Reproduction methods
Many lovers of this indoor bamboo are often interested in the question of how to propagate bamboo at home. The most common types of indoor bamboo propagation include cuttings. But still, with dry air in the room, this dracaena does not feel very comfortable.
Apical cuttings
This plant is easy to propagate with cut tops. The top of the stem is cut about 15 cm down. Then the cutting is placed in a vessel with water, in which "Heteroauxin" is diluted, and after the roots appear, the cutting is planted in the ground.
Stem cuttings
Most often this method is used if the top of the plant has died. With the help of a sharp blade, the stem is divided into several parts, which can be rooted simply in water, with a stimulant dissolved in it.
You can plant cuttings in the ground for rooting, but this method is less effective.
Reproduction by knees
The perennial is propagated with the help of knees. Where there are thickenings on the knees, the plant may develop roots. Therefore, the stalk, on which there is a thickening, is immersed in water and constantly changed to keep it fresh. As soon as the roots appear, the young bamboo is planted in the ground.
Reproduction by dividing the roots
Mature indoor bamboo plants can be propagated by dividing the roots. To do this, when transplanting the plants, the largest stems are separated together with the roots and immediately planted in a separate pot or in a vessel with water. If the shoot is planted in a pot, it is watered abundantly for several days. A young plant does not like abundant lighting, so it should be placed on a window where there will be diffused light.
Seed propagation
If the store offers indoor bamboo seeds, you should not succumb to the temptation. Dracaena practically does not multiply by seeds, therefore buying seeds will be a simple waste of money, nerves and time. Bamboo will not grow from these seeds, and if something does, it will not. So it should be remembered that for a bamboo plant, seed propagation is unrealistic.
Proper bamboo care
Those who already own this wonderful plant claim that caring for it does not bring any particular difficulties. He needs to choose the right place of residence and create comfortable conditions, which in the conditions of an apartment will not be difficult. Timely watering and feeding will be good stimulants in the growth of bamboo.
Lighting
Indoor bamboo needs high-quality lighting, but it does not tolerate direct ultraviolet rays. The place in the apartment for him needs to be selected bright, but with darkening in the midday heat. The role of such temporary protection is easily handled by blinds left in a half-closed position, or tulle. When the day decreases (in the autumn-winter period), bamboo can be additionally illuminated with special phyto-lamps, but this is extremely rare. In most cases, a culture in a state of wintering is quite enough with what is.
Temperature
Indoor bamboo is a thermophilic plant. The cool environment instantly affects the decorative properties of the leaves - they darken and curl. The optimum temperature regime is + 22 ... + 32C. During wintering, its decrease is allowed, but not less than + 15C. In the summer, do not be afraid to take indoor bamboo out into the fresh air - it will do him good.
Humidity
The culture needs moderate humidity, but not waterlogging. When planting it in a new container, you need to take care of drainage, which will prevent stagnation of moisture in the soil and, as a result, root rot.In hot summer, in addition to regular watering, you can spray the foliage with settled water from a spray bottle. With the beginning of the heating season, the plant is moved away from heating and incandescent appliances, as they dry out the air.
Watering
During the hot summer months, indoor bamboo should be watered frequently and made sure that the soil does not dry out. In winter, as well as in the off-season (autumn - early spring), watering is reduced. A violation of the watering regime will be signaled by the yellowed tips of the leaves. It is worth noting that chlorine in running water can cause irreparable harm to the plant, therefore, settled water is used for irrigation, the best option is rainwater.
Fertilizers and feeding
Regular feeding gives good results in growing bamboo. Fertilize the soil twice a month. These can be liquid organic compounds, peat-based mixtures, or purchased complex mixtures of mineral supplements. Bamboo living in an aquatic environment also needs replenishment - it is supposed to be fed once a quarter.
How to curl a bamboo stem
Indoor bamboo is often attracted by the curved spiral shape of the trunk, which gives it a special originality. It is quite possible to form it at home by choosing one of several methods.
For example, having planted a young stalk in a container, it is completely covered with a box, having previously made a small "window" in it. The sprout will tend to grow towards the light flux penetrating through the hole, and the owners will only need to periodically rotate the structure, changing the angle of light supply. However, this process of forming a twisted stem lasts a long time, since one turn is obtained per year.
