Types and varieties of peonies

How to grow a peony

The flower has won numerous exhibitions. This herbaceous milk-flowering plant blooms incredibly profusely. Its large buds, opening up, reach a diameter of sixteen centimeters. Their shape is very similar to a rose: the same tall folded petals, which are twisted in the central part into several “tops”.

Carol's variety is medium early. It is perfect for decorating an area both in single or group compositions, and for cutting. Landscape designers use this beautiful flower as a spectacular accent in a flower bed. It is sometimes planted as a green hedge along a wall, sidewalk, or driveway.

Carol is a peony that prefers fertile, neutral, well-drained soil. During planting, it is not recommended to deepen the root system too deep, since in this case the plant may not bloom. Watering the peony should be moderate. In case of stagnant water, the roots can rot. It blooms in late spring.

Peony Carol is a perennial herbaceous shrub with a dense spreading crown. Forms many shoots, reaching a length of 80 cm. Stems are erect, tough, dark green in color. Under the weight of the flowers, the shoots droop, the bush disintegrates and loses its decorative effect.

The leaf plates are dark green, lanceolate, hard, glossy, with smooth edges. The arrangement of the leaves is alternate, the petioles are long, slightly pubescent.

Peony Carol is a sun-loving plant, therefore it does not tolerate shading well. Only with full-fledged photosynthesis will the culture bloom profusely, quickly build up the root system and green mass. The variety is frost-resistant, withstands a drop in temperature to -35 0C, and also has good drought resistance.

These qualities make it possible to grow the Carol variety throughout the temperate climate. The variety is especially popular with gardeners in the European and Central part of Russia.

Carol peony of medium early flowering period. The buds are formed at the end of May, bloom in the first decade of June. The life cycle of the inflorescence is 7 days, the duration of the flowering period is 15 days. Each stem gives up to three lateral shoots, buds are formed on them.

Abundant flowering, splendor depends on timely feeding and sufficient lighting. If the crop is grown for cutting, the side buds are removed, then the center flower will be larger.

How the Carol variety blooms:

  • flowers are large, double, in diameter - 20 cm;
  • petals are bright red saturated color with a purple tint, the arrangement is folded, uneven;
  • the central part is closed.

An ornamental herbaceous shrub with sufficient lighting can be grown in flowerpots on a balcony or loggia. It must be borne in mind that under the weight of the inflorescences, the peony disintegrates and looks untidy, therefore, you must first take care of the support. The plant is grown outdoors for garden design, combining with many flowering crops that have the same biological requirements:

  • daylilies;
  • veronica;
  • bells;
  • cornflowers;
  • with flowering and ornamental shrubs;
  • hydrangea.

Carol does not combine with roses or other flowers of a red hue, since they will lose their attractiveness against the background of a peony. Peony does not get along well with juniper due to different requirements for the composition of the soil, but with thuja and dwarf forms of spruce it looks perfect.

A few examples of the use of the Carol variety in garden design:

  • registration of the central part of the lawn;
  • planted in combination with different varieties of peonies to frame flower beds;
  • create a color accent in the central part of the flower bed;
  • for the decor of rockeries;

A mix of different varieties of peony with daylily looks good

  • planted on a bed near the building;
  • include in a composition with decorative and flowering plants;

Landing. Peonies can be planted from early April to late May in spring and from late September to November in autumn. For this, holes are dug with a depth and width of 50-60 cm and at a distance of 90-100 cm from each other. Garden soil, compost, humus are poured into the bottom of the pit, and 2 glasses of wood ash are added.

In low places, holes are dug 15-20 cm deeper to make drainage and then fill them with humus. The next layer is covered with ordinary earth from the site and planting material is planted. The root system is evenly distributed over the entire volume, then covered with earth and watered abundantly to compact the earth. Planting depth should be 4-5cm above the renewal buds.

