Natural species perspective for landscaping

Most of the natural species of chubushnik, and there are about 50 of them, are representatives of the temperate zone, although no more than 4–5 are found in large numbers in Russian gardens. Despite the abundance of flowering varietal material, semi-wild plants with small simple flowers adequately occupy their niche and are in no hurry to concede it. Among their advantages are natural endurance and vitality, adaptability to cold climates, annual and long flowering, rich aroma.

  • Common mock orange is a multi-stemmed, vigorous shrub, in adult form forms a sprawling fountain 3-4 m high. It opens the flowering period of garden jasmines. The flowers are simple, white with a light cream shade, fragrant. Among the advantages of the species is winter hardiness (up to -25⁰ C). The genotype of the plant formed the basis for many varieties, the first of which was the Virginian or Virginian mock-orange.
  • Ch. Large-flowered came to Russia more than two hundred years ago. As the name suggests, the main advantage is the large snow-white flowers, although the aroma is weaker than that of C. ordinary. It will bloom two weeks later, but the outfit does not drop for almost a month.
  • Ch. Fluffy is unusual with a narrow crown shape with vertically growing shoots. The flowers are medium-sized, with a faint aroma, more bell-shaped in shape than others. It is distinguished by an abundance of inflorescences located not only at the top, but also along the entire length of the shoots of past years. Blooms almost all of July.
  • Chubushnik is a wreath, a welcome guest in the gardens of the Moscow region, where it is more often represented by dwarf and variegated forms. In its natural form, it is also good - slender, spreading, the flowers are quite large (up to ø4.5 cm), with a creamy shade, they smell delicious. Withstands low temperatures (-25⁰C), in case of freezing, quickly recovers.
  • Small-leaved - a low (up to 1.5 m) shrub, during flowering completely covered with small flowers smelling of strawberries with notes of pineapple. It formed the basis of many Lemoine varieties.

Note! Sometimes Lemoine's chubushniki are distinguished as a separate species. This is a group of varieties and hybrids bred by the French company Lemoine on the basis of wild plants - Ch. Ordinary, small-leaved, etc. It is represented by a large assortment with double and semi-double flowers.

Beautiful flowering varieties

When choosing a chubushnik for a garden, it is difficult not to get lost in the abundance of varieties. They can be conditionally divided into two groups - with simple flowers and multi-petal (double, semi-double). The former are usually more fragrant, the latter more elegant. Although there are exceptions, especially among the old Lemoine and Vekhov varieties - terry and pleasantly smelling.

With simple colors

Varietal jasmine with simple flowers in many ways resembles natural species, but does not repeat them, but represents an improved version.

  • Avalanche is one of the first varieties of Lemoine, which received the popular name for its recognizable smell strawberry mock-mushroom. A bush up to 1.5 in height consists of thin skeletal stems and many drooping shoots, which, under the weight of the inflorescences, tilt to the ground. This creates the effect of an avalanche coming down - this is how the name sounds when translated from French. It blooms for a long time - 27–34 days, but is afraid of frost below 15⁰ С.
  • Arctic is another jasmine with simple snow-white flowers, collected in 5-7 pieces per inflorescence. Owners of small gardens will like it, since the bush near the Arctic is compact, does not exceed 1.5 m in height. the best varieties of jasmine

    Variety Arctic - surprisingly, the white color is so cold that it really resembles a snowy desert

  • Chubushnik Starbright obtained on the basis of Ch. It is characterized by a dense, densely leafy crown, disintegrating at the top. Large flowers, reaching 5.5 cm in diameter, are collected in several pieces in a brush, located in the upper part of the shoot. Looks beautiful in a single fit.
  • Junnat. This variety is interesting for its unusual elongated petals, collected in large (ø4.5 cm), white flowers with a golden center.The bush retains its decorative effect for a month, and all this time exudes the aroma of freshly picked strawberries.
  • Chubushnik Airborne assault - a Vekhi creation, the name retains an echo of the wartime hard times - the variety was created in 1942. A simple creamy white corolla with golden stamens really resembles a parachute canopy. There are so many flowers with slightly drooping fragrant petals that strong erect shoots bend under their weight. Blooms in early June. the best varieties of jasmine

Interesting! The French variety Avalanche was improved by the Soviet breeder N. Vekhov. This is how the Snow Avalanche chubushnik turned out. He "added" winter hardiness to it - the new variety tolerates frosty winters more easily, and is one of the first to bloom.

