Unusual Seychelles Walnut
The Seychelles nut is considered one of the most amazing plants. If you suddenly find yourself under a Seychelles palm tree, be careful - the falling fruit can, if not kill, then cripple for sure, because its weight can reach up to 18 kg, and its radius is more than a meter. Due to this size, the nut is considered the largest seed in the world, and it takes 6 years to ripen.
In appearance, the Seychelles nut is very similar to a double coconut, which is why it is sometimes called that way, but the Seychelles nut has nothing to do with it.
Externally, the nut is covered with a brown smooth skin, the thickness of which is 2 cm. When it bursts and falls, a thick yellow-green shell is exposed, which consists of several lobes.
The fruit is edible - when it reaches its maximum size (about a year), its jelly-like pulp becomes "a delicacy of all the Seychelles." Although the nut tastes almost bland, it only sometimes slightly resembles a nut. Gradually, this jelly-like mass hardens and becomes like ivory.
The Seychelles nut has been a mystery for centuries. It drowns in water, as it is heavier than it, but when the outer rind falls off, it floats up. In ancient times, these floating nuts reached the shores of the Indian Ocean, where the locals did not know which kingdom they belong to - either to plants, or to minerals ... Nuts were attributed with miraculous abilities, considered a panacea for all diseases.
Palm trees begin to bear fruit only at the age of one hundred, and in order to grow it from a nut, it is necessary to plant seeds in the ground, drying them before that for 9 months ...
