Date palm at home care and maintenance
The date loves bright sunlight and needs shading only in the midday summer heat. It is best to place small young plants on the windowsills of the southern and southeastern windows, larger and adult plants - next to such windows.
For uniform growth and development of the crown of a palm tree, it is necessary to turn it around its axis from time to time. In the summer, the plant will respond well to being kept outdoors in the garden or on the balcony, but if this cannot be done, then the room should be regularly ventilated.
If the autumn-winter days did not please with a sufficient amount of sunlight, then in the spring the plant must be gradually accustomed to the direct rays of the sun in order to avoid burning the foliage. The same is done with a palm tree just brought from the store.
In winter, it is advisable to illuminate the date using fluorescent lamps. With insufficient lighting, palm leaves begin to stretch and sag down, losing their decorative effect.
In the spring-summer period, when the date grows, it needs to be kept in conditions of moderate temperatures from 20 to 25 degrees. These tropical beauties also love higher temperatures up to 28 degrees Celsius, but high humidity is also needed, otherwise the tips of the leaves of the plant will begin to dry.
In winter, dates have a dormant period and need a temperature in the range of 15-18 degrees. The Robelena date is more thermophilic and the optimal winter temperature for it is from 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.
The Canary date can spend the winter at temperatures from 8 to 10 degrees, and in adulthood, with a formed trunk, it suffers a short-term decrease to 5 degrees below zero. Palm trees do not like this kind of stagnation of air. It is necessary to ensure regular ventilation of the room, while protecting the plants from drafts.
Seating in separate pots
As it grows and develops, the date becomes cramped in the pot. How to replant a date palm and when to do it?
The first transplant occurs when the leaf of the sprout has grown to 4 cm. The second transplant is carried out when the plant reaches 15 cm in height.
Since the date palm does not tolerate transplanting well, it is advisable to do this only if necessary. The signal for transplanting will serve as a clear visibility of the roots in the drainage holes of the pot.
Young plants grow quickly and replanting is required annually. Before the procedure, moisten the soil ball well to make it easier to transfer it from the pot.
Another method of transplanting a palm tree is not suitable: it has a very fragile root system. The pot is selected 3-4 cm higher than the previous one. A palm tree with a lump of soil is neatly placed in a pot, fresh soil is evenly poured into the voids of the container.
Important! Mature date palms are replanted every three years, otherwise it is recommended to change the topsoil.
The date palm is a spectacular ornamental plant, it only saddens that its reproduction at home is possible only by seed-seeds. Although in nature it reproduces well by root shoots. And yet a green tropical tree in the house, especially in the cold winter period, greatly brightens up the expectation of warmth and summer.
Date palm pests and diseases
Insect pests
Most often, if the conditions of detention are violated, the date palm suffers from spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. The best way to control pests is to correct grooming mistakes. It is best to remove insects and traces of their vital activity that destroy the plant by mechanical means, wiping the leaves of the date palm with a soap and vodka solution (15 g of liquid soap, any dishwashing detergent or a teaspoon of grated solid soap dissolved in warm water, dilute in a liter of warm water and add to solution two tablespoons of vodka).
If the number does not pass, after a week the processing of the leaves must be repeated, just do not forget to protect the soil in the pot from soap getting into it.In case of severe pest infestation, you will have to resort to treating the leaves of the date palm with insecticides, and the best of them is actellic.
Of the diseases of the date palm, spots are known that disfigure the leaf plate, and pink rot, which affects not only the leaves, but sometimes the stem, and causes them to rot. Fortunately, only weak and diseased plants are susceptible to infection with these diseases, so the key to the health of the date palm is your compliance with the rules for caring for it. If trouble happened and the plant got sick, double-treat the palm with a fungicide containing mankozeb and methyl thiophanate, observing a weekly interval between sessions.
The date palm dries
Sometimes the date palm leaves dry from the tips, and this is a clear indication that the room where the plant is located has too low air humidity at a normal rate of 50%. This is not so much, and there are more than enough ways to increase the humidity of the air to the required value, so do not be lazy to spray and wash the leaves, otherwise the palm tree will lose its decorative effect, and it will be a pity for wasted time and effort. Remember that the date palm dries up only with a careless owner.