With multi-petal (double) flowers

Terry chubushniki won the hearts of more than one gardener. They are so elegant that even the lack of scent in some cultivars does not diminish their popularity. On the contrary, it makes the culture available, for example, to allergy sufferers.

  • Chubushnik Snow storm is a strong, tall (up to 3 m) shrub with small but double flowers. Dazzling white fluffy inflorescences from a distance resemble freshly fallen snow flakes. Elongated, drooping, like wet petals work for this association. Belongs to the category of winter-hardy varieties, can be grown without shelter. the best varieties of jasmine

  • Chubushnik Virginal is a veteran among terry varieties, who began his march across Europe more than 100 years ago. Vertical shoots form a fireworks bush 2–2.5 m high, decorated with loose tassels, each of which contains up to 9 fluffy bells. Winter hardiness is good, but not for winters with 40-degree frosts.
  • Chubushnik Ermine mantle will appeal to lovers of low-growing compact shrubs. Only 0.8–1 m high, it grows a large number of thin lateral branches with generative buds, due to which the whole bush is covered with flowers in summer. Corolla 2.5–3 cm in diameter consists of two rows of petals, the inner ones being narrower than the outer ones. The ermine mantle has the longest flowering period - up to 1.5 months. the best varieties of jasmine

    The flowing whips of the mock-orange Manteau d'Ermin are very similar to ermine tails.

  • Chubushnik Pearl got its name for the unusual pearlescent shine of the petals, collected in thick milky-white roses up to 6 cm in diameter. The bush itself is medium-sized, bright green, blooms in the second half of June. Another feature of the variety is a pleasant vanilla aroma. the best varieties of jasmine

  • Chubushnik Mont Blanc is a large spreading shrub; in adult form, skeletal shoots slightly droop, as if forming an arch. Creamy fragrant flowers are collected in bouquets of 3 to 9 pieces, retain their decorative effect for 3–3.5 weeks. One of the Lemoine varieties that has successfully passed the test in the conditions of the middle lane.
  • Chubushnik Komsomolets stands out against the background of other terry varieties because of the early onset of flowering (almost simultaneously with the Snow Avalanche). Its flowers are graceful, with narrow, slightly curved petals. They are collected in short and dense clusters located at the tops of last year's shoots.
  • Chubushnik Shneeshturm is a young generation descended from the Virginal variety. A tall three-meter bush with thin weeping shoots is spectacular in bloom. Huge fluffy bouquets are assembled from large (ø4.5–5 cm) pure white flowers, similar to a semi-dispersed rose. the best varieties of jasmine

  • Chubushnik Minnesota Snowflake is a slender two-meter shrub with snow-white flowers, collected in bunches of 5 pieces. The variety is recognizable by the shape of the flower - the round petals of the outer row of the corolla frame the narrow inner ones. Among other advantages - frost resistance, early flowering.
  • Chubushnik Zhirandol is a low, compact variety with good resistance to adverse weather factors. The flowers are large and densely double, when closed they resemble rosebuds. The smell is subtle, but pleasant. the best varieties of jasmine

It is interesting! The non-flowering, low-growing varieties of chubushniks - Gnome and Dwarf, bred by Vekhov as a curb shrub stand apart. This is a great alternative to box trees, which are not quite suitable for our climate.

Jasmine Varieties Fair

Everyone understands the concept of the best varieties of chubushnik in their own way. Someone puts decorative qualities in the first place. The further to the north the region, the more important is the winter hardiness of the culture. And the owners of small gardens appreciate compact forms in plants. Let's try to approach the selection of varieties of flowering shrubs in a complex manner.

Winter hardy

Many natural species of shrubs and what we call folk selection "walk" in Russian gardens. This garden jasmine is most adapted to cold winters, almost does not freeze out. Of the natural species, Ch. Ordinary, Ch. Crown, Ch. Fluffy are adapted to the conditions of the middle zone.

