How to hang horizontal blinds

Sizes and measurements of blinds

To determine the size of the blinds and the features of their design, you should take measurements of the window. Armed with a tape measure and step-by-step instructions, it is not difficult to do it yourself, without the help of professionals.

Since such structures are made of several types, then the measurements for them are different. Therefore, before taking up the tape measure, you should decide on the type of product.

Measurements for horizontal blinds

Such products can be fastened in three ways.

On the wall.

  1. The width of the blinds that will be attached to the wall should be ten centimeters wider than the width of the window.
  2. The height of the products is determined independently. They can cover the sill completely or be slightly higher.
  3. It should be borne in mind that the structure will be fixed to the wall, so its length should be five centimeters longer than desired.

In the opening.

  1. Measurements are made at least at three points in width and height. The smallest value is then selected from the three digits. This should be done because window openings are often not entirely rectangular.
  2. The length of the product is equal to the height of the glass with rubber bands and a margin of one centimeter.
  3. The width of the glass plus the rubber bands is the width of the blinds.
  4. The chain length should be equal to 2/3 of the window length.
  5. It is necessary to ensure that the structure does not interfere with the opening of the window.

On the sash.

  1. When the blinds are supposed to be installed on the sash, the height of the product should be equal to the length of the window sash.
  2. The distance from one glazing bead, on which it is planned to fix the structure, to another is measured, thirty millimeters are added and the width of the product is obtained.
  3. If there is a desire to install any additional fasteners, you cannot do without the help of a specialist when measuring the window.

Measurements for vertical blinds

Such designs have become very popular in recent years. This is due to the variety of colors and textures of products, as well as ease of installation.

There are three ways to mount vertical blinds:

  • to the ceiling;
  • on the wall;
  • in the opening.

When fixing the product to the ceiling, its width should be equal to the width of the window opening, plus at least ten centimeters. The height will be equal to the distance from the ceiling to the windowsill plus two centimeters.

With the selected installation of blinds to the wall, the length of the product should be five centimeters more than the height of the window opening. The width of the window opening plus ten centimeters will be equal to the width of the blinds.

For a structure that will be mounted in a window opening, the length of the product will be equal to the height of the window opening minus one centimeter. The width of the structure will be equal to the width of the top of the window minus one centimeter.

Sizes of roller blinds

You can hang products both on the wall and in the window opening.

The width of the roller blinds to be mounted on the wall can be arbitrary. In this case, everything depends on the personal preferences of the owner of the apartment. And in order to find out the required length, it is enough to measure the distance from the window sill to the window opening and add five centimeters to the result.

The width of the curtain, which will be attached to the window opening, must be equal to the opening width minus four centimeters. The length of the canvas is equal to the height of the window opening to the window sill.

Having measured the windows and decided on the size of the blinds, it will be necessary to select the type of construction mechanism and its location (right or left).

Installation of horizontal blinds on PVC window sashes

With this method of installation, the blinds are attached with small self-tapping screws (included) to the window profile. They must be installed so that they do not interfere with the handle to turn. Be careful: if you drill too close to the glazing beads, you can damage the glass unit.Therefore, in this case, correct measurements are very important.

Installation of blinds on a PVC window

Installation step by step

The procedure is as follows:

  • We install the mounts on the cornice so that they do not interfere with the moving parts inside.
  • Trying on the product on the frame. We expose it so that the lamellas go to the drain frame and to the right at the same distance.
  • We mark with a pencil or marker the place where the fasteners should be located. During this operation, it is necessary to keep the cornice as straight as possible. You can navigate by the contours of the window frame or use a level.
  • Although the plastic is quite soft and you can immediately screw in self-tapping screws into it so that the frame does not crack, it is better to pre-drill the holes. The drill diameter is slightly less than the diameter of the self-tapping screws. Usually self-tapping screws with a diameter of 3 mm are included, so the drill should be taken by 2 mm or 2.5 mm.
  • We take the brackets, fasten them with self-tapping screws to the frame.

