Coleus hybrid in the garden
Coleus hybrid is highly regarded for its decorative properties and extremely effective appearance of scalloped burgundy leaves, bordered by a bright green stripe. As a rule, in the garden, this plant is planted along the edge of the flower garden: in this case, it most successfully sets off small nondescript flowers, for example, kermek, gypsophila, as well as plants with linear leaves - liatris, lilies, crocosmia, and so on.
Coleus hybrid grows extremely quickly, so you will have to monitor its reproduction, otherwise it may soon displace other inhabitants of the flower bed. He needs a sunny place protected from the wind (scattered partial shade is also suitable), slightly acidic, nutritious and breathable soil. This species is susceptible to spider mite disease. However, the measures for its protection are extremely simple and boil down, first of all, to regular spraying of the leaves with clean water. Do not forget about regular watering of the coleus, as well as carrying out formative pruning, in which excessively long shoots that are knocked out of the general compact form of the plant should be removed. Coleus responds well to fertilizing, which in June should be carried out with nitrogen, and later with mineral fertilizers.
The easiest way to propagate a plant is by seed. In this case, the planting material is placed in the soil (a mixture of turf, leaf and peat soil with sand) at the end of winter and covered with sand. Grown up shoots should be dived into the same soil. Plants can be transferred from pots to an open area no earlier than in June.
And I thought that Coleus is just a houseplant. It turns out interesting. How does this flower endure wintering?