Another way is to curl the stem around the support, when the young sprout is fixed to it with a wire. When the curled sprout gets stronger, the structure is removed.
Features of growing indoor bamboo
- Given the increased requirements of this plant to air humidity, pots or vases with it should not be placed near sources of any kind of heating, especially electric.
- Comfortable for growing bamboo at home are considered 25 warm degrees, with a small temperature amplitude
- Like many other indoor plants, bamboo needs mineral fertilization. For the plant to be healthy, and the foliage juicy and lush, it is necessary to apply fertilizers containing phosphorus and nitrogen in the soil of the container where it grows in proportionate proportions.
- When bamboo is rooted or transplanted into fresh soil, it is possible to fertilize the plant only after its complete adaptation and obvious growth dynamics.
Bamboo is grown at home in different ways:
- in water;
- in a container with soil for dracaena;
- in a hydrogel.
The choice of the growing method remains with the grower, but you should immediately warn that varnishes and hydrogels are quite costly for the reason that they need to be replaced frequently due to the loss of their original properties. If you hold bamboo stalks in them for longer than their intended shelf life, the plant will grow wither.
Growing bamboo in a container with soil:
Most of all, for all the unpretentiousness to the quality of the soil, a soil mixture for dracaena is suitable for bamboo. The planting capacity should be spacious, taking into account the rapid growth of its root system. Young specimens of indoor bamboo should be transplanted into a larger pot annually, and matured ones - once every 3 years. Especially new plantings should be wet for 2 weeks. In the further care of them, do not allow the soil to dry out.
Growing bamboo in water:
It is believed that growing this tropical plant in water, in its natural habitat, gives the best result: lush greenery, a strong stem, but this method also requires knowledge and discipline in care:
Growing bamboo on a hydrogel
The process of planting in hydrogel granules is the same as when using decorative stones.Prepared stems are covered with granules, holding in an upright position, filled with prepared water. All further care consists in periodically adding water and applying the appropriate fertilizer once every six months. Transparent glass containers with growing bamboo in a hydrogel are very decorative.
Granules gradually change color in a transparent container over time, and bamboo roots can become bare, climbing up and dry out, which should not be allowed.
10 varieties for growing at home
The bamboo in the house does not grow to a huge size, but you need to prepare that you will have to control its growth by constant cutting. There are several types that are suitable for indoor breeding.
Fargesia
This is a bushy bamboo that takes root well in a container at home. It has edible shoots, so it is worth planting to sometimes surprise your friends by eating greenery, as panda bears do in China, where this plant comes from. There are many useful vitamins and minerals in the tissues of the shoots.
Saza
It grows in the Far East, in Japan, forming thickets in natural conditions. In the middle lane, it is grown indoors. Grows up to 2.5 meters.
Playblastus
There are several different species in this variety, including two-color variegated forms. It grows in warm areas, but is suitable for growing at home. The plant is not tall, therefore it is suitable for apartments with low ceilings.
Phyllostachis
The type of frost-resistant decorative bamboo, as a houseplant, can grow in winter on a balcony or closed loggia at low temperatures.
Ordinary
Growing ordinary bamboo at home is possible, but its height will constantly increase. For him, spans between stairs are chosen so that the plant has room to grow. Greenhouses and summer gardens are also great. Young shoots are eaten only in boiled form, since the shoots contain a toxic substance.
Dwarf
A variety of bamboo from Japan that is suitable for indoor cultivation. The height of the plant is no more than 1 meter, so you don't have to worry.
Arundinaria variegated
It is a palm-like houseplant thanks to its spreading thin leaves. In fact, this species refers to bamboo. Its uniqueness is that the plant blooms 33 years after planting.
Bloated bamboo
It is distinguished by thickening of the trunk in internodes, as well as a dense crown of thin leaves. Bloated indoor bamboo grows up to 3 meters, but does not bloom in a pot.
Lucky
Bamboo Lucky or spiral, when nursing at home, builds up foliage on the cube, but the trunks themselves are straight and bare. They are formed artificially, giving a spiral shape.
Dracaena Sander in the form of bamboo trunks
Dracaena Sander also has a smooth trunk and is similar to bamboo thickets in multiple plantings. They form real decorative compositions, since the trunk is soft and lends itself well to bending.