  • We insert the curtain of the blinds, pressing until it clicks.
  • We close the ends with the plugs that come with the kit.

Having to drill holes in a window frame can be daunting, but that's okay. In case of improperly made holes, unsuccessful ones can be filled with sealant. White silicone, not acrylic (acrylic turns yellow quickly). In this case, the characteristics of the windows will not be affected. What could be dangerous - getting into a double-glazed window. Then it can crack. But this is not fatal - it can be replaced, although it will not be cheap.

We put the lower clamps

But that is not all. In order to finally install horizontal blinds on plastic windows, you need to drill a couple more holes - for the clips (also called anti-wind). These are additional fasteners at the bottom of the opening sash of the window. The bottom edge of the blinds is tucked into them. They do this so that when airing the blinds do not hang down, do not dangle from the wind and do not knock objects on the windowsill.

Don't hang out ...

We put the clamps as follows: we try on, pulling the blinds down a little, mark the places of fasteners, drill holes, install. We fill the lower bar into the installed clips. Now, even with a draft or an open sash, the blinds will not dangle. The only thing to watch out for during installation is not to get into the glazing bead (this is a long bar that goes along the glass unit and holds it). It is necessary to drill a hole in the frame itself, stepping back at least 1 cm from the edge. Otherwise, there are no problems.

No drilling

There is also a way to install blinds on plastic windows and not drill the frame. This method is available only for those blinds that are hung on opening sashes. In this case, they are simply hung on plastic mounts / brackets that slide onto the frame from above. To prevent them from moving, a strip of double-sided tape is attached to the back of the bracket. After removing the protective film, it can be glued (but you can not fix it).

The shape of the plastic fasteners depends on the type of cornice. So you need to select for each specially

These L-shaped plastic brackets are not included, but you can buy them from a store or from a firm that sells horizontal blinds. This method is convenient for simple dismantling of the blinds, which is convenient if they need to be repaired or washed.

Varieties of blinds

The method of fixing the blinds is largely determined by their design. Blinds are:

vertical - when assembled, they are located on the side;

horizontal - slats rise upward when opening.

Rolled. Such blinds are a single canvas and are often called roller blinds.

When fully or partially opened, they are collected at the top in a roll.

The design of roller blinds is extremely simple, and it is often the most affordable and inexpensive option for darkening a room. Do-it-yourself installation is much easier than other types of blinds.

The material from which vertical, horizontal and roller blinds are made can be different: plastic, wood, fabric, bamboo, aluminum.It is necessary to decide which model to hang and which material to prefer, based on the characteristics of the interior of the room and personal preferences.

Horizontal aluminum or plastic blinds are a classic, the most common model that is perfect for both home and office spaces. If you install vertical blinds with your own hands, then they will adequately replace curtains or curtains in the room.

Rolled fabric models look very beautiful, which will help to emphasize the individuality of the room.

Blinds installation with wall mounts

Despite the huge number of ingenious fasteners on the market, attaching blinds with a drill remains quite relevant. Everyone knows how to drill correctly, so video instructions will be enough to understand the process. In the video, the craftsmen prefer not to waste time and use a hammer, but we recommend that you do not be too lazy and drill a couple of holes, especially if you want the blinds to last a long time.

Installing blinds in an hour

If you have bought or ordered vertical or horizontal blinds, then we suggest you install them yourself, because you can cope with this task even without experience, the main thing is to have a desire, 1 hour of free time and a few tools.

Attention! Installation of blinds does not require special skills, but keep in mind that any breakdowns that arise in the process of independent work will exclude the possibility of warranty repair, exchange / return of curtains. Depending on the type of curtains, your preferences and conditions, blinds are installed:

Depending on the type of curtains, your preferences and conditions, blinds are installed:

We have compiled 3 step-by-step instructions and a selection of useful videos with which you can mount horizontal and vertical blinds of any kind in any way.