Further, in the rating of endurance, there is a mock-orange of domestic varieties with simple flowers, they are more winter-hardy than terry ones. Yunnat, Airborne Assault, Arctic, Snow Avalanche will have more chances of survival in the cold winter. But the Lemoine Avalanche (Avalanche) is unlikely to withstand more than -15⁰ С.

Terry varieties are initially more pampered and capricious, they freeze more often, especially young shoots. Of the Lemoine mockers in Russia, Ermine mantle, Mont Blanc, Dam Blanche, Innocent, Minnesota Snowflake, Girandole have taken root well. Winter-hardy domestic varieties from the terry collection - Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Moonlight, Academician Komarov, Ballet of Moths, Snowstorm.

Fragrant

For gourmets who love delicious aromas in flowers, they will like the varieties of chubushnik with a strong smell. The undisputed leader among these is Avalanche. Intense strawberry aroma with an admixture of pineapple in hybrids Airborne, Junnat, Bouquet Blanche, Mont Blanc, Snow avalanche, Erectus, the Pearl variety smells of vanilla.

Note! Very beautiful, but almost no smell of chubushniks Academician Komarov Ballet of Moths, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Charm, Elbrus.

Bicolor

Now it has become fashionable to plant two-color varieties of jasmine. There are not so many of them, almost all of them are created on the basis of C. ordinary, which has a pale pink spot at the base of the corolla. Here are some representatives of this group.

  • Bicolor is a low bush, dotted with single and collected in inflorescences of 2-3 pieces of large white flowers with a pink base.
  • Chubushnik Bel Etoile is one of the most fashionable two-tone varieties in Europe. The flower itself is medium in size, simple, but the crimson center gives it a special effect.
  • Unusual is our variety and fully justifies its name. It is frost-resistant, flowers with a bright purple center, have a strong and pleasant smell.

Adapted

The beauty of this shrub is that most varieties thrive in our climate. Frozen bushes are fairly easy to restore. Unfortunately, the threat to the chubushnik is not so much a stable minus as a sharp cold snap or return frosts in the spring.

When choosing varieties of chubushnik for a garden in the Moscow region, proceed from their winter hardiness. The most hardy cultivars in this regard are Snowstorm, Airborne assault, Snow avalanche, Moonlight, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya. Of Lemoine's chubushniks, the hybrid Pyramidal, Mont Blanc, Glacier will not freeze.

Russian varieties of chubushnik are also suitable for the Urals, but Lemoine hydrides will regularly freeze out. Nevertheless, if you really want to, there is an option to plant undersized forms, for example, Ermine mantle, Girandol, Camomile and cover them for the winter.

Now that you have read the photo and description of the chubushnik shrub, it's time to learn about the agricultural technology of growing this shrub.

Growing a chubushnik shrub: planting and care (with photo)

Landing features. The distance between plants in groups is 0.5-1.5 m, in a single-row living hedge, plants are planted every 0.5 m, in well-lit places. They bloom worse in the shade than in the sun. For ease of care, the planting of the chubushnik shrub should be carried out to a depth of 50-60 cm, the root collar cannot be deepened by more than 2-3 cm, since in a deeper position it can rot. It tolerates transplanting well, since the roots hold a clod of earth well. Chubushniki prefer fertile soils: leafy soil, humus, sand (3: 2: 1). Drainage - crushed stone and sand with a layer of 15 cm.

Top dressing. It is recommended to pour 1 bucket of slurry on one bush annually (1:10). In the 3rd year after planting, mineral fertilizers are applied: 1 tbsp. spoon of urea, 2 tbsp.tablespoons of superphosphate, 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate, which are diluted in 10 liters of water and consumed for 1-2 plants. After flowering, 1 m2 is fed with 1 matchbox of superphosphate and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate or 1 cup of wood ash.

Pruning. During care, when growing a mock orange, annual thinning and removal of faded inflorescences are required immediately after flowering. Every 2-3 years old shoots are removed, leaving those younger than 10-12 years old. This rejuvenation of the crown leads to more abundant flowering and strong growth. Always remove frozen shoots on the stump. After that, a strong growth is formed, and the next year flowers appear on it.

