Gasoline powered drill ADA Ground Drill 5: main characteristics

Gasoline powered drill ADA GroundDrill-5 is a compact unit equipped with a powerful two-stroke engine. Drilling is carried out using replaceable screw augers, providing a high speed of work. It can be used both for drilling holes with a diameter of up to 250 mm in the ground, and as an ice screw with the appropriate ADA Ice Drill for ice or any other with a suitable bore diameter.

On the front side motor-drill boxes are shown assembled with auger. On the left side, the name of the manufacturer is indicated - ADA Instruments, just below the name of the model - GroundDrill-5 - with a listing of its main features:

  • 2-stroke air-cooled engine;
  • 2 ways to set the position of the handles;
  • economical engine.

The main technical characteristics of the ADA GroundDrill-5 motor-drill are given in the table.

Power, W 1800 Fuel tank volume, l 1,2

Engine displacement, cubic cm 52 Auger connecting diameter 20 mm

The maximum drilling depth depends on the auger, the standard length of which usually does not exceed 1 meter. If it is necessary to drill wells to great depths, you can use extension rods specially designed for this purpose, which are attached between the drive and the auger. In practice, it turns out to lengthen the auger to a maximum of 1.5-2 meters. This is understandable: raising the motor-drill higher does not allow growth. And the beating of the auger only increases with an increase in the number of joints.

One of the devices that is not included in the standard delivery set of the motor-drill, but is strongly recommended for use, is the spring adapter ADA SPRING ADAPTER 20/20. It is especially necessary when working with soil, in which large tree roots, large stones and other hard objects often come across, causing the auger to jam.

ADA SPRING ADAPTER 20/20

The adapter is installed between the drive shaft and the auger and acts as a shock absorber to absorb shock loads on the gearbox and operator's hands. Such an adapter is attached by analogy with the auger extension.

Components and spare parts

As for the equipment upon purchase, each model is equipped with a set of tools with which the worker can assemble the gas drill, since the handles must be installed separately. You can also purchase other parts from the manufacturer, such as spring adapters, blades or extension cords. For the convenience of mixing the fuel mixture of gasoline and oil, there is a funnel.

When storing equipment in a specific place, you can place a canister next to it, which is also included in the final set. More expensive models have keys and adapters in the complete set, since there are various ways of fastening, in addition to the standard ones.

Removable augers and extensions ADA

In general, the ADA GroundDrill-5 motor drill has shown itself to be good. But the quality of Ada's own augers and extension cords at a fairly humane cost still leaves much to be desired.

Ada DRILL auger (diameter 200 mm, length 800 mm)

The low hardness of the blades of native augers and poorly sharpened knives are not immediately striking. At first, it may seem that the augers are drilled pretty well, especially sand and black soil, but as soon as you get to the clay - a stupor. There is a desire to push harder on the motor-drill, but doing this is highly discouraged in order to avoid engine damage - this has happened! So it is better to sharpen the knives at least with a grinder, and then the drill itself will twist into the clay, and you will only need to stop it in time so as not to dig too deep. The angle of sharpening of knives, by the way, was initially done incorrectly, but this can also be corrected with your own hands. And all this should be taken into account before starting work with the unit. Some buyers of Ada augers also complain about the quality of the welding of the pipes that make up the basis of the auger: the pipe bursts near the welding point of the adapter to the gearbox of the motor drill.

Of course, there are also augers made of thicker metal, as well as with replaceable knives. If the funds allow you not to save, then nothing prevents you from buying a higher-quality auger, since the connecting diameter for a motor-drill is standard - 20 mm, so augers from most manufacturers will do. Therefore, this item cannot be attributed to the disadvantages of the motor-drill itself, besides, the device itself can be bought without an auger. Although the Ada gas drill complete with auger is sometimes even cheaper during the period of various promotions - the main thing is, as they say, to be in the right place at the right time!

If we talk about cheaper ones, then you can pick up extension cords and Carver augers, for example. The landing gear is exactly like that of the ADA, they cost a little less, the quality is about the same.

Many manufacturers sin by painting the bore holes and shafts along with the main part of the auger. Therefore, new augers, extensions and adapters are put on the drive shaft of the gas drill and on top of each other only occasionally. You have to bore yourself.

The spring adapter Ada SPRING did not fit the supplied auger, so I had to work without it

As for the more expensive augers of the Ada company, in particular, intended for drilling frozen soil, they are completely "disposable", since the knives cannot be replaced - they are welded to the auger. Therefore, if you plan to drill ice or frozen ground quite often, it makes sense to choose something more expensive and immediately stock up on replaceable sets of knives.

Cotter pins from Ada that fix the auger with an extension, drill or spring adapter wear out very quickly, so it is advisable to stock up on them in advance. Instead of them, you can use 8 mm bolts, but not ordinary ones, but having increased hardness: otherwise they will bend and they will need to be knocked out of the holes. Just do not overdo it: if the bolts are harder than the auger itself, the auger will "eat up".

By the way, on the spring adapter ADA SPRING ADAPTER 20/20, judging by the feedback from users, it also periodically rips off the bolts. In addition, not any native auger can be put on it without problems. In some cases, the footprint has to be bored, which creates additional complications. Most likely, the painted seating surfaces are again to blame. So in this case, it may be advisable to buy a cheaper adapter for the same Carver.

Peculiarities

First of all, it is worth identifying the main features of ADA technology, and how it differs from products from other manufacturers.

  • High price segment. Not everyone will consider this feature an advantage, but rather take it for a disadvantage. But the price for the model is quite justified, given the other distinctive features of the hole drills. It should be added that some copies are subject to a discount in case of self-pickup.
  • Versatility. Most of the assortment representatives are designed for different types of work, which is possible due to suitable technical characteristics and design.Therefore, ADA motor-drills can be used in both the household and professional construction areas.
  • Diversity. A large number of models that can be purchased with or without auger. A whole series of units that differ from each other, different prices and areas of application - all this not only expands the model range, but also facilitates the choice of equipment for purchase.
  • The presence of reversible units. This feature is important for those who work with particularly difficult surfaces, where the presence of a reverse stroke allows you to get out of a difficult situation. Most manufacturers have either few of these models, or none at all.
  • Serial production of products. The ease of choosing the model you need is simplified due to the serial production of motor-drills. If the consumer liked a certain line of units due to its characteristics, special design or price, then there is an opportunity to study models from the same series.
