How to make a DIY wood chopper?

Circular saw equipment

To make a wood chipper of this type, you will need a drawing and a pre-punched structure. Diagrams can be found on the Internet, but with certain skills and knowledge, you can draw drawings do-it-yourself chopper... In order to make a standard disc branch cutter, you will need:

  • electric motor up to 2 kW;
  • axis for fixing the discs, the diameter must match the fit of the discs or cutter;
  • metal cutter or circular saws (10 pieces);
  • washers for installation between discs;
  • pulley for axle, engine and belts;
  • bed for fixing all equipment;
  • steel sheets about 5 and 2 mm thick for the body;
  • tools and fasteners.

The prepared materials must be of high quality, since the work of such equipment takes place under heavy loads, which can damage the wood shredder. Do-it-yourself assembly of the wood cutter is carried out as follows:

  1. Discs are mounted on a pre-prepared shaft, washers are located between them. The thickness of the washers should not exceed 1 centimeter, less is also not recommended. The discs must be tightly fixed on the axle, for this you can use welding.
  2. A frame is made of channels, on which the shaft and the electric motor will be mounted.
  3. The location of the motor and shaft in relation to each other must be parallel. It is necessary to completely eliminate distortions or displacements, as this can lead to belt breakage and loss of efficiency.
  4. A working body is being manufactured. It must be strong, as the pieces of branches will fly apart with great force. The supporting parts must be made of 5 mm thick steel.
  5. A socket is made for feeding branches, its length should be about a meter. This device will ensure the safety and correct feeding of the branches into the bunker.

The model has a modern design, the funnel is equipped with guiding ribs and a built-in pusher. The body is made of high-strength plastic. Motor power 2 kW, maximum branch diameter 3.5 cm.

Grass cutter from trimmer

A garden shredder can be made using a gasoline or electric trimmer. This will cause the tool to work upside down. To create equipment designed to chop grass and thin twigs, you will need, in addition to brushcutters with cutting attachments, the following materials:

• plastic or metal container with a volume of at least 50 liters;

• about 1 sq. M. steel mesh with a small mesh size;

• about 3 meters of metal tube (aluminum or steel), half an inch in diameter;

• a piece of board or moisture resistant chipboard, plywood of such width that a trimmer fits on it;

• clamps, which will be used to fasten the brushcutter to the wooden base;

• self-tapping screws, bolts, nuts, washers;

• wooden blocks (5 by 5 cm is enough).

To assemble the chopping mechanism from the trimmer, you will need to use the following tools and devices:

• a screwdriver or a screwdriver with bits;

• electric drill with a set of drills for wood and metal;

• electric jigsaw with saws for cutting metal or its manual analog;

• a hammer;

• open-end or socket wrenches;

• a punch;

• an anvil or flat iron plate.

A punch is needed so that it is convenient to drill holes with an electric drill. This tool is pointed at the point where you want to drill through the metal. Then they hit him with a hammer. The drill does not slip out of the recess obtained while drilling a metal part.

Preparatory activities

A grass cutter from a brushcutter is made in a number of stages. Initially, they are prepared in a container where the grass and branches will be ground:

• markings are made at the bottom (along the perimeter) for four trapezoidal holes with rounded corners;

• drill holes in each drawn segment with a section of 1 cm;

• a jigsaw file is inserted into them and trapezoids are cut out;

• process the sections with a file or sandpaper;

• a hole is drilled in the center of the bottom for the chopper shaft;

• a circle is cut out of a steel mesh with dimensions along the diameter of the bottom;

• with the help of small scraps of boards or blocks, the prepared mesh fragment is fixed to the bottom of the container;

• legs are made of metal pipes for the container, attaching them to the tank with bolts.

Wooden pieces are fixed with self-tapping screws, twisting them from the inside of the tank into metal jumpers between the cut trapezoids. In this way, the net is securely attached to the bottom of the container.

Legs are made in the following way:

• bend the tubes in a vice or with a pipe bender in the form of the letter "P";

• the ends of future supports are flattened with a hammer;

• 2 holes are drilled in them on each side (6.5 or 8.5 mm in cross section);

• fit the workpieces to the bottom of the container and mark the points of bolted connections;

• drill according to the hole mark;

• using bolts with washers and nuts, attach the footrests to the casing.

After preparing the casing, in order to reduce the dimensions of the created mechanism, perform the following operations:

• disassemble the trimmer by disconnecting the motor, bar and cutting attachment from each other;

• cut off a fragment of about 20-40 centimeters from the bar with a cable;

• collect the brushcutter;

• check the efficiency of equipment.

Chopper assembly

If the trimmer works well after assembly, then a grass trimmer is created from it.

• The brushcutter motor is attached to the board with clamps.

• Fix the bar on the wooden base using clamps and a brushcutter handle.

• Connect the cutting attachment to the end of the bar previously inserted into the hole in the bottom of the casing.

• Start the mechanism and test it in operation.

After the actions taken, you will get an aggregate, a photo of which is presented below.

If the trimmer used to assemble the shredder is equipped with a gasoline engine, then the motor is positioned on the base so that it is convenient to fill in fuel, start the device and adjust its operation (speed).

Cutting attachments are equipped with knives or fishing line - it depends on the thickness of the plant stems to be chopped.

Drive design

In factory crushing plants, there are two ways of transferring rotation from the motor to the gearbox:

  1. Direct drive (through clutch). The transmission of torque occurs without losses, the design is compact in size. If it was possible to select a ready-made geared motor, the dimensions and weight of the installation will be even less. However, in this case it is necessary to provide for manual (and ideally automatic) reversal in case of jammed rotors.
  2. Belting. Losses of efficiency and relatively high dimensions are compensated by a smooth start of the mechanism. If the shredder gets jammed, only the belt will break or slip.

Operating rules

When working with any electrical device, safety precautions should be followed. The grass cutter is no exception! To prevent the device from deteriorating, you need to know the basic rules of operation:

  1. The mechanism will jam if damp branches or grass are placed in the device.
  2. You cannot bookmark raw materials in large volumes. Everything should be in moderation.
  3. When the device is switched on, it must always be supervised.
  4. The mechanism has piercing and cutting elements, so children should not be allowed to approach the device.
  5. To prevent the device from getting wet in the rain, it is installed under a canopy.
  6. Foreign objects such as glass or metal must not get inside the machine.
  7. If something is stuck inside, the device is disconnected from the mains and only then the stuck part is taken out.
  8. Electrical wires must be insulated.

The first launch of the device is done very carefully, since it is the most dangerous.
