Planting and leaving
Planting the Gloria Day rose bush in the ground is carried out in early May, when the soil has completely thawed.
- Immediately before planting, the roots of the plant are immersed in water so that they can be saturated with moisture.
- The landing site is chosen as protected from the wind as possible and well illuminated by the sun.
- The soil should be well drained and have a slightly acidic environment.
- Planting holes are made 40 cm deep, the distance between the planted rose bushes is also 40 cm.
Despite her stamina, Gloria Day is still a capricious plant. It is necessary to follow some rules that will help keep it fresh and blooming for a long time:
- watering should be done with warm water in the evening;
- it is imperative to fertilize the soil with organic fertilizers;
- feeding the plant with mineral fertilizers.
The first feeding can be carried out using urea, in subsequent times it is better to choose potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. Gloria Day rose bushes can be fertilized with slurry prepared in a special way:
- Cow dung is mixed with water in a ratio of 1: 3.
- After 2 weeks, superphosphate and potassium sulfate are added to the mixture.
- Then they insist for another 10 days and dilute with water before use in a ratio of 1:10.
When carrying out top dressing, you first need to water the ground, and then with the prepared fertilizer. Each rose bush requires at least 5 liters of top dressing. Sprinkle the dried earth with fresh, and loosen it every other day.
Pruning
The Gloria Day variety needs mandatory pruning. It is necessary for the formation of the crown of the bush and the prolongation of abundant flowering.
Cut with pruning shears at a distance of 0.5 cm. In young bushes that grow the first year, the first 7-8 buds must be cut off. This is necessary in order for the bush to strengthen.
Particular attention should be paid to the pruning tool - it must be sharp and free from rust
How to tie correctly?
- In order for the flowering to be abundant, the main shoots are fixed in a horizontal position. The side shoots in this case will grow straight up, forming a lush flowering wall.
- If the gloria Day rose is planted along the wall, then the shoots are fixed with a fan. This stimulates the growth of new side shoots.
- When growing a rose near a single support, its fixation occurs in a spiral. The shoots of the rose bush must be securely attached to the support so that they cannot be blown by the wind. Plastic twine is a good material for the garter.
Transfer
A rose bush is transplanted if the place in which it grows does not meet the necessary conditions. An adult plant is transplanted in early fall or early spring. In these cases, the seedlings take root well.
- Shoots are cut by a third or half before transplanting.
- Next, the bush is carefully dug out, preserving the roots of the plant as much as possible. Damaged roots must be removed with pruning shears.
- After that, the bush is transplanted to a new, carefully prepared (as before planting) place.
- A few days after transplanting, add earth to the base of the bush, as it subsides.
Preparing for winter
- Preparation of a rose bush for wintering begins at the end of summer, stopping watering and loosening the soil.
- Potash fertilizers can be used as top dressing to help strengthen plant tissues.
- The bushes should be covered when a constant temperature is established not higher than -5 ° C.
- The bushes are removed from the supports, rotten or damaged sprouts are removed, and completely cleaned of leaves.
- They carefully twist the bush, tie the branches with twine and attach them to the ground with wooden or iron hooks. Spruce branches or dry leaves should be placed under the bush.
- From above, the rose bush is covered with any material suitable for this (spruce branches, film, wooden boxes). There should be air space between the plant and the shelter.
Rose care "New Dawn"
The New Dawn rose bush grows well, forming a lush blooming crown. My seven-year-old bush has a diameter of 55 cm at the base.
Like other climbing roses, in the middle lane, the New Dawn bush should be covered in autumn. Once I poorly covered her, and in winter there were frosts down to -25 degrees. As a result, the lashes froze the roses, and then I had to cut them all out. I was very sad about this. But soon new powerful shoots appeared at my bush. And my recovered New Day rose is better than it was!
Climbing roses do not need to be pruned. But it is necessary to regularly cut out five-year-old coarse shoots in order to rejuvenate the bush. Sanitary pruning of a climbing rose can be done in autumn and spring: cut thin, weak, dried branches.
