Advantages and disadvantages
Scuba diving has a number of positive qualities that distinguish them from various other types of varnish compositions.
The main advantages are:
- Environmental friendliness. During use, such mixtures do not form toxic fumes, the release of which is hazardous to health.
- Short drying time. Unlike various other decorative coatings, such varnishes dry no more than 5 hours, which significantly saves time for repair work. Drying time for some species is only a couple of hours.
- Water-based varnishes are non-flammable and therefore offer a higher level of safety than, for example, paper finishes.
- The film formed by the varnish is not under strong tension. This provides more effective protection for the material.
- Aqueous formulations are durable.
- The material gives the surface additional aesthetics in appearance.
- The varnish has a high level of adhesion. It adheres perfectly to wooden surfaces, and during operation, chips and other disturbances in the structure of the coating do not form.
- Some types of water-based varnish have antiseptic properties, such as acrylic.
- Varnishes tolerate ultraviolet radiation well. When exposed to sunlight, they do not lose their appearance and protective functions.
The negative characteristics of water-based varnish include the following nuances:
- When applying it, you must observe a number of conditions regarding temperature and humidity - maintain a certain temperature (not less than 15 and not more than 20 C) and a humidity level in the range from 55 to 60%.
- The lacquer products of companies that have established themselves among users are quite expensive. For less than 1 liter of products, you will have to pay from 500 to 1000 rubles.
Compared to the many pluses of the material, we can say that the minuses are not so significant. All the positive qualities cover the shortcomings and form a weighty reason for purchasing such a varnish composition for finishing work.
Manufacturers
Many companies in Russia and abroad produce acrylic varnishes. In the modern market, products of various brands are offered to the attention of buyers. The most famous of them are presented below.
"Chief Technologist"
The line of paint and varnish materials "Chief Technologist" is produced by the enterprise from "NovBytKhim". A significant advantage of the manufacturer is its own research laboratory. Acrylate varnish for wood is suitable for indoor and outdoor work in the conditions of the average Russian climate. They can be used to coat already painted surfaces with water-borne paints.
The coating dries within 2 hours at room temperature and normal humidity (40-60%), it is consumed economically. Manufacturers recommend using paintwork materials at temperatures above 10 C. After applying each layer, it is necessary to let the previous one dry for an hour. In a closed state, the composition is stored for up to two years. The varnish is produced in buckets with packing of 0.5, 1, 2 and 10 kg. The color range is represented by 12 shades of the most popular tree species (maple, beech, pine and others).
VGT
VGT products receive good customer reviews. The two factories have their own laboratory and are engaged in the production of a wide range of materials. VGT varnish is intended for antiseptic surface treatment. Due to its composition, it penetrates deep into the base, ensuring the safety of the surface. It is applied in a thin layer in the form of an elastic film.
It can be applied with any tools, it has a low consumption (from 100 to 160 g / m2). The layer ceases to adhere within 1 hour. Complete drying takes place after 2 days. The composition is presented in 12 shades. It is recommended to apply it at a temperature of 7 degrees C and above, as well as sufficient air humidity. Stored under normal conditions for 24 months. Available in 0.9, 2.2 and 9 kg formats.
Tikkurila
Tikkurila is a well-known Finnish brand with a century and a half history. Since 1995 the company has been operating in Russia. The products have long gained popularity in the Russian and world market of paints and varnishes. Finnish quality makes Tikkurila varnishes popular in the construction market. Acrylic compounds are available in several versions.
There are glossy, matte, semi-glossy textures. The varieties have good protective properties, they are perfectly aligned when applied. Material consumption is moderate: from 8 to 14 sq. m / l. The brand varnish dries completely in 24 hours. On store shelves, it is sold in cans of 0.9, 2.7 and 9 liters. The only drawback of this product is the high price.
"Lacra"
The Lakra group of companies is one of the leaders in the Russian production of acrylic varnishes. Thanks to the manufacture of products in many European countries, their quality meets the highest standards. These compositions are applied with a brush or spray gun, they have a small consumption (from 8 to 14 sq. M / kg). The assortment includes all variants of textures, the products have an attractive price and are sold in two versions: 2.5 and 10 kg.
The hermetic product is stored for up to two years. Dries after application in 5 hours, hardness takes another 3 hours. The surface is completely ready for use after 7 days. The company's paint and varnish materials are distinguished by good performance characteristics.
Eurotex
Eurotex acrylic varnish for wood is a product of a Russian brand. It guarantees the protection of the array from various kinds of microorganisms, moisture and temperature fluctuations. These products can be used for outdoor and indoor use. Paintwork materials are packaged in packages of 0.9, 2.5 and 9 kg. The trademark acrylic varnish is economically consumed: 1 kg is enough to process 20 sq. m of surface.
The company's products receive a lot of positive feedback from buyers and craftsmen. Among other comments, the durability of the applied layer is noted.
Applying varnish to a wooden surface
The priority step prior to the application of acrylic varnish is a thorough surface treatment. From it, you need to remove everything that may interfere with the formation of an even layer. Processing takes place in several stages, the number of which depends on the characteristics of the base for painting:
- Cleaning. If the surface has already been varnished, then in addition to removing various dirt and grease stains, you will need to remove the previous layer of varnish. Before removing the old varnish, you need to make sure that the procedure does not damage the base (especially for parquet flooring, the boards of which can crack under intense exposure). Sometimes this can be simple enough; but in order to remove the old acrylic varnish, you will have to sweat a lot - it is better to stock up on abrasive paper and a sander.
- Grinding. In order to achieve a perfectly flat wooden base, you can use the "wet" method - moisten the wood and rub it hard with sandpaper. The primer and acrylic varnish then applied will form a "mirror-like" finish.
