How to cut carpet at home. How to cut carpet and how to lay it correctly

How to cut carpet and how to lay it correctly

Before deciding what to cut the carpet, it would be worthwhile to take accurate measurements of the area of the room. Ideally, after the measurements have been taken, you need to sketch out a diagram of the room by hand on paper in order to get the maximum visual representation of the work front. In addition to the shape of the room, heating radiators, doorways and other features of the organization of space are necessarily marked on the diagram.

The drawing, which is also a schematic picture with the dimensions of the room applied to it, is already an argument in favor of going behind the carpet. The exact dimensions will allow you not to "guess on the coffee grounds", estimating the footage of the room and, accordingly, the required footage of the coating, but to buy the exact amount of material sufficient for laying in the selected room.

The drawn up scheme can be provided to the consultants of the outlet, so that, from the point of view of specialists in this matter, they can offer you not only the optimal type of carpet flooring, but also advise which cuts of material are better to choose,after all, the width of the rolls, for the most part, is standard, which cannot be said about the width of the rooms in houses.

Along the way, when you go to buy a covering, buy something with which to cut the carpet. In other words. You will need a specialized knife and a trimming template. This “set” is much more convenient to use than a kitchen cleaver and a meter ruler or, even worse, a universal “level”. In addition, you will now know exactly what is more convenient to cut the carpet when flooring, and you will be proud to share advice with neighbors and colleagues.

The next stage of work is the preparation of the floor. Of course. The floor is thoroughly washed, removed, aging the paint, if any. After that, a layer of antifungal protective coating is applied. Double-sided adhesive tape is lined on the washed dry floor (without tearing off the protective layer of the paper). Further, the carpet is spread in the room as evenly as possible, but without trying to fit it under the wall, rather on the contrary - with an overlap.

When the cover is precisely fitted and cut, it is fixed on the previously laid double-sided adhesive tape and secured along the walls with sills and skirting boards. The whole process of laying carpet in a small room usually takes 1-2 days, since the material initially rolled into a roll needs to be spread out so that it evens out and does not fit into bumps later.

Even if the sides of the room are even and the corners are perfectly straight, it is still impossible to lay carpet without the use of appropriate tools that will make this work less time-consuming.

To place the cut carpet on the floor, grasp it by a corner or edge and pinch it between your legs, then use one-leg kicks to pull it in the direction you want it until it is completely flat on the floor. At the same time, keep in mind that the entrance to the walls should be 5-6 cm so that this piece can then be cut off.

Do not move the lined carpeting any more, but place a load on top.

Start cutting from corners using the trapezoidal blade of your utility knife. Use this blade to pierce the cover in the corner and cut up to the edge of the cover.

Then, with a wide spatula, fit the covering tightly to the corner between the wall and the floor to make a right angle. The clearer the right angle between the floor and the wall, the tighter the trimmed edge adheres to the wall.

Now, using a knife, you can cut off the parts of the carpet that protrude from the floor. With a trimming tool, you can check whether the job is being done correctly.

HELPFUL TIP: The harder you stick the double-sided carpet tape, the tighter it will hold. You can press it with a piece of covering, and knock the carpet itself in the place of gluing with a mallet.

How to cut a carpet yourself. How to trim the edges of your carpet.

Even carpet that is carefully looked after can be accidentally damaged. The carpet can be burned with cigarette ash. The sharp end of a broken toy that has been dropped can cut the carpet fibers down to the base. And stains from some liquids stubbornly resist shampoos and stain removers. But, if you have carpet scraps and some inexpensive tools at your disposal, you can safely and discreetly repair your carpet.

Hide the scraps if you're laying carpet, or ask your dealer if you're buying a house with carpets. If no cuttings remain, you can cut off some of the carpet in invisible places, such as under cabinets. Minor damage can be repaired by repairing the carpet pile or loop.If you do not have any carpet scraps, pull the threads around the edges of the carpet from the edges.

Despite the fact that most repair methods are not difficult, they require patience. For example, take your time when replacing carpet threads; The best results will be obtained by sewing one thread per stitch in the damaged area. Apply the glue carefully so that excess does not get onto the surface of the carpet.

Before cutting the patch, make sure it matches the pattern and grain direction of the damaged area. Always try to use the smallest piece of carpet first so that if you make a mistake, there is always material to correct the mistake. And if this is your first time doing work, take the time to practice on unnecessary trims before you start working on the carpet itself.

Close the edge with a plinth

In order for the flooring to lie flat, first it must be properly cut. Cutting should only be done with special tools, we will consider each of them.

Electric shears

This versatile tool is specially designed for trimming carpets and linoleum. Its cost is 1000 rubles, at least. Unlike an ordinary knife, electric shears have the following properties:

  • safety while working with floor material;
  • ease of use and high quality of work;
  • compactness;
  • ergonomic design;
  • This tool is powered by rechargeable batteries, so it is independent of the mains supply.

Other tools

The choice of a cutting tool will, of course, depend on the preferences of the owner, but the consequences can also be different, because irregularities can ruin the canvas.

To trim the flooring under the skirting board, spread the carpet along the longest wall in the room, back to back without overlap.

The material should be well smoothed, while eliminating all irregularities and waves, you can even crush some places with the load. Then fit the canvas along three other walls and, using a cutting tool, carefully make a puncture at the junction of the wall and floor, moving from bottom to top.

After the cut, you will be able to mark the points to cut the excess material along the walls. Further, carefully pressing the floor covering to the floor, we cut off the excess, while every 10 cm we check the correctness of the measurements.

In doorways, carpet trimming is done in the same way.

Distinctive features of a carpet or a carpet from a finished carpet are that:

  • the carpet does not have a completely finished ornament or drawing,
  • produced and sold in a roll,
  • when sold, it is measured in running meters,
  • has a raw edge.

If the carpet in your room will lie adjacent to the walls, then the best way to close its edges is to hide them under the baseboard. To do this, you need to cut the covering with a sharp knife or scissors clearly along the perimeter of the room and fix it with a plinth. There are two types of skirting boards for this purpose: simple skirting boards and special carpet skirting boards.

When using a simple skirting board, the coating is applied directly underneath it. And when using a special skirting board, a narrow strip is cut off from the main piece of carpet, which is glued to this special skirting board, on top of the carpet strip is covered with a decorative strip.

How to cut a thick carpet. Steps

1

Choose the rug you will be making your rug from. If you want to make a rug with a pattern, select the shades that you will use.

2

Cut a piece of rug for the background by placing the rug on corrugated cardboard or other surface that cannot be damaged when cut with a blade. Use a knife with a blade to cut a small rug, press hard. You may have to swipe the knife twice.

The carpet used for the pattern should be the same type and texture as the background mat.

Make a template for the shapes used to create the drawing on paper. Brown paper bags or food grade paper are great for this.

Place the templates on the backs of the respective carpet pieces and trace the outlines of each with a marker pen.

Place the rug face down on the corrugated cardboard and lay out the pattern template. Circle it with a marker pen.

Remove the cut areas of the rug and replace them with the pieces you cut out earlier. Work from the back of the carpet, pressing the cut pieces into place.

You will likely have a lot of carpet lint visible on the underside of the rug. They can be pushed into the rug by taking a flat screwdriver and running it around the edges where the rug ends.

Cut a piece long enough so that it can stretch around the entire perimeter of the rug. Apply a line of carpet glue around the edges of the carpet and lay in an edge of 1.3 cm.

Turn the carpet right-side up, apply a drop of carpet glue in the corners and about 1.3 cm at the top of the carpet. Pull the edging up along the edge of the carpet and on top of a bead of glue, press firmly.