Care. In the first year after planting, the peony may not bloom, since the plant must gain leaf mass. Immediately after flowering, the peonies are fed with a full complex fertilizer. During the dry period, the plant is rarely, but watered abundantly (about 3 buckets of water per adult bush). Mulch the soil regularly. In late autumn, the stems are cut at ground level.

You do not need to cover peonies for the winter.

What colors are there?

The variety of colors and shades of peonies is striking in its magnificence. Every gardener can choose peonies to his taste. In addition to the classic palette, varieties of unusual colors have been bred - green, black.

White peonies are royal varieties that have become the starting point for breeders. The following varieties are spectacular representatives of this color.

Pink peonies are one of the most popular varieties and are loved by flower growers. The gamut is very rich in shades of pink, it ranges from the palest tones to luscious purples.

The brightest representative of the pink group is Sarah Bernhardt. This variety is more than a century old, it is distinguished by a luxurious dense semi-double of large (more than 20 cm) flowers with concave-type petals, the edges of which are distinguished by a lighter shade of pink.

Lilac peonies are quite rare flowers. They cast purple, often have several iridescent tones. A popular representative of this color range is “Altai News”. This domestic variety is highly decorative despite the simple flower shape without terry. The petals are wavy, two-row, the stem is strong, tall, the flowering is not too large, openwork type, abundant, up to 100 flowers per bush, the aroma is strong.

Burgundy is a very popular species among gardeners, although there are not so many varieties in this range. It is quite difficult to bring out the classic tone of burgundy peonies.

Red peonies have one of the most catchy and expressive palettes and look luxurious in the landscape. Flower tones range from cinnabar to bright scarlet.

Yellow peonies are rare, most often they are diluted with splashes of lemon, sand, terracotta. Peonies of these shades were rather difficult to remove, since this pigment is unstable. The best representative of the species is the Lemon Chiffon variety. Bred in Holland, it is distinguished by a spectacular semi-double, turning into double after a few years of flowering. The bud is very large - up to 24 cm, has a light lemon shade with stamens of a darker yellow tone, is not subject to fading, the bush is strong.

Coral - this series of peonies, which was bred in the middle of the twentieth century and immediately gained immense popularity. A distinctive feature of this color is fast and rather strong fading from sunlight. The best representative is Coral Beach.

Blossoming is large - up to 20 cm, can change tone during flowering to peach, sweetish aroma, tall and strong bush.

There are not very many rare flowers of peonies. Most often they are tree-like, but they are also found among garden ones. Original representatives.

  • "Striped Lollipop" - has a dense creamy terry with raspberry and pink streaks. The flowers are large, the bush is tall, they have a floral aroma with fruity notes.
  • "Purple spider" is a non-standard flower, its shade is close to fuchsia, plate-shaped petals, stamens with pink dots, fragrant. Flowering is medium-sized.
  • "Bob" - the flowers of this variety resemble a bomb in shape. The stem is long, with semi-double and double, depending on the flowering period. The shade of the flower is almost black, the size is large.
  • "Green ball" - the flower has the shape of a bomb, bloom with terry, large, the shade of the petals is light green.

Peony Karl Rosenfeld: description of the herbaceous variety

The peony cultivar Karl Rosenfield was developed in China. It is so beautiful that it is considered a national treasure of the country.Peonies also hold a special place in Japanese culture.

This variety was developed in the south of China. However, despite this, the species has excellent cold resistance. Therefore, the plant can be grown in more severe climates. The flower grows poorly only in the Far North.

The flower belongs to the milky-flowered group of herbaceous plants. During development, the bush forms fleshy and large root tubers. In an adult state, the height of the plant is 85–100 cm. Karl Rosenfeld gained immense popularity among flower growers thanks to the beautiful inflorescences that look amazing against the background of the green crown.

Due to its decorative appearance, this variety is often used to decorate front gardens, parks and squares. These flowers grow on any soil. The main thing is that the soil has the necessary level of nutrients. The variety is undemanding to care for and has high frost resistance.