Preparing for winter. For most chubushniks, shelter for the winter is not required. Some varieties require a sheltered location. In severe winters, the ends of annual shoots can freeze slightly, but after pruning, the plant quickly restores the crown and the ability to bloom.

The well-known chubushnik, or, as it is often called, garden jasmine is always popular among gardeners. It combines such important qualities as unpretentiousness, resistance to diseases and pests, good winter hardiness, annual flowering of stunning beauty and a branded scent.

Although the mock orange is called jasmine, it is systematically far from it and even belongs to another family - hydrangea. And real jasmine belongs to the olive family; only the aroma of flowers makes it related to jasmine. The genus Chubushnik (Philadelphus) includes about 60 species. All are deciduous, multi-stemmed shrubs with thin gray or brown peeling bark, opposite leaves and white flowers.

Quite a strange Russian name for the shrub comes from the word "chubuk", tk. strong stems with a soft core were used to make shafts (smoking pipes). Much more romantic sounds the Latin name - Philadelphus, which literally means "brotherly". This is probably due to the fact that the shrub has closely spaced shoots. The most famous species: pallid or common (Ph. Pallidus), small-leaved (Ph. Microphyllus), large-flowered (Ph. Grandiflorus), Caucasian (Ph. Caucasicus), odorless (Ph. Inodorus), fluffy (Ph. Pubescens) and dr.

In the literature, as an independent species, the crown mock-orange (Ph. Coronarius) is often found. The well-known dendrologist A.I. Kolesnikov, when describing it, refers it to the common mock-mushroom species. However, in garden centers, chubushnik saplings are sold precisely as varieties of crown mock-orange, so we will take Kolesnikov's opinion into account and give the dispute about synonyms to botanists.

Varieties with a wide range of traits, differing in height, doubleness of flowers and intensity of aroma.

For landscaping, both species and their garden forms, as well as varietal ones, are used. Of course, numerous varieties, which are complex hybrids, are much more often used. As a result of 200 years of breeding work, varieties with a wide range of traits have been obtained, differing in height, doubleness of flowers and intensity of aroma. There are even varieties with no aroma at all, which is very important for allergy sufferers and those who simply do not like strong odors. Chubushniki also differ in the timing of flowering. If you plant several different species and varieties of this shrub, you can enjoy flowering from late May to late July, although each individual variety usually blooms for about 20 days.

Practical varieties

One of the most popular species is the common mock-orange (Ph. Pallidus). This shrub grows in southern Europe, the Caucasus and Asia Minor. This species is the first of all chubushniks to begin flowering, usually in Ukraine it happens in late May - early June, blooms for about 20 days.Common chubushnik is resistant to air pollution, unpretentious to soil, frost-resistant.

Its height reaches 3 m, shoots are brownish with opposite, oval-elliptical large leaves up to 8 cm long, pubescent below. The flowers are cream or white, about 3-4 cm in diameter, very fragrant, in racemose or paniculate inflorescences of 5-7 pieces. It blooms profusely, covering the bush with a white cap of fragrant flowers.

The species has interesting garden forms:

f. aurea - the foliage of young leaves is yellow-golden, then turns yellow-green, such a shrub looks great against the background of other bushes and trees with dark green foliage;
f. argentea-marginata - variegated form, has green leaves with a white border around the edge;
f. flora-plena, f. duplex, f. primulae-flora - have double flowers;
f. grandiflora - large-flowered form;
f. salicifolia - narrow-leaved form;
f. pumila - dwarf form, its compact bushes are not higher than 50 cm.

In the literature, Ph. Coronarius is also often found as an independent species. It is with this name that we most often come across when buying a chubushnik. The crown mock-orange Aureus is especially beautiful, thanks to its yellow-green foliage.

Small-leaved chubushnik (Ph. Microphyllus) is a beautiful shrub up to 1.5 m high, originally from North America. Leaves are small, about 2 cm long, lanceolate, pubescent below. In June, the entire bush is strewn with many small flowers (up to 2 cm in diameter) with a delicate aroma of strawberries and pineapple. Flowering lasts about two weeks.