Growing in soil
The option for growing in the ground is more preferable for dracaena. Water is retained for a short time, which excludes root decay. Any soil mixture for indoor plants, consisting of clay turf, peat, humus, is suitable. There must be a drainage layer - 5-6 cm of sand, small pebbles. After planting in the ground, the plant is watered and placed in partial shade for several days.
Bamboo grown with a closed root system must be fertilized. In spring and autumn, use complex lawn mixtures saturated with nitrogen. The first flower transplant is carried out 2 years later. Then only the top layer of the earth is replaced. A shallow cut at the bottom of the stem will help stimulate root development.

Types and varieties of bamboo
Indoor Bamboo - is a miniature plant with an even or spiral bare trunk with shoots and leaf blades at the top. Bamboo leaves are hard and glossy. They have an elongated lanceolate shape and a light green tint. At home, the plant rarely blooms, but if this happens, it throws out a long arrow with white, pleasantly smelling inflorescences. Peduncles appear in the middle of summer.
Lucky bamboo is an evergreen semi-shrub perennial with a bare trunk, on top of which leafy shoots grow. The leaf plates are hard and dense, with a rich green tint. The plant blooms very rarely. Flowering time is in the middle of summer.
Common bamboo - bamboo of this species grows up to 20 meters in the wild. A thick, with knotted constrictions, the stem has a bright yellow tint with green stripes and rich green glossy, elastic leaf plates. The plant of this variety rarely blooms. There are no seeds. Propagated by bush division.
Bamboo plural - the natural habitat of plants in Nepal and the Himalayas. Bamboo of this species grows in the form of a shrub, consisting of individual plant trunks. This variety can grow up to 40 meters in length and has a thick, flexible and slightly knobby stem. The leaf plates are hard, glossy, dark green in color. In nature, the plant blooms extremely rarely and often dies after that.
Bamboo Bloated
This type of indoor plant can grow up to 300 centimeters in length. It has thick, knobby stems of a dark green shade with thin twigs and lush, green, glossy foliage. Bamboo does not bloom indoors, but it has excellent decorative properties.
Oldhamii Bamboo - This variety is known as giant bamboo. This plant is very popular in the USA. The stems of the bamboo are dark green in color, with a slight knotty. They are resilient and can reach heights of up to 40 meters. Bamboo branches are short with lush, green, glossy leaf plates. The plant blooms extremely rarely, since its flowering greatly depletes it and leads to death.
Bamboo Blumeana is a natural habitat of this plant in tropical Asia and the Philippines. This type of bamboo can be compared to a blackthorn. It can grow both as a shrub and as single individuals. The stems of the bamboo are thin, gray-green in color. They have branches with dark green foliage and small thorns. Thorny bamboo does not flower or bear fruit.
Tulda bamboo - native to Indochina, Tibet and Iraq. Its stems are used to make paper. Young bamboo trunks have a bright green hue, but after a few years, they become light gray and knobby. The trunk is covered with sparse thin branches with green foliage, which thicken closer to the top of the trunk. On rare occasions, bamboo throws out a flower arrow, which is covered with white, pleasant-smelling inflorescences. However, more often than not, flowering leads to the depletion of the plant and its possible death.
Bamboo Longispiculata is a plant native to Bangladesh and Australia. Bamboo reaches a height of 8 to 15 meters. The trunk of an evergreen plant is practically naked, knobby, of a rich green hue. A large number of shoots are formed closer to the top. They are covered with tough, sharp, green leafy plates. Only adult plants bloom, after which they often die.
Care features
It is not difficult to take care of this home flower. The simplest conditions can be ideal for this unusual plant.
Location
Caring for bamboo at home will be wrong if you put the pot in the wrong place. The bamboo plant pot must be placed in a sunny location. Good places in the house would be west or east windows. But the sun's rays can burn the leaves, so the window should be covered with a light transparent cloth. It scatters the sun's rays, but does not create shadows. From April to November, natural light is enough for the plant.
But from November to April, the plant continues to grow intensively, so it will lack natural light in the house. During this period, it is worth using special ultraviolet lamps and supplementing the bamboo. Such lamps should not be installed too close to the plant, otherwise the leaves may burn out. The lamp should be at a distance of 35-45 centimeters from the plant.