Perhaps the only enemy of the New Dawn rose is aphids. The bush should be inspected daily, especially young twigs, in order to notice the first aphids in time and destroy them. I use chemical preparations ("Iskra", "Inta-Vir") in the fight against aphids.
Regular care of the New Day rose is the same as for all other roses in the garden. In the summer, in the absence of rain, I water the rose bush abundantly 2-3 times a week. When watering roses, it is undesirable for the leaves to get water in order to avoid the appearance of spots. At the end of August, I reduce the watering of roses, and in a rainy autumn I stop altogether.
From the middle of September, you do not need to cut the buds from the rose bush. This provokes the appearance of new shoots, which will not have time to ripen before the cold weather and will inevitably die in winter.
It must be remembered that the fading rose flowers must be regularly cut with pruning shears before the first complex leaf (five-leafed). Avoid the formation of unnecessary seeds, as they take away a lot of nutrients from the rose bush.
History of origin
Rose Gloria Day was bred by crossing Georg Dixon and Claudia Pernet with Joanna Hill and Charles Kilham. The varieties Margaret McGrady and Francis Mailland were also used in the breeding work.
For the first time the variety was obtained in the 30s. 20th century in France. The author was Francis Mailland. The bred rose did not receive the name "Gloria Day" immediately, its first name was Madame A. Mailland in honor of the untimely deceased mother of the author of the variety.
This flower became a symbol of the first meeting of the UN members. He became a sign of agreement and reconciliation. All the participants in this meeting received one beautiful flower. That is why, the rose is often called Peace, which means "peace" in translation from English. Rose was awarded the honorary title of "Rose of the Century".
Gloria Day is widespread in many gardens and is a favorite rose of many gardeners.
Gloria Day is distinguished from other types of climbing roses by its unusual delicate color. This type of rose is famous all over the world and is the standard of hybrid tea roses. Also, only this species has as many as 4 names:
- Gloria Day;
- Madame A. Mailland;
- Peace;
- Joy (in Italy).
The rosebush blooms from mid-June to early fall. Duration of flowering of one flower is a month. The main reasons for the lack of flowering include:
- Weak variety or low-quality seedling (less than 3 years old).
- Failure to comply with growing conditions (poor lighting, improperly prepared soil and / or selected planting site).
- Poor winter insulation.
In order to start or resume flowering, it is necessary to eliminate and / or correct all unfavorable factors and properly care for the plant. The rose will definitely continue to bloom, but in neglected situations, flowering may begin only next year.
Shelter roses for the winter
When to cover roses for the winter
By freeing the leaves from the roses, you signal them to rest. Let the cuts and cuts dry well and start covering the bushes for the winter. However, you should not rush too much, because in a warm, lingering autumn, roses will continue growing without leaves, and if they are covered at this time, the buds of the plants can dry out and die.
At what temperature to cover roses for the winter? It is necessary to keep the roses for two weeks at a temperature of -2 to -5 ºC, so that their vital activity is completely extinguished, and only after that build a shelter. Note that roses grafted onto rose hips can tolerate temperatures of -10-12 ºC, while native roses die at -3 ºC.
When and how to cover roses in the middle lane and in the Moscow region
The optimal time for the construction of a shelter in the central regions of Russia is the first or second decade of November. A dry, clear day is chosen for this, when the temperature settles within the range of -5-7 ºC.
How to cover roses for the winter in the suburbs? Hybrid tea, polyanthus roses and floribunda are bent to the ground, having previously spread spruce branches under them, and fixed with wooden or metal hairpins. The base of the bush is spud with dry earth, peat, compost or humus to a height of 35-40 cm, and then the lying roses are covered with dry foliage or spruce branches. You can install metal arcs over the lying bush and pull the covering material over them.
The shoots of hybrid tea, standard roses and floribunda roses are more fragile and less flexible than the stems of climbing roses, so it is difficult to bend them to the ground. Leave these roses in an upright position, erecting metal arched supports of the required height above them, on which you can stretch the film, but do not forget to spud the base of the bush high before sheltering.