Of great interest is Lemoine's mock-orange (Ph. X lemoinei) - a hybrid of common and small-leaved mock-orange. It is a beautiful shrub with gracefully curved shoots and dark green foliage. The height of the bush is 1.5–2, sometimes up to 3 m. It blooms with white, very fragrant flowers after the common mock orange, usually in June - early July.

Chubushnik Lemoine served as the basis for further selection, as a result, many wonderful varieties were obtained. A special contribution to their creation was made by the Lemoine dynasty of French breeders. It is these varieties that manufacturers offer us more often than others.

Popular Lemoine varieties

They are quite diverse - some fascinate with simple flowers with a delicate strawberry aroma, others impress with large double and fragrant flowers. The varieties differ in the shape of the bush (spreading, spherical, pyramidal, vertical), height (from 1 m to 3 m), as well as the size of the leaves (rather large oval, small elongated, etc.).

Mont blanc - a variety with white small (diameter 2 cm) semi-double flowers and a pronounced strawberry aroma. The bush itself is up to 2 m tall, with large leaves. Blooms in a week after common mock-orange. Blooms during the month from early June to early July. The flowering is so abundant that the bush is completely covered with flowers, like a mountain peak with a snow cap. Winter hardy, good variety for our conditions.

Gletcher - an amazing aromatic variety that can be grown without any problems throughout Ukraine. Blooms at the same time as MontBlanc. The height of the bush is 1.5–2 m, the shoots are strong, straight. During flowering, it looks amazing - large densely double flowers, 5-7 pieces in bunches, form brushes up to 60 cm long. Unfortunately, when blooming, the flowers do not fall off immediately, and this somewhat violates the decorative effect, therefore, if possible, they should be cut off.

Alabasrite - dazzling white semi-double or double flowers in dense paniculate inflorescences 10 cm long form clusters 50 cm long on last year's shoots. Flower diameter about 5 cm. Fragrant variety. It begins to bloom a week later than the common mock-orange. An upright bush with a height of 1.5–1.8 m.

Pyramidal - frost-resistant shrub, has a narrow crown with straight and elastic shoots, height up to 3 m. Large double or semi-double snow-white flowers in inflorescences of 9 pieces. The aroma is faint but refined. Blooms later than all other varieties.A good variety for creating hedges.

Avalanche - flowers with a pronounced aroma of strawberry berries, 3–3.5 cm in diameter, simple, white, single or up to 3 pieces per inflorescence. Blooms profusely in June. Grows a bush up to 1.5 m high with thin, gracefully curved shoots and small leaves. A beautiful variety, but not hardy enough. Cannot withstand temperatures below -15 ° C and may freeze. Shelter is recommended, especially in the first years after planting. For our conditions, a variety similar to it is more suitable snow avalanche breeding N.K. Vekhov, created on the basis of the Lemoine variety Avalanche, but with good frost resistance.

Manteau d hermine - a variety with fragrant cream-colored semi-double flowers up to 3 cm in diameter. A low shrub - 0.8–1.5 m. Flowering lasts a whole month (June - July). Fairly hardy variety.

Enchantenment - is considered one of the best Lemoine varieties. The flowers are large, snow-white and double, appear in dense inflorescences of 9 or more flowers. The aroma is weak, delicate. The beginning of flowering 2 weeks after the common mock-orange, duration is about 20 days. The height of the bush is 1–1.5, sometimes up to 2 m. Suitable for the conditions of Ukraine.

Bouquet blanche - the bush is low, the flowers are large (up to 5 cm), snow-white, densely double, very odorous. In winter, shoots can freeze slightly, it is advisable to cover it.

Belle etoile - a popular variety, forms a lush bush with a height of 1–1.5 m. It attracts attention with its small (2 cm in diameter) simple, but original colored flowers - white with a pink or purple center. In addition, they have a very pleasant delicate strawberry aroma. The variety blooms at the same time as the common mock-orange. Average winter hardiness (USDA: 5 zone). It is advisable to cover.

Dame blanche - has a spreading bush with small leaves, up to 1.6 m high. Semi-double flowers in clusters of 5-7 pieces, fragrant. Frost-resistant variety (up to –25 ° С).