Date palm turns yellow
If you have not changed your attitude to caring for a palm tree in time and have not resolved the issue of supplying the plant with moisture at all levels, the next signal of a water imbalance after dry tips is yellowing date palm leaves. This means that you not only irregularly spray the leaves of the plant, but also forget to water it, allowing the earthen coma in the pot to dry out. If you don't have enough time to take care of the plant, think, maybe it would be better to give the date palm to someone who takes the time to take care of it?
Date palm leaves darken
When the soil in a pot with a date palm undergoes chronic waterlogging, the leaves of the plant gradually darken, turning from green to brown, the trunk becomes soft, and the smell of rot is felt from the plant. As soon as you notice this, stop watering the palm tree, remove it from the pot and inspect the roots: if they become dark, soft and watery, the plant has already died, but if there are still living ones among the rotten roots, then it makes sense to cut off the dead roots by sprinkling the cuts with crushed charcoal, and transplant the date palm into fresh soil.
Date palm does not grow
As we already wrote, the temperature in the room where the palm tree is located should not drop below 12 ºC in winter. At other times of the year, the temperature should not be lower than 18-20 ºC, because root growth stops at a temperature of 16-17 ºC, which means that root activity slows down and the plant is not able to absorb nutrients, which ultimately leads to cessation of growth. In addition, there is a bias: the roots are able to assimilate some substances, while others cannot, and a deficiency of certain microelements occurs.
The reason for stopping the growth of the date palm can also be a too high level of soil acidity, which causes a lack of manganese and iron, therefore it is so important to observe the correct temperature regime and maintain soil acidity within the pH range below seven units. In order not to lose a tree grown from a bone, on which a lot of time and expectations have been spent, you just need to follow the rules for growing a plant, especially since there is nothing super complicated in them, and the decorative qualities of the date palm are definitely worth the effort

Types of date palm for indoor culture
At home, only one species was previously grown:
The palm date (Phoenix dactylifera) is a real date palm, a typical species of the genus, widespread in the oases of Western Asia, the Arabian Peninsula and the Sahara deserts, as well as in the Canary Islands. The trunk is vertical, often covered with remnants of dead leaf stalks, it grows to a height of 15-26 m, some even up to 30 m.
The leaves are large, up to 6 m long, grouped in a bunch at the top of the trunk. Flowers are wind-pollinated, unisexual, in panicle inflorescences. Fruits are elongated drupes about 8 cm and up to 4 cm wide. They do not lose their taste even at 14 degrees below zero.
Finger dates
Currently, other, more decorative types are used in the design of premises:
Canary date (P. canariensis) - native to the Canary Islands, but naturalized throughout the subtropical belt of the planet and now grows from the northern regions of France to the southern Chilean provinces. The tree reaches a height of 10 to 40 m. Date leaves are huge, complex-pinnate, reach 4-6 m in length and consist of 80-100 fragments on either side of the main axis. Fruits are orange oblong berries with large seeds.
Canary date
The Roebelen date (P. roebelenii) is a popular houseplant native to Laos. It reaches 2-3 m in height, which is why a dwarf date palm is often called among flower growers. It grows into several trunks, each of which bends gracefully in an arc from the center of the bush. The leaves are pinnately-separate, grayish-green in color, pubescent below, from 60 to 120 cm long, up to 100 lobules 15-25 cm long and 1 cm wide are formed on one petiole.The flowers are small, sunny yellow, form inflorescences 45 cm long. The fruits are drupes with a thin layer of pulp.
Date Robelena
Forest date (P. sylvestris) - also known as the silver date palm. It grows in the south of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma and other South Asian countries. It can grow upwards from 4 to 15 m. The trunk is not thick in a circle - up to 40 cm. The foliage about 3 meters long forms a lush crown up to 10 m in diameter and can consist of 100 leaves. Inflorescences of small white flowers droop downwards, then forming large inflorescences with purple-red berries, which are used to make jelly and wine. The juice from the trunks of the palm tree is drunk fresh or made from it punch or boiled to produce unrefined sugar.
Diseases and pests of the date palm
Violations of the conditions of detention and rules for care often lead to the appearance of a scale insect, a mealybug and a spider mite on the plant. If the leaves of a palm tree stop growing, dry, curl, darken and plaques appear on them, then the date suffers from pests. It is recommended to regularly inspect the leaves and, when insects first appear on them, spray them with a garlic solution or wash them with water and laundry soap. The processing is repeated after a week.