In a room with bamboo, a temperature of + 18-25 degrees should be maintained. Moreover, this temperature should be all year round. Of course, the plant will not die at a temperature of + 13-14 degrees. But at low temperatures and insufficient lighting, the leaves first turn yellow and then fall off. The plant begins to experience stress and soon dies.
Watering mode
Watering a houseplant bamboo is often worth it, because the plant loves important land. But watering is carried out in spring and summer. In winter, the plant may not be watered at all. For irrigation, melt or rainwater is used. Moreover, even rainwater contains substances harmful to bamboo. Therefore, rainwater should be collected and defended for several days.
Then the water is carefully drained from the container, being careful not to drain the liquid from the bottom.
Watering indoor bamboo can be done through the bottom of the pot. The bamboo pot should have holes in the bottom. To do this, the pot is placed in a container of water and left for 3-4 hours. Then the pot is removed from the water and placed in its permanent place. With this method of watering, the roots independently absorb moisture in the amount that they need.
Spraying on bamboo is not carried out. In the process of spraying, droplets settle on the surface of the plant, which do not evaporate for a long time and provoke rotting. But the plant needs moist air. How can this be achieved? You just need to put a small container of water next to the pot. The container should have a wide neck, so evaporation will be more intense.
If the substrate began to exude a putrid odor, then watering is immediately stopped until the soil is completely dry. This smell indicates the multiplication of putrefactive microorganisms, which will very soon damage the roots and the entire plant.
Fertilizers and feeding
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk are signs of a lack of fertilizer. In order for home bamboo to please with green foliage and a healthy trunk throughout the entire growth period, it should be regularly applied with mineral fertilizers.
In winter, the plant is not fertilized. In the spring, in March, the plant begins an intensive growth of lateral shoots, which can later be used for reproduction. Therefore, it is worth making the first feeding. You can use special fertilizers for dracaena, lawns or universal formulations.
You can use simpler feeding, for example, chicken and cow dung, wood ash. These dressings contain all the necessary micro and macro elements. It is these additional elements that will help make the leaves more hardy, and the stem more durable. Before making dry dressings, they must be dissolved and insisted in water. Infusion is carried out for several days. Then the resulting solution is poured over the flower.
In the middle of summer, it is worth feeding the bamboo with fertilizer containing nitrogen, potassium and a small amount of phosphorus.
In the fall, it is worth adding phosphorus and potassium, nitrogen cannot be added during this period. You can spread wood ash around the stem, and then with each watering the plant will receive a little fertilizer.
An exception may be feeding after transplantation. During the first three weeks after transplanting, the plant must be given the opportunity to acclimate to new conditions and it has enough nutrients contained in the soil.
Plant features
The flower, which is commonly called bamboo in everyday life, actually belongs to the Dracaena family. It is similar in appearance to real wild-growing bamboo: a dense knotty trunk and narrow long leaves. Their condition indicates the health of the plant. Healthy bamboo has a deep green color, the leaves are shiny, do not fall off or turn yellow.
The hollow, thick stem can be twisted to create whimsical compositions. For this feature, the flower is very much appreciated by florists and interior decorators. With unlimited growth, bamboo reaches a height of about 1 meter.
ATTENTION! In indoor conditions, the plant does not bloom.
Home bamboo is especially loved by Feng Shui fans. It is believed that it creates a favorable atmosphere in the room, attracts good luck, pacifies and soothes. Feng Shui experts believe that twisted stems are especially useful, as well as compositions of 7 plants combined together (intertwined or tied). They guarantee health, prosperity and well-being to their owner.
Requirements for growing bamboo at home
Bamboo is called a lucky plant. It is a pleasure to grow it at home, it is unpretentious, it can live in a vase of water or in a pot of soil. The stems can be twisted into a spiral and make compositions for the decor of the room. But for the plant to be healthy, there are some care features.
Lighting and location
The natural habitat of bamboo is the rainforest, and there the sun's rays are scattered. Therefore, it is better to place the plant on the windowsills on the east side and it is desirable that there is a light curtain on the window, the bright sun burns the leaves and they can turn yellow. But bamboo can suffer from a lack of light, so if you want to place it in a dark corner or in the bathroom, provide additional lighting, for example, with fluorescent lamps.
Temperature regime
Indoor bamboo is thermophilic, tolerates heat up to +30 ° C without any consequences, but a comfortable mode from 18 to 25 degrees with a plus. The plant loves fresh, clean air, so ventilation will benefit it.