It is worth noting that after planting or transplanting, varietal characteristics appear in a new place only at 2–3 years of age.

Appearance and flowering period

Outwardly, this flower is a herbaceous bush. The crown is formed quite spreading. Openwork leaves are formed on the shoots, the leaf blade of which is beautifully dissected. The leaves are light green at the beginning of the season. Their surface is shiny. The lush crown lasts until late autumn. At the same time, the color of the leaves changes from green to dark green with crimson shades.

The peony of the Karl Rosenfield variety is prized for its inflorescences. The buds of this flower have the following description:

  • flowers are single. They are both semi-double and simple;
  • inflorescences are dense and large. On average, their diameter is about 18 cm;
  • the color of the petals is dark ruby or with purple hues. However, there are varieties with red, pink and white flowers;
  • petals are large, with uneven edges. They are thin, which allows them to bend in a wave-like manner;
  • the buds exude a sweet, unobtrusive and not sugary aroma.

Inflorescences are formed on strong and stable peduncles. Therefore, they do not need additional supports and do not break in strong gusts of wind. In height, peduncles can grow up to 85-100 cm.

This is a medium late variety. It begins to bloom in early July. Long flowering. The inflorescences are able to remain fresh and beautiful for a rather long period in the cut state. To extend this time, sugar or vinegar should be added to the cut flower stalks. Moreover, the water itself must be changed every day.

After flowering is complete, the buds, like most of the shoots, are cut off, and the plant prepares for winter. Due to its high cold resistance, this peony in the southern regions can not be sheltered for the winter, in contrast to areas with a more severe climate.

This variety of peony is grown both as single bushes and in whole groups. This variety is suitable for landscape design when creating mixed plantings. Inflorescences are often used to organize bouquet arrangements.

Nuances of content

To grow such a peony in your country house, you need to know the following nuances of its content:

  • the growing area should be sunny and moderately warm. Drafts must not be allowed;
  • when planting seedlings, you need to ensure that the recovery bud is at a level of 3-5 cm from the existing soil level. If you deviate, flowering will not occur;
  • the optimal soil for planting is fresh and moderately dry, rich in micro- and macro-nutrients;
  • watering is performed regularly as the top layer of the soil dries out;
  • dressing is applied in early spring, before the start of the growing season. During the period of active growth and budding, mineral fertilizers should be used. In the second half of the season, organic matter must be used to feed the bushes;
  • the most dangerous parasites for the peony of this variety will be ants.They slow down flowering and are capable of infecting the plant with pathogenic microflora. Therefore, periodically planting must be sprayed with protective solutions;
  • Wintering in the middle lane is carried out without wrapping and additional shelters.

As you can see, the Karl Rosenfield peony is an unpretentious cultivar in terms of cultivation, which will become a worthy decoration for any garden.

Varieties

In addition to the division into woody and herbaceous species, there are other, more complex classifications of peonies. Due to the fact that the number of varieties has already reached 5 thousand, and every year breeders are breeding more and more new varieties, it is very difficult to classify herbaceous peonies. Most of the modern varieties are bred by breeding the milk-flowered peony. By itself, it is characterized by a large flower of light shades, resistance to cold and disease.

Conventionally, these flowers are divided into pure milky-flowered varieties and hybrids derived from it. They differ:

  • juicy, deep shades of flowering;
  • lush foliage;
  • early flowering.

The classification depending on the type of flowering is considered the simplest. According to the presence and degree of terry, the following groups of plants are distinguished.

  1. Japanese - with large petals in the center and a two-row corolla;
  2. anemone - their corolla is single-row, there are many stamens turning into narrow petals;
  3. typical semi-double - they differ in separate stamens, the corolla is two- or three-row.