A severely affected plant requires the use of insecticidal preparations. You can use Aktellik by dissolving it in water according to the instructions.
Sick and weak trees are prone to diseases:
- pink rot causes leaf and stem rot;
- spotting disfigures the leaves.
In this case, the plant is treated with fungicides, which include methyl thiophanate and mankozeb. Processing should be carried out strictly according to the instructions that are attached to the preparations.
How to germinate a bone
A seed shoot will grow only if the fruit has not been heat treated. To try growing a palm tree from seed, you can use both seeds from fresh fruits and dried fruits purchased from the store, if they were dried naturally.
Plant soil
You can germinate a seed in ordinary soil or soil used for home flowers, but it is better to prepare a special nutrient mixture that will help accelerate seedling growth.To do this, mix the earth with sawdust in a 1: 1 ratio.
You can also prepare another option, which is suitable not only for germinating seeds, but also for keeping an adult palm tree. For it, it is necessary to mix an equal amount of clay-sod soil, humus with leafy soil, peat and sand. In the resulting composition, you need to add a large pinch of charcoal and mix the soil well so that the mass becomes homogeneous.
Preparing for germination
Before planting in the ground, the seeds must be prepared in order to increase their germination. To get one palm, it is better to immediately take about 5-8 seeds, since some of them may not rise or die as they grow. They should be freed from the pulp, rinsed well and left to dry completely. After that, the planting material must be soaked in warm water for several days and left in a place with good heating. Water with this method of germination should be changed daily.
You can prepare the bones for planting in another way. On each seed, it is necessary to make 1-2 punctures with a sharp object so that water can get inside. After that, the bones need to be wrapped in several layers of soft cotton fabric or cotton wool. The planting material should be placed in a container with a small amount of water and left for 3-4 days in a warm place. It is necessary to ensure that the seeds have constant access to liquid, adding it as it evaporates. When the bones swell a little, they can be planted.
Planting and watering
It is recommended to plant seeds in the ground in winter, since at this stage the plant will not need as much light as in subsequent periods of development. To germinate dates at home from a stone, you must proceed according to the following scheme:
- In a pot common for all seeds, a soil is placed, which is moderately watered with water until it is wet.
- The prepared planting material is planted at a distance of at least 5 cm from each other. The seeds should be planted in the ground to a depth of 1.5 times their length.
- Watering is not carried out immediately after planting.
- The pot with the future palm tree should be placed in a warm place with a temperature of about +30 degrees. For additional insulation on top of each bone, you can build small greenhouses by installing plastic glasses upside down. Remember, dates do not tolerate temperature changes, they must be constantly warm.
- To obtain seedlings, not only a high temperature is needed, but also sufficient soil moisture, so future palm trees should be watered every day without flooding them. Instead of watering the soil, you can irrigate it with a sprayer.
Seedling seedlings
If you managed to germinate more than 1 seed, the seedlings will have to be planted in different pots. You can start this procedure after the plants grow at least 10-15 cm in height. If this is not done, the dates will become crowded, and they will die.
How to properly transplant a violet at home
For the future palm tree, a high pot is needed, in which the long roots of the plant will be placed, with a diameter of at least 12 cm. A special soil is poured into the container, which should be moistened. To make the palm grow comfortably, you need to put a good layer of drainage on the bottom of the pot. For this purpose, pebbles, expanded clay or any bulk materials are suitable.