To install horizontal blinds on a wall or ceiling, as well as to install vertical blinds above a window, you need to prepare:

Varieties of blinds

Blinds perform the same function as curtains - they protect the room and furniture from direct sunlight, and, moreover, from prying eyes. But blinds have their undeniable advantages.

  1. Firstly, they do not delay the flow of fresh air into the room.
  2. And secondly, with the help of blinds, you can adjust the lighting in the room. You can make it twilight, you can make it completely dark, or vice versa - fill the room with sunlight.

Blinds correspond to the modern style of minimalism and rationality, the maximum free space of the room. They do not take up much space and are easy to maintain.

Modern manufacturers offer us different blinds not only in their appearance (vertical, horizontal, cassette - for use outside the window), but also in the material of execution. They can be plastic, metal, wood, bamboo, fabric, etc. There are roller blinds, roller blinds, protective roller blinds and much more.

Note!

Standard vertical blinds are quite often used not only in office premises, but also at home, and not necessarily on windows. A wide range of colors and a variety of shapes allows these structures to be used in the most unexpected design solutions .. The structure of vertical blinds consists of a cornice, runners, slats and a chain

The lamellas must be selected in accordance with the shape and size of the window. When installing vertical blinds, you first need to decide on the type of attachment - on the wall or on the ceiling

The design of vertical blinds consists of a cornice, runners, slats and a chain. Lamellas must be selected in accordance with the shape and size of the window. When installing vertical blinds, you first need to decide on the type of attachment - on the wall or on the ceiling.

Then we make the markup and install the brackets.After that, we install the cornice, runners and slats.

When installing the latter, it is important to hang them in the exact order in which they were in the package.

Helpful advice!

A feature of installing vertical blinds is the installation of additional weights at the bottom. They are connected to each other by a chain from the inside and outside of the structure.

Horizontal blinds - as well as vertical ones, are quite popular both in office premises and at home. When installing them, a few more fasteners are used. They are usually attached to the wall (completely covering the window opening) or to the window (installation takes place on each window sash).

If we decided to do this on our own, the main thing is not to spoil the window and blinds, strictly follow the instructions. The installation process is standard - marking is done, fasteners are installed, we hang the cornice and lamellas.

Everything new is well forgotten old. Our ancestors used wooden shutters in their homes as the most reliable way to protect from the sun's rays. In addition, they were the original decoration of every home. So today we returned to this.

Blinds are modern shutters, greatly improved and modified, made with various materials. In essence, they have not changed anything. Firstly - protection, secondly - a harmonious element of the interior.

How to take measurements correctly

First of all, the blinds must be of the correct size. To do this, you need to decide on the method of securing. The methods can be divided into two groups:

  • Attach blinds directly to window frames. There are options for using self-tapping screws and fixing the structure without drilling. In addition, it is possible to install common fasteners on the entire frame or on each leaf separately.
  • Place blinds on walls or ceilings. Several additional solutions are also possible here. - installation in the window opening, on the ceiling in front of the window, on the side walls. For each case, you will need to measure your parameters.

If you plan to install blinds on several windows, you should measure each opening separately. Although it seems that the window openings are exactly the same, this is not always true. A discrepancy of 2-3 cm can lead to difficult-to-eliminate consequences.

If you plan to mount a vertical structure, you must measure the height and width of the window opening. You should be careful when measuring, since you can shorten too long slats, but adding additional elements to narrow blinds will be problematic.

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic windows in the article: here

If the model has horizontal lamella placement, measurements will be somewhat more difficult. If the blinds are installed in the opening, you need to determine what the width and height are. The length of the canvas is selected at its own discretion. You can find both models up to the windowsill and long options that reach the floor. If necessary, blinds with plastic or aluminum slats are not difficult to make shorter.

When installing directly on the frame, you need to consider whether the window will open.