Virginal - a tall shrub with large double white flowers in inflorescences. Fragrant. Blooms in the second half of June - July. Average winter hardiness.
MontBlanc, Gletcher, Alabasrite are considered the most frost-resistant, well-recommended in our climate among Lemoine varieties.

The Soviet dendrologist N.K. Vekhov also made a great contribution to selection in the last century. Thanks to his efforts, on the basis of Lemoine varieties, new, original varieties were created, well adapted to growing in the conditions of central Russia, and even more so they are perfect for growing here. There are some very unusual ones among them. For example, Dwarf - only 30-40 cm high is a non-flowering shrub with a dense crown, which is used to create original borders.

Pearl grade notable for its white, pearlescent sheen, very large double fragrant flowers (up to 6 cm). The bush itself is low with purple shoots.
The wonderful variety Akademik Komarov blooms with even larger - up to 10 cm in diameter - semi-double snow-white flowers, almost odorless. The shrub reaches a height of 2.5 m. It blooms in mid-June - early July.

Chubushnik called Unusual has white flowers with a pink center, which exude a strong strawberry aroma. It looks like a Lemoine variety Belle etoile, but has better frost resistance. Variety Snowballs with its white and double flowers, which really resemble snowballs during flowering, demonstrates an extraordinary profusion of flowering.

Ballet of moths - surprises with the unusual shape of the flowers, and the name fully reflects the character of this variety.

Kazbek - a variety with a pyramidal crown about 2 m high, white double flowers in large inflorescences. The flowers are practically odorless.
It is impossible to list all the varieties, there are many of them, I think that this is enough for a general presentation.

Agrotechnics

As we already wrote, the mock-orange is loved not only for its beauty, but also for its unpretentiousness.Indeed, it will not be difficult to grow this shrub. There are only a few requirements to consider.

Choosing a place. Chubushnik prefers moist loams, but does not tolerate stagnant water and saline soils. It is preferable to choose a sunny place for growing. Although the chubushnik tolerates partial shade, it will bloom in full force only in the sun. For some foreign varieties with insufficient winter hardiness, you need to choose places protected from the northeast wind.

Landing. It is best to plant a mock-orange in autumn or spring before the leaves bloom. When planting, do not deepen the root collar. It is necessary to water it well and mulch it with compost or humus.

Further care is reduced to periodic feeding (especially if the plant is weakened), watering and pruning.

1. 2-3 years after planting, the shrub is fed in the spring with a complex mineral fertilizer. At the end of summer, it is good to feed with potassium or wood ash.
2. The plant tolerates drought well, but watering in spring and early summer is important for good flowering.
3. Chubushnik is planted for many years and to maintain its decorative effect it will be necessary to produce the following types of pruning:

  • formative pruning is done to give the bush a beautiful proportional shape. This is not always required, since usually the bush initially has a beautiful shape;
  • sanitary pruning is carried out annually, while excess trunks are cut out to prevent thickening of the bush. In case of freezing of the shoots in the spring, they are removed;
  • for old bushes that have already lost their decorative effect, anti-aging pruning is used. To do this, in early spring, all the trunks are cut down to the base, leaving only 3-4 pieces, they are cut to a level of 40-50 cm from the ground. The bush is watered and fed, mulched. By the fall, new shoots will grow. Next spring, 2-3 of the strongest shoots of these shoots are left on each stump, which will serve as the basis for a new bush, and the rest are cut off.

When pruning, you need to take into account that the shrub blooms on the shoots of the previous year, therefore, in order not to lose flowering next year, it is recommended to cut the shoots immediately after flowering. In this case, young growths will have time to woody by autumn and lay flower buds.

Chubushnik is especially good for large garden spaces in group plantings, but even on a small plot it will fit well into a cozy corner, not far from the resting place. It can be planted in the most prominent place and for many years admire this beauty at the very beginning of summer, enjoying the jasmine scent.

Conclusions:

1. Chubushnik is an unpretentious and disease-resistant frost-resistant shrub.

2. It has an exquisite aroma, but there are also odorless varieties.

3. Blooms for about 20 days.

4. Prefers moist loams, but does not tolerate stagnant water and saline soils.

5. When doing pruning, you need to take into account that the shrub blooms on the shoots of the last year.