Planting process
Even an inexperienced grower can plant a palm tree, however, a number of important nuances should be taken into account. First of all, palms are somewhat different from most home flowers, which means they have their own special needs:
- you can sow palm trees regardless of the season, however, the sprouts need a well-lit place; with a lack of light, they will have to be provided with artificial lighting;
- germination and germination duration are related to the shelf life of the seed, so it is better to sow it immediately after purchase;
- prepared seeds are placed in a light soil mixture - this can be a ready-made material for germinating seeds, in addition, flower growers often use a mixture of perlite and vermiculite, with the addition of sphagnum or a substrate of coconut fibers; they should be moist, but not wet; it is advisable to disinfect the material beforehand by steaming for 8-12 minutes in the microwave;
- it is not necessary to place the seeds too deeply, a depth of 1-2 diameters of seeds is enough; if too deep, they begin to rot; if the seeds are scarified, then they should be planted with the cut side down;
you can take any container, but it is best to use transparent plastic containers with a lid - these are used to sell confectionery and pastries; in a closed container, the seeds will not dry out, and thanks to the transparent bottom, it is easier to observe the process of seedling growth;
the landing should be placed in a warm place, the air temperature should be + 25- + 32 degrees; however, this indicator depends on the variety of palm trees: for some, the normal germination temperature is +25 degrees, while for others, +30 is not enough;
to eliminate the likelihood of mold and seed rotting, you should arrange daily ventilation - it is enough to open the container lid for 15–20 minutes a day, providing free access to air;
home-grown palm seeds do not need to be watered; as the substrate dries, it should be carefully sprayed from a spray bottle;
Some, especially advanced "palmaholics" acquire special mini-greenhouses with installed heating devices and a thermostat. But, this pleasure is not cheap.
In the summer, a container with palm seeds can be placed on the windowsill, but you just have to take into account the following:
- the windowsill should be warm, without drafts and constant shade;
- the substrate and seedlings should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
If there is no place with suitable conditions, then there is a way out: future palm trees will feel good on the closet, where the thermometer will always show more degrees than in the rest of the room.
Care rules
Properly caring for a date palm is no more difficult than for an ordinary indoor flower. It needs to be watered, given a shower, fed and transplanted as it grows. The date does not tolerate drafts, keep this in mind when placing it.
Watering
The palm tree loves water. She does not tolerate dried soil. However, it is also not recommended to fill it, otherwise the roots will begin to rot. It is better to water less often, but abundantly as the soil dries up. If the leaves have dropped down, spots have appeared on them, then the watering is insufficient.
Spray the dates regularly, they like moisture. Have a more serious water treatment once a week. If possible, place the plant pot in the tub, cover the ground with plastic, and rinse the trunk and leaves from the shower.
Top dressing
The date palm needs to be fed all year round. In winter, this should be done no more than once a month, and from March to September inclusive - once a week. Buy a ready-to-use all-in-one mixture for palm and leafy plants. Mineral and organic fertilizers are suitable. Dissolve them in water and apply on wet ground. Fertilizer should be applied a week after transplanting, then the date palm will take root better.
Signs of a battery shortage
- Leaves brighten - there is not enough nitrogen in the soil. First, the leaves acquire a lighter shade, then the growth of the plant stops.
- The leaves are covered with bronze-brown spots - little potassium. At first, the foliage will be covered with spots, then curl up and dry out.
- The yellow edging on the leaves is a lack of magnesium. Feed with magnesium fertilizer, otherwise the plant will die over time.
Pruning
It is not recommended to prune the plant before 5 years of age - it may die. The top of the palm tree should also not be cut off, otherwise the growth point will be disturbed. Do not cut off damaged or yellowed foliage; let it dry out and fall off naturally.
Air humidity
Room humidity, comfortable for a date palm, is not lower than 50 and not higher than 70%. Move the pot away from the radiator before the start of the heating season. When the heating is turned on, cover the batteries with a wet cloth. In summer in dry weather, spray the leaves more often with water at room temperature. This should be done at least once a week.
About caring for the Date palm at home:
Temperature: The optimum temperature for Date Palm in summer is 20-25 ºC, while in winter the temperature should not drop below 15-18 ºC, and some species can tolerate temperatures of 8-10 ºC. All year round, the Date loves the warm content and the flow of fresh air, but at the same time it is worth protecting from drafts, especially in the winter season.
Lighting: Bright lighting, but Date works great in light shade. For a palm tree, the east and west windowsill are suitable. Regular rotation of the palm tree is necessary for even crown development. In summer, when the air temperature at night does not drop below 12 ºC, Date will not refuse to be kept outdoors in the shade of other trees. If this is not possible, the palm tree can be taken out onto the balcony, while protecting it from direct sunlight.
Phoenix canariensis.