If the window is solid, not opening, you can measure the width of the entire opening. If the sash will open, it is worth ordering a hotel structure for each half of the window. Measurements should also be taken accordingly. Measure the parameters of the glass (width x height) and add 20 mm at the top and 5 mm at the edges.

When designing blinds that are directly attached to the frame, make sure that they will not interfere with the operation of the fittings and will not become an insurmountable obstacle during its maintenance (lubrication, adjustment, etc.)

Role in home decor

The main purpose of these roller shutters is to protect the room from the penetration of sunlight. They effectively absorb light, providing a pleasant shade in the room.The functional component does not prevent roller curtains from performing another task - decorative.

Roll-up curtains can be combined with regular curtains

The canvases fit perfectly into any style direction. They are used in classic design, hi-tech, minimalism. Curtains of this type bring a special piquancy to modern, Provence, English style. Light tulle can complement their attractive design.

Mounting methods

Before you hang the blinds, you need to decide whether you need a window sill to place, for example, flowers. The blinds are fixed in two ways: without drilling or by drilling. The cornice is the basis of any blinds. It is the cornice that is attached to the ceiling, to the wall, in the window opening or to the sash. The eaves can be supported by special brackets.

Installation of blinds using drilling

If the curtains are hung on each window sash, then the fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws. The upper strip of the blinds is applied to the upper edge of the glass unit, where the attachment points are indicated with particular accuracy. For more accurate fastening, you can pre-drill small holes. Then the brackets are applied to the marked places under the very top of the glass unit frame and securely fastened with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver, after which the blinds are installed on them.

Next, a fishing line is attached to hold the lamellas. For this, two holes are made in the frame under the lower glazing beads of each sash. Holes are drilled exactly below the corresponding line outlets located on the top of the louver. The lower ends of the line, threaded through the louver system, are threaded through the plugs. The plugs, in turn, are threaded into the holes made, and the line is stretched.

This mounting method is used to install roller blinds or horizontal blinds. Vertical blinds are attached to the upper slope of the window, to the wall or to the ceiling, also by means of drilling. First, holes are drilled in the ceiling or wall with a puncher, where the dowels are inserted. The curtain rod of the blind is screwed on with screws.

Installation of blinds without drilling

If in the future it is necessary to remove and remove the blinds, the holes will become a big disadvantage of the window's appearance. Therefore, to install the blinds on the window sash, you can use brackets that can be attached to the frame in the following ways:

  • fastening to the upper part of the profile if the sash opens;
  • using double-sided tape.

With the help of magnets on the flap (at the bottom), the blinds are fixed parallel to the window when it is opened.

These methods are more gentle and safer in terms of damage to the metal-plastic frame. Mounting blinds on windows without drilling is quite reliable. And you can remove them for cleaning, for example, with almost one movement of your hand.

All blinds have the correct geometric shape, therefore, the markings for attaching the upper strip of the blinds must be carried out with particular accuracy. The slightest distortion will spoil the overall appearance of the window, as well as complicate the operation of the moving filter mechanisms.

Installation instructions for vertical blinds to the ceiling / wall and into the window opening

Do-it-yourself vertical blinds installation involves the following steps:

Step 1.Check the complete set and lay out all the parts on the work surface.

The set of vertical blinds includes: fasteners for blinds (brackets) 2 pcs., Screws, cornice, the curtains themselves disassembled (slats with weights, lower connecting chain).

Step 2: Before installing the blinds, you need to make sure that the length suits you.

To do this, attach one lamella to the desired location on the ceiling / wall / upper plane of the window opening. If the distance from the bottom of the curtains to the window sill or floor is less than 1-2 cm, then it is better to shorten the lamellas. You can do this with your own hands: get the weights, cut off the excess and hem the edges back.

Step 3 Now you need to attach the cornice to the ceiling / wall of the window opening, align and mark its right and left ends.

Then we do the following:

If you are installing curtains in the window opening, then you do not need to mark the ends of the cornice, it is enough just to make notes, stepping back from the walls of the opening 2-3 cm towards the center.