- Primer. The cleaned surface will need to be impregnated with a special compound that will eliminate all irregularities that are invisible to the eye.
If the finished composition seems too viscous, or wood processing is carried out for the first time, then you can dilute the acrylic varnish with water. However, it must be remembered that the maximum proportion of the solvent should not exceed 1/10 of the total mass. This composition is ideal for the first layer, but the second and third layers should already be undiluted.
Types of varnishes for painting
Among modern varnishes, there are: dammar, acrylic pistachio, pistachio and acrylic styrene. There is also retouch varnish, fixative varnish and fir varnish.
Dammarny varnish is the most common. Its advantages include low cost and the ability to protect the painting from sunlight. But, over time, such a varnish turns yellow, so it is not advisable to use it for paintings made in cold colors.
Perfect for them acrylic pistachio varnish. It differs in transparency and elasticity of the coating, does not grow cloudy over time, but it costs much more and is not so common.
Pistachio the varnish got its name due to the main ingredient - pistachio resin. It practically does not differ from the previous type of varnish, but it is even less common on sale.
Acrylic-styrene the varnish is recognized as the most effective. In addition to providing a thin, transparent coating, does not change color or yellow, it has good water resistance properties.
All these varnishes give glare, so if the painting is under bright light, there is reason to give preference to matte varnishes. In terms of properties, they do not differ from glossy ones, except that they are not able to increase the depth and color saturation.
When choosing a varnish, pay attention to the date of manufacture and expiration date. For most products, it is no more than six months, and for some varnishes, no more than three
If the varnish is expired, then it will stick even after drying, attracting dust and dirt, and can soften in high humidity.
Retouch varnishes should not be confused with topcoats, since they have the opposite principle of action: they are used to dissolve the paint layer in order to continue working on a dried painting. It is applied before starting work on the desired area. Once dry, the varnish is reapplied to the work area. Retouching varnish, slightly dissolving the top dry paint, enhances the adhesion of the new layer. Thus, a "protection" against fading is obtained.
Tip: a simple and effective way from the old masters - cutting a head of garlic - is an excellent substitute for retouching varnish.
Fixative varnish is used to fix drawings with a pencil, charcoal, pastels, etc. After drying, it forms a film that allows you to remove dust from the picture. In addition to physical "protection", this varnish allows you to preserve the richness of color.
Fir varnish is similar to dammar varnish, that is, it is also made from resins. Less common, as a dammar varnish, or "tee" (a mixture of thinner, varnish and linseed oil) is usually used.
Views
Depending on the composition, one-component and two-component varnishes are distinguished:
- In one-component versions, only acrylic acts as a binder, to which stabilizers, plasticizers, antiseptics are added. One-component compositions are strong enough, the resulting transparent layer will effectively protect the wood from burnout, damage, mechanical damage. However, a constant humid environment will significantly shorten the service life and make the varnish less durable. Therefore, one-component compositions are more often used in arts and crafts than for covering floors and other surfaces that are exposed to significant stress.
- In two-component formulations, the additional binder is polyurethane. Its addition increases the elasticity and strength of the final coating, resistance to mechanical stress, which makes it suitable for flooring in public places with a large influx of visitors.
Depending on the resulting decorative effect, the varnish can be matte, semi-matte, glossy:
- Semi-matt gives the surface a smooth surface without shine. After hardening, it has a silky texture, irregularities and defects on the surface become less noticeable.
- The product covered with glossy varnish acquires a bright shine. The use of a glossy composition requires an almost perfect surface, since all its disadvantages will appear. Parquet is often treated with a glossy varnish to obtain a "mirror effect". Parquet lacquer is inferior to matte in durability.
- Semi-matt combines the advantages and disadvantages of matte and glossy compositions. It will emphasize the texture of the product, give it a subtle shine and shimmer, but also show surface imperfections.
Peculiarities
Water-based varnish is a type of paint and varnish product that is distinguished primarily by environmental friendliness. It contains water and emulsifiers (acrylic or polyurethane). In addition, the composition may contain liquid polymers, antiseptics (in varnishes for wood processing), solvents (their share can be 5-15%), plasticizers (provide increased strength of the varnish layer). The presence of water is due to the peculiarity of the "setting" of the varnish. First of all, it is she who evaporates, then the film-forming component (solvent) and, last of all, the binder component (emulsifier).
- Acrylic compounds are considered more environmentally friendly, they do not create a film on the surface, so the bases can "breathe". In addition, acrylic varnishes are more flexible and therefore easier to apply. At the same time, these compositions do not demonstrate the same high strength indicators as polyurethane analogues. The optimal field of application of the product is in living quarters with standard environmental conditions.
- Highly durable polyurethane varnishes are used for surfaces in public and office buildings. They are suitable for substrates subject to high mechanical stress and prone to damage.
The base of the two-component varnish is acrylic, to which polyurethane is added to improve performance
An important feature of water-based varnishes is their freezing at subzero temperatures. After thawing, such a product is not suitable for use.
Preparation of the base
If you want to spend as little material as possible and get the most even surface, apply a primer to the base before using the varnish. It is recommended to opt for a tinted impregnation or a special water-based primer.
For a "mirror-like" finish, wet the substrate with water and sand before using the primer. This method is called "wet grinding". For best results, sand each coat (except the finish coat) with a fine sandpaper.
Acrylic varnish is quite suitable for renovating substrates that already have a layer of old paint on them. It will be necessary to pre-treat the surface with paint, using fine-grained sandpaper for this. Then you need to wash off the dirt with a soapy solution.