Watering: The date palm loves a plentiful flow without drying out the earthy coma, so it must be watered abundantly and regularly. In summer, the palm tree has active growth and an increased need for water, since the soil dries out faster. In winter, with a lack of lighting and a cool content, watering is reduced as the soil dries out longer, but it is not worth bringing the soil to complete drying. To maintain humidity, a pot with a palm tree is placed on a pallet filled with wet expanded clay, pebbles or moss, so that the bottom does not touch the water. Water for irrigation must be used settled, rainwater or bottled as hard water is detrimental to the plant. Watering errors cause the greatest damage to the plant.
Humidity: The house palm loves high humidity and the higher the humidity, the better it feels. The optimum humidity threshold for it ranges from 70 to 80%. It is recommended to spray regularly, spraying in the heat is especially beneficial for the plant. It is also necessary to arrange a warm shower for the plant on a weekly basis for the prevention of spider mites. During the shower, the earthen lump should be covered with a film. The best way to increase humidity in winter at temperatures below 18 ºC is with a container of water next to the plant or a humidifier.
Phoenix roebelenii.
Fertilizers: Fertilize from spring to autumn 2 times a month, and in winter 1 time per month with liquid fertilizers. For feeding, you can use complex fertilizers for decorative deciduous plants, as well as special fertilizers for palms. The palm tree responds well to fertilization through spraying the leaves, which must be done once a month.
Soil: For palm trees, you can also add turf, humus and manure to it. It should be borne in mind that good soil for a Date Palm must quickly pass water. Good drainage is essential. It is recommended to add perlite and charcoal to the substrate.
Transplant: The date palm does not like transplanting very much, therefore, it is transplanted only if necessary by the transshipment method with replacement of drainage and adding fresh soil. When transplanting, it is not recommended to deepen the plant; the soil level should remain the same as before transplanting. Young specimens (up to 5 years old) are transplanted annually, adults every 2-3 years. Every year, if no transplant is made, it is necessary to change the topsoil. Good drainage is essential.It is better to choose a tall pot for a palm tree, since the Date has rather long roots.
Date palm pests. The plant is sick most often not from pests, but from inattentive care. But it is worth knowing that the queen of the oasis can be affected by spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. For prevention, you need to use a warm shower, wipe the leaves.
Phoenix dactylifera.
Diseases and pests
Phoenix is quite unpretentious. If the date palm gets enough light, moisture and nutrients and is in a warm place, there should be no problem growing it. Most often, diseases and harmful insects affect plants weakened by improper care.
Pests
Harmful insects settling on a palm tree lead to the loss of decorativeness of its foliage, twisting and falling of the plates. Possible pests include nematodes, scale insects, mealybugs, as well as thrips and spider mites. Methods of dealing with them can be different and include mechanical, chemical treatment and the use of folk remedies.
Insects visible to the eye can be collected from the foliage by hand. The nematode is considered the most dangerous pest - it is especially difficult to remove it. In case of defeat, the date palm will have to be destroyed along with the soil, sometimes the pot is thrown away with them. One diseased plant can quickly infect neighboring plants.
Before using chemical processing agents, they often try to get rid of pests with the help of household products. Among the most famous are:
- A mixture of soap and vodka. About 15 g of liquid soap or 1 tsp. planed laundry soap is diluted in a liter of water. Add 2 tbsp to the solution. l vodka and process the foliage of the palm tree weekly, repeating the procedure several times.
- Tobacco infusion. 40 g of tobacco must be poured into 1 liter of water. The resulting mixture is insisted for two days, then another liter of water is poured into it again. Foliage is treated with a diluted infusion.
- Garlic extract. About 4 garlic heads are kept in a liter of water for about 5 days. 6 g of the resulting mixture (1 plastic bottle cap) is poured into a liter of water and sprayed with the solution on the foliage.
After such treatment, the foliage is thoroughly washed with water, and then allowed to dry - for this, the plant must be in a warm place.
If traditional methods do not bring the desired result, you should use purchased insecticidal products. Among them are Fitoverm, Aktellik, Pyrethrum and many other brands. The selected drug is diluted according to the instructions. Most often, the proportion is 2 g per 1 liter of water. Before processing a palm tree completely, it is necessary to carry out a test treatment. To do this, you need to apply the drug solution to just one leaf of the plant and wait a day. If nothing happened to the date, then it has endured the impact well, and the entire green part can be processed. But before complete processing, it is necessary to cover the soil in the pot so that the insect repellent does not get into the substrate.
