How to eliminate the smell of slime?
If you are not sure how to get rid of the slime smell, try the tips below:
- Wash the slime. Remove large particles of adhering dirt and dust from the slime. Rinse under running water and leave in fresh air in a ventilated area for 1-2 hours. After the specified period, the unpleasant smell will leave the toy.
- Place the slime in a container of soda solution. Pre-rinse the handgums and knead to remove excess liquid. Dissolve a pinch of baking soda in 1-2 tsp. water, pour the mixture into a container, put a slime in it, close and refrigerate. Soda is good at eliminating odors. After 2 hours, the slime can be played.
- Dry with a hair dryer. If the slime is sour and smells unpleasant, direct a warm stream of air at it with a hair dryer. The slime will soften. Rinse it under running water and expose it to fresh air.
It is considered not the best solution to add perfume or other ingredients with strong odors (shampoo, detergent, soap) to the handgam. Perfumes are made on the basis of alcohol, which hardens the toy and loses its properties.
Use hygiene products to freshen up a homemade slime if the substance is already present in the slime. But as a method to get rid of the smell of store-bought slime, the method will not work.
Important! Store-bought slime with a strong smell of chemicals, moldy or expired does not make sense to "save". Throw it away and buy (make) a new toy .. What to do if the slime stinks - watch the video:

It is worth asking how to get rid of the smell of slime if the handgam is almost new, has elasticity, viscous and resilient. The unpleasant odor emitted is the result of a long stay in the container (not mold!). If you are sure that the slime will not harm the child, refresh it and keep playing.
What if the slime shrinks?
When you do not know what to do, if the slime decreases, try to increase it with the help of improvised means. To increase the volume of the handgam, use water, salt or soda, glue, hygiene products.
Ways to increase the slime:
- Saline solution... When you have not decided what to do if the slime has decreased in size, refer to the simple method of soaking the toy in salt water. Prepare 100 ml of solution by adding 2 tbsp. l. salt. Stir, pour the product into a container and dip the slime into it. Let it sit for 4-5 minutes, take it out and wipe it off with a paper towel.
- Water with glue... When you do not know what to do if the slime begins to shrink, try an adhesive solution. Take 1 tsp. office glue or PVA, dilute in 50 ml of water. Stir and dip in the slime solution. After 2-3 minutes, when the slime is saturated with liquid, take it out and dry it.
- 10% alcohol solution... This method is suitable for shop handgam. To rehabilitate him, dilute 1 part of alcohol (lotion, perfume) in 10 parts of water. Lower the slime and hold until it swells. Repeat after 2 days.
- Liquid soap, cream, shaving foam, shampoo... When the slime decreases, its composition will tell you what to do. The fix method is suitable for homemade slimes. Take the substance present in the handgam. Spread it out on a hard surface with a flat cake and pour 1-2 tsp. of the selected tool. "Seal" the slime and knead it with your hands. The substances are absorbed and the slime is enlarged. When, after manipulation, the toy sticks to your hands, add 2-3 drops of sodium tetraborate, soda or starch.

Causes of the unpleasant smell of slime
The unpleasant smell of slime is explained both by the conditions of its use and storage. A crumpled, crumpled toy, repeatedly falling on dirty asphalt or on the ground, absorbs many different smells. Even if you sprinkle it with perfume or deodorant, after a while the aromas will split into components, and the slime will stink worse than before.
Improper storage - open in a warm room or in the freezer of the refrigerator - affects the chemical composition of the toy, moisture evaporates from it, and therefore the smell changes. Slime should be stored in a tightly closed container in a cool place. Any jar will work, for example, the one in which it was sold, or plastic jars for creams, a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
For better preservation, you can add a little water to the jar so that the slime maintains its water balance and does not change the smell.
For self-production, there are dozens of slime recipes. The general principle is the same: you need glue and filler. Anything can play their role. And to give a more attractive look, you can add dyes and decorations to the composition: sequins, sparkles, balls, small toys.
Consistency will vary depending on the materials used. Some are jelly-like, transparent or colored, others are denser, better stretchable.
Recipes:
- 100 g of plasticine, 15 g of gelatin, 250 ml of water. Soak gelatin in 200 ml of room temperature water. When the gelatin swells, slowly heat it to a boil and remove it from the stove. The gelatin cools down, at this time, knead the plasticine until soft, add the gelatin and mix until smooth. Put in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
- 50 ml shampoo, 1 tsp. Sahara. Stir until smooth, put in the freezer for a couple of hours. After thawing, the slime is ready.
- 1 tbsp dishwashing gel, 1 tbsp. soda. Stir, add 1 tbsp. any hand cream and food coloring. Stir and put in a bag in the refrigerator for 4 hours.
Decorations can be added to any composition as desired. The shelf life of self-made toys is less than purchased ones. And their smell can deteriorate faster.
What to do if mold appears on the slime?
With short-term contact, household mold is not dangerous to humans. But prolonged contact with even a small dose of the fungus can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, and the ingress of spores on the mucous membrane is fraught with allergic reactions. However, the most serious consequences are the accidental ingestion of an edible moldy slime. In plant foods, the fungus releases aflatoxins. In small doses, this toxin can cause liver pain and seizures, and in large doses, it is fatal.
Heat treatment will not kill the spores of the fungus, therefore, as soon as the first signs of the disease appear on the slime, it must be disposed of immediately, especially if there are small children in the house. It is a mistake to believe that amputation of the infected area of the slime with mold will help. As a rule, even before the start of active growth of the mycelium, the spores have already spread throughout the mass of anti-stress. In order not to risk it, the entire toy should be thrown away immediately, and preferably not in a household trash can, but in a bin on the street, after wrapping it in a dry sheet of paper.
You should not regret the container from the slime; throw it away after the spoiled toy. But if you still need to keep the dishes, then after removing the slime, they should be thoroughly washed with a degreasing agent and dried well. After drying, the container can be treated with an antiseptic. Home disinfection should be carried out with gloves and a respirator.
Note! In nature, there are also less dangerous types of mold, for example, used to make certain types of cheese. However, you cannot count on the presence of such mold spores on your slime.
It is better not to risk it and dispose of the whole mass.
How to remove / improve the smell of slime?
What if the slime smells bad? First of all, you need to find out why this happened.
If there are foreign inclusions, dirt in the body, you need to get rid of them by selecting and removing dirty areas. Then the toy should be rinsed in warm running water and kneaded for a few minutes so that the water will wash it completely. Add 1 tablespoon to the water. soda and place the slime there for an hour.
If a slime develops a moldy smell, it is better to get rid of it, as mold can be dangerous to human health.
In other cases, you can try to get rid of the smell with disinfectants. After washing in warm running water, the antistress is treated with a 10% aqueous solution of alcohol, light pink potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide or tea tree oil.
Contrary to expectations, the addition of aromatic agents - perfumes, deodorants, essential oils - produces only a short-term effect. Then an indescribable mixture of smells appears, which can hardly be called pleasant. It means that the time has come to make or buy a new toy, of a different color, texture, emitting unexpected sounds and with a new pleasant aroma.