Not all roses need shelter. Most of the park varieties and hybrids are so winter hardy that they do not require protection from the cold at all, and the bushes of those park varieties that are worth worrying about should be piled high enough and wrapped in paper for the winter.
Shelter roses for the winter in the Urals
Shelter of roses in autumn in the Urals can be done at the end of October, when the air temperature reaches -5 ºC. It is good if dry snow falls by this time - its natural protection slows down the cooling of the soil. But you can't count on nature, so it's better to cover the roses after all. In mid-October, trim the bushes to the height of the shelter, remove unripe shoots and leaves from them, and remove debris and plant debris from the trunk circle.
Sometimes rodents settle under the shelter, damaging the bark in the lower part of the shoots, so it is advisable to spread poisoned baits under the bushes: the sawdust is impregnated with a solution of creolin at the rate of 1 tablespoon of the drug per bucket of water and laid out under the bushes. The bush is covered with peat or dry earth at a third of the height, and the upper part is tied with spruce branches.
For single short-cut bushes, wooden boxes are used as a shelter, which are covered with a film on top, pressing its edges with boards, bricks or sprinkling with earth so that a gust of wind does not tear off the polyethylene. However, do not press down on the film completely, leave small holes in several places for air exchange.
If a harsh winter is expected, make a hut above the bush of boards or plywood sheets, and cover it with foil on top. The height of the air-dry shelter should be such that its "ceiling" is 10 cm above the bush. In such a house, roses do not freeze and do not die.
If you grow a lot of roses on the site, make a plank frame over the bushes to the width of the flower bed and stretch a film over it, also pressing it along the edges to the ground.
How to cover roses for the winter in Siberia
Roses covered for the winter will not die from frost, but they can vanish. To prevent this from happening, you should not cover your roses too early, and in order to determine the required dates, you have to carefully monitor the weather forecast - after all, sometimes it is warm in Siberia even at the beginning of November.
Young, newly planted roses can be covered with five-liter plastic bottles with a cut-out bottom and covered with dry leaves on top. In order to avoid damping the rose, you need to remove the lid from the bottle.
Adult, short-cut bushes need to be covered with earth high and also covered with dry leaves.
The fact is that in Siberia the winters are snowy, so the roses should not be allowed to freeze only until the snow falls, and then they will winter safely under it.
Breeding features
Experts do not recommend planting a rose in the same place where it has already grown.
The soil here is already depleted, and there is also a considerable likelihood of different ones.
If the personal plot is small and you have to plant a rose in the same place, then you should first remove the top layer of soil (about 50–65 cm) and replace it with a new one.
Such a rose is propagated by cuttings. In August, you can cut cuttings from the growth of the current year. But you should choose not very young shoots, but those that are already a little ripe.
The stem will be a shoot, which has about three leaves. The lower leaves should be removed and only one, the upper leaf should be left.
Before planting, you need to moisten and insert the finished cuttings into the softened soil at a distance of about 20 cm from each other. The depth of placement of the cutting should be such that only the left leaf protrudes above the ground.
For cuttings should be done. Individual greenhouses made of cut plastic bottles will do. But you should not close the lid of such bottles so that the air can circulate freely. You can also make a general shelter.
Planted and covered cuttings can be left until winter by watering them with a little water from time to time. In spring, young cuttings will already give new leaves and will start up young shoots.
They can either be planted right away if the bushes are strong enough, or you can leave the seedlings for another 1 year so that they get stronger.
Varieties with "New" in the name
In the huge assortment of roses, there are many varieties, the name of which begins with "New" among climbing roses, the most popular are:
- «New dawn
», (Everblooming Dr. W. Van Fleet, The New Dawn, Somerset Rose Nursery USA, 1930), Hybrid - «New dawn red
”, (Étendard, New Dawn Rouge, Red New Dawn), Marcel Robichon France, 1956, Large-Flowered Climber. - «New
V
laze
»(Blaze Superior, Demokracie, Blaze Improved, Improved Blaze), Bohm, Czech Republic, 1935, Large-Flowered Climber
These hybrids have successfully passed the test of time and continue to compete with modern varieties. For example, "New Dawn" was so widespread that it was hailed as the "rose of the world." According to statistics, created in 1930, New Dawn was sold and planted more often than other varieties. Moreover, not only in their homeland - the United States, but in all countries where roses grow.