  1. spherical - they look like dense bombs or balls, the large petals of which are located horizontally;
  2. hemispherical - resemble saucers with hemispheres, their terry is thick, the petals are not wide, bordering the larger petals along the outer radius;
  3. pink-shaped - thick terry, small flowers, compactly decorated, petals fold into one whole;
  4. semi-pink-shaped - their terry is thick, resembles a rose in appearance, in the center there are stamens in a bunch;
  5. crown - the petals are narrow inside, in the shape of a crown, expanding closer to the edges.

According to the height of the bush, peonies are divided into:

  • low-growing - up to 50 cm;
  • medium - from 50 to 90 cm;
  • high - from 90 cm.

There is another way to subdivide peonies - depending on the timing of flowering:

  • early flowering;
  • medium flowering;
  • late flowering.

There are also rare endangered species, for example, the mountain peony. It is listed in the Red Book, as there is a high risk of its disappearance.

Landing

A peony requires little maintenance as long as it is planted in the right place. These flowers respond very poorly to transplantation, so you should not resort to the procedure if there is no particular need for it.

In most of the country, peonies are planted in autumn: at the end of September and in October, and a little later in the south. Peonies will need to be immersed in the ground six weeks before the first frost, this is how much is needed for the plant to take root. The bushes planted in the spring lag behind in growth by about a year from those planted in the fall.

The soil should be fertile, rich in humus, moist but well-drained. The ideal pH is neutral. The plant needs to provide shelter from strong winds. Plant it away from trees or large shrubs, since peonies do not like to compete for nutrients and moisture.

To plant the tuber, you need a hole 60 cm deep and wide. It is best to add organic material to the bottom, which will serve as top dressing for several years. If the soil is heavy or very sandy, it is additionally enriched with compost. The tuber is immersed in a hole to a depth of 5 centimeters, then covered with soil. It will need to be lightly tamped, thus removing air pockets. After planting, high-quality watering is performed.

Peculiarities

Garden peonies are perennials, the beginning of their breeding in time is comparable to the ancient period of history - then there were already several dozen varieties of them. Most of the varieties and hybrids were bred by breeders in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Peonies owe their name to the ancient Greek god Pean, the healer of the Olympian gods. He treated them from the most difficult diseases and wounds with the help of magical medicinal plants, and it was he who made the patron god of doctors Aesculapius envy himself. The insidious Aesculapius poisoned Pean, but the god of the kingdom of the dead, Hades, cured by him in his time, turned him into a beautiful flower.

Garden peonies have a thick root, the development of which takes place in a rather non-standard way. Fresh roots-appendages appear every year, and the previous root processes become larger and stronger, transforming into tubers. The root system of peonies extends almost a meter deep, and up to half a meter wide. In the winter period, the stem part of the plant dies off, in the spring it grows again.

Distinctive characteristics of the plant:

  • the bush reaches a height of half a meter to a meter, depending on the variety;
  • has the shape of a spreading, lush, but straight bush;
  • branchy shoots, they have rather large complex foliage;
  • the leaf is dense, dark green, of a spectacular shape, decorating the flowering with volume, texture, expressive graphics;
  • in autumn, the foliage turns dark crimson and decorates the landscape until frost;
  • the most striking distinguishing feature is the large, spectacular apical-type bloom;
  • flowering begins after planting for 3 or 4 years;
  • flowers of a single species or collected in inflorescences of 3 flowers at the top of the plant;
  • petals are round or oval, their edge is slightly wavy, they are collected in a corolla, holding on to a cup of sepals, the number of which reaches 10;
  • the flower has many stamens with anthers;
  • flowering is characterized by splendor, luxury and high decorativeness, the texture of the flower is satin, delicate;
  • the shape, size, degree of terry flowering differ depending on the variety;
  • flower diameter varies from 10 to 20 cm;
  • flowers are characterized by a pronounced intoxicating aroma with tart and sweet notes.

The flowering period starts in May and lasts until early July, depending on the variety.

If we take the average indicators, then the flowering of peonies, as a rule, does not exceed a three-week interval, which can be increased due to proper care, comfortable temperature and humidity. After the flowers fall, multileaf fruits are formed.

