Selection Tips
Snow removal is physically demanding. Therefore, the shovel should be small and light. The ideal option is plastic. But for each situation, different shovels are optimal:
- plastic equipment does an excellent job with fresh loose snow
- it is easier to remove packed snow with a metal shovel
- for regular work in everyday life, a snowplow made of plastic or wood is suitable
- Tray size. Depending on physical capabilities, it is selected individually. The best option is a wide rectangular shovel with a side of 40 cm.
- Tilt angle. When working, the roll of the scoop acts as a lever, which significantly speeds up the process. The optimum tilt is -25 °.
- Weight and size of the cutting. Chosen according to individual preferences. The ideal option is shovels with a telescopic handle.
- Bumpers. Their presence on the shovel scoop keeps snow during work.
How to choose?
By tool weight
One of the main indicators of a solid winter shovel is considered to be light weight. Here the rule applies: a light tool is a simplified work for your pleasure, a massive one is a long work. The lightest models are made of plastic.

You can get tired quickly even when working with a lightweight snow shovel, when the size of the tool is chosen incorrectly. The scoop (scraper) parameters are selected for individual parameters and needs

Configuration
Snow shovels are usually produced with bumpers on one or three sides. They prevent the snow mass from sliding off the shovel and make it possible to transfer more snow in one pass. The shovels with high sides have a large bucket that can hold a lot of snow.
Design
Large sides on the back of the winter shovel improve its sliding and working process. Reinforced aluminum strip reinforces the plastic. A lip on the edges of the working part protects it from damage and increases the service life of the tool. A stainless steel edge will help in clearing asphalt and concrete surfaces from snow and ice. The lightweight plastic-edged shovel will not scratch the surface or harm the plants. The foldable handle is convenient if you plan to transport a shovel.
A large shovel with a stationary handle is not transportable.

With your own hands
If it is not possible to purchase snow removal equipment, it does not matter. Consider what you can make a shovel from yourself with the help of improvised means:
- The simplest and most affordable option is a wooden shovel made of plywood or OSB.
- If an old baking sheet is lying around on the farm, then it will also serve as material for a shovel scoop.
- After the repair, a piece of stainless steel remained - we will use it for the ladle.
Regardless of which snow removal tool is in your yard, remember that it is better to stock up on them before the first snows. Wear gloves and take care of the tool. So it will serve you much longer.