Further, it is on these marks that we apply fasteners for the blinds and mark the places of drilling. This will give you 2 marks on the right and 2 marks on the left. Remember to attach the fasteners in line with the sides.

Note: for the installation of curtains with a width of more than 1.6 m, an additional intermediate mount must be installed 10 cm from the control cord.

Step 4 Now, using these marks, we drill holes with a drill. The drilling depth should be 4-5 cm.

Step 5 The right and left fasteners (in accordance with the sides and marks) are screwed to the ceiling / wall with self-tapping screws.

Step 6 Insert and close the curtain rod of the blinds in the fasteners locks by turning and / or pressing the lever clockwise. If you use conventional brackets for fastening, then the cornice is simply screwed to them.

Step 7 By adjusting the cord, turn the sliders so that they turn across the cornice (as shown below in the left photo) and proceed to attaching the slats, simply snapping them into the grooves of the sliders.

Step 8: We attach the lower chain to the lamella weights, first from their outer side, then cut off the excess and do the same on the reverse side of the lamellas, and then with the second part of the lamellas. Well, that's all, the installation of vertical blinds is complete, it remains only to check the operation of the mechanism and adjust the position of the slats.

Below is a video instruction on how to properly install do-it-yourself vertical blinds to the wall.

Drilled fasteners

This type of installation is much more reliable and durable, since the screws screwed into the window frame or wall better withstand the weight of the structure and the constant mechanical loads that fall on it.

Drilling requires accurate preliminary measurements and perfect horizontal alignment using a spirit level

Drilling the frame will damage the window profile. Although they are insignificant (they do not violate sound and heat insulation), if you decide to further remove the blinds, when removing the structure, there will be noticeable traces that will have to be masked, for example, with silicone or liquid plastic. Roll or horizontal systems are usually placed inside the window. To hang vertical blinds - drill the ceiling or wall above the window opening.

Installation with drilling can be carried out independently or entrusted to specialists.

For installation you will need:

  • pencil;
  • building level;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill (with drills 3 and 6 mm);
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver (flat or Phillips).

How to hang horizontal blinds

First, we mark the places for the mounting plates or brackets: measure 6 cm from the glass on both sides and mark with a pencil the places of the upcoming drilling. The line between the marked holes must be checked with a level so that it is strictly horizontal.

This is essential for the correct and long-term operation of the louver system. The window profile (especially not new) can crack when screwing in the screws, therefore it is recommended to first use a thin drill in the marked fastening points, and then screw the screws into the prepared holes

On opening windows, holes for fastening brackets are made in the upper part of the sash

Holes for screws for brackets are drilled in the upper part of the sash (on opening ones) or on the outside of the glazing bead (on blind windows). Then you need to hang the blinds, securing them in the brackets. When placing the blinds system inside the window opening, the fishing line (latch) is pulled to hold the rolled sheet or lamellas near the glass when the shutters are opened.A hole for the fishing line is drilled in the lower glazing bead (below the main ones) or on the side of the sash, the retainer is threaded into the plugs, achieving medium tension, and tied to a knot. All decorative and working parts are installed on the mounted structure: platbands, latches, fasteners for the lever and chain.

How to hang vertical blinds

When it is necessary to hang vertical blinds, marking and subsequent drilling is performed on a vertical wall surface or on the ceiling. The rest of the structural elements are screwed to the static brackets fixed with screws.

A cornice is mounted on static brackets with a special fastening system (runners) for vertical slats

To securely fix the brackets, dowels are inserted into the drilled holes and screws or screws are screwed in. A cornice is mounted on the brackets with a special fastening system (runners) for vertical slats.

Each lamella of vertical blinds is fixed on the cornice individually so that it moves and turns freely

After hanging all the slats on the runners, attach the provided weights in the lower part and hang the chain connecting them. Then install the decoration panel into the mounting brackets, covering it on both sides with end brackets and side panels. It remains only to check how the blind system that you hung up works.