Diseases
Sometimes the date palm can be affected by fungal diseases. These include pink rot and gray spotting. The reason for their development is usually an insufficient drainage layer, unsuitable soil or the appearance of pests. They can be cured with fungicidal preparations. For dates, it is better to select products that do not contain copper. They should be applied systematically until the plant recovers, but they should not do this more often than once a week.
If you take proper care of the date, it will practically not hurt.
Date palm care
Where to locate
Although an adult date palm can grow to enormous (by household standards), it grows very slowly. Therefore, the place that you choose for her is to gain a foothold for her for a long time. When choosing a place, it must be borne in mind that this palm is a very light-loving plant and does not tolerate stagnant air.In the summer, it does not impose special requirements on air temperature and tolerates daily changes quite easily. While the plant is small and quite transportable, take it out into the fresh air during the summer. If the palm tree has already reached an age when it is difficult to do this, be sure to provide it with an influx of fresh air. In winter, a cooler content is desirable for the date palm (+ 10-15 degrees is recommended). In the first years of the plant's life, a window sill is quite suitable for placement, where the temperature in winter is lower than indoors. For the palm tree to grow evenly, your intervention will be required. The leaves of the plant will inevitably be drawn to the light source, so it must be turned periodically. This is especially true when new leaves appear.
Watering and humidity
In warm weather, water the date palm abundantly and regularly. Avoid drying out the soil and water as soon as the topsoil dries.
Important! If the soil is allowed to dry out, the date palm leaves will wilt, and even after the resumption of watering, they do not restore their original position!
But at the same time, you cannot fill the plant. Stagnant water and cool air (even in summer) can be harmful. Drain the water from the pallet 20-30 minutes after watering. The leaves react to the bay of the plant, first of all. Characteristic brown spots appear on them. At their first appearance, you must immediately reduce watering. But if the whole plant begins to darken at once, then immediately transplant it into fresh soil, root decay has begun! During transplantation, be sure to examine the roots and remove the rotten ones. In winter, watering is reduced, but it depends on the temperature of the content. The lower it is, the less often watering and vice versa. But it is impossible to completely stop watering in winter.
It is believed that the humidity of the air is not important for the date palm. This is not true. Dry air causes the tips of the leaves to dry out. Therefore, on hot, dry days, be sure to spray it. The same should be done in winter if you have not been able to keep the palm cool and grow at normal room temperature. The water for irrigation and spraying of the date palm must be surely settled and not lower than room temperature. At the same time, it is highly desirable that it be soft. The use of melt and rainwater is ideal, but you can soften it at home (read how).
Top dressing
For date palms, a liquid organic fertilizer works best. I do not advise beginner flower growers to experiment with cooking, but to buy ready-made fertilizer. During the period of active development, the plant is fed three times a month. An additional monthly feeding with a solution of potassium nitrate (one gram per liter of water) also gives a good result. In winter, feeding does not stop, but is reduced to once a month.
Transfer
As I have already noted, the date grows very slowly, therefore, it is considered young for quite a long time, up to about 5 years of age. It is transplanted before reaching this age annually. After that, the palm tree is transplanted only when the need arises. This is most often necessary when the pot becomes small for the plant. For very large plants, only the replacement of the top layer of the earth is practiced. Moreover, if the roots protrude excessively to the surface of the earth, then they are cut off (a layer of 5 to 10 centimeters). If you do not want to use purchased land, you can compose it yourself, mixing in equal parts of sod land, humus, compost and sand. Ensure good drainage to avoid stagnant water.
When will the sprout grow into a full-grown palm?
Having learned that it is possible to grow a palm tree at home and how easy it is, a novice florist, fired up with an idea, can rush to bring the idea to life.However, you should not count on a quick result - it can take a very long time from planting a seed to its transformation into a large, spectacular flower.
Only the hatching palm fry develops most slowly, but gradually their growth accelerates. Actually, in their natural environment, these plants do not differ in rapid growth.
Sometimes it takes a year and a half for a palm to be covered with real leaves, and in some species this happens only by 3-4 years.
The first true leaves usually do not look like the foliage of an adult palm at all, but with each leaf the young palm will more and more resemble its taller relatives.
2-3 years after the appearance of the first complex leaves, the flower will turn into a beautiful tropical guest - luxurious and spectacular. But, until this moment, the owner will have to be patient.
