The knifofia in the photo is charming
Choosing plants to decorate your garden, especially not too familiar and traditional, first of all I want to see how they will look. Here is Knifofia in the photo - simply charming - bright, as if fiery sultans among dense greenery.
This wonderful plant came to us from the countries of Africa, where it was widespread. Today Knifofia can be successfully grown on the territory of our country. Breeders have bred Knifofia varieties that are able to winter in the not too warm climate of central Russia.
You can get a Knifofia at home using seeds. They must be sown for seedlings in early March. The earth should be nutritious, light. The container with seeds must be covered with glass or foil, creating a greenhouse environment. Such a greenhouse must be periodically ventilated and watered. The sprouts of Knifofia will hatch in 3 weeks. Young plants can dive when they have a third leaf. Knifofia is transplanted to a permanent place in the garden only at the end of May - July, when the weather is warm.
The place for Knifofia must necessarily be elevated, well-drained and, preferably, sunny, although she will tolerate partial shade well. This plant loves watering, but if the water stagnates, it can get sick with root rot and disappear. In the first year of planting, the knifofia must be looked after very carefully. It needs to be weeded out, not allowing the weeds to pick up nutrients, feed, water.
You can propagate Knifofia by dividing the bush.
For the wintering of Knifofia in a mild winter, it is simply just covered for the winter with straw, spruce branches, and on top it is additionally covered with plastic wrap or roofing felt. if the winters are very cold, then it is best to dig up Knifofia by transplanting it into a large pot and taking it home for the winter in a cool place.
Good luck!
A very beautiful plant. I think it's worth digging up for the winter. Gardeners do not recommend covering any plant with straw, as rodents often hibernate in the straw and they can damage the root.
And the seeds are not soaked before planting? At what distance should they be planted in a container?