A little later, in Europe, in 1935, a famous Czech breeder created a climbing rose "New Blaze", which in America is known as "Blaze Superior". Both varieties have one source of origin - the Wichurana hybrid. And although they have different decorative qualities, they have one thing in common - this is abundant, long flowering.
Another representative of "New Dawn Red" was born in 1956. Over time, they began to use a different name for the variety "Étendard" so that there was no confusion with the "New Dawn" rose.
Care features
Soil maintenance consists of the usual loosening of the soil and the removal of weeds. It is worth remembering that the roots of the climbing rose "New Dawn" go several meters deep.
Watering
You need to moisten the soil as it dries out, based on weather conditions. Watering is carried out in the evening with water warmed up by the sun's rays. In the summer, during the dry period, the bushes need to be watered 2-3 times a week.
Important! Be careful not to get water on the leaves, otherwise mottling may occur.
From the end of August, the frequency of watering should be reduced; with the onset of the rainy period, the need for watering disappears altogether.
Top dressing
In the spring, when the shoots start to grow, you can spray the rose with "Zircon" or "Epin-Extra". Carry out the processing in the evening, because in the light the minerals decompose.
Fertilizing a rose with nitrogen-containing fertilizers can be carried out using a solution of urea with water (1 tbsp.spoon of urea in 1 bucket). Watering the plant with a solution of herbal infusion or mullein is also allowed.
Advice! After the rose begins to bloom actively, do not apply nitrogen-containing fertilizers.
In June, during the budding period, introduce a complex of fertilizers with microelements. For example, you can add 1 tbsp to a ten-liter mullein solution. spoon of nitroammophoska.
Every decade carry out foliar dressing with "Potassium humate"; sprinkle wood ash under the bush from time to time.
Important! Feed the plant after rain or heavy watering.
Pruning
From the very beginning of growth, the New Dawn rose bush must be properly formed. Straighten shoots and branches and direct them in the right direction. This variety pleases with the fact that any plant shoot produces flowers in the very first year of growth.
To maintain a curly shape, leave the shoots to their full length before winter, and do the pruning very carefully. If you cut it low, it will form a hybrid tea bush. And if you trim at a level of 1.3–1.5 m, then the result will be an excellent climbing rose shape, which will delight with flowering until late autumn. It is suitable for any vertical surface.
Wintering plants
The very first thing to do is to remove the plant from the support and remove all the foliage from it. Then you should cut out the weakened or diseased shoots.
Important! If there are less than 10 shoots on the plant, then they should not be cut off.
Place a plank pallet on the ground and place plants on top of it. It is advisable to spray the rose with a product containing copper. After that, dig in the rose bushes by 30 cm, using ripe manure, compost or ordinary soil (but not peat!).
Collect the fallen leaves and flowers and remove from the site. If the climate is harsh in winter, then wrap the shoots in burlap or spruce branches. Plain paper (cardboard, wallpaper, paper bags) is also suitable for this purpose.
Cover the top of the plant with a covering dense material in several layers or with a film that will protect the bushes from autumn dampness. With the latter option, leave small "windows" through which fresh air can circulate freely. True, these "windows" will need to be closed later, when the ground is frozen. During severe frosts, it is recommended to cover the rose bushes with 15–20 cm snow.
Description: Roses New Dawn
I did not immediately decide to plant my first rose in the country. In my mind, caring for roses was quite difficult. Cover in time, open in time, feed, cut, etc. etc.
