Rosehip care and cultivation

Rosehip or, as it is also called, wild roses bear fruit in orange, brown or red large or small fruits. It is grown for beauty, fruit and edible petals.

Rosehip is less whimsical than cultivated roses, it is rarely exposed to diseases and pests, with the exception of aphids. But nevertheless, if there is a possibility, then spring treatment of rose hips with copper sulfate and a remedy against pests and diseases will not be superfluous. It is not required to remove flowers that have already bloomed, the ovaries of the fruits are as decorative as the flowers were before and how the fruits themselves will be after.

Pruning is required for wild rose only in early spring, when the plant starts to grow, at the same time, too old, damaged branches are removed. The branches can be cut to thirty centimeters, and by the end of summer they will already be about two meters, but this applies to those regions that do not have a very cold climate. Watering the rosehip is necessary when the drought has lasted for a long time, it loves sunny places, but it grows well in the shade and partial shade.

Rosehip is grown using seeds and root shoots. Fully ripe, non-shriveled berries are buried in moist soil in some old pot and leave it for the winter in the garden, after wintering, the berries are dug up and the seeds are separated, they are placed in a glass of water and those seeds that have sunk to the bottom are sown in a box. in a cold greenhouse. Planting rose hips is preferable in the fall, with a two-year-old seedling. The emerging sprout from the root can be transplanted wherever you need it.

Rosehips are harvested depending on what they are harvested for. The content of vitamin C in berries decreases over time, but the amount of sugars increases, this will be evidenced by darkened fruits, as well as past frosts. Hence: to get sweet berries, it is better to wait for the berries to darken and to cool down, but to get healthy berries, they need to be picked as the berries ripen.