Use cases

Laura dessert variety looks good on a green lawn in splendid isolation and in the company of others like them. Landscape designers also grow it in beddings, mixborders, on round classic and tiered flower beds, in borders on both sides of garden paths. The plant is suitable for decorating a low hedge, pionaria. Small size allows you to plant crops in containers and flowerpots. The French variety is ideal for mixed plantings. Laura dessert goes well with daylilies, honeysuckle, irises, cloves, heuchera, petunias, astilbe, pelargonium, hellebore, sage. A good option is to place a cream flower next to coniferous and evergreen crops: thujas, dwarf pines, junipers, box trees. If you want to add vertical lines to the flower garden, plant a delphinium or foxglove next to the peonies of the described variety. In a small area, it is not forbidden to combine a varietal plant with daisies, cuffs, primrose or badan. The lush inflorescences of our heroine will decorate any bouquet, especially since they do not lose their freshness for a long time when cut.

Description of peony Old Faithful

This variety is referred to as interspecific hybrids and terry herbaceous plants. The flowers have large buds that look like a rose, with a diameter of about 20 cm.Each consists of wide, velvety petals of a purple or reddish hue, which change color over time and become lighter. Inside the flowers there are large stamens, exuding a delicate aroma during the flowering period.

Peony buds fully open when grown in sunny areas

Adult bushes of Old Faithful peonies grow up to 90-100 cm in length, they are quite spreading, so they need a lot of space, which is important to consider in advance before planting. During the first two years, they grow slowly as they gradually build up the root system.

After two to three years, the number of shoots increases, and the bushes begin to grow. They give strong stalks, each of which forms at least three flowers.

Growing features

Shirley Temple's requirements are the same as most peonies.

  • Loves well-lit, open areas. It is here that he will reveal all his splendor. However, in hot weather, you will need light shelter from too bright sunlight.
  • Also, do not forget that there should be no shrubs and tall trees nearby, and it is better to keep a distance of three meters to the nearest buildings, no less. Peonies are placed on a plot two meters from one another. This arrangement promotes good ventilation and prevents the appearance of diseases.
  • A planting pit is prepared solid, deep, with the expectation of strongly growing roots.
  • Even if the soil is rather loose, it is better to lay drainage on the bottom: gravel, crushed stone, sand or at least broken brick.
  • In order to provide a young plant with nutrition for the first time, about three buckets of humus, a half-liter can of wood ash and half a glass of mineral fertilizers, which include potassium and phosphorus (for example, superphosphate, potassium sulfate), are poured. Everything is thoroughly mixed with earth.
  • This crop prefers light, slightly acidic soil. Therefore, if necessary, lime is added to the soil.

In addition to the herbaceous variety, there is also the Shirley Temple tree variety. There are some differences in the way they are planted. Treelike ones are planted deeper so that the roots of the plant develop fully, but herbaceous ones, on the contrary, do not like great depth.

After the pit is fully prepared, they begin planting. The seedling is placed in the middle and covered with earth so that the upper buds are at a depth of 3-4 centimeters for the herbaceous variety, and up to 8 cm for the tree species.

Further care in the first two to three years is as follows.

  • Frequent but moderate watering.For a plant, both lack of moisture and its excess are equally destructive.
  • Constant loosening of the soil, is held the day after rain or watering.
  • Timely weed removal.
  • In autumn, after the onset of the first cold weather, the aboveground part is cut almost to ground level.
  • Despite the fact that the variety belongs to frost-resistant, it is better to cover young bushes for the winter, sprinkling a layer of humus or compost on top.
  • In the spring, as soon as the threat of frost passes, the insulation is removed.

Mulch

For 3-4 years, the peony blooms for the first time. From that time on, they begin to feed him. For convenience, the procedure can be combined with watering. In total, three dressings are carried out per season.