But somehow my husband and I went to the Moscow state farm for seedlings and I could not resist. A huge pavilion with roses of different varieties and everything is so beautiful and inexpensive. In general, I could not resist, and we purchased several varieties of roses. All roses sold at the Moskovsky state farm are adapted to our climate (our dacha is located in the Moscow region) and winter quite well with proper care. One of my first and favorite varieties was the New Down climbing rose. My love for roses started in 2008.
Description.
This variety has flowers of a pale pink color of 8 cm. The rose is very hardy, grows well, blooms profusely for almost 2 months, frost-resistant. She has been living with us since 2008.
Flowering begins in June. The bush is covered with many very beautiful buds True, each bud blooms for 3-4 days and falls, but instead a new one blooms. Due to this, the rose seems to be blooming continuously. To make the rose look neat, the faded buds must be cut off; if they are not removed, the rose petals fly around, and the ground under the bush is covered with a beautiful carpet.
We planted New Down near the trellis, so shoots can be tied and guided over the trellis.
Diseases and care.
This variety is quite disease resistant. But do not forget that aphids are very fond of roses, therefore they are necessary spray
liquid soap or infusion of garlic, or an insecticide (fufanon, actelik). And to combat black spot, I spray roses with a solution of copper sulfate. Feeding
I rose in the spring, after opening and in the summer a couple of times with a special fertilizer for roses. It is sold in garden centers. It is necessary to finish feeding in the middle of summer so that the rose has time to prepare for winter. Pruning
I spend roses 2 times a year. In the spring, when I remove dead shoots and in the fall, in front of the shelter, I remove young, thin shoots.
Shelter of the rose.
I begin to prepare the rose for shelter in the fall. I remove or cut off all the buds, leaves, remove and cut the lashes. I put the lashes on a glassine substrate and pin them with metal pins that my husband made for me. I also use arcs that can be bought at garden stores. Then I sprinkle it with earth, protecting the roots, after that I cover it with spruce branches or covering material. I want to admit that hiding roses for the winter is the most time-consuming process, but I stretch it out over several weekends, gradually preparing the rose for winter.
New Down winters very well, shoots freeze a little. This rose is very unpretentious and responds well to taking care of it with abundant flowering. This rosette has been pleasing us for many years, but it is gradually aging, so for the last two years it has not bloomed so abundantly. Probably will have to update soon.
The undemanding and undemanding climbing rose "New Dawn" is incredibly popular in different countries of the world. Next, we will present a description of the New Down rose and talk about the conditions of its maintenance on the site.
New Dawn ("new day") - an old variety of large-flowered climbing rose, a hybrid of Wichurana, bred in 1930 in an American nursery. Today it is the most widespread variety in the world, favored by many gardeners. For its wide popularity, New Dawn was even proclaimed the "rose of the world".
Other variety names:
- Everblooming Dr. W. Van Fleet;
- The New Dawn;
- New Dawn.
The rose bush is branchy, spreading; the average height is 200-250 cm, but in a favorable climate the rose can grow up to 6 m. The climbing shoots are strong, vigorous, with thorny thorns (see photo). Glossy leaves of medium size, green color.
Double flowers, large (7 - 8 cm), contain up to 40 petals. The shape of roses changes during flowering from conical to cupped. The unopened rosebud has a deep pink color. The opened flowers are pale pink. On sunny days, the flowers become whitish, and in inclement weather - pink.
The aroma of New Dawn rose, fragrant, spicy, delicate, with a slight apple hint, lasts throughout the entire flowering season: from early summer to late autumn.
Planting and leaving
New Dawn is a rose that requires a well-sunlit and protected area from the winds for planting. The soil should preferably be light. If the rose is supposed to be planted near the wall, it is necessary to maintain a distance of 50 cm from it. This will prevent the roots from drying out. This variety is not cut for the winter, respectively, you need to think about where the whips will fit.
Note! You cannot plant a rose in the place where it has already grown. In extreme cases, remove the top layer of soil 50 cm and replace it with a new one.
If a New Down rose is planted at a support, then a hole is dug, stepping back 20 cm.The roots are straightened in the opposite direction, and the bush itself is tilted to the support.
