Growing asparagus
Asparagus is one of the healthiest, most delicious and expensive vegetable crops. Asparagus is considered the early vegetable of the new season as it is harvested in April.
Asparagus is a dioecious perennial plant that is very easy to grow in the garden, but still best when there is plenty of room to grow it. When a plant reaches its peak of fruiting, it can produce about 12 shoots in one season - this is enough for only 2 servings of a vegetable side dish. This is why asparagus is considered such an expensive product.
Growing asparagus is in great demand, despite its high cost. It is the tender young shoots of asparagus that have just emerged from the ground that are used for food. Asparagus has healthy and gastronomic properties, in addition, it is also an ornamental crop, which can often be found in flower arrangements.
Growing asparagus should take place in a sunny, calm place, preferably at the back of the garden. This culture can live in one place for up to 25 years without the need for replanting.
You can sow asparagus with seeds in early spring, but it will be faster if you use the root of the plant or a young plant.
Caring for asparagus is very simple. It is necessary to weed by hand, fertilize the plant before and after fruiting, mulching is also useful.
Already at the age of three, asparagus produces shoots that are edible. For harvesting, a special knife is used, thanks to which the shoots are cut underground at a depth of 2 cm.
Of course, it is best to consume the plant fresh, as after heat treatment or conservation, asparagus loses its beneficial properties.