  • In early spring, organic fertilizers are applied. This helps the plant to grow faster and get stronger after winter.
  • The second time is fertilized before flowering, when the buds begin to swell. Here mineral fertilizers with phosphorus content will be required.
  • The third feeding is carried out closer to autumn, when the faded peonies are preparing for wintering. The fertilizer must contain potassium. In no case should nitrogen be introduced, since the shoots will grow, and the roots will not have time to accumulate a sufficient amount of nutrients.
  • After frost, the stems of the plants are cut at a height of 7-8 centimeters from the surface. Adult bushes of peonies calmly endure the winter cold.

Planting and leaving

Peony Old Faithful Old Faithful is planted on soil with any composition, the ideal option would be saturated loam, fed with humus fertilizer. The weighted soil is made looser with the help of compost fertilizer, sand, peat or humus. The distance between each bush can be at least 1-1.5 m so that they do not overlap during growth. It is recommended to plant plants in the autumn, this time is considered the most favorable. The planting process does not cause problems; even novice gardeners can handle this procedure. To plant peonies, you must:

  1. Make a deep hole, the width, length and depth of which should not exceed 80 cm.
  2. Drainage is placed on the bottom of the pit, after which it is filled with soil in a mixture with potash fertilizers, wood ash and superphosphate until the middle.
  3. In the central part, a hill is made, a seedling is fixed in it at an angle, the roots are straightened and sprinkled with earth.
  4. After planting, the ground around the seedling must be well leveled so as not to injure the eyes of the plant, then water it abundantly.

According to this algorithm, each flower is planted, strictly observing the distance between the seedlings. If you carry out the planting according to all the rules, over the next two years, the plants will only need to be watered, loosened, and also mulched the soil around them, and feed them in a timely manner.

Peonies are traditionally planted in October so that the seedlings take root better.

How to plant?

Peony "Gold Mine" requires a relatively dry and, moreover, rich in nutrients soil. Dense soil is contraindicated for him. Full lighting and warmth are very important

Attention: the buds when planting should be at least 0.03 and not higher than 0.05 m above the ground level. More precisely, it is possible to plant and even grow a peony, otherwise it will not bloom

The cultivar is considered a durable crop. It may not require a transplant for several decades. If it is still produced, you can wait for the manifestation of the main varietal properties in 2 or 3 years. Both for planting and for transplanting, you can choose both sunny and partially shady places. The procedure is performed in the spring or autumn months.

When about 30 days remain before planting, it is necessary to prepare pits with a size of 0.6x0.6x0.6 m.With proper planting, you can wait for flowering in June and the first half of July. Since the stems are quite strong, light wind will not hurt them. But it is still better to protect the culture from drafts. In addition to the landing rules, you need to know other subtleties.

Description of the peony Karl Rosenfeld

The bush of the Karl Rosenfeld variety is powerful, reaches a height of 1 m, spreading. The leaves are carved and have a light olive tint.

The leaf plate on the surface is smooth, with a noticeable shine. In autumn, the bush turns red, which allows the Karl Rosenfeld peony to retain its decorative effect throughout the season.

Basically, the plant has gained such popularity due to its lush and bright flowers. The peony will show all its beauty when disembarking in open sunny places. Shoots and peduncles are strong enough, dense and able to withstand the weight of large buds.

Inflorescences up to 20 cm in diameter, terry, bright shade. Most often, you can find Karl Rosenfeld in ruby or purple tones, but there are options with deep red, pale pink and white colors.

It is not necessary to tie a bush, but many growers use decorative supports, because the peony is quite sprawling.

The surface of the leaf is smooth, with a visible sheen. At the end of summer, the crown acquires a reddish color and remains so until late autumn.

The benefits of peony Karl Rosenfeld are as follows:

  • cold resistance;
  • tolerates drought well;
  • resistance to most diseases and pests;
  • large bright double flowers;
  • pleasant aroma;
  • unpretentious care.

The disadvantages include the high cost of these peonies, as well as the loss of varietal traits when propagated by seeds.
