You still need to start by choosing a variety of roses for cutting. This is done taking into account the size of the bud of a particular variety, its shape, color and the number of petals. The length of the stem also matters. These are decorative characteristics. And for a grower engaged in the cultivation of roses on a commercial basis, characteristics such as the resistance of plants of a particular variety to powdery mildew, as well as the resistance of leaves and buds to various damage, are also important - how convenient it will be to transport these roses depends on this.

For a commercial cut, abundantly flowering varieties are most often selected, certainly with long peduncles - at least 80 cm.By the way, the size of the bud when choosing is set because it greatly affects the productivity of rose bushes. Some experts believe that a long stem and a large bud of a variety means a small number of flowers, but small buds, even on long stems, give many flowers. The point is in the peculiarities of photosynthesis in each such case.

Returning to the characteristics of commercial varieties, it is worth noting that you need to choose buds with a large number of petals - 45-70 pieces. In addition, it is advisable to give preference to those varieties whose flowers slowly open in the sun, as well as those that can retain color after cutting even without access to light - this is important given the need for transportation.

The shape of the bud is also important. Experienced flower growers can tell that buyers, even on a subconscious level, choose roses based on two factors - the color and shape of the flower, and most choose the classic version, when the flower resembles a tall glass. Whereas original shapes, such as those with a raised center, are in less demand. From this point of view, Ravel (with tall, deep pink buds), Vendetta (with large snow-white flowers) and Princess Anna (these are white roses with a pink border and classic buds) are good choices. Some florists recommend varieties such as Sandra and Cardinal because they produce a stable “harvest”, that is, they bloom frequently and profusely, providing cutting throughout the season.

In general, at present, about a dozen new varieties appear on the market every year, many of them are considered "copyright" (and receive copyright names), so you need to carefully study their characteristics in each specific case.

All these varieties are resistant to powdery mildew, which guarantees the preservation of the presentation of the flower even when grown in not the most favorable conditions, that is, in autumn or early spring.

Why is resistance to mechanical damage and vase resistance important for commercial cultivation? Because this allows you to significantly increase the geography of sales and transport flowers over a long distance. If the buds and leaves are not resistant to mechanical damage, then it will be possible to sell flowers only in local markets (where opportunities are always limited). Insufficient vase resistance can be acquired, but for specific varieties it can also be genetic, so this issue needs to be clarified. With a low indicator, the period for the sale of flowers will be greatly reduced.

For commercial cultivation of cut roses, the method of growing flowers, and the method of planting them, and even the type of substrate used in this case, are important. This directly affects the duration of the productive period of these plants. While the parameters of greenhouses and the quality of engineering and technological systems have an impact on the quality of flowers in general. You can choose a variety of roses that is ideally suited for the main parameters and ruin it with improper agricultural technology and inattention to its needs.

Non-commercial solution

In addition, the reparability of flowering will allow you to cut flowers several times per season.

Choice of colors

While the rest is purely a matter of personal preference in non-commercial growing, color combinations are worth considering. Roses in a vase only look beautiful if the bright colors don't mix with each other. Compositions of flowers of the same variety and shade look very elegant. Flowers of pastel colors are beautifully combined with the addition of several bright shades. An example of such a combination is a duet of neutral yellow and pronounced burgundy colors. Correct cultivation of cut roses

In the natural environment, single-flowered roses are an exception. Even in large-flowered hybrid tea roses, several adventitious are formed near the apical bud, which can also fully bloom. However, if you want only the apical bud to develop, then the adventitious will have to be incised, and at a time when they are the size of a pea. Then the scars will heal on time, and by the time of flowering they will become invisible at all.

Some varieties of multi-flowered climbing roses last longer in a vase than hybrid tea. In this case, the notch principle is applied in reverse. A long stem is one of the main features of cut rose varieties. The basis for growing cut roses is laid during spring pruning. A strong, long shoot should be cut shorter, leaving 3-4 buds on it.

When growing cut roses, there are no unambiguous rules for pruning during the flowering period. How long is the stem of a rose cut? Maximum or required?

The longer the cut stem, the poorer the photosynthesis. When depriving the stem of the leaves, keep in mind that the assimilation surface decreases with each removed leaf. Because of this, the remaining buds will be closer to the base, and the rate of their development will slow down.

The next flowering period will take longer. In short, for the correct cultivation of cut roses, it is undesirable to shorten the extra-long stem, because before putting the rose in a vase, it is usually cut in half.

If you want to decorate your garden with a flower bed of roses, do not cut all the flowers. Cut only 2-3 flowers from dense bushes so that the deciduous mass provides good photosynthesis and, therefore, the production of nutrients needed by the plant.

And if you cut off all the flowers, you will deprive the rose of supplies, and it will take much more time and energy to rest and re-bloom.

The perfect moment to cut flowers

The ideal time to cut flowers is determined by how long the rose will sit in the vase without losing its freshness.If you see that the sepals have blossomed and taken a horizontal position, and the first petal begins to flake off, it's time to cut it off. Semi-double roses, regardless of variety, can be cut at an earlier stage of flowering, and double roses at a later stage.

The weather matters too. If it is hot and dry outside, the roses can be cut early in the flowering stage, but if it is cool and damp, then it is better to wait and cut the flowers later.

The optimal time of day for cutting is early morning. At this time, roses do not suffer from a lack of moisture, foliage and stems look incredibly fresh, because the pressure in the vascular system of the plant is high.

However, from the point of view of plant physiology, the time after noon is considered more appropriate, because at this hour the plant's reserve of nutrients is greater. Having chosen the time, it remains to cut the roses correctly, prepare them for a vase and, finally, place them in water.

To keep your roses safe and to prevent flowers from wilting prematurely, avoid drafts and direct sunlight. If this does happen, then in most cases the flowers can be saved by pruning under water.