Air humidity
And here bamboo is not whimsical, but it is better to avoid dry air and do not place the plant near heating devices. The leaves should be wiped off dust more often and have a warm shower.
Reproduction of pogonaterum
Indoor bamboo is surprisingly easy to propagate. Like all grasses, it reproduces best by separating turf. But in room culture, this process is somewhat more complicated, since the plant reacts very poorly to root damage and requires extreme care during this procedure. Any trauma to the rhizome results in the appearance of unattractive brown spots on the leaves, which cannot be eliminated. Divide the bushes in the spring, carefully manually dividing them into 2-3 parts and trying to cause minimal damage to the roots. If the manual procedure leads to serious injuries, destruction of the earthen coma, too much damage to the roots, then it is better to cut the bush than to resort to the classical method. After planting the plots as independent plants, it is necessary for them to halve the humidity of the air, still not allowing the substrate to dry out, but avoiding excessive moisture for the quickest possible healing of lesions on the rhizome. It is also necessary to maximize the humidity of the air and place the separated pogonaterums in partial shade until growth resumes.
This plant can also be propagated by grafting, cutting the apical shoots and, after treatment with a growth accelerator, rooting in a substrate typical of the pogonaterum at an air temperature of at least 25 degrees and very high humidity (under a hood).
Features of growing bamboo outdoors
Cold-resistant bamboo species grow in mid-latitudes, tolerate frosts down to -20 ° C. Well-lit areas protected from the wind are chosen for the plant on the site. In winter, snow should linger on the plantings, if the wind blows it out, the bamboo will freeze.
The plant is transplanted from April to June, in the phase of active root growth. The soil is needed loose, light. On clayey, heavy scanty soils, bamboo will not take root, it will begin to wither, and will quickly die. The soil is required with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. It is advisable to use a nutrient soil with a high humus content.
Planting bamboo outdoors
It is recommended to prepare pits for spring planting in the fall. They are made deep, up to 40 cm. The soil extracted from the hole is mixed with humus in a 1: 1 ratio. For the winter, the planting hole is filled only to 1/3 of the depth, making a small tubercle. The rest of the soil is placed next to the hole. If it is not possible to prepare a place for planting in the fall, before planting the bamboo, the hole is shed well, left for 3-4 days, and the earth is allowed to settle.
Before planting, the bamboo is specially prepared: the earthen lump of the plant is well saturated with water, completely immersing the pot in water. Leave for at least 2 hours. After that, the plant is carefully removed in a tilted position so as not to damage the roots. The latter are straightened, bamboo is planted, covered with soil. Then spilled with water. After planting, the soil must be compacted, pressed with feet so that there are no voids, only the upper 5 cm is left loose.
Outdoor bamboo care
The agrotechnology of growing bamboo is reduced to regular watering, feeding, thinning so that the shoots do not interfere with each other. It is worth talking about each point in more detail.
Watering
After planting, the cuttings need abundant watering for the first few weeks. Only with frequent precipitation, the soil is not additionally moistened. To preserve moisture, the soil around the young seedlings is sprinkled with dried humus, the earth warms up better. If it is not possible to often water young plants, the soil around them is covered with a dark film, when it heats up, the water begins to rise from the depth, goes to the roots. In summer, with abundant dew, during rains, watering is reduced. Adult plants are moistened no more than 2 times a week (taking into account precipitation). With a close occurrence of groundwater, it is necessary to individually approach the irrigation regime. When the water stagnates, the leaves will begin to turn yellow. Between watering, it is advisable to regularly loosen the soil to a depth of 5 cm.
Pruning
Sanitary spring pruning involves removing damaged, twisted, frozen stems. Dense plantings are thinned out so that the sun penetrates into the depths. When cutting, the stem is removed at ground level without leaving a stump, or along the knot. The stem cut off above the internode begins to grow back, it will have to be cut again. In autumn, no more than ¼ of the shoots are removed, the cut stems are usually left to winter on plantings, they are used to create winter shelters that protect from frost.