The plant is planted both in spring and autumn. The preferred dates are from April 20 to May 20 and from September 1 to October 10. Planting in spring will allow you to monitor the condition of the plant throughout the season, and planting in autumn will ensure the rapid development of cuttings next year. The flower has time to take root before frost.
The plant is fed with mineral fertilizers and organic
The soil next to the rose must be periodically loosened, and weeds must be removed in a timely manner. Watering is carried out as the earth dries up, with warm water, preferably in the evening. It is better that the water does not fall on the leaves. From the end of August, they gradually stop watering the rose.
The plant is fed with mineral and organic fertilizers. In the spring, growing shoots can be stimulated with a solution of Zircon or Epin-Extra. Processing is carried out in the evening, as the preparations decompose in the sun.
With the onset of active flowering, nitrogen-containing products are not added. When budding, they are fed with a complex fertilizer with microelements. Periodically, a little ash is poured on the flower.
Rose New Down is unpretentious in care. The main difficulty is to form a bush that grows rapidly. This should be done when the plant is still small. When a garter is used, twine is used so as not to injure the stems. The following schemes are usually used:
- when planting against a wall, the bush is straightened in the form of a fan - this ensures air access and the possibility of active development of lateral shoots;
- when relying on a pillar, the branches are twisted in a spiral;
- at the trellis, the roses are placed horizontally, the side shoots rise up, and the flowers are evenly distributed over the plant.
For the winter, the rose is covered in regions where the temperature drops below -18 ° C. This is not necessary in warmer areas. To begin with, the rose is removed from the support and all the leaves are removed. Check the integrity of the shoots for flowering in the following periods.
Note! In 2018, New Down rose seedlings appeared in stores, which bloom only once a season, that is, they do not have repair properties. If there are more than 10 shoots on the bush, then all that are older than 3 years old are cut
Weak, dried and diseased branches are also removed. Further, all the lashes are tied and gently bent to the ground, fixing with pegs. Then the plant is covered with soil or sand. It is better not to take the earth directly from under the flower, because there is a risk of exposing the roots. At the end, the flower is covered with a film

Question number 1.
What roses does New Down go with?
When this rose grows, it is smart on its own. In the rose garden, it will effectively complement varieties of any color, but you should not arrange too variegated mixture. It is better if there are 1 - 2 bushes with a bright color nearby, for example, the "Sympathy" variety. It is desirable that the red color is less, otherwise the "New Down" will be "lost".
Question number 2.
What can serve as an alternative substitute for this variety?
Rose varieties with a pink degree of pink color, most similar to "New Down".
English
Miss
(Cants of Colchester, UK, 1977) This variety belongs to the floribunda group, blooms all summer, and is resistant to disease and rain. Grows up to 1m in height.
-
Gertrude Jekyll
(English Rose, Austin, UK, 1985) The size of the bush is over 1.2 m, the color of the flowers is more intense than "New Down". Average resistance to adverse conditions. Does not tolerate waterlogging. -
Shropshire
Lass
(Austin UK, 1968) The bush reaches two meters in height. The flowers are pale pink, simple, small in size, but the whole bush is strewn with them. Blooms once, but profusely. -
Swan lake
(McGredy Ireland, 1968) The cultivar belongs to climbers, it is used as a climbing rose. The flowers are large - 8 - 10 cm, pale pink. The height of the shoots is 2.5 - 3 m. It is thermophilic, moderately resistant to powdery mildew and does not cope well with black spot. In zones 4 and 5, it requires shelter for the winter.
Each rose bush is beautiful in its own way
Novice growers should pay attention to the New Dawn variety.
, often called "New Day"
Those who once saw her in the garden immediately fell in love with her and asked for a cutting. By the way, the survival rate of cuttings is one hundred percent. By the fall, this stalk will turn into a sturdy bush with three stems. It is also surprisingly easy to survive the winter under cover in the open field. In the second season, this is a full-fledged actively flowering bush, up to 70 cm tall.
