bean care includes: regular watering, loosening, weeding, fertilizing with potash and phosphorus fertilizers. For curly beans, you need to build supports.

The timing of fruiting depends on the variety; on average, the first bean pods can be harvested in 70-90 days.