Top dressing
In the spring, organic matter is introduced to stimulate active growth. In addition to nitrogen fertilizers, mineral fertilizers are used, the optimal ratio of phosphates, nitrogen, potassium is 3: 4: 2. In autumn, the amount of phosphorus is increased (4: 4: 2). The earth is loosened, dry granules are embedded in the soil to a depth of 3 cm, top dressing is applied at the rate of 1 tablespoon (standard box) per 1 square meter.
Wintering
To preserve the roots in frosts in areas with little snow, the trunk circle is covered with mulch with a layer of 5 to 10 cm.For these purposes, use dried wood shavings, hay or dry grass. Some gardeners cover bamboo with dry leaves. In this case, it is advisable to first treat them with insecticides. For snow protection, dry branches are used, they are stuck into the ground around the plantings.
Types and varieties
Indoor bamboo is a miniature plant. It is grown at home in pots with soil or special transparent containers, covered with pebbles and filled with water. Bamboo maintenance is minimal. The plant requires lighting, watering and periodic feeding. All varieties are united by a hollow stem. The various types are classified in size and are divided into the following groups:
- Low. Plants grow up to 1 meter. Popular varieties - "Golden Lily", "Tsuboi";
- Average. Reach 3.5 meters in height. Beautiful varieties - "Shiroshima", "Mexican weeping";
- High. A rarity for interiors, as they stretch up to 6 meters. Bright representatives of the group, similar to giants, are "Tropical Black", "Monastyrsky".
When choosing a variety, you must clearly understand the purpose of planting. It is necessary to take into account the height of the plant and how it will look, the shape of the leaves, the type of root system. For some species, a solitary existence is more suitable, while others feel better in groups.
Garden bamboo: species diversity
How to grow bamboo? The answer to this question depends on the type of plant chosen for cultivation. There are varieties of garden and home bamboo. In the first case, we are talking about straight-stemmed hard or herbaceous plants that are resistant to cold. Such bamboo is grown in the conditions of the domestic climate.
The most popular varieties grown outdoors in our country are:
- Saza. The plant produces shoots 30-250 cm long. The leaves are oval wide. They are bright green in summer and spring. In autumn, the leaves dry out along the edges, giving the plant a variegated color.
- Fargesia. A mountainous Chinese species that is frost-resistant. The bushes have many shoots from 50 cm in length. Leaves 10 cm long are colored bright green, have an elongated shape with a sharp tip. By autumn, the foliage takes on a yellowish tint.
- Phyllostachis. Stems are flattened, have a grooved surface. Shoots can be colored yellow, green, black or bluish. The internodes are relatively short. Shoots reach a height of 5.5 m. Green leaves grow on them. The species prefers to grow in more southern regions.
- Pleioblastus. The species is highly decorative. Low-growing bamboo, brought from China and Japan, is frost-resistant. This species is shade-tolerant, but variegated varieties are best planted in sunlit areas.
- Ordinary. Herbaceous plant with stiff woody stems, painted with a bright yellow or green tint. Many bright green leaves grow on the shoots. Their surface is slightly pubescent. The plant reaches a height of 10-20 m. Their thickness is 4-10 cm.
How to grow bamboo outdoors? There is a simple technique. If you choose the right variety that will correspond to the climatic conditions in a given area, this procedure will not cause any particular difficulties.
Species variety of decorative bamboo
Indoor bamboo is an ornamental plant that is grown in pots. It decorates the interior in different rooms. It is worth noting that flower growers often call bamboo an ornamental plant, which does not belong to this type of plant. This is Dracaena Sander. Its name in English sounds like "bamboo of happiness". Outwardly, this type of dracaena really looks like this plant.
Dracaena Sander looks like a small plant, the stems of which can be intricately twisted. It is this feature that designers use when creating decorative compositions. They are most often grown without soil. For cultivation, water or hydrogel is used. Although some growers still use a substrate.
However, there are varieties that can still be attributed to the genus of bamboo. It is quite possible to grow them at home. Indoor bamboo are the following varieties:
- Forchuna variegated variegated flower.
- The multicolored flower is golden. The height of the bush is 70 cm.
- Dwarf multiflower. Grows up to 45 cm in height.
- Kuril bamboo (Kuril saza). Reaches a height of 30 to 100 cm.
- Arundinaria Muriel. The height of the trunks of a light yellow shade reaches 3 m.
- Arundinaria is variegated. Differs in the presence of creamy green leaves. The height of the shoots is 1 m.
